Chapter 8: Finding Your Footing

  Chapter 8: Finding Your Footing

The morning air was crisp, laced with the faint scent of mountain dew and crushed petals as sunlight filtered through the healer’s hut in scattered beams. Auri sat still on his nest, his scarf folded beside him, while Juno moved with gentle precision, her hands glowing faintly with psychic energy as she completed her final checks.

"Hold still," she murmured, not unkindly. Juno’s eyes flickered with a faint blue sheen as she reached the end of her examination. Then, with a final press of her palm to his shoulder, the light faded, and she stepped back with a soft nod.

"Well," she said, smoothing down the front of her sash. "That’s it. No lingering damage. Your injuries are gone, and your type energy storage is completely repaired as well. You’ve made a full recovery."

Auri exhaled slowly, tail flicking behind him. "That’s… good to hear."

"You’re free to do as you please again," Juno confirmed. "Though do try to not instantly get hurt again, please."

  "I'll try," Auri muttered dryly.

Juno gave him a look. "Fortunately, you’ll be with me this morning. We’re expected at the guards headquarters. There are some matters that need to be discussed, now that you've fully recovered. The guards were already informed of our coming today."

"Matters," Auri repeated, eyes narrowing slightly. "That doesn’t sound ominous at all."

"You’ll see," Juno said simply, stepping toward the hut door. "Come along."

Auri slipped his scarf back over his head and followed her out into the bright morning light. The sun wasn’t high yet, still just cresting the rim of the crater above, but Newleaf Village was already stirring. Market stalls were being dusted off, a few young Pokemon chased each other between the houses, and the breeze carried the scent of fresh berrybread from the bakery.

As they passed beneath a low stone arch on the path toward the northern quarter, a by now familiar voice called out behind them. "Hey! Wait up!"

Auri turned just in time to see Yuki bounding down the slope, feathers bouncing and eyes shining. Her scarf fluttered behind her like a small banner, the silver trim catching the morning light.

"There you are!" she said, falling into step beside them. "You weren’t gonna leave without me, were you?"

Juno raised an eyebrow. "This is official business today."

"I know," Yuki said breezily. "Which is exactly why I'm coming along."

Juno didn’t stop walking. "This particular business does not involve you."

  Yuki frowned. "But-"

"Yuki," Juno said firmly. "You can accompany us to the guards headquarters. But beyond the threshold, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait."

Yuki huffed, clearly not thrilled. "You sure you don’t need backup?" she asked Auri.

"I think I'll be fine," he replied, which Yuki grudgingly accepted.

As they finally approached the guard headquarters, there was already a guard member in position. Vira, the Luxray, was already waiting just outside the entrance. Her sleek black fur shimmered faintly, and the crackle of electric tension always present around her seemed more subdued than usual, though no less intense.

"Auri. Juno," she said with a nod, then turned her gaze to Yuki. "Yuki. You’re not on the list and were definitely not invited to come along."

Yuki gave her best innocent look. "You have a list?" Vira didn’t answer.

Yuki sighed, shooting Auri a reluctant glance. "Guess this is where I wait, huh?"

"It won’t be long," Auri promised, in the hopes of that being the truth.

"You better not be," she muttered. "Or I’m sneaking in." Vira’s eyes narrowed slightly at that, but she said nothing.

Juno gestured for Auri to follow, and the three of them stepped into the guards headquarters together. Auri remained standing just inside the arched doorway, Juno beside him like a silent pillar of calm. Across the chamber, six other Pokemon were already gathered. The guards were here in full, all save for Vian, whose absence was expected.

Captain Kaen, the towering Arcanine who led them, stood at the center. His mane flickered faintly in the light, and his sharp golden eyes were turned toward Auri. Beside him stood Risa, arms crossed, her Hawlucha gaze level and unblinking. Zekel the Pangoro leaned back against the wall, massive arms folded, observing silently. Vira the Luxray flicked her tail once but said nothing. Myra, perched lightly on a beam above, gave Auri a distrsutful stare. Durro, calm and unmoving as ever, stood at the door they’d just entered through, like an anchor placed behind them.

Kaen broke the silence first. "So. Let us begin." He looked around the room before returning his gaze to Auri. "Our last meeting a few days ago decided that you would be allowed to stay within our village walls. But staying until you recovered," he said slowly, "is not the same as being allowed to actually live here. That is what we must decide next, now that you've recovered completely, except your memory. What life and what rules you are to take on. to properly integrate with us."

He stepped aside and gestured toward Risa. "You’ve worked with him more than everyone else here, except Juno. Your thoughts?"

