Chapter 23 - Impending disaster

Staring at the three jars he created, he picked up the first jar he molded. Doing the same process, he let it preheat beside the campfire. After an hour, he placed it directly in the fire and started putting more wood.

When Civ started to get busy on the jar, the whole camp was called to gather in the middle of the camp. Civ was also called to the meeting. Before he left the campfire, he put enough firewood to last for two hours. In case the meeting takes longer, he will excuse himself to stoke the fire.

When the people start to gather, the atmosphere is not lively. For the tribe, there are two reasons why the camp usually gathers. First is an impending danger they needed to avoid around the camp. The second is the sighting of the Giants. If there are giant traces or sightings around the area, they need to move quickly to another location. Most of the time, the hardest part of living in the tribe is. Because they can’t leave a camp if they can’t find a safe area. It will be a long debate. At the end, sometimes there are no other options other than to have the giants chase them away. Even if it is dangerous, it will also give them a benefit. Animals around the area will also be chased away by the giant's presence. Cruel. But they do not have other choice but to face the reality that they will lose some of their tribemen.

When Tribe leader Kivrah arrived with the Shaman, everyone was already gathered.

Kivrah straightened his posture and took a deep breath.

“My fellow tribesmen. Thank you for hearing my request. Recently, our lives have been much better. We have enough food for everyone, and we are more active when the Sun Goddess is awake. With that, I want to thank everyone for contributing to the tribe. “

“It's our duty to help one another, Tribe leader.” The crowd replied with their right hand placed in their heart, and then they bowed slightly.

Kivrah nodded at the answer of his tribesmen.

”Based on what you all heard last night's story from my Son, there are sightings of multiple male boars in the north. ” Everyone nodded in acknowledgment.

“As the Trible leader, I want everyone to stop going north. Instead, I want everyone to start learning everything that Civ taught all of you.”

“We obey the Tribe leader.” Everyone said in unison.

Everyone has the same sentiment to not leave the tribe for now. Since it's the mating season for the boars, they need to be more careful now that they are near the sounders.

For the next couple of days, they need to be more vigilant in their surroundings.

They are also afraid that these boars will suddenly attack the camp without any warning. A preparation will need to be done.

“My fellow tribesmen, I would like to hear from you all. What can we do to protect our camp?”

This question resounded through the entire camp. Then the camp went silent. Not because they cannot say anything, but everyone is actually contemplating.

Someone raised his head from thinking.“Tribe leader, what if we have someone look for boars in the north? If they are near, they will run back to the camp to tell everyone what is happening, and we can leave the camp early.”

“A good suggestion, but where are we going to go after?” The Tribe leader introduced him to the existing issue.

“Uhm.” The guy did not respond and started thinking about a solution again.

With the impending danger, leaving the camp will not be the best option. A horde is coming, and they do not know which side of the camp these boars will appear on if they go to the camp.

Civ, on the other hand, he observed. He noticed that his tribesmen brainstorm for solutions. This gives him a new impression of his tribe.

‘It appears that whoever transferred me to this world gave me a good tribe to work with.’

He smiled and continued to observe the tribe.

The suggestions started pouring in again. But some are ridiculous ideas, like pretending to sleep if the boars attack. There are some reasonable ideas also, like fighting the boar head-on. This is suggested by Ras from the hunting team.

The suggestion was praised by the tribe. However, Kivrah argued that it may be possible. But if the boar horde is many compared to them, it will be a huge task to kill them. Civ also agreed, they can create as many spears and stone knives as they can. But when chaos and panic start to reign in everyone’s minds. It will be the death of this tribe.

A teenager caught the attention of the tribe leader. He asked, “Tribe leader, what if we can find a way to keep the boar from us?”

“Like?” Kivrah looked at the boy with full attention.

“Uhm like li-like.” The boy's eyes wandered around. His eyes are locked on the pile of firewood Horm gathered.

“Like that one.” He pointed to the pile of firewood.

“If we can place as much as that firewood around the camp. I’m sure they cannot come near us.” The crowd nodded in agreement.

If we can gather as much firewood as they can, it will be a great option to have to deter the boars.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Civ noticed the boy was with the stone knapping team. So he asked Arsh next to him.

  “What is his name?”

“Him? His name is Vel. He is one of the best spear and stone knife makers in the group.”

Arsh rarely comments on other people. Getting high praise from Arsh sets Civ’s attention on this boy. Civ nodded and continued to observe the discussion.

Kivrah replied to Vel. “I agree, but I do not think we can gather as much firewood right now. We can’t go north to collect the woods there.”

There was hope, but the ability to gather as much firewood as they can will be a daunting task. They cannot risk everyone’s life just for firewood.

Now no one can answer the Trible leader.

‘Everyone went silent, and this discussion became a big obstacle.’

  Civ sighed, but something clicked.

‘Obstacle?’ Civ shakes his head and smirks at himself for being naive. He was too focused on the discussion. This issue should be finished in a matter of time.

