Chapter 7: Partnerlook

  Chapter 7: Partnerlook

The sun rose lazily over the village, casting long, golden beams across the early morning mist. Somewhere between the quiet rustle of leaves and the distant call of a harmless Dungeon Pokemon, the village stirred back to life.

Auri blinked awake slowly, vision blurry, until the shape of a tall figure resolved beside him. Juno was obviously already awake and had clearly taken it upon herself to wake him up.

"Morning," she said in a gentle tone. "Sleep well?"

Auri nodded, sitting up with a soft yawn. "Yeah… I think so."

"Good." Juno set aside a small jar of salve and gestured for Auri to lift his arm. "Let’s take a look at your healing process before your friend bursts through the door."

Auri huffed out a laugh but obeyed, letting Juno carefully unwrap the light bandages around his side. Her eyes glowed briefly as she examined the healing tissue and his Type Energy storage.

"Well," Juno finally said, "I’m happy to report you’re nearly good as new. Still a bit tender, but nothing to keep you out of trouble. Unless that trouble involves cliffs, wild dungeon ambushes, or letting Yuki talk you into something that sounds fun but absolutely isn't."

Auri grinned slightly. "That… does sound like her."

"Mmh. Not that you're much better in that aspect." Juno rewrapped the wound with expert precision. "One more day of taking it easy, and your type energy storage should be fully recovered as well and I can declare you healthy again."

As if summoned by name, the door creaked open and Yuki poked her head inside. "There you are!" she chirped, wings fluttering. "You ready?"

"Almost," Auri said, hopping down from the bed.

Juno raised a brow at her. "And what exactly are you two up to today?"

Yuki beamed. "Well! First we’re picking up our scarves from Eri, she promised they’d be done by now! Then I figured it’s finally time to show Auri around Newleaf Village properly! Maybe swing by home, too, if my parents aren’t off hunting mushrooms or doing some other wird gatherer stuff!"

"I see," Juno said mildly. "Nothing strenuous?"

"Just walking and talking! I promise!"

Juno didn’t look entirely convinced, but gave a slow nod. "Very well. Then have fun and be careful, okay?"

  "Got it," Auri said.

"Good." Juno turned away and added, with a ghost of a smile, "But really, try not to get into too much trouble, you two."

"Don't worry we won't!! Yuki grinned as she stepped aside to let Auri through the door.

The morning air outside was crisp and fresh, sunlight slanting gently between the trees and rooftops. The village was slowly stirring awake, with a few early-rising Pokemon already tending to gardens or carrying baskets across cobbled paths. They made their way toward the central part of the village again, where the streets grew quieter and more shaded.

Yuki walked ahead, humming something under her breath, while Auri kept pace beside her and soon enough, Eri's familiar little shop from yesterday came into view. A soft bell chimed as they stepped inside. The warm scent of fabrics and dried herbs filled the air again.

!Ah, there you are.! The voice came from behind a half-closed curtain, and a moment later, Eri emerged, her leafy arms brushing off bits of thread from her apron. The Leavanny gave them a quick once-over and nodded approvingly. "I was beginning to wonder if you two had overslept."

"We didn’t!" Yuki protested, twitching indignantly. "Auri just walks slow!"

"Mm." Eri disappeared briefly behind the curtain and returned carrying a small wooden box. Inside lay two identical scarves, deep blue fabric with subtle silver thread woven through, shimmering gently when the light hit it. They weren’t overly ornate, but they had a quiet elegance to them. At the center of each scarf, seamlessly integrated into the design, was a small, protective pouch, just large enough for a single stone.

Yuki let out a delighted squeak. "They’re perfect!" She immediately grabbed hers and began wrapping it around her neck.

Auri picked up his own more carefully, running a paw across the material. It felt soft but strong. The weight of the scarf was just enough to remind him it was there.

"They actually match completely, down to the threads themselves, don't they?," he said, surprised by just how similar they were. Sure, they had asked for partnerlooks, but he hadn't expected that level of similarity.

"Of course they match completely!" Yuki beamed, tugging at his scarf to adjust it properly. "Can’t have partner scarves clashing, you know?"

  Auri blinked. "Wait… partner scarves?"

Eri chuckled. "Well, it’s not every day someone comes in asking for matching pieces with hidden stone pockets. Some might get ideas, you know."

Yuki flushed, flicking back for just a second. "T-That’s not why! I just thought it’d look nice if we… you know… matched a little! You know that, you're just teasing us!"

