No one knows how or why the Colossal Doors appeared; there were no warnings, no signs in the sky, no tremors beneath the earth-one night they simply existed, towering and unnatural, and when one finally opened, creatures poured out from the darkness beyond, turning streets into slaughter grounds as soldiers fired helplessly at bodies that would not fall, only for the monsters to retreat back through the Door before it closed, leaving behind a silence heavier than the screams that had filled the air; it was later discovered that the creatures only emerged at night and that the Colossal Doors had appeared all around the world, standing dormant by day like silent monuments, and even more unsettling was the realization that the Doors did not lock people out-if someone approached and touched one, it would open willingly and allow entry, which led to a fleet of soldiers venturing inside with weapons and confidence, yet only three returned, broken and blood-covered, having killed nothing while everyone else died within; days later those three began manifesting strange abilities, and after military investigations, experiments, and trials, it became clear that these powers were far more effective against the creatures than ordinary weapons, prompting more soldiers to enter and more to return changed, shifting society itself as some refused the powers out of fear, some awakened abilities too weak to fight and were barred from entering again, and others gained strength capable of challenging the monsters-those individuals becoming known as Slayers.