“Tribe leader, can I suggest something?”

All of them turned their head to the Chosen One. They gaze fixedly at where Civ is, awaiting what he is planning to say.

“Go ahead Civ.” Kivrah is also looking forward.

Civ went in front of the crowd, next to Kivrah.

“I agree with Vel. The best way we can avoid the attack from the boars is to keep them away from us.”

Civ pauses for a moment to see the reaction of the crowd. He sees that everyone agrees and in the same page as him.

“Piling up firewood or anything around the area is a great idea. These things are brittle, so there is still a chance that the boars will run over these piles.”

Vel nodded slowly while Civ was explaining it.

“What can I suggest is”. Civ crouches down and picks up a two-ruler-length stick. He snapped it into 24 equal pieces.

Then he stabbed it to the ground, standing. Creating a circle in the process.

“This tribe leader is what I can suggest. What if we can get bigger woods and stab them into the ground?”

Kivrah and everyone looked at the structure Civ made. Kivrah silently stared at it. His eyes widened.

“That’s it. This is a good suggestion.” Getting the praise, Civ confidently stared at his Father.

“But, based on the structure you showed. Will this need bigger woods? How will we get that?” Kivrah understands the structure his Son gave, but the materials for making it, how can they get them?

Civ teasingly smiled, “We need to cut trees!”

The crowd gasped. Everyone has their own opinion. But cutting the trees is one of the things they all agreed not to do. First is they cannot do it. Second is they are afraid of the giant's wrath.

“My Son, do not be rash. If the giants notice that we cut trees, they will be furious and attack us.” Kivrah reminded Civ.

“Please do not be overwhelmed Tribe leader. We only need the smaller trees. I believe if we cut the smaller one, the giants will not notice it.”

Kivrah agrees with Civ's plan. If they can make sure not to remove most of the area, the giants might not notice it.

‘It is worth a try to cut it. Cut it?’ Kivrah missed something.

“You say to cut the tree right Civ?” Kivrah wants to make sure he heard it right.

  “Yes.”

“Then how can we cut it?” Kivrah asks the question everyone wants to know.

Everyone felt that gathering that big of wood was something they could only dream of doing. But cutting a tree? It was not an idea that they would think of because it's impossible. But it's for them only.

“Horm, come here.” Civ called Horm. Horm stands up while holding something. Horm gives it to Civ.

“Father, this is what I call a stone Axe.” Civ revealed it to the crowd.

“Oh, it was called a stone axe. I saw Horm break some smaller trees with that.” One from the firewood team commented. Since firewood was scarce recently, they spread out their coverage to gather firewood. The team has rarely talked in the past days..

“Let me show you how to use this.” Civ grabbed a three-inch thick piece of firewood that Horm gave.

The spear and the stone knife we created were meant for hunting and slicing things. With Axe-”

He placed the log horizontally and then-

  Chop!

The log was cut in half!

  “The axe is for cutting.”

  Kivrah's eyes lit up!

‘If we can cut wood this thick using an axe-’ Kivrah intently looked at the axe Civ is holding.

“Civ, do you think we can cut a bigger tree with that tool?”

“With this condition, it is impossible. We can create a wider axe to make it possible.” Civ suggest.

Kivrah nodded. “I see, we will need the stone knapping group to learn how to use it. For the firewood team, I want you to start checking for trees that we can cut. Not too small and not too big for the giants to notice.”

“Yes, Tribe leader,” every team replied in unison.

Having a solid initial plan for the incoming boar horde. Each group starts to fulfill its duties.

Civ, together with Arsh and the stone knapping team, gathered in front of the campfire. He started teaching the team how to make the stone axe. Starting from shaping the stone axe head, up to making the handle by burning to make a hole for the axe head.

Even though the team was amazed, they were more focused on learning this process. When Civ finished the demonstration, he let Arsh guide the team on how to make it.

Looking at the stone knapping team's serious faces, he sighed heavily. He was expecting that the atmosphere in the camp would be more lively now that there was enough food. But since there is a horde of boars that might attack them anytime. They are now afraid and trying to do everything they can to make everyone safe.

‘Troubles after troubles.’ Civ shakes both of his hands to relax.

“Do not worry about it,” Kivrah told Civ as he approached his son.

“This might be a bad sign for us. But this is also a good sign.” Kivrah held his son's shoulder and smiled at him.

“Because you saw it before, more boars appeared. We can prepare for this disaster,”.

Kivrah assures Civ, since he noticed earlier that his son was gloomy after leaving the team.

Civ also just realized, now that they know that there is an incoming horde of boars. It is better to focus on what they can do to protect the camp.

‘Fear can cloud your judgment.’ Civ just smiled as he was almost fooled by that trap.

“Thank you Father.” Gaining confidence, Kivrah was glad.

After Civ finished making the stone axe as a demonstration. Arsh was also following along. She was also able to create a stone axe.

Having two axes, Civ thinks this is more than enough to test.

  ”Time to be a lumberjack!”
