Chapter 3: A Wolfs Plight

I know what this is going to come down to. It's going to come down to who's bloodlust is the strongest.

Despite all the advancements we've made in animal society when push comes to shove our bodies are still governed by our instincts.

And most animals have two of those - fight or flight. But for us werewolves it's different. For us it's fight or submit. And once you submit to another wolf that's the end of it, there's no breaking that relationship - you're subservient forever.

That's why it's important I come out of this on top.

"So uh, hey Woof you ever been in a fight before?"

"That depends on what you consider a fight, Fluffles."

The cat raised its paws, and punched the air.

"You know, fisticuffs. Being the all star detective you are I'm sure you've been in at least a few fights give or take."

"It's our job to solve the case Fluffles not to make the arrest which means most of the time I never even see the suspect."

"Oh." Fluffles said disappointed "EH! THEN WHAT ARE WE DOING NOW!?"

"This wolf is a detective, and on top of that we don't have as much evidence as I'd like to make an arrest. So we're gonna go meet the pup face to face, and see if we can get a confession."

"Yeah, like that's gonna happen. You also gonna ask him out to dinner and a movie?"

  "If that's what it takes."

"Why did I bother asking that question." Fluffles sighed.

"I know you're hungry Fluffles, but you need to keep your weird fantasies to yourself."

"THAT'S NOT- ugh, so who is this wolf anyway, and how are you so sure he's a detective?"

It was true. Ravenwoof was able to deduce that the attacker had in fact been a wolf, but that didn't necessarily mean they were also a detective. He only knew that the wolf was a detective because in the vision that's what Winnie had called the wolf shortly before dying. Knowing that he couldn't adequately answer Fluffel's question.

"For now let's just call it a hunch.

Fluffles sighed disapprovingly. "Man I hate that trope."

Fluffel's looked up at Ravenwoof as if noticing something.

"Hey by the way we've been out for awhile. If you're out when the sun comes up won't you-"

"We got about an hour left - should be enough time to close this case."

"If you say so partner. If you say so."

As the moon descended the two detectives found themselves just outside a large stone mansion. It was a ways away from the city, and looked to be about three stories tall.

"Woah this guy is loaded." Fluffels said. "Uh, what are we gonna do without a warrant?"

  Ravenwoof laughed.

"Fluffels please, warrants are just a formality. Every cop knows that."

  "YEAH EVERY BAD ONE!"

"Anyways Fluffels you stay here. I'll go get our pup - knowing how we are he could probably swallow you in one bite."

  'Like he did Winnie'

"HA! So you do care about me! I feel so safe now." Fluffels said hugging himself.

  "Don't get it twisted molerat."

"Molerat? That's a new one. "Fluffels said.

"If you died that'd be my third partner that bit the bullet. It'd look bad for me ya know that's all."

  "Y-you're third?"

Fluffel's stopped what he was doing, and looked up at Ravenwoof with sad concerned eyes. Ravenwoof simply stared straight ahead. He lit a cigar, and walked up to the front door while Fluffel watched hidden in the distance.

After knocking a few times Ravenwoof took a deep breath. The cigar calmed him, or at least he thought it did.

After a few moments the door opened up. What Ravenwoof saw was a tall, and distinguished werewolf. He was a whole foot taller than Ravenwoof at 8 feet, and his body was huge, and could fit at least three fully grown adult male humans inside of his chest alone.

Ravenwoof could feel the hair on his neck stand up. A part of him wanted to apologize, bow his head. He wanted to be told what to do, and how to act and what to say. He knew that he would not win in a fight if it came down to it. Ravenwoof was a mere pup compared to the giant before him

  "Ah, Ravenwoof right?"

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

His voice was rough, and grated as if it had been processed through a thousand filters. It was as if darkness itself had a voice, and spoke only of obedience, and servitude.

Despite that Ravenwoof did all he could to resist that temptation.

Ravenwoof raised his head, and looked straight into the Wolf's eyes.

Kane Nine, ranked number 19 on The Lupus Institutes Greatest Running Detectives list. He used to be higher. He used to be in the Top 10, but on more than one occasion he ended up killing the suspect, even when the evidence pointed at another culprit. The court of owls ruled the attacks as accidents, and kicked him all the way down to number 19.

  "T-That's right." Ravenwoof said.

"I saw what you did with the Rat Attack King on the news the other day. You have potential pup. Breaking into the top 20 at your age ain't no easy feat."

"I didn't come here to talk about cases that have long been solved Kane. I'm here to talk about one that's open."

"Ohhh, are you now? Do you need my advice, pup? Is that it?"

"No Kane." Ravenwoof replied. "I need your confession."

Kane didn't have anything to say to that. He just stared at Ravenwoof in disbelief.

"We found Winnie's teeth Kane, and on top of that we followed your scent from the scene of the crime all the way here. I get it, you were sloppy because you knew Winnie didn't have a family. You knew no one would care if he went missing. But you didn't account for me Kane; you didn't expect another Ranked Detective to take the case, and I don't blame you for that mistake, but a mistake is still a mistake, and that mistake is going to put you behind-"

  Wham!

