Looking at the number of boars, Civ began to count.
1,2,3,4 … The number keeps getting up, and his breathing starts getting deeper.
“Forty!!!!” his mouth hit the floor.
With this number of boars attacking them. It was really a miracle that they were able to defend this walking disaster.
“I think the best thing to do right now is to skin these boars and cut the important parts we need and meat.” The number of boars that were killed is more than enough for them to last a month. Anything more than that will consume a lot of time to process. It may also spoil the meat due to contamination.
The group started to line the hunted boars in 4 rows and 5 columns. Each row will be managed by two people to skin the boars.
Kivrah wants to add the other 5 boars.
“Wait Father!” Civ inspect the boar.
“This was the leader of the boars, right?” Civ looked at the eye, and it was still wide open.
“Yes. The other boars next to it were the boars that attacked the west side.” Kivrah pointed to the other two, whose eyes were also wide open.
“Alright, do not process that. Please burn them!”
Everyone stopped and looked at Civ. Kivrah was curious, “Why my Son?”
“These boars have eaten a human. Eating them makes us eat our kind.” Knowing this fact. The group they pickup these three boars right away and started a fire without hesitation.
Their plan is to get the loin part of the boar and its legs. Tendons and skin, and other parts can be used as a tool or weapon. Then discard everything in the river. Letting these carcasses in the wild might attract unwanted attention. This might cause another hoard.
As a protocol given by Kivrah, they need to cut the meat and smoke it right away since there is no sunlight. Their tribemen volunteered to help and make it. Kivrah was glad that his tribe was getting happier day by day. Not only does their mood improve, but also their health.
Their butchering ends at almost midnight. At the same time, they let the smoking of meat overnight with enough firewood.
The camp slept with a full belly.
As the sunrise came, the hunting team started discarding the excess meat into the river.
They felt it was a waste, but they could not preserve this meat in the fastest way possible so that it would not rot.
Civ followed the meat being swept away by the roaring river.
‘If only we could find that ingredient. It will significantly lessen our reliance on hunting.’
He raised his head and looked into the sky, where the sky was just rising. A cold breeze touched his skin. His world right now is too small. But his plans might help him widen it.
Going back to the camp, everyone starts working on their own tasks. The hunting team was split into two groups based on their meeting with Kivrah and Civ.
One to gather some berries and resources. The other team is to check the north.
Civ led the team going north. While Horm will lead the team for gathering resources. Since he has experience with his firewood team. Together with the firewood team, they can gather more resources to fortify the camp.
This time, Arsh joined Civ’s team as additional manpower. Then Vel was assigned to be the new leader of the crafting team. Now that Civ confirmed the skill of Vel, he is much fit for this position. Vel gladly accepted it and started teaching the crafting team on what to do.
After the re-organization meeting, the scout group started preparing the tools they needed. While waiting, Civ and Kivrah have a walk around the camp. The scene of devastation of the boars was visible around the wall. Broken wood, scratched wall, blood-stained grass. Even with enough preparation, a determined animal can still break through defences.
“Thank you son. For making it come true.” Kivrah started the conversation. He was looking around the broken walls in the north.
“Making it come true?” Civ was puzzled.
“The dream of the Shaman. It feels like Son Goddess is constantly guiding us.”
“I did what I could to make our tribe safe Father.” Civ humbly bowed to his Father.
Kivrah stopped and stood in front of Civ. He holds his Son on both of his shoulders.
“For that, I thank you. Without your determination and persistence, we might be running for our lives.”
What Kivrah said is true, not only true but terrifying. If the tribe collectively agreed to leave the camp, it would definitely wipe them out. The size of that horde was more than enough to trample and kill them. Remembering how he treated his son in that crucial moment. He feels that it was the biggest mistake that he made, not only as a Father, but also as a leader.
“I would like to say sorry, my Son. On how I react when you want to defend your tribe. From now on, I will give my full trust to you.” Kivrah smiled. His eyes were also visibly glistening.
“It is fine Father. You are also concerned about the safety of the tribe. But I will also thank you Father, for giving me a chance. You patiently listened to me, even though it was a dangerous plan.” Civ felt the warmth of his Father. He looked him in the eyes and smiled.
They walk again and look around. When they saw that the scout group was starting to gather on the north side of the camp. Kivrah asked one last question to Civ.
“My Son, do you have anything you need us to focus on here in the camp? Just tell me, we’ll try to accomplish it!” Kivrah confidently offers his time.
“Really? Are you sure Father?” Civ was smiling from ear to ear when he heard it.
Kivrah has a gut feeling that it was not a good idea to offer something to Civ. But he already said what he said.
“Ye-Yes!” Kivrah delayed his response.
“Thank you Father. Please listen carefully.” Within a minute, Civ rapid-fires all of the things he still needs to work on and prepare. From drying the skins and tendons to preparing the materials for barricades and so on.
“That’s all. Thanks Father!” Civ tapped his Father’s shoulder two times and left without waiting for his Father’s response.
Kivrah stood still. His face looked like aged a year or two. He stepped back, felt light-headed.
“Tsk, I should not offer it. But since he already said it, might as well tell the people about it.” With the first few steps, he tried to balance himself, then walk straight back to the cave to get the materials.
“Is everyone already here?” Civ asks the group. Looking around, it seems everyone is present. With Ras and Pil still recovering, Safi, Luk, Arsh, and Yan will accompany Civ.
“Nothing missed?” Just to make sure, everyone checked their spears and knives to see if it was present.
“Good, just give me a moment.” Civ walked away from the team to talk to Vel, who was walking towards them.
“Civ, may the Sun Goddess protect you. Please tell me, do I need to make anything for now?” Vel's eyes were sparking with curiosity and readiness.
Seeing this expression, Civ can’t wait to make this guy experience a headache by thinking.
He smiled and shook his head. “Nothing right now. Just focus on what the Tribe leader will say. When I’m not busy, I’ll teach you some things.”
Vel nodded and bowed. “Then please come back safely. Also, everyone.”
The scout group smiled and started their travel.
For this journey, they walk carefully. Hearing any sound and checking any footprint. The travel was slow, with full attention to any unusual sound or movement. After an hour, they were able to travel to the place where the two boulders were standing. The surroundings look fine.