Risa wasted no time. "He is quite intriguing. Probably not as harmless as we want to believe if our psychics are to be trusted, but Vian already saw no problem with him, didn't he? The biggest comotion he was involved in these last days was the Amber Looplet accident. And he was clearly a positive influence in that case." She shot a glance toward Auri, then to Kaen again. "He’s too impulsive if he perceives something as an injustice. But he acted with heart and that's what matters."

Juno stepped forward next. "He’s recovered remarkably well," she said softly. "He’s been cooperative. Honest, even if it was not the answer I wanted to hear sometimes. And I don't think he'll run into danger and cause us problems without a good reason." She glanced around at the others, voice calm but sure. "I believe he deserves more than just permission to stay. He deserves the chance to belong."

Vira gave a small huff through her nose. "I’m not disagreeing," she said, her voice low. "But I’ve seen enough weirdness in this crater to know it always comes back around." Her eyes found Auri’s. "He’s more than he looks. You said it yourself." She flicked her tail. "He should have someone in the guard he reports to. Not Juno. If something happens, he should come to us first."

Captain Kaen nodded thoughtfully at that but did not speak yet. Above them, Myra scoffed from her perch.

"I still think you’re all being too soft," she muttered. "He’s still a mystery. You don’t just wake up in the crater with no past and start helping with criminal investigations a few days later." Her eyes narrowed. "And no, I haven’t forgotten how much wasn’t told us about that incident. They came back hurt and all we got were excuses or no answers at all."

Auri shifted slightly at that, but Juno’s hand at his shoulder steadied him.

Risa raised a brow. "You’re not wrong. But I don’t think deception was the goal. More like... protection. A hasty judgment. He was trying to shield the other kids. And vice versa. Though I have no idea from what."

Zekel gave a grunt. "Then don’t isolate him. Train him. Let him connect with the other kids properly." The Pangoro’s voice was gravel and conviction. "If he’s truly dangerous, better he learns to control it properly. If not, then there's no harm done either. I already train the kids from time to time. Nothing speaks against one more."

Durro, remained quiet, not speaking for him, nor against him. Kaen gave a long exhale and turned back to Auri directly. "Do you want that chance?" he asked. "Not just to stay, but to live here. As one of us."

Auri nodded once. "I do." There was no flare of bravado in his voice. Just quiet conviction. That seemed to land even with Myra, who said nothing more.

Captain Kaen gave a firm nod. "Then we move forward." He looked to Vira. "Fetch the Elders. They’ll want to be part of this."

Vira turned, briskly padding out the side corridor that led... somewhere. The wait itself wasn't long. Soon, soft footsteps echoed from the back corridor, not rushed, but measured, with the weight of age and purpose. Moments later, Vira returned, and with her came the presence of the village’s most powerful voices.

  Stolen story; please report.

A Ninetales entered first, each step graceful, her fur seeming to shimmer with memory itself. Her many tails flicked gently in the dusty light. She said nothing as she took her place near the far wall, but her crimson eyes landed on Auri, cool, appraising, and calm.

Next came a Torterra, his shell just barely clearing the doorframe. Moss and blossoms clung to his back like a miniature meadow, and he carried the scent of old soil and quiet thunder. He rumbled a polite greeting toward the assembled guard but didn’t speak yet.

Elder Ilyra followed, her robes of dyed kelp and woven threads trailing faintly behind her. The mutated Slowking’s eyes were half-lidded in the same dreamy awareness as always, though a faint glimmer of interest sparked as she noted Auri’s presence again. Her coral crown clicked softly as she nodded to Juno.

The last to arrive was an imposing Dusknoir. His arrival darkened the mood in a way no words ever could. He didn’t glide so much as materialize. A massive being, cloaked in thick shadows that clung to him like an armor. Some of the guards straightened at his approach. Even Myra tensed, just slightly. But the Dusknoir only folded his arms behind his back, his single eye scanning the chamber slowly before resting, silent and unreadable, on Auri.

Kaen was the first to bow his head. "Honored Elders. Thank you for joining us."

The Ninetails gave a small nod in reply. "You called. We came. What do you need our input on?" Her voice was soft, but it filled the room like wind through ancient trees.

Kaen stepped forward again. "We have made our preliminary decision. The boy is no longer a threat, physically or otherwise. At least not to the village itself. We've decided to allow him to stay. The question now lies in integration. The final word, we believe, belongs to you."

The Torterra rumbled, a sound like distant thunder beneath the earth. "The roots of a new tree… do not ask permission to grow," he said slowly. "But the grove still decides if they are protected. Or left to the frost."