Eri's laughter echoed through the room and Auri found himself smiling before he could stop it. "They do look nice. Thank you."

Eri nodded in approval. "Glad to hear it. And don’t worry, those pouches are secure. The stones won’t go anywhere unless you want them to."

She paused for a moment, her gaze softening just slightly. "Take care of each other. The threads in these scarves are strong, but even strong things wear thin if you forget what binds them."

Neither of them really knew how to reply to that, so they just nodded. The bell chimed again as they stepped outside, their new scarves fluttering gently in the air. The dark blue fabric shimmered faintly in the light, silver accents catching the sun like stardust, a perfect match between the two of them. Yuki was practically skipping as she walked, twisting her neck to admire how her scarf swayed with each step.

"I still can’t believe we’re actually wearing matching scarves," she grinned. "We look like a proper duo now! Like, full explorer-ready! Don't you think so?"

Auri gave a small chuckle, adjusting the way his scarf sat against his fur. "It’s... comfortable. And surprisingly light, considering we're storing literal stones in them."

"Well of course it is," Yuki said proudly. "Eri’s the best! She made me my satchel I use for gathering herbs too, y'know. That it's still in one piece and without holes speaks of its quality!"

"So," Auri asked, glancing at her. "You said you wanted to show me around properly today?"

Yuki nodded. “Yup! I figured now that you’ve been here a bit, you should see the rest of the place! Meet the other weirdos."

  "Other weirdos?" he repeated.

"You’ll see," she said with a smirk.

They started off along the main path, past a few wooden archways and hanging wind-chimes. It was still early, but the air was already humming with soft village activity. Smoke curled lazily from the central kitchen area where, according to Yuki, Fyra’s inn stood, and they could hear faint humming from nearby gardens. Yuki took the lead with practiced ease, guiding Auri along smaller paths as they entered the artisan section of the village.

Their first stop was a small wooden carving station tucked beside a flowering tree. A Mawile sat there, her large steel jaws folded neatly behind her, her real hands delicately working a block of wood into something round and smooth.

"Sela!" Yuki called. The Mawile looked up, gave a quiet nod, and returned to her carving.

"She’s a bit quiet," Yuki whispered to Auri. “But super observant. She makes tools, totems, and the little charms people hang on their satchels or clothes.”

Sela paused her work and gave Auri a glance. Her eyes lingered on his scarf, then flicked back to his face. "You’re the new one," she said softly. "The one with no memories."

Auri gave a nod, unsure how to respond. "She doesn’t talk much, but she knows way too much about everything," Yuki murmured as they left. "No idea how she manages that. But just like Saph, she's one of the Pokemon close to reaching the strength level of an Elder."

Their next stop was a round clearing filled with the strong smell of herbs and drying leaves. A large Kangaskhan bustled around the central storehouse, stacking bundles and checking off lists scrawled onto parchment leaf-tags.

  "Kama!" Yuki called out, waving.

The Kangaskhan turned and smiled immediately. "Yuki! Will you finally return those spare bandages you borrowed last week?"

"...No, but I can explain!" Yuki chirped. "I needed them for somthing important, I swear!"

Kama gave an exasperated sigh but smiled fondly. Then her gaze turned to Auri.

"And this must be the Pikachu I’ve heard so much about. Come to stir up more trouble with this one, hmm?"

"More like she drags me into it," Auri replied dryly, which made Kama laugh.

"He’s got a spark of humor, that one," she said warmly. "Good. The village needs more of that."

They didn’t stay long, Kama had too much to sort and re-sort, but she sent them off with a wrapped snack and a reminder to visit more often. From there, they passed a thick trunk-shaped structure where a Cinccino was already sweeping nonexistent dust from the porch.

"Don’t say anything," Yuki muttered to Auri before they could be noticed.

  Auri raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

"Because that's Vella. And if she sees a single speck of dirt on you, she’ll dunk you in a cleaning trough and you’ll never be the same."

  "…That bad?"

  "You’ve been warned."

They hurried past, luckily without any incidents occuring.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

Next was a visit to Tharo, the Fletchinder courier of the village, who was perched atop his roof sorting messages. He greeted them with a dramatic flair and tried to guess Auri’s life story based on 'wing feel' alone. Most of it was likely wrong, though without his memories it was hard to tell. Some of it was eerily accurate.

Finally, they came to a low house surrounded by potted plants and spiraling vines, the home of Shae, the Shaymin.

Yuki slowed a bit here. "Shae’s… well, she's a mythical, she just doesn't look the part. Incredibly strong, probably comparable to Vian or Miu. She's the most approachable of them, actually. But still weird."

