the cost of arrogance

"Both of you, stay there. Don't come over here."

Following his orders, both of them stood there, awaiting the man's next order. Stark turned his head to look at the bright orange light shining through the window.

Stark was feeling uneasy around the mansion for reason he didn't know. He didn't have the feeling of dread in a long time.

That was the main reason, he agreed to the man's order. If the feeling wasn't here then he would have already recommend a few bodyguards he knew.

Sometimes, these bodyguards were a tier higher than him.

The tier after Uncoiled was called Overlapped. The reason on why it was called that? He didn't know. He only knew the name, after all.

He looked over to Julo to check if he had also felt the feeling. However, it seemed like he was the only one with it.

Which wasn't that bad since it meant Julo's Versile wasn't quite ready for the intuition. Which means, he wouldn't need to go on most of the missions.

He was already growing fond of him, it was be rather unfortunate if he died. Stark was already a little numb to death, however, it still made him feel bad when there was a life lost when he could save them.

After following him for a few hours, he turned around to tell them to leave.

However, Stark didn't hear anything as he already turned to the window and was already in a battle stance before the window broke.

  ***

Julo wasn't really a battle freak. The reason he was smiling in the first place was because he knew he would get a raise after completing the mission. That was the main reason he decided to not question Gino.

He stared at the two intruder in front of him and got ready to battle. He turned to his left to see Stark doing the exact same thing, other than the fact that his body and skill was way better than his.

Julo felt weak after looking at Stark but he knew that he just had to fight more to get as much experience as him.

Well, he thought about it again and gave up on it when realizing that he had to do a lot of work.

'Maybe, I'll just get it by trial and errors.'

He grabbed the gun in his pocket in and pulled it out with the fingers on the handle.

The intruders wore black masks and clothes with the same colors. One of them were smaller than the other.

They both reached into their pocket and tried to take out something. However, they weren't quick as Stark shot their hands, knocking the gun out of their hand.

Blood poured out of their hands as one of them applied pressure on their hand.

Unfortunately for them, Stark didn't allow them any breaks. He quickly went up them, which anyone would think was reckless. However, since the guns were already outside of their grasps, there weren't any risk.

He didn't know if the person in front of them were Uncoiled or not and he didn't want to take any risks.

He quickly knocked out one of them and quickly followed up by knocking another out.

Julo was watching all of this happened. While he only caught a few glimpses despite being an Uncoiled. He could tell that he would stand no chance against him in battle.

'I did nothing.' Julo felt a little sad. He didn't get to do anything and because of that he won't be that much of a raise. However, he knew it was good since he wasn't sure if he could handle both of them properly.

In fact, he would most likely die trying to get up close. He thought about it and decided that he need some teaching.

He turned back to check the safety of the man behind and confirmed that he was safe. However, he sighed at the sight of the man crying from fear. He couldn't blame him that much. He would most likely be pissing his pants if he saw someone break into his house. Albeit, it would be him 5 years ago.

"You ok?" He turned back to look at Stark talking to the client. He didn't even hear him get up close.

  "I'm fine."

  "That's good to hear."

Stark looked around the room, seemingly feeling uneasy.

"I need to take both of them to the police. You stay right there."

"No. You can leave." He said with a smile while looking at the intruders.

He stood up and went up to them.

  However, Stark quickly stopped him.

"Sir, stay back here. This is for your safety."

"I know them. They are the one I rejected, this evening."

  "Reject what?"

  "Don't ask. I'm paying you."

Stark sighed and asked him again if he wanted them to go.

He got the same answer and he sighed once again. Despite this, he still didn't want to go due to the feeling. His mind was telling him that something doesn't make sense and he couldn't tell what it was.

"Are you planning to stay there?" He said while walking back to the exit with both of the intruders on handcuffs.

Julo's fatigued sigh was covered by the rain.

  "Gosh, I hate this rain."

  ***

"He ignored our request for a machine with a proper safety feature and that..."

  He paused for a bit.

  "That killed my sister."

His tone was full of sorrow and regret as he managed to get those words out of his mouth.

"I see." The one interviewing him in the police station spoke after being quiet for him to speak.

"Sir, Imma need you to tell us everything if you want justice done."

  The culprit nodded.

  "Let's start with one thing."

  He immediately followed up.

"When did your sister work at the factory."

"Around 6 months ago." He replied immediately as if he knew this question would pop up.

"And when did she died due to him?"

The interviewer felt he was rushing with his question and quickly changed the question.