Juno took a small step forward and inclined her head respectfully. "He has proven to me, to many of us really, that he has a right to belong for as long as he wants."

Elder Ilyra hummed softly, her gaze vaguely following a mote of light in the air. "There is still a fog around him," she said. "But it is not of his own making." She turned her eyes to Auri now. "You are a question without an answer. And still, you do not demand resolution. That is rare and respectable."

The Dusknoir floated forward. His voice was gravel, low and deep. "Do you understand what it means to be part of this place? Even just temporary?"

Auri straightened slightly. "I’m starting to. And I want to learn more."

The eye narrowed faintly. "I hope so. It doesn't matter how long you want to stay, while you are here, our rules are law."

"I know," Auri said quietly. "And I'm willing to accept that."

The Dusknoir Elder gave no reaction. But after a moment, he floated back again.

The Ninetales Elder finally spoke again. "Children in our care are not judged as tools or threats. They're seeds that we are to nurture until they can continue to grow on their own. I question why our presence is even necessary here. The answer seems to be clear. A young Pokemon asks for our support, we're obligated to offer it." She looked directly at Captain Kaen. "Let him remain. Not just in stone and rule, but in spirit and story. Let the child live his live in peace here for as long as he wants."

Captain Kaen bowed slightly, as did Juno. "Then it is settled," the Arcanine said.

Risa stepped forward again. "We’ll make arrangements," she said. "Training, education, the same as with the other kids. He shall be granted this new start."

"Integration," the Torterra mused. "A good place to start… for a spark in waiting."

Auri blinked, caught off-guard by hearing this reference to him from a third Pokemon now. "A spark?"

Elder Ilyra gave a mysterious smile. "Names tend to find you long before you find them."

Only the Dusknoir remained silent, the weight of his gaze lingering like a final judgment, before he turned without another word and melted back into the shadows of the chamber’s far wall. The meeting slowly began to unwind, the formality fading into quiet murmurs. The decisions had been made.

Auri turned slightly toward Juno, who gave him a small, proud smile. "You did well," she murmured. Auri wasn’t sure what exactly he had done. But something in his chest felt a little lighter.

The heavy doors of the headquarters creaked open as Auri stepped back out into the daylight, blinking slightly as the sun met his eyes. The stone beneath his paws was warm now, the cool of morning long gone. The quiet that hung over the plaza outside felt… strange, after the weight of the discussions inside.

Yuki was sitting exactly where they’d left her, sprawled on a nearby bench, kicking her legs idly, staring off toward the trees beyond the village edge. The moment she heard the doors open, though, her head snapped around.

"Auri!" she chirped, hopping off the bench in one bound. "Finally! I thought they were gonna keep you in there forever!"

He smiled faintly. "It definitely felt like it."

Yuki tilted her head. "So? What happened? You don’t look disappointed, so I’m assuming that’s a good sign?"

"It’s… settled," he said. "I’m officially allowed to stay. Not just tolerated, but accepted."

Yuki’s eyes lit up, and she punched the air with both wings. "HA! I knew it! I mean, of course they came to their senses! I’ve been saying you’re not a threat since the beginning! I told them, didn’t I!"

  He chuckled. "You did."

She grinned, beaming now. "So? Did they say anything else?"

“No,nothing. It was just… a lot of old Pokemon deciding what to do with me now."

Yuki made a face. "Ugh. That sounds less fun."

"They’re assigning some kind of training, the same one you all apparently get," he said. "All the guards were there as well, of course. Juno backed me up. So did Zekel, I think. Even Myra didn’t object too hard."

Yuki blinked. "Myra? Wow. Are you sure they didn’t accidentally replace her with a nicer version?"

Auri smirked. "She glared at me the whole time. So no."

"Whew! The universe still makes sense!"

He paused for a moment, glancing up at the blue sky framed by the crater rim above. "I think it’s real now," he said. "This whole thing. Living here. Being part of it."

Yuki’s smile softened. "You are part of it! I told you that the past days already! You just had to get everyone else to realize it too."

He looked at her, earnest. "Thanks for being with me through it."

She waved a wing like it was nothing. "Tch. I said I was sticking around, didn’t I? That means through all of it. Even the boring meetings."

"Especially the boring meetings," he echoed, grinning.

Yuki nodded once, satisfied. Then her expression shifted slightly. "Sooo… if you’re staying here permanently…" She looked around dramatically. "Where are you staying?"

Auri blinked. "...I have no idea."

Yuki gasped. "They accepted you without giving you a room!? That’s so rude! You should go back and demand a house! A big house! With windows and an orchard and maybe a hot spring-!"