“Safi, can you hear the boars from here?” Civ and the group take a seat on the ground while eating their dried meat.
Safi closed her eyes.
tuk
tuk
tuk
“I hear some sounds, but not that strong,” Safi answered.
When they got their confirmation. The tense atmosphere disappears. But they still keep quiet.
Luk was tapped on the shoulder by Civ. He quickly followed.
Without any chatting. They silently walk toward the place where they usually saw the sounder.
When they arrived, they gulped their saliva. Instead of getting smaller, the sounder has gotten bigger. About 4 or 5 sows with multiple piglets that were too many to count. Ahead of these are boars around 6 or 7.
‘I guess it was the male boars.’ The size of the sounder might be big. But since they have already seen it. They can prepare for a defense.
For now, Civ does not want to provoke these boars. Aside from getting enough food for the month, they do not want another war with this boar as soon as possible. Tuanir is already right at the corner, and they need to focus on that instead of the food.
Satisfied, he and Luk swiftly left the place.
When they returned, Civ explained to Arsh and the group that everything is fine for now. The distance from here to their camp is too far for boars to leave their offspring. In case they are still in the mating season, the male boars might also not leave the place.
Everyone heaved a sigh of relief. They planned to return to the camp while also gathering some resources.
While traveling back to camp, something bothered Civ’s thoughts.
‘The footprints of the boars I saw in the sounder were not that many'. Forty-two adult boars were present on the attack. While he did not see that much of a footprint. The fact that they were attacked by a horde of boars was out of the ordinary. It feels like someone dropped them there.
So many scenarios are running through Civ’s head, but he suppresses them.
Speculation will only be speculation without proof. They only visited the places they had already seen. But that doesn’t mean what Civ saw was correct.
‘I’ll try to ask Father and the Shaman about it later.’
Civ is also having a headache thinking about this. But it’s better to share the headache with the experienced ones.
When they arrived on the fallen log where they had their first hunt. They take a break. Looking around, Civ smiled.
“These are all dry now. Maybe we can start improving our weapons.” Civ is pinching some of these yellow substances that look like small stones that stick in the “X” marks.
“Improving weapons?” Arsh tried to get one of these. It was a bit hard.
“I’ll teach you when I confirm how it works.” Civ starts collecting these.
“Whew! I’m getting thirsty. Can’t wait to return to the camp so we can drink at the river.” Luk's mouth was already dry. With the sun shining bright. Being thirsty is one of the things you would expect.
Hearing this, Civ quietly observed his team. He noticed everyone was already thirsty.
As one of the humans need, water is one of the necessary resources they should have. Civ wanted to take his time to make it. But he also realized that with the current situation they have. They need to explore the forest a little bit more to know the surroundings.
‘I’ll have Vel help me later with that.’
Thinking about what he needs to prioritize, he needs to make it before the next time they scout the north.
A couple of moments later, they left quickly and returned to the camp. As expected, they want to go right away to the river.
But they were stopped by Civ.
“Here, drink it.” Exiting the cave, Civ brought a jar with water inside it.
They started drinking one by one to quench their thirst.
“This is amazing Civ. I can’t believe we can hold water.” Yan was still trying to drink some.
The team takes a rest in front of the cave, and Civ moves on to find Vel.
He bumped into his Father, but Civ asked if they could talk about it later after the Sun Goddess slept. Since he needs to work on something. Kivrah agrees, and Civ called Vel.
When Vel meets Civ. His brows almost changed position at what he saw.
“What are these Civ?”
*********************************************************************************************************
Upgrading, teaching, and scouting
There are so many items in front of them. Some of it was things that he had not seen yet. Some of it was items that he is familiar with, but cannot point out the connection.
The items were from mud to ash, and the new yellow item Civ brought. Also, some other tools.
“Inspect these items and tools Vel. You will need to be familiar with all of it.” Civ brought a jar with water in it.
“What are you going to do with water? Are you thirsty?” Vel gazed away at the items and pondered why Civ was bringing this jar with water.
“Here, I’ll teach you how I created this Jar.” Civ put the jar next to the mud.
Then Civ detailed with Vel on what to do. From moulding and mixing the mud with grogg, to the coiling method, and some finishing touches. He let Vel follow through and do the same thing. Even though he already expected it. Civ was still surprised by how Vel was able to understand quickly what needed to be done. For this test, Civ decided to create a bowl. It's easier and faster to make. This can be done within a day.
Civ and Vel were happy with what they were able to create. But a question still comes into Vel’s mind.
“What will be the purpose of this item that we created? It was much smaller compared to Jar.” Vel tried to compare the two items side by side.
“This thing that we created has more purpose than you think. Now let’s dry this in the sun.” Civ and Vel walk to a big flat stone and rest bowls there.
“Let’s leave it for now here. I’ll call you later once we need to dry it in the fire.” Understanding the process, Vel smiled from ear to ear while nodding
“Yes Civ. Let me work on the other thing for now.” Vel cheerfully left, and Civ went to the north side of the camp.
Now that he has time, he carefully inspects the walls. The walls were almost fixed now from all sides except the west side. Recalling the damage, they need to improve their defenses.
The first thing they need to do is to fortify the walls. By Civ’s instructions, he requested the team to add a horizontal log onto the top and lower part of the wall as rails. Civ wanted to add this to the initial plan. Due to time and resource shortage, he needs to set it aside.
He also added some wood braces against the wall to add additional strength. In case there is a strong animal or monster that will try to charge head-on into the wall. This makes sure that the walls are stable and have less chance of being breached.
The braces and additional rails were added on the west and south. Civ wanted to apply these fortifications to the north and west sides. Once he had already had enough materials for another feature of the wall. For now, the only entrance to the camp is in the west, and a ladder for emergencies.
It’s been almost two hours since the inspection and assistance in fixing the wall. He returned to the campfire near the cave where the bowl was drying in the sun. Vel was waiting for him while knapping stones.
Next thing Civ inspect was the bowl. It was dried already. Ready to fire it in the campfire. The bowl was brown in color and had a smooth surface.