"Let me change the question if you aren't comfortab-"

"No, it's fine." He cut him off.

  "She died 3 days ago."

'3 days ago, huh.' The interviewer actually knew the department that sent Julo and Stark to protect him and was asking him to get information on the department.

The reason? He was in a different department. By different department, he was in a completely different organization.

The organization he was in, was a lot stronger than government's since it was widespread all around the world.

However, he wasn't a high ranking nor was he a middle ranking. He just joined 3 months ago due to some personal situation.

Despite this, the organizations still worked together for difficult cases.

However, this case was different. The organization suddenly had a request from the government's identify the culprits.

Currently, he was trying to figure out why they made such a request.

"Who is your partner." They had the other person which was a woman in the interviewing room.

Someone was asking these similar yet different questions to figure out the government's intent.

"No idea. We just worked together because she had a similar incident to me."

  "Where did you meet her?"

He thought for a bit before replying.

"In a meeting for supernatural power."

His face tensed up and leaned forward.

"Where was the meeting held at?"

  "It was held...at....."

  "..."

  "I don't remember."

  "Alright."

He wrote something down in his notebook.

"Did you threaten him by any means?"

  "I didn't."

The interviewer's face tensed up even more as he stared at him in the eyes.

"He rejected the request for a new machine, right?"

  He replied back.

  "Yes."

His face tensed up even more than before. Now, looking like it was straight from a cartoon.

"When did you decided to kill him?"

He hesitated to answer after seeing the interviewer's face and struggled to get a few words out.

"This evening when he rejected compensation and said I should have been more careful."

He bursted from the chair as he stood up.

The culprit was frightened and raised his hand to cover his face. However, he suddenly ordered him to stay in the room and left.

The interviewer was only running at speeds he could show to the public. He was an Uncoiled. Unfortunately, he couldn't run at the speed of sound for a few seconds since running at that speed was hard to do even if you are an Overlapped.

An Uncoiled like him have no chance at running at that speed for more than 2 seconds.

He ignored everyone that tried asking him and kept on running to the ones that reported both of the culprits.

He could faintly hear both of them getting interviewed in the room in front of him.

Well, it was interview from the viewpoint of the public. When in reality, they had to get into a private space to talk about Uncoiled stuffs.

He bursted into the room and said out loud.

"We need to check the client."

Julo was confused, looking at him while Stark was looking tensed.

Stark immediately ran out of the room, not questioning him.

Julo was being carried by Stark and didn't even have time to process anything.

  ***

"The client is most likely in danger." Running at the client's house, Stark reminded him of the danger that was ahead.

The excruciatingly wind and rain, entered Julo's clothes as debris slowly collected inside his eyes. In the midst of the journey, a gun was slowly making its way outside Julo's pocket until it was fully dangling with a single thread as support.

Reaching their destination, Stark dropped him on the wet ground before bursting the door into pieces and ran off into the second floor. The chance of the client being in the second floor was the highest and Stark wasn't going to waste anytime searching other places.

While planning to follow Stark, a figure jumped out of the second window with outstanding agility as they ran into an empty road. He called Stark and ran straight to the figure.

He knew waiting for Stark would only let them get away.

Stretching his hand, he grabbed the rope before reaching for the gun as he brought it close to his eyes. He couldn't hesitate as a second of it would also let them get away.

With his arm hurting despite the healing properties of an Uncoiled, he couldn't take the risk of missing.

His surroundings became unnoticeable, the usual smell of rain hitting the earth was unperceived and the noise of it became transparent. His intense focus to imagine the flow of energy and balance in his arm made everything hidden.

Not even a second pass as he shot the bullet. Out of the muzzle, it behaved weirdly as it started moving erratically until the true nature of the bullet revealed just a few meters away from the target.

The bullet spread out, like a liquid as it landed on the target before solidifying into the shape of the liquid.

Julo smiled at the sight of the technique working as planned. As far as he knew, people could track Versation and due to that he made a few trick just a few days after he became an Uncoiled.

The trick was to liquify the bullet as it exits the muzzle and solidify it right after it hit the target. Using it like this, he could use the bullet as a tracker. Although, the speed of the bullet would be incredibly slow.

  "Nice."

A hand grabbed his shoulders as he heard Stark's voice behind him. He had already searched the mansion as he signaled him to return to the department.

Julo nodded and started running back while Stark ran to the culprit.

Julo could tell today was going to be a long day.
