44. Escape – 2/4

Cra was watching the cart, and after a while, she saw what she wanted. A small cart with two wheels, pulled by a horse, with a cover over the back.

Waiting for the right moment, Cra blended into the crowd and pced Isabel inside. Successfully hiding her, Cra left Isabel there and moved closer to the guards.

She didn’t mind waiting in line, and as she was covered with a bnket, she slowly moved forward. When a man and a woman, who looked like they had nothing, passed the knight's inspection, the knight turned his attention to her.

"Take off your hood and state your name," the young knight ordered. Before Cra could answer, he was already preparing to draw his sword.

‘Such a sharp reaction? They must really be on edge from what is happening in the city,’ Cra thought.

As the knight reached for his sword, Cra moved in the blink of an eye. Before he could strike, she drove her hand through his chest, crushing his armor. He exploded like a watermelon.

  "Vampire!"

  "Run!"

Cra swiftly turned to the second knight. As his hand nded on the hilt of his sword, Cra's own hand crushed his before stealing the weapon and slicing him in half.

Blood covered her clothes as she stormed through the city gate, cutting down every soldier in her path. She ran as fast as possible to put distance between herself and the hunters, searching for a pce to hide while waiting for Isabel’s cart to catch up.

Finding shelter from the sun beneath an olive tree, Cra hid more than two kilometres away from the gate she had run through and started watching what would happen next.

For the first time in a long while, Cra was forced to look at the city in daylight. The sight was unpleasant, and the sun was draining her power rapidly. But there was one thing she needed to see, no matter how long it took.

Fortunately, the people in the city were too busy fleeing to stay inside. The fire had spread quickly, and in the middle of summer, there was no way to stop it. The town was slowly turning into a massive inferno.

As she watched, rge groups of citizens continued pouring out of the gates. Among them, Cra spotted the hunters leaving the city as well. They stopped not far from the entrance.

Three horsemen stood together. Cra couldn’t make out their faces, but she could feel that one of them was Lorenzo. The other two were unfamiliar to her. Soon, they each rode off in different directions, none of them heading toward her.

Cra watched until they disappeared. Then, finally, what she had been waiting for also left the city.

The cart carrying Isabel was moving slowly, forcing Cra to wait a long time before it disappeared behind the hills.

The moment it was out of sight, she left the olive tree and moved swiftly across the barren nd to catch up.

It took her only a few minutes to reach the cart. Before she could stop it, the middle-aged man and young girl sitting in the back noticed her.

"God bless you, stranger," the man greeted her. "My name is Pietro, and this is my daughter, Lia. We should hurry. Your friend is injured, and she needs rest, not just to be hidden like cargo. We’re heading back to our vilge, not far from the river."

Pietro spoke slowly, as if choosing his words carefully, despite not knowing who Cra was.

"Do you even know who I am?" Cra asked, trying to figure out how Pietro had known she would come looking for them.

"You left your friend in our cart before we left the city, so we wanted to know why," Pietro said calmly, even though Cra was covered in blood. It was obvious she had escaped the city by killing her fair share of guards and panicked civilians.

"If you want, you and your friend can travel with us to our vilge," Lia added, breaking the tense silence between them.

Cra didn’t know if these two were idiots walking into danger or if they were working with the Church, leading her into a trap.

Both Lia and Pietro were staring at Cra, who had been standing more than ten meters away from the cart just moments ago, yet now, she was suddenly standing right next to Isabel.

"How is Isabel? Did she wake up?" Cra asked as she moved the bnket aside to check on her.

Lia and Pietro didn’t answer. They were still trying to process what had just happened.

"W-Who are you?" Pietro tried to shield Lia from Cra, but as both saw that Cra moved as fast that they though that she crossed the distance between each other in the blink of an eyes they knew.

  "Who am I?"

Cra looked at them, and as her red eyes and pate face was exposed to them, they knew who Cra was in an instant. They knew that she was existence of disaster, but looking directly in her face, they didn’t say anything.

"My name is Cra. I am a doctor from Florence. Were about to leave the city, when the fire started, and on our way out of the city, Isabel got hurt."

Cra was not sure if they will gonna believe her or not, but Lia looked like she will gonna cry and Pietro was also happy in his own way.
