After the slime encounter, Sylvia went back to the commission center to grab another commission. The previous commission was a breeze for Sylvia, which resulted in her wanting to grab a harder commission.
“Heyo I’m back! I’m here to exchange this commission and grab another one~ Can you give me a harder commission though?” said Sylvia to the receptionist.
“Gdly!”
After that short interaction, Sylvia waited for a few minutes. She’s extremely excited to see what new opportunities will come before her. Not long after, the receptionist came back.
“Have you heard about dungeons?”
“Dungeons?” asked Sylvia curiously, this is the first time she has heard of the word dungeon.
“Basically, it’s like a small room located underground that has a bunch of puzzles and monsters. Harder dungeons usually contain multiple levels and more complex puzzles. Dungeons usually have a reward at the end which could help you on your journey. If you’re up for the challenge, I can give you this commission!” the receptionist expined with great excitement.
“Hmmm, it does get boring hunting monsters and waiting for them to come out. Yep I’ll take my chances!”
The receptionist handed Sylvia the dungeon commission. Sylvia said her goodbyes to the receptionist and then started walking to the dungeon’s location.
Dungeons huh? It’s weird that I’ve never heard of that term before. My st commission proved to be rather boring, so I’m really hoping that this next commission has something to demonstrate. My first commission was fun and interesting, but the second one… Let’s just forget about that one, onwards onto my 3rd commission!
While Sylvia was walking, she noticed how different the scenery was when compared to her usual forest walks. Instead of the usual greenery filled with forests and grass, this scenery was more akin to a pins environment. Rivers flowed through the pins for what seemed like miles, while mountains were painting the scenery with a much needed depth. Sylvia’s sights were filled with admiration that she hadn’t even noticed that she had already arrived at the dungeon.
“So this is what a dungeon looks like, not sure what I was expecting but I didn’t expect for it to look like an entrance to a cave. If I take a peek down there I should see—” Sylvia proceeded to take a small peek down the cave-like dungeon, “—stairs apparently. It’s extremely dark though, so might as well construct a small fireball to light the area up.”
Sylvia channeled her memoria in order to cast a fireball spell the size of a tennis ball, enough to light the stairway and held it above her palms. She proceeded to start going down the stairs one step at a time.
“It’s eerie, could there be ghosts? I’ve only heard of ghosts in folktales and stories to scare children away, but do they actually exist?”
Not sure how to feel, Sylvia kept going down the stairs. Not long after, the steps stopped and a long hallway met Sylvia’s sights.
“...I can’t say for sure, but I sense something amiss down here. Something… undead?”Sylvia kept on walking down the hallway slowly. The room down the corridor is within her sights.
“...did I walk past a room? I could’ve sworn I saw a small room when I was walking.”
Sylvia traced back and looked to the left, her assumption was correct! There was indeed a small room blocked off by walls that most people would’ve missed if they ran.
“Sweet! Okay time to blow a wall through this.”
Sylvia channeled in more memoria, flowing it through her fireball spell big enough to make an explosion and released it to where the walls were. After the impact, a small explosion was formed and the once blocked off room was now visible to the naked eye.
“Is that a treasure chest? There could be piles upon piles of gold coins, or or there could be a powerful staff that I can use to make my spells stronger, or there could be a tome filled with even more memoria spells that I can use on my journey!”
As Sylvia stepped in, the path behind her immediately closed.
“Wha–”
Noticing the situation she’s in, she quickly summons in the exact same fireball that she used earlier to light the room up. As soon as the room lights up, she notices skeletons and what looked to be a rotten and decaying human coming over to engage in a fight with Sylvia.
“Are these the undead things I was sensing earlier? They’re so creepy…”
Not letting the fear deter her, she enrges the fireball and casts it towards the nearest skeleton, causing another small explosion.
“...it didn’t work???”
After the smoke settles, Sylvia notices that her fireball did nothing to the skeleton. Terrified of what to do, she immediately casted a barrier to protect her from any oncoming attacks. She uses this time to think of a way to fight back or escape.
“Will my fire daggers work? It’s a fire reted spell, but it IS something reted to a physical object. Just maybe it’ll stick to the undead monsters and then burn them up from the inside.”