“This looks good. Now Vel, next is we need to put this into the fire.” Civ placed the bowls next to the campfire.
“You mean we burn this?” Vel stopped knapping and sat in front of Civ between the campfire.
“No, tsk. Let me explain it to you after.” Civ let Vel observe how they can pre-heat the bowl before firing.
A couple of minutes later. “This is good. Let's put it in the middle and keep placing firewood.”
Civ placed the bowl's rim down and stoked the campfire to start firing. He instructed Vel to take care of the fire and keep stoking the campfire for the whole day. Civ left Vel to check some materials he needs for the next item he plans to create.
While looking around. The firewood team just arrived, and Horm immediately looked for him. They brought wood and palm leaves for cordage.
“Civ, we just went from the east. But we noticed something.” Horm sat on the ground. His face was serious.
“Tell me Horm.” Civ also sat next to him.
“We saw boar footprints. But we did not see a boar.” Horm has a tense look.
Civ looked at Horm while tapping the ground.
“Are the footprints big or small?”
“Well, big. If I guess, it’s the footprint of an adult.”
Civ paused for a second. ‘So only one, and an adult.’
He is also confused about the situation. The boars that they are monitoring were already far from them. But seeing footprints in the east gives him a headache.
“I got it Horm. Thank you for telling me. I’ll check with my Father about this.” Civ does not have a good feeling about the footprint, but he hopes it's not that serious.
After resting, both of them walk in separate directions to work on their task. Civ went back to Vel and instructed him to stop stoking the fire and let the fire die. Next, Civ looked around the camp and was able to find the materials he needed. Then he went back to Vel. His conversation and gathering materials consume him for almost an afternoon.
Returning for the last time for today, the fire had already died down, and the embers were the only ones left. Using a stick, he moved the ashes. There, the bowl they fired was already finished. He picked up the bowls using two sticks and placed them on a flat stone. The result was better than he expected. The insides were brown, and the outside had a faint black on the bottom due to the charcoal. It now has cracks, and the insides are also smooth.
When he flicks the bowls -
TING
TING
TING
A recognizable, sharp ring was heard from the bowl. Civ smiled.
Seeing the smile from The Chosen One, he was also happy. But he feels that there is something not right.
“Great! For the last test-” Next to him was a jar full of water.
The bowl is still warm but manageable to hold. He placed the bowl next to the mouth of the jar and filled it.
He placed it, poured the second bowl, and filled it. They wait for a couple of seconds, and nothing spills below.
“Great job Vel. Now you know how to do this!” Civ was satisfied that they were able to finish it in a day and also make it with Vel.
“Since we created it, how can we use this?” Vel was still confused about why they created it.
“You’re right. I should explain it to you.” Civ throws the water and pours the bowl again. Rinsing it. Then he poured another.
Then he drank from that bowl.
“Ahhhh. Like that!” Civ looked at Vel, feeling refreshed.
“Ohhhhh. Looks like I get it now.” Vel nodded. From his perspective, he sees the bowl as a tool to hold water. Since the jar is heavy and hard to drink from. He can use the bowl to get the water he needs from the jar. Looking at the bowl, he thinks of other ways he can use or improve it.
“Since the Sun Goddess is going to sleep, let's continue tomorrow. Please rest, and I’ll talk to my father about your new task.” Civ maliciously smiled.
That smile sends shivers down Vel. Right now, he knows that Civ has a plan that he will not like.
They conclude, and Civ heads straight away to the Shaman’s hut, where his Father is waiting. When he arrived, he saw his Father and the Shaman eating. So he takes one of the dried meats and starts eating it also.
After the dinner, Civ reported what they saw earlier. Based on the series of events, this also gives Kivrah confusion. His head aches more when Civ also mentioned the footprints spotted on the east side.
“Haaaaah looks like we need to start looking around our surroundings more.” Kivrah heavily sighed. He wants to help the team check all of these issues. But managing the camp and the additional improvements needed in the camp hinder it.
“I advise you to check first the footprints on the east. Then, if you can, check the north to see if you can see anything that will lead us to the reason for the horde showing.” Looking at the current situation, it feels safe. But this does not mean they need to treat it as the end of the battle.
Kivrah and Civ left the Shaman’s hut. They did not discuss the mystery about these boars. Instead, they talk about the improvements needed in the camp.
But listening to the ideas Civ suggests, he can't help but scratch his head. Still, he listened carefully.
Before Civ left sleep for today. He killed the campfire in front of them by putting a bunch of dry sand until all of the wood was covered. He stepped on it, making sure it was compact.
The camp slept early today since they were already deprived of sleep for a few days.
The next day, the scout group prepared early. While waiting for the others, Civ talked to Vel and instructed him on what to do today. Same with Kivrah. Both of them were already overwhelmed, but still wanted to fulfill their duties. After meeting with the Tribe leader, the group left the camp.
Their plan was to move to the east and then walk to the north. Based on the description from Horm, he saw it further east. Almost half an hour later, they were able to discover some tracks. It was not fresh, but still visible.
“An adult boar!” Luk blurted.
All of them tread carefully from this moment. They need to know where this is. Otherwise, it might endanger some of their tribesmen who are gathering materials.
From here, the following and the track lead them going north. Deeper section of the northwest. It was the section of the area where trees and vines
wrap each other. The middle and east side of the north was a fairy tale-like place. Full of beautiful trees and green grass. But on this side, this is straight from a horror movie. If you went inside, you don’t know if you can leave.
“Do we need to go there?” Yan asked.
Everyone tried to inspect everything in front of them.
“We need to. Else we might get another horde sooner.” Civ also tried to stay calm. But the fear of the unknown starts creeping into him also.
The vines looked back. It feels ominous. They hesitate to move forward.
“I think we need to spread. Try to see if you saw any footprints in other areas.” Civ instructed.
They only saw one pair of footprints. So Civ thought they might see the footprints from the horde in this area. The group carefully looked around to see any entrances.
But then -
“Ahhhhhhh!!!” Someone shouted. Everyone ran towards the sound. Holding their spear in battle mode.
When they arrived, they saw Kes was slumped on the ground. Shaking.
