Chapter 24 - Building a wall

Holding two axes in both hands makes him feel like a Viking.

‘I wanna scream as a Viking, but it will make me weird.’ Civ playfully swung both. He felt that he could not use these axes simultaneously.

“Enough goofing around, I need to help the tribe.” Before Civ left, he instructed Arsh. If possible, they can produce 3 or more stone axes. With the project Civ is planning, the 2 stone axes might not be enough. Arsh also agrees with the plan and immediately starts working on it.

From what Horm said to Civ, they are going to look for bigger trees in the east. He followed the trail they created. Horm was also making marks in the area, so Civ was able to track them where they were.

“Hey Horm, found anything?” Civ saw Horm and two from the firewood team start cutting a 12-inch (30 cm) thick tree.

“We’ll this one.” Horm’s was visibly having issues cutting the tree.

“Civ good thing you already brought an extra axe.” His face brightened as a newly crafted axe was brought to him.

Civ noticed that the stone axe Horm was using was already broken.

“You should have told us Horm. Arsh and I will create one right away for you.”

Horm, even though he is diligent at his work. Should not stop him from speaking up about the struggles in his role to his friends.

“Sorry Civ, I know both of you are busy right now. I just want to do what I can do.” Horm helplessly explained his side to Horm.

“Well, you are doing badly right now. Better to talk to us next time.” Civ hands over the new axe to Horm.

“Let’s start cutting this tree.” Civ stands next to Horm. Horm nodded. They start to chip out the parts of the tree.

Civ was expecting that they would be able to make a significant cut to the wood. But they are chipping it inch by inch.

‘Hmmmm, this will take an hour or more.’

Horm and Civ painstakingly cut the tree. After an hour -

  Craaaacck

They were able to cut the tree. The four of them enthusiastically cheered for each other. Being able to cut a tree is a significant step for everyone. It means they can take advantage of the wood around them. With the right tools and understanding of the trees. They can bring it down.

“You did great Horm. We’ll rest for a while. We’ll rest first while both of you start chopping the other wood next to it.” Civ instructed the other two. They gladly follow the Chosen One as they are also excited to use it.

Civ was impressed with these two. They were able to replicate what he and Horm were doing earlier. After an hour, they were also able to cut the tree.

They do it for the rest of the afternoon, cutting four 12-inch-thick trees.

“This should be enough for now. We need to test it tomorrow.” While everyone was exhausted, their eyes were still beaming with happiness.

They went back to the camp and brought the trees. Everyone was astonished at what they saw. Even Kivrah.

‘If we can cut these kinds of trees, ’ Kivrah looked around. Many thoughts and ideas run through his mind about the thought that they can cut down the trees.

“Everyone, great job. You can go and rest for today. Come with me Civ.” Kivrah fastened his walk going to the Shaman's hut, and Civ followed his father.

They take a seat in front of the mini campfire in the hut.

“Tell me, Civ, how hard is it to cut down the tree?” Kivrah did not hesitate to go to the point right away.

“To be honest, Father, it was hard, but it is still possible to cut it,”. Civ answered his father while doing some calculations in his mind.

“Alright, I think we need to make the plan you are suggesting. Tomorrow, you can let the hunting team cut trees also.” Kivrah thinks this needs to be done as soon as possible.

“I understand Father. I’ll let my group know. Also, I suggest lessening the distribution of rations for now. We will rely on berries after tomorrow.” With the current supply of dried meat. It will only last until tomorrow. But since hunting is not allowed for the time being. They needed to control the rations and extend them as much as possible. The least is 2 Sun days more.

Kivrah caressed his chin and nodded. He looked at the Shaman also to see her opinion, but he was answered by a slow nod and smile from the Shaman.

“I understand, I’ll inform everyone tomorrow. For now, we need to focus on creating the one you suggest.”

They also discuss other stuff. Such as creating axes and increasing the output of the cordages. Since it will be needed in creating the project.

The meeting ended, and it was already night. They rest for the day. While their tribesmen are still enjoying their time around the campfire. It was a lively night for them. Hearing the laughs and discussion outside the cave, Civ smiled.

‘It is a good thing our tribesmen are having fun and still lively, even with the horde of boars coming.’

The next day. Kivrah woke everyone up earlier than usual. After everyone was fully awake, he relayed to them what was discussed yesterday.

The hunting team will help in cutting down big trees.

Produce more cordages, stone axes, and other tools.

Rations will be lessened now to save and extend the food supply for another two days.

Fortunately, everyone was cooperative. They also agreed and did not make a big deal about it. Their situation right now might not be good, but at least they have enough food.

The whole morning, they focused on their own task. The whole camp was busy.

Looking at the outline of the camp. Civ was aware that they could not produce the number of trees needed to cover the whole camp. They need to rely on the terrain that they have right now.