Sylvia tried her luck with the fire daggers she used earlier on the boars. She distanced herself from the undead monsters, far enough so that she’ll have enough time to channel the memoria and cast the fire daggers. Due to her inexperience, she’s going to need extra time to cast the fire daggers.
“...and go!”
She threw all 3 of her fire daggers to the nearest undead monsters. To nobody’s surprise, it didn’t do anything to the undead monsters.
“Darn… Wait, maybe I can blow through the door’s entrance?”
Sylvia then dashed through the door while casting another fireball spell, ready to blow the doorway open. After she casted it, no visible damage appears. The outcome is clear, Sylvia’s stuck in a room filled with undead monsters. As soon as she noticed that, she casted her barrier spell again.
“Okay uhhh Sylvia, think think. You need to think about how to get out of this situation and not panic.”
Sylvia thought long and hard while maintaining her barrier spell. Her fire spells are useless against undead enemies, an outcome she hadn’t foreseen. She can’t escape, and blowing the ceiling open will only make her apparent demise faster.
“There’s something that I haven’t tried yet… It’s extremely risky to do, but I’ve got no other options left.”Sylvia waits until nearly all of the undead monsters are near her until they’re all stacked. After they’re all stacked, Sylvia immediately sprinted to the opposite side of the room and started channeling her memoria to construct a physical item. The fire daggers she used before were fmes shaped into a dagger, so she hasn’t tried constructing an actual physical item out of thin air before.
After reaching the opposite side of the room, she tries her best to think of something reted to a weapon and focus on it, but she just didn’t have the right memoria channeling due to how abstract her concept is. Sylvia notices this, she still tried to force it but unfortunately she had to cut the casting short as the undead monsters were already 5 feet away from her. She threw aside the weapon casting for now and put up her barriers again.
“WAIT! I’ve been so engrossed by my fire spells that I completely forgot I can do light spells, they have to be effective on undead enemies, right?”
“But… I have no idea how to cast offensive light spells.”
Sylvia was left with another gamble, she’ll have to somehow use the light spell that she used on the night before her departure and turn it into something she can use offensively.
“Let’s test the waters out first, I’m gonna go and cast that light spell again but ramp it up.”
Sylvia dashed to the opposite side of the room again to distance herself from the monsters and closed her eyes. She started thinking about a warm memory where she had dinner with her family the day prior to her departure. She held out her hand above, but to her utter surprise, no ball of light was formed.
“...why is the light not appearing? OH WAIT I COMPLETELY FORGOT—”
She was so used to her fire spells that didn’t need any incantations nor drawing that she completely forgot that she needed to draw a sun first to activate her light spell. She proceeded to draw a sun and held out her hand again and not long after, a small ball of light started forming.
“Phew, that could’ve been bad. Now it’s time to strengthen this ball of light and make it brighter!”She channeled in more memoria towards the ball of light which not only made it bigger, but also made it extremely bright. The undead monsters who were previously walking towards Sylvia stopped mid-track.
“Gotcha, so undead monsters are weak to light reted spells. This is as far as I can go though, if I channel in more memoria I’d be permanently blind.”
“What if I threw this?”
Sylvia came up with a wild idea. She was thinking of throwing the ball of light towards the undead monsters to see what would happen, would the ball of light break or would the monsters disintegrate due to the intensity?
“I’ve got no other choice then.” Sylvia started warming her right hand up, cracking her shoulder joints in preparation for the throw she was about to do.
“Take that—”
The ball of light was set free from Sylvia’s grasp and flew horizontally, hitting the nearest undead monster and disintegrating it. However, that resulted in the ball of light disappearing which caused the monster to start moving towards where Sylvia’s at to attack her.
“Hmmm, okay I got it!”
Sylvia then used the same procedure earlier to form her light spell, but instead of forming it into a ball, she decided to think of the wind sshes that her teacher used when he was teaching Sylvia. She wanted to change the wind part to light. She started to mold the shape of light with her mind, akin to the wind ssh and then drew a sun again. After drawing the sun, she moved her hand horizontally to indicate where the light ssh should travel and then not long after, she opened her eyes and noticed the miracle in front of her.