“I-I-I saw someone. It's looking at me. Its eyes looked like ours!” Kes were still shaking
Arsh immediately sat next to Kes and comforted her.
But suddenly, a foul, unbearable smell glued to their nose.
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
Everyone tried to cover their nose. But the smell was still seeping, and they could smell it.
“What was that?!” Safi cannot help but feel nauseated by this smell and back off a little.
The part of the forest where the smell was coming from, the vines were already tangled up like webs.
Luk and Civ slowly walk towards the source of the smell. Instead of using spears, they use their knives. As they get near, the figure starts getting visible.
When they saw the figure. Luk was also visibly shaking.
“What is that Civ?” Luk nudges Civ, who is intently looking at the figure.
Those eyes were eyes of despair and struggle. That figure has human-like eyes!
“How did this happen?!”
*********************************************************************************************************
Inventing a new substance
Civ ignored the foul smell and got near it. It still stared at him. But he was familiar with this smell. A smell of decaying corpse.
Using his spear, he tried to push aside the plants. When the sunlight hits the figure, everyone holds their breath. It was an adult boar that was in the process of decaying. The face had visible insects and other stuff that was crawling. The white bone was almost visible. By checking the position in which this boar died, it seems it was entangled in the vines and unable to escape.
“This might be the boar where the footprint came from.” Based on the body of this boar, it was already an adult, which matches the description from Horm’s report.
“Let's leave this area and look around. Once you see multiple footprints, tell me immediately.” Civ and everyone leave this area and spread out their search more.
A couple of minutes later. Luk was running towards Civ.
“I saw many footprints on the west.” Luk was catching his breath. He was sweating due to running, but because he saw something bad.
Civ recalled everyone first and then followed Luk. Luk guided them where he saw the footprints. Upon reaching the location, Civ felt heavy. The footprints they saw were not only multiple but also overlapping.
“If we are correct, this is where the horde came from.” Civ's body shivered. If he were a day or two late on creating the tools he needed, they might not be able to prepare for the horde. This location is on the edge of the forest. It will be hard to notice with the naked eye, unless you intentionally search for it.
‘Isn’t too precise of a timing.’ Civ shakes in his heart.
They inspected the entrance, and it was 4 ft in height right now. If they go inside, they might need to bend forward to walk. It looks like a tunnel made with vines as walls. From the looks of it, the leader of the boar might bulldoze the vines to force his way through. The tunnel was also dark going inside. It's like a danger calling them to their demise.
“Should we go inside Civ?” Luk smiled while asking.
“NOOOOO!!!” Everyone collectively replied.
“They are right Luk. We need to report this to Father.” Civ has a bad feeling about this. He wanted to go inside. But if necessary, he will not go inside unless he and his team are prepared.
“Let’s return to the camp.” Civ decided to leave this area. Without proper tools and a plan, it’s better to return than to force their way through the other side.
The scouting team returned to camp early, bringing some materials on their way back.
Civ looked for his Father. He found him learning how to knap stones from Vel, who is working on pottery.
“Father, how was learning that?” Civ sat in front of them.
“It was harder than I imagined. I can’t believe Vel and our other tribesmen are able to make spears and knives out of these stones.” Kivrah was still trying his best to chip out some small chunks of stone flakes for his stone knife.
Civ just smiled. But he also cannot believe it. A few days ago, they are a camp that will almost be wiped out from the world. But now, his tribesmen were starting to look healthy. Everyone in the tribe was trying their best to contribute to improving the lives of one another.
But before Civ went off topic, he started reporting to his Father.
“I think we already found where the boar was.” Civ went serious and respectfully started.
“Proceed, I’m listening.” Kivrah, on the other hand, stopped his knapping and sat in front of his son.
The report started from the confirmation of the footprints to the decaying boar. Then, how the tunnel was found.
Hearing the location where the horde came from, Kivrah was visibly shaken.
“What do you think Father? Will there be a problem?” Civ stared at his Father without blinking. Trying to see any unexpected reaction.
“N-no! Nothing! I just remembered something. But ignore it.” Kivrah dryly laughs as he organizes his thoughts. But then his face becomes serious.
“Right! About the passage. Please look into it. If you can, try to check where that passage will lead us.” Kivrah clasped his hands tightly.
Civ noticed these subtle changes from his Father. But decided not to push through and inquire about it.
“I understand Father. I’ll make preparations.” Civ bowed and left the hut after some discussion about the improvements of the camp.
After Civ left, Shaman Mashu stared blankly at Kivrah and asked. “Why did you not mention it to him?”
Kivrah heavily sighed. “I do not think we can tell it to him. It was my assumption that they are still there, but we cannot confirm it.”
Kivrah stared blankly at the sunlight that entered the hut.
When Civ was outside of the hut, he was greeted by Pil and Ras, that was already recovered.
“Good to see you both doing fine right now!” Civ hold their shoulders.
“It was not that serious. A day of sleep will make us recover. But the shaman insists on letting us rest for another day. Ras scratches his head. Helpless with the shaman's persistence.
“There is nothing Ras and I can do about it. By the way Civ, I heard from Luk that you found where the boars came from.” Pil's eyes were filled with excitement.
Knowing these two, Civ sighed in his heart.
“Let's talk about it with the team. Follow me.” Civ gathered the hunting group. Then they went to the back of the cave.
He let the group sit in a circle. Standing in the middle was Civ.
“Good that we are complete right now. I just talked to our Tribe leader. The plan is to enter the tunnel and see where this tunnel will lead us.”
Everyone felt silent.
“Don’t you think that is dangerous?” Arsh looked worried.
“It is, but we need to prepare. Even prepare for the worst.” Civ felt the worry in the group.
“But do not worry, I have a plan. If you also have a plan, please share it with the group, and let’s think of the best way to do it.” Everyone agrees.
The group collectively understands what they need to do. If they do not do it, they might have the same problem in the near future if they leave it unknown. It is better to inspect that area instead of being afraid of thinking about it.
The discussion progresses smoothly. Everyone shared their thoughts and was able to come up with a plan that will ensure everyone’s safety.
“Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts. I’ll let the Tribe leader know, and tomorrow we’ll leave early.” Civ felt the worry he felt was lifted a little more.