The little Shaymin looked up from trimming some herbs and gave them a warm, quiet smile as they approached. Auri clearly felt that she was quite strong as well, but it was a little bit less overwhelming then with the other two mythicals. "Welcome," she said simply. "The wind speaks well of you today."

Auri tilted his head. "You mean… metaphorically?"

"Not really," Shae replied gently. She didn’t ask questions, only offered them a seat and a drink of cool berry tea. The visit was short, but peaceful, and when they left, Yuki looked a little more thoughtful than usual.

By the time they circled back to the center of the village, the sun had fully risen and the morning bustle was in full swing. Music from Lennox the Ludicolo drifted lazily across the square. Eloi’s soft bell chimes rang from the center as she prepared for the midday notice-call. She was a Chimecho, so it fit, he supposed.

Auri took a breath. "I think," he said, "I actually like it here."

Yuki beamed. "I told you. It's a little bit weird, but great!

He adjusted the scarf at his neck. "It fits."

"Good," Yuki said. "Because we’re not even done yet."

Auri looked at her. "What else?"

Yuki smiled. "Oh, there's still Bront, Norrik, Bren, Irren, Darn, Reek and the Elders that all hold quite important roles in our community! Though, on second thought, we really shouldn't bother any of them. But etiher way, you still have to meet my family, of course!"

The walk toward the edge of the village, where Yuki's family apparently lived, felt different.

It wasn’t far, just a gently winding path past a patch of wildflowers and small sun-baked stone fences, but Yuki, for once, wasn’t talking like a waterfall.

She muttered here and there, pointed out a crooked berry bush, made a light joke about Auri’s fur still being slightly uneven on one side, which it definitely wasn’t, but her usual energy was… muted.

Auri glanced sideways at her. "Nervous abot me meeting your family?"

She blinked, snapped out of her own thoughts. "What? Nooooo. Nervous? Me? Please! Never!"

"You’re definitely far more downtrodden than usual."

"I’m just being considerate of you!” she shot back, then sighed. "Okay. Maybe I'm a little nervous."

  Auri let her talk.

"I mean, I don’t usually bring anyone home with me," Yuki admitted. "While I do have friends in the village, I'm not really close enough with any of them to bring them home with me. And its not like my family doesn't know them, either. The village is small, everyone knows everyone here. There was just never a need. Also, my family loves teasing me, and that will probably extend to anyone I bring home with me."

That got a laugh out of Auri. "Don't worry, I think I can deal with a bit of teasing, especially if it's primarily directed towards you. Still, thanks for the warning."

They rounded the final bend, and a small two-story house came into view, sturdier than most of the village homes, with clay shingles on the roof and old climbing vines wrapping around the wooden frame. Auri hesitated just a few steps from the gate, noting the training dummies in the yard and a wooden pole snapped clean in half. The faint scent of smoke and flour clung to the warm air.

Yuki paused, too, fluffing up her feathers and letting out a breath. "Okay. Just… be yourself. Don’t be weird!"

Auri shot Yuki a look. "I wasn’t planning on being weird."

“Good! Because if you embarrass yourself in some way, I can promise you it will be the talk of the vilage soon, thanks to my mom!"

Auri just rolled his eyes. "Really, Yuki, I'll manage. Are you always like this before visiting home? You’re acting like I’m about to be roasted alive."

"As I said, I don’t usually bring anyone here," she muttered. "That's a first time for both of us. And my family is completely out of fire types. You could be roasted if someone wants to."

"…Fair. Still, let's hope that won't happen. I quite like my fur."

The moment Yuki nudged the wooden gate open with her foot, the front door creaked and a voice called from within. "Yuki? Is that you? And- Wait, are those footsteps I don’t recognize?"

A tall Cinderace appeared in the doorway with an apron half-tied at her waist, the tips of her paws dusted with flour. Her fur was ruffled in that I’ve-been-baking-and-fighting kind of way, and her eyes scanned the two of them with the precision of someone who noticed everything before you realized she had. Her gaze flicked down, just briefly, at the matching dark blue scarves both Pokemon wore.

"Well, well, what are my old eyes seeing here," she said with a smirk. "Yuki, are you bringing home friends and matching accessories now? Do I need to have a serious talk with your friend later?"

Yuki let out a strangled sound, eathers puffing like she’d been struck by lightning. "What- No! It’s not- We just got them, okay? And he’s not- Well, he is my friend, but not like- Ugh!” She dragged a wing down her face and groaned. "…Hi, Mom. And please stop the teasing."