“WOAH! IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!!”
3 undead monsters were completely chopped in half by the light ssh earlier and 16 enemies remain. Now that she knows what to do, she went on the offensive and started preparing several more light sshes.
“Alright, I’ll admit you were an interesting challenge! Thanks for helping me on my journey~”
After saying a few parting words, she casts many more light sshes towards the enemies. One by one, the enemies were going down. Due to the repetitive casting, she soon realizes that she can use the light sshes without needing to draw it first.
A skeleton was coming over to attack Sylvia from the left, but she quickly casted a light ssh diagonally which was enough to split the skeleton’s body into two. A group of 4 undead monsters were coming from behind her. Sylvia noticed this, she immediately sprinted forward to where the previous skeleton was split in half and started preparing another light ssh. She noticed how stacked the enemies were in front of her, so she decided to put more power into her sshes. Before she could cast the light ssh though, an unexpected obstacle came before her.
“Wait, something’s wro–”
Before she could finish talking, a rge skeleton came from underground, bursting through the ground and broke it. It was as tall as the room she was fighting in and it carried a rge, but rusty looking sword and killed off the rest of the undead monsters. She hadn’t expected for there to be a boss fight in her very first dungeon commission.
“It’s massive… Okay, I need to somehow attack him and get him down.”Sylvia tried thinking about what to do. She couldn’t focus all the way though because the rge skeleton boss was surprisingly fast. It was able to travel across the room in just 5 seconds, which meant that Sylvia had to be nimble and quick on her feet.
“I definitely don’t want to take my chances with using a barrier spell, I’m afraid that it might just break immediately if I decided to use it to block the skeleton’s attacks.”
Sylvia thought about it hard. She noticed how fast the skeleton was, so she tried to do something about that problem.
“Its strength lies with its legs. If that’s gone, I should be able to finish him off!”
Soon enough, Sylvia started channeling in more memoria through her veins and casted another light ssh, then aimed it towards the skeleton’s knee. The spell managed to connect with the skeleton’s knee and a visible scar was visible.
“Okay, the light ssh worked by the looks of it! I just need to cast it a few more times.”
She started to ssh her arm horizontally, making the same hand gesture as before. She unconsciously channeled more power into the sshes which made them stronger. After she casted the sshes, clear wind sounds were heard from the air due to the ssh cutting the air up and proceeded to nd on the skeleton’s knee. The attack was strong enough to disconnect the skeleton from its left knee.
“Woah, okay! I just need to do the same thing to the right knee then!”
Sylvia poured all of her memoria and focus into this next ssh, she hoped that this ssh would be strong enough to cut the right knee up and detach the skeleton again from its right knee, leaving it unable to walk.
“And… GO!”
The ssh sshed through the air once again. The skeleton fell off bance and started to fall headfirst into the ground due to the imbance of weight. Unfortunately for it, the attack that Sylvia casted earlier managed to connect with the head. Loud cracking could be heard as the skeleton was starting to disintegrate from its legs to upper body. The pressure from the ssh was just too much, which caused its skull to split wide open and not long after, the skeleton bursted into a fog of light.
“...huh, I wasn’t expecting that ssh to hit its head. Lucky me I guess!”
Sylvia then walked towards the treasure chest and opened it.
OBTAINED- Tome of the Dead
"Oooooooooooo what does it do? Maybe it can summon undead monsters like earlier? Or maybe it could even summon spirits to attack the foe! Ahhhh I'm gonna go check what this does ter, for now I'm gonna go take a small break, camp again and hunt for some more boars!"
Sylvia then left the room and walked up the stairway, meeting the sun's rays again. She had gotten so used to the dark environment down below that she had completely forgotten how blinding the sun could be. She proceeded to hunt for boars in the evening, preparing for her early dinner.
...
...
"So dizzy... Why do I feel so dizzy... Could it be because of that attack I did earlier..? Whatever the problem is, I'll have to conquer this dungeon first and then get a well-needed rest!"
Sylvia looked up to the sky as the sun was setting, the night was imminent. Although she was dizzy, it felt wrong to her to finish a commission half-heartedly. After her short rest was over, she immediately went back into the dungeon and started walking towards the main room.