The discussion lasted for almost an afternoon, and they dispersed. The Tribe leader also mentioned that the hunting group was allowed to take a rest for the whole day. Some of the group practice their spear-throwing skills. While some learned cordage making and stone knapping. Everyone wants to avoid slacking off. They want to continue improving the camp by improving themselves. Civ was touched on how the people in their camp were diligent.
Next thing Civ did was to look for his apprentice. He immediately found the back of Vel, who was sitting, busy and in deep focus on molding clay.
“Veeeel!!!” Civ called Vel
“Oh Sun Goddess!! Civ!” Vel jumps.
“Hehehe. You easily got scared. How was the progress?” Civ teasingly smiled at Vel, whose face was dirtied with the mud.
“For the one you requested, I was able to make it. I’m drying it right now next to the cave.” Vel meant on the other side of the cave.
Civ peeked where the pottery was placed, and he was satisfied. It was two jars already made and was twice the size of the jar he created.
“That jar looks good! Once we were able to make more of that bigger jar, we could store more water!” Civ was excited for the future.
Vel was almost finished on his third jar.
“Once you finish that, I’ll teach you something again.”
Hearing that the Chosen One is teaching him something new. He was exhilarated and quickly finished the last jar for today.
Once finished, Vel looked for Civ. When he looked for him, he found Civ in front of the campfire, digging. Besides Civ, there were the bowls they created and some of the tools he saw last time.
“I’m finished with the last jar Civ. What should we do next?” Vel sat next to Civ, observing what he was doing.
“Great timing! Nice! It came out fine!” Civ picks up a black item in the pile. His eyes were sparkling.
“What is that?” Vel leaned forward a little bit. Hoping to understand what he is seeing.
“Hmmmm, this is Charcoal!” Civ enthusiastically introduced it to Vel.
“What does this do?” Vel also picked up from the pile. When he held it, the black color stayed in his fingers. He tried to smell it, but there was not much.
“This, not much right for now. But I try to show you is - Hey Vel! Do NOT LICK IT!” Civ was startled to see Vel's tongue almost touch the charcoal.
Eating the charcoal for him is not much of an issue. But he was caught off guard by how unpredictable the sequence of events was.
Vel stopped and smiled shyly at Civ.
‘Aarrrgghh this kid.’ Civ wants to scold Vel, but it's not that he made a mistake. It was only out of curiosity.
“Focus and look at this Vel. If you have questions, ask immediately.” Civ prepared his ingredients and then lit the campfire again.
He divided it into the yellow substance and then put it in the bowls. After that, he let it rest next to the campfire to warm it up. While waiting, Civ disassembles his spear. He removes the cordage and the stone spearhead. After a couple of minutes, the yellow substance started melting.
“Oh it turned into water?!” Vel was confused more than curious.
“Great. Vel follow what I will do.” Civ picked one of the bowls, and Vel followed. The bowl was hot, but it was manageable for their fingers.
After that, Civ crushed the charcoal and sprinkled it into the bowl. He mixed it using the stick, and once he mixture had turned black, he added the last ingredient.
“The final part, a dried fiber from the palm leaves.” Civ rubbed it between his hands and and it was cut into pieces since it was a bone-dry fiber. He sprinkled it also in the mixture
Vel carefully followed Civ's steps and mixed the substance. When it turned goey, he noticed Civ was smiling.
“It worked! I can’t believe it is possible!” Civ do the next step. He smeared plenty of the black substance in the shaft and in the bottom of the spearhead. Next is he carefully places the back of the spearhead into the shaft. Then immediately tied it tightly with cordaded. Then applied some more on top of the cordage. Vel also follows it.
After a couple of minutes, the back substance cooled down.
“Vel, try to tug the spearhead.” Civ smiled while teasing Vel.
Vel followed Civ’s instructions and tried to tug it. But his eyes widened.
“It did not budge!” Vel's mouth was wide open. He tried it in different directions, but it did not move.
“This is amazing Civ! What should we call it?” Vel was excited.
“Let’s name it…. Black glue!” Civ revealed.
“Black glue. That sounds easy to remember. This is great Civ. I’ll let the team know to apply this to the spears we currently created.” Vel was really impressed with this item.
“Please do. Please also tell them my apologies that they need to remove and reattach it.” Civ was feeling sorry about it, but it was necessary.
“Do not worry Civ! They will understand.” Vel also wants to apply this as soon as possible.
One thing Vel learned last horde was that their spears were easily removed from the boar's body. Most of the boars he inspected had only a spearhead attached to the body. If not for the barricades, they would have a hard time killing those. Having this black glue makes it hard to remove and will cause more damage to the boars.
After this, Vel did not continue applying more glue. Instead, he tried to learn more about pottery by self-studying. Civ, on the other hand, did the same thing he did last night by creating more charcoal for future use.
The next day, the hunting group planned to leave the camp early. But before they brief.
Kivrah stood up straight. Looked at the hunting group and said. “It's time for you all to change your covering!”
*********************************************************************************************************
Scouting the tunnel
Hearing this made everyone from the hunting group surprised, but their faces brightened. This was one of the discussions of Civ and Kivrah planned for the past few meetings with the Shaman. Since they have a surplus of animal skin, Kivrah wants to reward his people. First will be for the hunting group. Kivrah and the Shaman secretly worked together to make this possible. This should be given right away after the horde defense. But due to Civ and the other two being injured, Kivrah decided to postpone it. Now that there are a daunting task, this is the best time to boost the morale of the hunting group.
“With the efforts and bravery you showed during the last horde attack. I reward each of you with an animal skin for your coverings!” Kivrah signaled his hand, and the Shaman handed them their clothes.
Everyone was excited to wear it.
The design is a simple covering. It just wraps around the private parts of the body. But for the group, this is a huge improvement! The use of leaves and grass as clothes. They usually change it almost every day. Using animal skin, the group will not worry about changing their clothes every day.
“We humbly accept your reward, Tribe leader.” They thanked their tribe leader and bowed in unison.
“Well done everyone. Please use it wisely. Now, please have a safe trip. The Sun Goddess will guide you with her warmth.” Kivrah sends off the group.
