Chapter Four: Baby Dragon Care

On the first morning of being newlyweds. Raphtalia and Emerome woke up to the constant chirps and cries of Toanleri. "She sure is vocal." Emerome yawned, "More like needy. Perhaps a Child of God is more different than the other species than just ability and appearance. As no baby dragon cries out for attention." Raphtalia sat up. "I'm going to have to update my knowledge on this species. Since its needs are definitely different from just the other types of dragons...and I thought that the Undead Drake was weird." Raphtalia got out of bed.

"Are we going to a nearby library, my lady?" Emerome asked. "No, I'm going to a library to buy out any book about the Child of God species. You'll have to stay here and take care of her. Maybe you could find out what she needs to be happy." Raphtalia opened the closet, picking out a scarlet dress. "Okay, my lady..." Emerome saluted, "...How do you take of a dragon, my lady?" Emerome tilted her head. "You feed it, bathe it, groom it, potty train it, play with it, train it, and instill a bedtime for it. I have the basics written down for you in your diary." Raptalia zipped up her dress.

"E-eh? Yo-you went through my diary?" A heavy blush crept up Emerome's face. "Heaven's no. That implies I only did it once. I read your diary once a day to see the new entries. Since you don't have a lock on it." Raphtalia smiled. "My lady saw my most embarrassing entries multiple times." Emerome hid her face in her hands. The two heard tapping on the window. Turning to it, the two saw Toanleri staring at them before restarting her chirps and cries. "Very needy, like a child. Fitting for the name. Also, you should call me something other than 'My lady'. We're wives now, more than just master and servant." Raphtalia left the room.

Emerome got out of bed, walking to the window. Emerome opened the window, "There you go, girl." Toanleri stuck her head through the window, chirping and crying more. What does she want? Maybe she's hungry? "I'm coming out, Toanleri. Just wait a bit." Emerome quickly got dressed in her maid uniform, heading outside. As Emerome stepped outside, she was pinned to the ground by Toanleri. Toanleri once again chirped and cried. "Are you hungry, girl?" Emerome stroked Toanleri's cheek. Toanleri leaned into the caressing, licking Emerome's hand.

"So you just want attention?" Emerome tilted her head. While petting Toanleri, Toanleri jerked her head back, chirping and crying louder. Wha? She was just accepting my affection. What changed? Emerome managed to get out from under Toanleri. "You're not hungry...I think? Then how about a bath?" Emerome suggested. Toanleri dug her tail into the ground, chirping and crying louder. That's...probably for the best. I've never seen a dragon get bathed. I don't think I saw a lake around here. Emerome sighed, "What grooming?"

Toanleri turned her head, continuing to chirp and cry. "Training?" Emerome watched Toanleri flick her wings at her, "Potty training?" Emerome suggested. Toanleri Chirped and cried even louder. "It's too early to instill a bedtime for you. Do you want more affection?" Emerome walked closer to Toanleri, seeing her close all of her eyes. "Th-then what do you want? How can I make you happy?" Emerome placed her hand on Toanleri's hind leg.

Let's see...she was accepting of my affection until she licked my hand. I didn't touch anything that the taste buds of a dragon would reject. Why would she reject everything after she licked my hand? Maybe she wants my lady? Emerome scratched her head. My lady told me that only Succuverns, Devil Hydras, and Fiend Wyrms were judgmental of body types. So what could it be that my lady would have that I don't... Emerome looked at her hand.

"Wait a minute...Toanleri, do you want...mana?" Emerome asked. Toanleri stopped chirping and crying, slowly flapping her wings. Was my lady's mana on me faintly enough to trick Toanleri that I had mana through her scent? Then that means...she needs mana as part of her caring process...and I have none of it. "Toanleri, can you wait until my lady comes back? She'll have all of the mana you want." Emerome rubbed Toanleri's hind leg. Toanleri looked down at Emerome before looking up to the sky. Toanleri slowly nodded, curling up with a pout.

Emerome heard Toanleri's stomach begin to growl, as Emerome began to look through her diary to find the most common food among the dragon variants. As Emerome served a platter of fish, leaves, rocks, and milk. She watched Toanleri hesitantly refuse the meal. She's hungry, and she hesitated, so she likes the options I picked for her. Does she want mana with her meal? Or does she want it prepared by my lady? Emerome cocked her brow. After a few hours of trying and failing to get Toanleri to do anything because of her lack of mana. She noticed Toanleri perk up and walk off.

Following Toanleri, Emerome saw that Toanleri was making her way towards Raphtalia the moment she saw a figure walking towards them from a distance. Using her magic, Raphtalia swiftened her pace, making her way to the two in under thirty seconds. "Emerome, why are you two out here?" Raphtalia asked, "I uh...I found out a big thing that Toanleri needs." Emerome muttered. "Really? What is it?" Raphtalia tilted her head. "Mana. She seems to want mana for her meals, grooming, training, potty training, bathing, and even play." Emerome answered.

"Weird...no dragon needs mana for everything care-related, I didn't even see anything like it in these books all about the Child of God books." Raphtalia scratched her head. "But...she refused everything until I told her to wait for you to come back to have your mana," Emerome said. "Oh yeah...I forgot about that one thing." Raphtalia scratched the underside of Toanleri's chin. "What is it?" Emerome asked. "Dragons are very prideful and connected to mana wave-lengths. They refuse anything from anyone who either doesn't have mana traces of their hatcher or doesn't have greater mana of their hatcher. Since I have limitless mana, and you have no mana. Even with Toanleri recognizing you as one of her owners, and probably as one of her hatchers, since she responds to you. Her pride got in the way the moment she was able to tell the difference between my mana traces on you, and your body not housing any mana." Raphtalia explained.

"So...I can't take care of her?" Emerome asked, "Oh, you can. Just when she's needy, she'll need me to share my mana with her." Raptalia answered. "Now let's get this needy girl here care." Raphtalia transferred a small portion of her mana to Toanleri, making her extremely happy with the overwhelming mana received.