Civ spends the morning with Horm and his team to gather the necessary wood for the project. Every time the axe broke, there was already an available axe they could use, provided by the knapping team. Even though it was a hard task to do, they were able to gather around 60 pieces of wood with the help of the hunting team.

It was noon. Civ requested to have the team rest for a while while they were checking the woods they had collected. Upon inspection, he was happy with the woods. Most of the woods were 40 - 50 ft tall. Enough to cut into two. With this many, they can cover half of the camp.

Civ's eyes were beaming with motivation. He asked his Father and Horm if they could help him with working on the initial steps of the project. They first cut one of the 50-foot trees in half and removed the branches. Brought it to the northern part of the camp. Since this is where the boars possibly go, it is better to fortify this side. Using a sharpened stick and the skull of a boar, Civ and Horm helped each other by digging a hole. The soil type here in the forest is clay, so Civ is not that worried about digging holes to stick the wood. Once the hole was a foot deep, he let Horm continue to scoop the hole. When the depth of the hole was within arm's length of Horm, Civ let Horm stop the digging. They stick the wood into the hole and put the dirt where there are gaps in the hole.

Doing the finishing touches, Civ was out of nowhere –

  Bang!

  He shoulder-charged the tree.

“Looks stable. This looks good. Let's start putting the other wood.” Still shocked at what Civ did, Kivrah slowly closed his mouth.

“Yes, let's do that. Let me gather the other wood and cut it. While both of you start digging the holes.” Kivrah nodded. He instructed the other tribesmen to help him work on cutting wood and bringing it to Civ. Some also offer to help with digging holes, and Civ happily teaches them how to do it.

The rest of the day passed, finishing half of the empty spaces of the northern part of the camp.

Looking at the structure, Civ takes a deep breath. Kivrah, who was next to Civ, breaks the silence.

“Seeing it now Son, I understand it better. With this tall boars cannot attack us, even the strongest one.” Kivrah smiles and crosses his hands while observing the structure.

“So Son, what do we need to call this?” Kivrah was eager to let his Son name it.

“This Father, we will call it Wall.” Civ revealed to his Father.

He plans to name it in another term, but making it simple makes it easier to remember.

“It sounds easy to remember Son.” Kivrah nodded while he touched his chin.

Kivrah was already tired, so he decided to rest for the day and left Civ.

Civ inspects the wall they are working on. Even if they are able to gather 50 more trees around 50 feet tall, it is still not enough.

“With boars coming soon. I need to make this work tomorrow.” Civ walks back to the cave, thinking of the plans for tomorrow.

The next day, everyone woke up before the sun rose. Kivrah and Civ briefed each team what are their goals for today. As for the cordage group, Civ tasked half of the firewood team. Aside from gathering the wood, gather more palm leaves. After the briefing, every group worked on its task with serious intentions. Civ, Horm, and half of the firewood team helped with installing the wall. While Kivrah and Arsh helped the firewood team gather more wood.

Civ looked at the terrain, and he decided - ‘We need to use these big trees around the area.’

The smaller trees are fewer in their camp. Because bigger trees dominated the area. His original plan is to make a big ellipse around the camp. But with the required number of woods and lack of time, they need to adapt to the situation.

The structure will not be an ellipse. However, they can maximize the coverage of the tree, which will be a big help. What they needed to do was to fortify the areas where the wooden walls are placed.

The morning passed, and the team was able to cover half of the camp. Civ did not expect the efficiency of the team. But sadly, they are already out of wood.

“We need to go back to the forest and gather more wood,” Civ informed the team, and they gladly agreed.

When everyone looked at the 10-foot-tall wall, there was a sense of safety and astonishment.

The Shaman looked at the wall and couldn’t help but praise the Sun Goddess.

“Thank you, Sun Goddess, for blessing us with the Chosen One.”

Kivrah cannot help but be amazed and appreciate what his Son created. “I cannot believe we humans can build these kinds of things. Praise the Sun Goddess.”

From a stone knife, hunting boars, and right now, this almost complete wall will keep them alive. Not to survive but to thrive.

“The wall is starting to show right now, my Son.” Kivrah stands next to Civ, who is calculating the locations where they will need to use big trees for the wall.

“Yes, Father. I hope tomorrow we can finish most of it.” Civ was also satisfied with how the wall looks. But they needed to add more things to make it durable and shockproof.

For Civ, this is already enough if they expect that all of the boars will be coming from the north. He makes sure that there are no gaps through which these angry boars can go.

Civ continues his discussion with his Father. They brainstorm on how to defend against the attack from boars, but suddenly.

Someone from the firewood team ran towards Civ and Kivrah.

The little kid was trying to compose a sentence while gasping for air and said, “They are here!”