The group left with a smile on their faces.
When they arrive at the entrance, Civ reiterates the plan as a recap.
“What we will need to do is we need 3 pairs to inspect the tunnel. Who wants to volunteer?” Civ looked around. Aside from Horm and Arsh, Ras and Pil also volunteer.
“Let us enter the tunnel Civ.” Pil energetically answered.
But before Civ replied, he quickly poked both ribs of Ras and Pil.
“OUCH!” Both of them groaned in pain.
“I will not let you get in there. You both are still recovering. Be on the lookout.” Civ smiled while teasing these two. Civ also wants to have them join. But with their injury still recovering, they need to take it slowly.
When Civ asked again, the group was set. First that will go in will be Civ and Luk, next will be Safi and Arsh, last will be Horm and Yan.
The plan will be that they will crawl in the tunnel and every group will be away from then a few feet apart. They will communicate from time to time to check the status of the team ahead of them. Then, if there is no response, they will need to crawl back to the entrance to report the remaining group.
Civ and Luk go first. After a few minutes, Arsh and Saf, then Horm and Yan.
They slowly crawled, but as they went deeper, the light was getting dimmer. The smell of moistened earth and grass was everywhere. Civ also noticed that the tunnel was an L zigzag.
‘How in the world does that boar think about this?’. Civ wants to revive that boar and kill it again because of that boar's pathing.
They communicate from time to time and let Safi and Arsh know that everything is fine ahead.
But when they got further, a putrid smell was seeping into their noses.
‘The decaying boar!’ Civ and Luk immediately stopped.
“Safi, Arsh. Let's stop for a moment.” The group stopped. Then Luk and Civ discuss.
“Civ, should we go through?” Luk was sweating heavily now.
“I do not think this is safe for now.” Civ sat down and checked the surroundings.
They can try to push through. But what he was afraid of was that the smell might be so overwhelming that it might disorient them.
“Should we try?” Luk asked.
“Alright, let's do it.” Civ agreed.
“Let's continue!” He shouted to Arsh and Safi.
The smell right now is not that strong. But as they crawl, it's getting stronger. If the pattern of this tunnel is consistent, they should be able to crawl away to where the corpse was located. When the smell was too strong, Civ asked Luk.
“Can you hold your breath?” Civ started having a hard time enduring the smell.
“Yeah, I can.” Luk was also having issues with it.
They reported to Safi and Arsh about the smell and continued the travel. The tunnel was getting dimmer. With the help of a little sunlight that penetrated the vines, they were able to navigate.
After a couple of zigzags, the smell gradually disappeared. Civ reported it back, and Safi and Arsh replied, confirming the report.
“Let’s take a rest!” Civ and Luk sat. After catching their breath, they continue the travel.
Other than the dimmer tunnel and the smell that had gone away. The travel went smoothly, and they continued crawling.
But they heard Safi.
“Civ, I heard something!” Hearing what Safi said, both of them paused.
“What was it?” Civ replied. He felt that his heart was beating faster.
“I think it was not a step but a different sound! Like a wind!” Safi explained.
‘A wind?’ Civ was confused by what Safi said.
“Alright, we will continue.” Luk and Civ looked at each other and nodded.
Instead of slowly crawling, they increase their pace. After a couple of steps, the tunnel was getting wider and higher. Getting higher to the point that they can walk by leaning forward.
Then –
WWWWHOOOSSSHH
The sunlight hinders their vision like a flashbang. Then a strong gust of wind stops them from moving.
“Uhhhhggg.” Civ and Luk raised their hand to block the sunlight. When their vision recovered, a new place welcomed them.
“What is that?” Luk walked ahead, and Civ followed.
“Watch out!” Civ stopped Luk. When they looked down, it was a field of greenery. It was not by grasses but by tree leaves!.
“Oh boy!” When Civ looked at what was in front of them, he understood where they were now.
They are standing on a cliff.
‘A few steps on the cliff!’ When Civ tries to measure how high they are, he feels like it is about 80 to 100 feet high!
Realizing this, both of them gulped a mouthful of saliva.
“Thanks Civ,” Luk stared at Civ with beads of sweat running down his face.
“Be careful next time. Make sure your vision covers your surroundings before moving.” Civ remained Luk with concern.
Luk nodded.
Civ walked to the entrance of the tunnel and shouted to Arsh and Safi that it was safe. Civ and Luk waited for the rest. When Horm and Yan exited the tunnel, they took a rest for everyone to eat.
Everyone sat facing the cliff. Now that Civ has more time to look around, he can’t help but be in awe of the nature of this world. They are in front of two mountain peaks. Below them is a sea of trees. If Civ is correct, the trees are almost 75 to 88 ft tall.
The cliff where they rested was a slope. The path going up is turning to the right. The path going down was straight for a long distance, and it turned left if you are facing the down slope.
Civ wants to go down, but with their main purpose for today, the footprints of the boars are leading them to the top.
The group rested and had their fill.
“Is everyone ready?” Civ looked at his team. They all answered with a nod.
From this point, they slowly walk upward. On guard, they hold their spears on their shoulders.
“I hear footsteps,” Safi whispered.
Civ and Luk swiftly walked ahead while the rest waited in their position.
When they reached the top, tall grasses were everywhere. But it was only in the front. Luk pushed aside the grass in front of them.
They peeked at the slit. Their eyes widened.
Civ and Luk again gulped their saliva.
What they saw is a bigger sounder! The number of sows was more than his fingers could count!
This is not only a sonder. This is more like a colony of boars!
A colony at their doorstep. Civ felt shivers in his spine seeing this many. Mixed with them are some male boars that are courting some of the sows. But what caught Civ's attention was that these types of male boars had long tusks. It is similar to the ones who attacked them. The only difference was that their body hair was not that long. But they have a mohawk hair in the middle of their head, until the back of the neck. If Civ's guess is right, all of the male boars have these kinds of body features.
Looking at this raised the question about the horde. ‘Was there a territory battle also last time?’