The Cinderace didn't react to her daughters apparent shut-down and leaned slightly to one side to get a better look at Auri. "You’re the Pikachu that fell from the sky and lost his memories aren't you? The one my daughter found? One could say that is quite the romantical first meeting, isn't it?"

Auri blinked. "Uh. One could say that, ma’am," he answered diplomatically.

Yuki groaned softly beside him. "Please just stop, mom. It's the first time I brought a friend home, please don't make it even more embarrassing than you already have."

"Oh, Yuki, you really shouldn't count on that," Yuki's mother replied breezily, stepping aside. "Anyways, come on in, both of you! Your friend's not getting away without something sweet. I'm Mira by the way. I guess you got these scarves from Eri? She does lovely work. But most folks don’t go for coordinated scarves unless they’re trying to make quite a clear statement."

"It’s not a statement!" Yuki flailed. "We just needed something to hold the stones M- Uh, from a Dungeon, you know!"

Mira raised an eyebrow, but didn’t press. "Mmhm. Stones from a Dungeon. Matching partner scarves. Mystery boy from outside the crater." She tapped her chin, pretending to consider, obviously not surprised at all that her daughter was exploring Dungeons in her free time. "You know, this sounds an awful lot like one of those sappy adventure books your sister keeps reading and insists are good literature."

  "Mom!"

Auri, for once, couldn’t help a small laugh. "It’s honestly more about function than fashion."

"I believe you," Mira said, clearly not believing him at all. "Still, they suit you. Both of you."

Thumping steps echoed from the stairwell. "Did someone say matching scarves? Oh, this I’ve got to see this!" A Raboot rounded the corner, stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of Auri, and raised an eyebrow. Then a slow grin spread across her face. "Yuki. Is this your friend?"

Yuki squawked like someone had just kicked her. "Ayra! No! Not like that! I’m allowed to have friends without them being-!"

"I didn’t say anything," Ayra said innocently, leaning on the bannister.

"You implied. That counts," Yuki replied with a huff.

Ayra smirked. "Just making sure you’re keeping your standards high. I’m Ayra by the way," the Raboot added, offering a nod to Auri. "I’m the older one."

"You should be thankful for that," Yuki grumbled.

Mira chuckled from the kitchen, already slicing a fresh piece of tart. "Don’t mind those two. They’ve always been like this."

Auri had all the time still stood somewhat awkwardly in the doorway, but Mira gestured toward the table. "Go on, sit. You look like someone who’s never been tackled by multiple fire-types before."

"...It’s a new experience," he admitted, and sat. Pretty much everything would be, really, but somehow he doubted he ever had a similar experience, even if he still had his memories.

The floorboards creaked behind him. Heavy steps. Deliberate. A presence that seemed to carry weight even before the source entered the room. A Blaziken stepped into view, tall, broad-shouldered, the feathers on his arms charred black at the ends, like someone who never truly stopped training. One eye bore a faint scar. The other narrowed sharply as it locked onto Auri.

"…You’re the kid we've heard about, aren't you," he said, not really a question, and voice like distant thunder.

  Auri straightened slightly. "Yes, Sir."

Yuki gave a weak little wave. "Hi Dad."

The Blaziken crossed his arms. "You’re less impressive than I imagined."

"I’ve been told that," Auri replied flatly. By the entire guard, in fact. Somehow only the psychics actually saw him as potentially dangerous and no one seemed to just believe them. Not that he would complain about that.

The Blaziken’s brow rose slightly. Then he stepped forward, offering a clawed hand. "Daigo. I’m Yuki’s father. If you’re worth her trust, then I’ll give you the chance to earn mine."

Auri stood and took the hand. It was calloused, strong, the kind of grip that had spent a lifetime in battle and never once dropped anyone he’d chosen to protect. Auri really questioned why he wasn't part of the guard.

"I’ll do my best," Auri said.

  "I expect nothing less."

Yuki, still hiding behind a kitchen chair, hissed, "Okay can we now stop making this into some kind of diplomatic summit? This is not what I expected when I decided I’d bring someone home!"

“You brought a guest, didn’t you?” Mira said sweetly. “We’re just being good hosts.”

"Auriii, tell them this is weird!"

Auri shrugged. "What am I supposed to say? It's a first for me, how would I know?"

"...You could have just agreed with me, y'know!"

Mira slid a plate over to him. "Eat. Before it gets cold."