I couldn't breath. One moment I was up, and the next I was down on the ground coughing up air, saliva, and blood. My paws hit the pavement. I slowly looked up, and saw Kane towering over me flexing his fist. I slowly started to get up sitting on one knee, but before I could get too comfortable I felt whiplash as my entire body went spiraling into a nearby bush crashing into the fence behind it. Kane had kicked my head in, and one of my fangs had fallen out.

Again before I could react I felt Kane pulling me up by my hair, and dragging me across the lawn with one hand. My vision grew blurry as I looked forward, and saw the gate to his mansion. He was well hidden, but just passed the gate across the street I saw Fluffels staring back at me.

'D-Don't do anything stupid' was what I was trying to communicate with my eyes. 'Cats have good eyes' I thought. hopefully he could see that.

Before I knew it Kane had dragged me into his mansion, and slammed the door behind him.

With his single hand he threw me across the room, my back slamming into a picture frame, glass piercing my fur, and then my skin.

"You really are stupid aren't you?" Kane said.

"Yeah, I get that a lot." I said coughing again. I reached my claws out desperately searching for the closest thing I could find.

  'I need something, anything.'

I didn't know what it was, but it felt heavy in my hand. I held it firmly, and as Kane approached I threw it with all my might. The glass lamp cracked against his chest, and exploded sending shards everywhere. He briefly raised his arm to shield himself, It didn't seem to deter him, but that moment of distraction was what I needed

I got up, and dashed into the next room which seemed to be the kitchen.

"The moment you run away is the moment you become my bitch, pup." Kane said.

In a twisted way he was right. When faced with other wolves werewolves had two options, and two options only. Fight, or submit. Running away is the same as submitting, you'd only get so far before turning around and dragging your feet back to your new master.

"Ravenwoof huh? I'll send you back to the agency with your tail between your legs. You're gonna tell em you resign. You're gonna tell em you work for me now."

Seeing no need to rush Kane walked into the next room taking his time. As soon as I saw him walk through the doors I began to throw butcher knives out of his kitchen drawer straight toward his body. One gashed into his arm, and another into his shoulder, but as for the rest he waved his ginormous claws out in front of him batting the knives away as if they were softballs the force sending sparks out into the kitchen.

One of the knives he deflected toward me so hard it caught me in the shoulder pinning me to the refrigerator. Once in front of me he slammed his fist into the knife sending it deeper into my shoulder cutting through muscle, and bone.

  "RAAAAAAAAAAGHHHH"

'I can't keep letting him get close.'

He moved my head to the side, and opened the freezer door, and forced my head inside, and proceeded to slam the door on my neck as if he was trying to decapitate me with it alone. The cold of the freezer made everything feel so much worse.

"You know Winnie wasn't the only one right?"

  My ears were ringing.

"There's just somethin' about it. The way their screams change with each and every bite. I like to leave the head for last most of the time, but Winnie had to go all at once. If you want what's left of em you might as well start searching the sewers."

With all the force in my body I pulled the knife out of my shoulder, and swished backwards as fast as I could slashing at Kane as I did.

  I missed.

I threw the knife at him again which he deflected, and then I grabbed a toaster from the counter, and threw that as well to no end before booking it into the next room.

Not deeming Ravenwoof a threat Kane once again took his time getting to the next room. It was the dining room, and just passed that was a sliding glass door that lead to the backyard.

Kane entered the dining room, and saw Ravenwoof on the other side of the table with his back against the curtains.

"Why don't you join me pup?" Kane asked. "Let me think for you so you don't have to worry about how messed up the world is. You ain't gotta play dress up for these cowards, and weaklings anymore."

Ravenwoof slowly started to back into the curtains.

"The world would be a much better place if we all got along Kane. Why did you have to do this? You already know how much the other animals dislike us."

"That's never gonna change pup. If I had it my way the other animals would be serving us not the other way around. Are you really happy being a slave to their system? To their rules?"

"No, I'm not Kane. But this isn't the answer."

"Oh, but it will be pup. I'll make it your answer!"

Kane leapt over the table ready to deal the final blow to Ravenwoof, but just before the claws could reach him Ravenwoof pulled back the curtain, and hid just under it. The sun began to shine brightly through the screen door illuminating Kane completely.

"Nooooooooo!" Kane yelled as smoke began to radiate from his body. His fur started to fall off, and his tall stature started to shrink down, and down until finally his true form was known. Kane had become human, and because his human biology had been exposed Kane began to melt into the wood his body turning to a giant pile of green goo.

And as if on queue the Collierville police force busted through the doors, and found what was left of Kane.

The following night Ravenwoof met Fluffle's back at the office.

"Hey what happened! After we caught the guy you never showed your face!"

"Caught huh? Man you have a strange way with words." Ravenwoof said.

After the incident he debriefed the chief on what happened, and was carefully escorted to a nearby hospital where his wounds were treated.

"And you look SUPER messed up. You sure you should be working today?"

"Ravenwoof doesn't take days off piglet, you'd do well to remember that."

"Ok but why not?" Fluffel was looking up at me with calm gentle eyes.

"Because there's still work to be done Fluffels. Because there's still work to be done."