"Yuki," Auri cut in, snorting. "I don’t need a hot spring. I don't think Newleaf Village has any hot springs."

"...Okay, but imagine how cool it would be."

"I just need a place to sleep."

She tapped her beak. "Well… we could ask Elder Ilyra, but her place is full of potions and scrolls and weird glowy dust. If you bump into the wrong shelf you might turn into a Spoink for a week."

  "Tempting."

"Then there’s Uncle Kaen, but his house is basically one big fireplace with walls. He's a fire-type after all."

"I think that would be too hot for me."

"Durro has a spare room! But he never talks, and the whole place smells like crushed berries."

  "Mm… It's an option."

Yuki brightened. "Wait! What about the empty house near the herb gardens next to the training field?"

Auri frowned. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Well, we have an empty house there, as far as I know! It used to belong to some Pokemon who moved out of the crater after they got old enough. It’s been empty for years! I bet we could get the Elders to approve it! Or Juno. Or maybe Eri. Eri knows everyone."

"I thought Eri’s a tailor, not the mayor."

"Details!" Yuki spun in a little circle. "C’mon, it’s perfect! It’s close to everything, not falling apart too badly, and you’ll be right near the guards' training area!"

Auri raised an eyebrow. "So you’re saying I’ll have no excuses not to work hard."

"Exactly!" She beamed. "Plus, I can stop by whenever I want! We're going to do so much exploration!"

He gave her a mock-stern look. "You’re going to be a menace."

"I will be you exploration partner, not a menace!” she disagreed with a chirp.

They turned toward the winding path that led back through Newleaf Village, side by side, the midday sun spilling through the trees above them. They reached the house by early afternoon.

It stood at the edge of the herb gardens, just before the ground began to slope up toward the training fields. The roof was uneven, one shutter hung loose, and a wild tangle of grass had overtaken most of the small yard, but the structure itself stood firm.

Yuki padded up the path confidently, wings on her hips. "Okay, yeah, maybe the window’s a bit wonky," she said, glancing back. "And the garden’s sort of... been eaten by the wilderness. But look at this door! That’s a sturdy door."

Auri tilted his head. "You brought me to a mossy box with optimism issues."

"It’s got character!" she insisted, kicking the front step with a smile. "And it’s not that bad!"

Before Auri could respond, the faint sound of footsteps on gravel caught their attention. Turning, they saw Juno approaching from the other path, a folded scroll in one hand, her expression even.

"Yuki," she greeted calmly. "I should have known you'd already brought him here."

Yuki blinked. "Wait, you knew about this place too?"

Juno stopped a few steps from the overgrown yard and offered the scroll toward Auri. "Captain Kaen had it listed on the property registry. The Elders approved assigning it to you once everything was decided."

Auri took the scroll slowly. "So… it’s mine?"

Juno gave a small nod. "Officially. You’ll need to clear the yard, maybe get someone to check the roof tiles, but the structure looks sound. It’ll take work, but it’s a place of your own."

Auri looked back at the crooked building. His building now, apparently. It still barely felt real. "Thank you," he said softly.

Juno’s gaze lingered on him a moment longer before she turned to go. "Don’t let it sit too long. Empty houses tend to collect mischief."

"Are you talking about Yuki or Miu?" Auri muttered to himself as she left.

Yuki snorted. "I am deeply offended."

  "You’re also not denying it."

  "Rude."

Auri smiled faintly, running a paw along the doorframe. The wood was rough but sturdy. It’d take time. Repairs. Maybe some borrowed tools. But it was his. "Well," he said, stepping back and surveying the mess. "Where do we even start?"

Yuki flexed a wing like she was about to dive into a Dungeon. "Step one: Kick the door open dramatically and hope there aren’t any Spinarak nests!"

  "…Why do I feel like that’s not a joke?"

"Because it wouldn't be the first time Dungeon Pokemon nested in abandoned village buildings! That's what Juno actually meant when she said empty houses tend to collect mischief!"

He sighed, stepping forward to push open the door with a low creak. The smell of dust greeted them. The air inside was thick and warm, stale but still breathable. Old furniture stood covered with sheets, the floorboards squeaked with every step, but sunlight filtered in through cracks in the shuttered windows, painting everything in quiet gold.

"It’s not terrible and I see no Dungeon Pokemon," Auri said after a moment.

"It’s good," Yuki said proudly, wings crossed. "But we’re gonna make it great!"

  He glanced at her. "We?"

She shot him a grin. "You didn’t think I’d let you do this alone, did you? Of course I'll help!"

Outside, the wind rustled through the tall grass like soft laughter. And at that moment, Auri knew he felt incredibly thankful to Yuki.