The tart was still warm, the crust flaky, the berry filling sweet with just the right kick of spice. Auri blinked at the flavor, then looked down like the plate had just personally taught him a life lesson.

Ayra laughed. "First taste of a real fire-type tart?"

The conversation turned, slowly at first, but then in gentle currents. Daigo asked about his battle capabilities. Mira asked what exactly Juno did to help him heal. Ayra wanted to know how he and Yuki met and winked when they both tried to talk over each other. At one point, Ayra smirked across the table. "So. Matching scarves already, huh? That's not suspicious at all."

Yuki gave her a death glare. "They're practical! Nothing else! Now stop the teasing!"

Ayra gasped, faux-shocked. "Oh my goodness. That's what we're calling it now. 'Practical'."

Daigo grunted around a bite of tart. "Looks more like partnerwear to me."

Yuki groaned and dropped her face into her wings. "I hate this house."

"You love this house," Mira said sweetly.

"I love some people in this house," she replied still not lifting her face out of her wings.

Auri leaned over, whispering just loud enough for everyone to hear, "I think the scarves are pretty nice though."

Yuki threw an oran berry at him. Just as Yuki had warned him, there was much teasing going on in this household. But it wasn’t just teasing. There was care beneath it all. No interrogation, nor any distrust. Only the quiet intensity of a family that clearly valued each other and wanted to understand the boy who had wandered, scarred and uncertain, into their daughter’s life.

When they stepped outside over an hour later, the sun had just started to dip behind the crater walls. "Well that wasn’t embarrassing at all," Yuki said, voice dripping with sarcasm.

Auri just shrugged. "They seem nice."

"They’re chaos. They’re my chaos, but still."

He smiled. "Thanks for showing me."

Yuki bumped his side gently. "They like you. You should come by more often."

A pause. Then Auri said, quietly, "To me, that means more than you think. Still you know that I'm unlikely to actually take you up on that offer often."

"We'll see about that. Still, there's one more place I want to show you before we're done! Come!"

Yuki led Auri up to a low ledge near the craters inner wall, just high enough to give them a view across the village rooftops and the distant trees that ringed the basin. The spot was quiet, tucked away behind an old, half-withered tree and rarely visited except by a few adventurous kids. From up here, the sounds of the village became a soft, far-off murmur, like waves brushing against the shore.

The sun by now had dipped far enough behind the crater walls for the shadows to stretch longer and the light to take on a gentle, golden hue. The warm tones caught in the dust and leaves, turning the world soft around the edges.

Auri sat with his knees drawn up, arms resting loosely atop them. The breeze ruffled his fur, catching the dark blue scarf around his neck, the tiny silver flecks stitched into the weave glinting faintly in the fading light.

  "It’s peaceful," he said quietly.

"I wanted you to see this place!" Yuki replied, her voice low but cheerful. She had plopped down beside him in her usual fashion, no formality, just feathers and energy settling into stillness for once. "One of my favorite spots. Especially when I need to think."

Auri tilted his head slightly. "Do you come here often?"

"Not lately," she said, glancing out over the view. "Too much to do. But when I was smaller, I used to sneak out here all the time. Felt like I was on top of the whole world, y’know? Even if it’s just the inside of a crater. One whose confines I still plan to leave someday."

He gave a soft hum of acknowledgment. "It’s strange. Everything here still feels… new. Like I don’t quite belong yet."

Yuki looked at him sidelong. "But?"

"But," he said, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, "for the first time, I think I really want to. Belong, I mean."

Yuki’s eyes softened, her usual spark still there, but gentled. "You already kinda do," she said.

Silence fell again, but it wasn’t awkward. It was the sort of silence that didn’t need to be filled, the kind that settled between people who didn’t mind just existing near each other. A faint chirp echoed from somewhere beyond the ridge. The breeze picked up slightly, tugging again at their scarves.

"I want to know how it is outside of this crater or even just further away from the village,” Yuki said suddenly, her voice softer now. "I guss this is just my itch to always explore something new. But… I like this. Right now. One day I will see more of the world, but that still has time."

Auri nodded slowly. “Yeah. I don't think I could remain rooted in a single place either. But for now I think this is just... nice.”

Yuki looked at Auri, hesitated, but then decided to just ask. "Auri... would you actually leaving the Umbral Abyss again one day?"

Auri sighed. "Honestly, I believe it to be an inevitability. Already, your local mythicals are too interested in me. So yes, I probably will."

Yuki nodded. "I see..." And the two of them remained, two shapes against the waning light, still wrapped in warmth and calm.
