Chapter 44: "Data Mining the Heart"

While Hajime-kun is raging at the screen:

"Stop team-killing me, you fucking asshole!"

Asura replies, "Stop moving into my crosshairs, you shitty noob!"

They remain oblivious to the two ladies who’ve made camp in his subconscious.

Two unlikely allies are now sharing notes on Hajime-kun.

The office lady comments, "What I’ve noticed is that Hajime-kun has a distinct interest in magical girl-themed shows. Not only does he have memorabilia plastered throughout his subconscious, he even has..."

—she gasps and clutches her chest—

"This magazine that popped out straight from his soul: ‘Biggg Mammass Bazonka Weekly.’"

Valiant claps excitedly. "You know what I found!? He’s grumpy on the outside but paradoxically super shy about..."

  —dramatic pause—

  "TADAAA! Look at this!"

From her hands surfaces a piece of dark, buried history:

‘Middle School Chuunibyou Memorandum: How My Crush Reacted!!!’

A grimy book with a red label: “Don’t Ever Open Mom!”

As they gossip over their findings, Hajime-kun and Asura both stop gaming and go quiet.

  Suddenly, Hajime says,

  "Asura... I miss Mom."

Asura sighs, "Yeah, I miss her too. I hope she’s doing well back in our world."

Hajime adds, "I miss Dad as well."

Asura nods, "He was tough on our lazy ass, but... he made us who we are."

  Hajime stares at the screen:

  "I want to go home."

Asura murmurs, "We don’t even know how."

The two continue playing, now cooperatively, without mishaps. The room around them begins to change — pictures of childhood dreams and precious memories appear.

  Memory Sequence:

A tapestry forms, showing a country boy learning to hunt rabbits with his father in graphic detail. A tent, a fire, and the most sacred words a child should hear:

"I would never go out to get milk and cigarettes..."

A tear forms in adult Hajime’s eyes.

Another tapestry: His mother cooking dinner, dual-wielding a sandal and a belt, chasing him around the house, and helping with crappy homework that no sane child would ever do.

Then one more... with a blocked-out face labeled:

  "Childhood Friend... Betrayer XoX."

He doesn’t stare long at that one. He knows the trauma is too deep.

While Hajime is unintentionally doing a life review, the two resident spies frantically take notes.

  Melissa-san:

“Woooow... mother-in-law is so prettyyyy! Wait… someone’s missing. Didn’t the data say he had a sister?”

  Valiant chimes in:

“Adopted sister. Family friend died and… hmm. Weird, the data doesn’t lie, so why isn’t she showing up?”

Just then, a new picture appears:

  “Demonspawn Haruka – Adopted Sister-san”

  The two spies now understand:

She only appears in his teenage years.

  Meanwhile:

  Hajime-kun:

“Asura, you think Haruka’s blowing a gasket over my disappearance?”

  Asura:

“She’s the type to rip through hell to find us. No doubt about it.”

They both shiver at the thought.

More photos play: Haruka at first appears as the epitome of a good sister. As time passes, her face grows more scowling, always grabbing Hajime’s arm and wearing a flower ring, like a warding signal to other girls.

A photo shows her diary, and Hajime’s face twitches in horror.

Next: Hajime is seen packing his bags, writing a note to his parents:

"I’m going to strike it big in the city. Thank you for everything."

  Adulthood Montage:

  Dumpster diving.

  Odd jobs.

  Finally… his first desk job.

“You feel like you're doing something important at first… hoping someone will notice your dedication.”

  They never do.

Office politics. Lazy bosses. They give you the excuses to not promote you— you're competency becomes a threat to middle management.

Hajime’s smile in the annual photo's turns into a grimace… then a sunken stare. His smile starts frowning. Literally...

One night, drunk and broken, he stumbles into a flyer:

  “Magical Nexus Girl Event V – XX/XX/XXXX”

Raging at the world, he says "Screw it!" and attends.

Something changes that changes his life forever.

A Magical Girl Mary-san cosplayer’s, her smile gives him something to feel again.

  He buys the merch.

  He wins a few raffles.

  He binge watches the show.

A void in his heart starts to fill up.

  But then—

The final memory: he’s watching the movie season finale...

A 50-minute ad appears in his way.

He tries to install an adblocker...

…And a pop-up sucks him into another world...

  Back in the subconscious...

  Melissa-san chokes up:

  "That was so sad..."

She stares at a photo of Hajime, lifeless in a cubicle.

  Valiant smiles:

"Excellent. We got what we came for."

She exits the subconscious in a flash not caring at all for Melissa.

  Back in the room:

Hajime walks over to his shrine of figurines.

"Time for my daily prayer to Mary-san!"

  He notices something off…

“Oh? I didn’t have this one in my collection?”

  He squints.

“It looks like a pretty succubus from that old doujin I read...”

Asura: “Doesn't it looks familiar somehow…?”

  Melissa-san, sweating, ditches her hoodie—

revealing her “Heart-Chapped Bra” and thigh-high stockings.

She strikes the pose she’s practiced hundreds of times in the mirror.

  Elsewhere...

  In another world:

“Brother… elusive as you are, you’ll always return to me.”

A witchy sister searches Hajime’s old apartment.

She finds his last browsing history — a shitty Magical Girl show.

"Of course he would like it, its spearheaded by that traitor..."

  A pop-up ad appears:

“Join the Predatoriad Search & Capture Division – We’ll find anyone, anytime, anyplace, just pay 100$.”

She clicks it without a second thought.

  Fate complies to her request.

She’s dragged into the same world as her brother.