The questions keep popping up in his mind as he goes along the possible sequence of events. But one thing is sure right now. They need to be careful not to agitate those boars. Now that they are still recovering from the past attack. They need to not only increase the defense, but to increase the barricades around the camp. Might as well add more types of defenses.
Luk and Civ wanted to leave for now. Since they do not want to attract more attention. They let the rest of the team go back instead of walking towards their location. Based also on what Safi said about the number of footsteps she is hearing. They understood the situation.
The number of the boars here is too much for them to handle right now. Especially, they are at the edge of the cliff. It will be hard for them to escape with these limited options. Civ tried to survey the location one last time, but something caught his attention. A leaf that one of the sows grazed. It was a familiar leaf that he usually ate when he was a child living in his rural hometown.
Civ wants to jump in the middle of the boars and confirm speculation. He takes a deep breath and calms his heart.
‘We need to take one step at a time.’ With this, he stopped his urges.
On the other hand, one of the boars felt something, felt like there was someone was watching. But when the boar looked at where it came from, he only saw a few grass leaves swinging left and right. It grunted softly and returned to courting one of the sows.
“Whew! That was close.” Luk said as he and the whole group walked back down to the tunnel.
When he and Civ were going to leave where they stood, Luk had a feeling that someone had noticed them. In the nick of time, Luk grabbed Civ by the shoulder.
“Sorry Luk.” Civ admitted his shortcomings in that short amount of time. The plant that he saw was too enticing not to look at.
“It is fine Civ.” Luk was gasping for air as he was nervous at that moment.
“What did you both see Civ?” Arsh quickly asks, wanting to assess the situation.
“Remember the horde?” Civ looked at the group.
“Yes?” Horm replied.
“It was bigger. Much, much, much bigger compared to the horde.” Civ eyes were intense. A feeling of grave danger.
Everyone gasped.
“What should we do next?” Yan asked.
“Let’s go back to the camp first. I’ll report this to the tribe leader and see what we can do.” This matter is something they need to think about first. They need to collectively discuss this and make sure everyone is on the same boat.
The group nodded. They started to enter the tunnel. Right now, Horm and Yan went first, and Luk and Civ went last. Civ looked at the vast trees while the wind was blowing.
‘Is there any other humans near us?’
This question stuck in his head the first time they entered this new place.
“Civ.” Luk called his attention.
“Let's go.” Civ and Luk went last to the tunnel.
Aside from the decaying smell, they were able to return safely to the other side.
When they arrived at the other side.
They saw Ras and Pil in a mess, clutching their ribs. While Kes was dealing the final blow to the bleeding boar.
Civ's eyes widened, “What happened here?!”
*********************************************************************************************************
Discussion about the other side
THUD
Kes slumped to the ground. Catching every breath she can. Horm and Arsh checked on Ras and Pil. Civ and Luk, on the other hand, check on the killed boar.
Based on the boar’s body, it has the same stature as the mohawk boars they found on the other side of the mountain.
‘This might be a lost boar from the group, or- a scout.’ Having an organized group of boars is one of the possible reasons. But judging from the intelligence of the boars, he might think it as a possibility.
‘No other way to find out other than waiting.’
Civ is convinced now to be prepared, as prepared as possible, for any attack that might happen.
Seeing that the boar was not breathing, Civ let Horm carry this.
Civ checked on the other two. What they need right now is to leave this place as soon as they can.
‘Can you still walk?’ Civ asked Pil and Ras.
Even though they are grimacing in pain, they nodded. Civ has no other choice but to trust his tribesmen. Luk shoulder support Pil and Civ to Ras. They quickly left the area and followed the safe path they usually walk to. The travel back was silent. Their energy was only focused on walking as fast as they could to return to the camp. Luckily, they did not encounter any boars on the way back.
When they arrived at the camp, they were immediately assisted by the crowd. Ras and Pil were rushed to the Shaman’s hut. They left the boar to be butchered. Then, the hunting group went to the back of the cave with the Tribe leader.
They sat in a circle while they drank water from the jar, and they passed it around.
“What happened to the three of you back there Kes?” The tribe leader started the conversation.
Remembering the sequence of events made Kes tremble. Safi and Arsh, next to her, hold her hands. Seeing the group wanted to comfort her, the trembling slowly subsided.
“I-i-it was a few moments before you all Civ and Arsh arrived.” Kes started.
What happened was that the three of them were just talking about something. Suddenly, the boar appeared in front of them. All three of them were shocked upon seeing the boar. The first reaction of the boar is to charge ahead of them.
Kes and the group's first instinct was to protect the tunnel to stop this boar from reaching the other group. With all of their might, they were able to hit the boar using their atlatl. But it did not stop charging. Ras and Pil charged at the same time, but the boar flew them away. But when it reached Kes, it stopped moving. Since one of the spears that penetrated the lower neck of the boar touched the ground. Then it deepened the penetration of the spear. Then Kes followed the instructions given by Civ to slice the neck open to deal the final blow.
After the Kes finished her story, she relaxed a bit. However, the crowd fell silent.
“You did great there Kes. Thank you for keeping the entrance safe. I will also personally thank Ras and Pil once they recover.” The tribe leader sincerely thanked Kes.
Civ on the other hand, has mixed emotions. He was happy that everyone was not gravely injured. But he is also angry that someone got injured.
‘If we arrived much earlier at that time. We should be able to overpower that boar.’ He felt helpless at that moment. But he heard someone calling his name.
“Civ, can you hear me?” The tribe leader had been calling him for a while now.
“Oh Yes. What are we talking about again?” Civ sat properly.
“About your travel in the tunnel.” Kivrah reminded him.
“Alright. Please listen carefully everyone.” When the crowd went silent, Civ narrates what happened inside the tunnel and what they saw on the other side. When the group heard about the bigger size of boars, they gasped in shock.
Kivrah went silent for a moment. Everyone went silent and looked at the tribe leader. Awaiting his decision.
“I have an idea in mind. But I want to know also your opinions on this.” Kivrah opens the discussion to the hunting team. Having the experience of fighting these boars. They should have enough knowledge on how to deal with them.
“How about we attack them head-on?” Horm suggested. Hearing this, Arsh, who was beside him, quickly slapped the back of Horm's head.
“Are you crazy? Can you see what happened to us when the boar was able to enter the wall?!” Arsh continued to berate Horm, and he reposed by scratching his head.
“Why don’t we wait for them in the tunnel? We can kill them when they leave the tunnel.” Luk asked.
“What if they created another tunnel? I’m sure they can do it.” Safi countered. Luk missed that part also and agreed with Safi.
The crowd went silent again, out of ideas.
Hearing the silence, Kivrah speaks. “Civ, what do you think?”
Civ quickly answered. “We stay here and defend. We improve our defenses. It is safer here compared to attacking them in other places.”
Kivrah nodded. For both of them, attacking them is not a good strategy. Aside from getting attacked in all directions. They do not have enough tools or ways to defend themselves. Also, when the group scattered, they might get lost in the forest and be killed one by one.
“You are right. That is also the idea that I’m thinking. Since we have enough food for now, the best way is to improve our camp.” Understanding the idea, everyone nodded.
“Since everyone agreed, let's work on it starting right now.” Kivrah stands up, and everyone follows.
When the group went for their designated tasks, Kivrah waited for Civ.
He holds his son’s shoulder. “You all did great my Son.”
Looking at his Father, the smile erased those worries in his mind.
‘Right, if we can defend it, there is no need to be worried.’ Civ resolves his heart.
“Thank you Father.” They both walk as the last in the group and discuss what needs to be prepared by the firewood team.
After his Father, Civ looked for Vel. He saw Vel enjoying his time working on different shapes and sizes of jars.
“Hey Vel, how is it going?” Civ sat beside Vel.
“Oh there you are Civ. Everything is great! I am enjoying this.” Vel tried to remove the dirt from his face, but it was smeared again by his hand.
Civ looked out of the cave. Next to it were jars, and a basin-like pottery was already made that is currently drying.
“Looks like it. Once you finish that Vel, wait for me at the back of the cave. I need you to help me for the rest of the day.” Civ tapped Vel’s shoulder. He did not wait for Vel’s response and left.
Civ brings the newly acquired skin of the boar and picks up some tools. Then he went to the back of the cave.
Vel followed Civ right away after he finished the jar he made. What he saw was that the boar hide was lying on the big flat stone while Civ was scraping the white part of the hide. He was removing it and placing these white and red materials on the side.
“What are you doing Civ?” Vel sat on the other side, facing him.
“This?” Civ throws a stone flake to Vel.
“Help me with this to finish it faster. Try to run the stone flake in the skin. But do not puncture it.” Civ instructed.
Vel nodded and followed the method Civ is doing.
After a couple of minutes, they were able to remove all of the white and red materials from the skin. What is left is the white part of the hide.
For Vel, this is a normal process. This is an essential step to make sure that they avoid the animal skin from rotting. What he was confused about was why Civ needs to work on this, since he can give this task to their other tribesmen.
“Civ, about this, why-” Vel wants to know the reason. But they were interrupted by one of their tribesmen.
“Oh Cho-Civ, we already gathered water and put it where you requested.” A teenage boy bowed next to Civ as he collected the cleaned hide.
“Oh please avoid bowing to me, or I will get angry.” Civ jokingly said, and the boy scratched his head.
“Thank you Axo. Just time. Vel follow me, I’ll teach you something new today!” Civ's eyes were sparkling again, looking at his apprentice.
Vel's mood brightened hearing what Civ said. Even though this might be a new task for him. He is more than willing to learn it.
“Please let me know what it is Civ!” Vel followed Civ.
They return to the campfire near the cave, where there's only ash in the pit. Outside of the cave, there was a basin that was full of water. There is also another empty basin. Civ scoops some ash in the campfire. Once he scoops an ash, he puts twice as much water. After that, he uses a stick and makes a circling motion inside the basin.
Vel’s uncertain eyes make him ask Civ. “Civ, what is that motion you're doing?”
“Oh this? I am mixing the water and ash?” Civ answered right away while focusing on the ratio.
“Mixing? What do we need it for?” Vel continued his inquiry.
Civ was caught off guard on that question. But he smiled.
“Remember what we did on the black glue?” Civ reminded him.
“Yes, I remembered it.” Vel nodded.
“That was mixing. We are combining two or more materials to make it into one.” Civ slowly explained it to Vel.
Vel pondered for a moment and nodded. “I get it now. But why what are we making now?”
Curiosity makes someone really ask more questions. Which Civ was happy about it.
“This mix. To put it simply, this is to remove the hair from the skin.” Civ explained.
Vel brows curled. “Why do we need to remove it? Does it make the skin not good for cold times?”
For Vel, this is counterintuitive. They use boar skin to prevent cold temperatures. That was what the Shaman explained to him when he asked Shaman Mashu last time.
“We are not using this for cold times. This will be used in a different way.” Civ answered.
What Civ is doing is to make a lye solution. He gradually mixed it based on the ratio that he remembered. Using this will make the hair soft and easily plucked by hand. Other than removing the skin, the purpose is also to make the hide clean and avoid rotting.
Since the skin was a bit thicker, he made the solution more concentrated. This is to make sure that when they soak it, the hair will be easier to pluck. After mixing it, he put the hide in the basin. He makes sure that all of the skin is submerged in the lye solution. Next is he covers it with palm leaves and brings it inside the cave. Since this is the only place where the temperature much likely to be controlled. He has no other option than to place it here.
‘I’ll just talk to Father about this. We’ll sleep by the campfire for the following days.’ Civ wants to make things easier for the group. They need this kind of sacrifice for a better future.
“Alright Civ, since we're done here, I’ll return to making pott-”. Vel was sneakily walking back when he was caught by Civ by the neck.
“Who said we're done? Did I say for the rest of the day earlier?” Civ looked Vel in the eyes.
“Right! I remember it now!” Vel was sweating beads, looking at Civ.
“Good! Now let’s go to the north side. Pick up some of the pointed wood there.”
They grabbed the tools they needed and headed straight to the north.
Arriving north, they saw Horm and his group were already waiting there.
Seeing the wood, some sharpened bones, and the water that they brought. Everything seemed ready now.
“Now it's time to dig deeper holes!”
