Chapter 0 : The Legacy of the Spell Knights

The Legacy of the Spell Knights

Three thousand years before the current age, when magic first bled into the fabric of the Continent, chaos reigned supreme. Monsters, born of Conjunctions and twisted fusions of arcane energy, plagued the lands. Early humans, elves, and dwarves found themselves unprepared for the onslaught. Amid this crucible of fire and blood, an ancient order arose to confront the growing darkness: the Spell Knights.

The Spell Knights were not ordinary warriors, nor were they merely sorcerers. They were a union of both, forged through rigorous training, alchemical experimentation, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Unlike the Witchers, whose methods were focused on mutagenic enhancement, the Spell Knights relied on the delicate balance of physical prowess, elemental magic, and mastery of the natural sciences. Their legacy would shape the Continent for millennia, though few remember them today.

  The Founding of the Order

The origins of the Spell Knights trace back to a single individual: Ardan Valorath, a scholar-warrior who witnessed the horrors wrought by unbound magic. A former elf who had studied under human alchemists and dwarven forgemasters, Valorath believed that only through unity of knowledge and strength could the rising tide of monstrosities be stemmed.

He founded the Order of the Spell Knights, a disciplined brotherhood bound by codes of virtue, generosity, and intelligence. Members swore oaths not just to protect the innocent but to embody ideals of selflessness and wisdom. Valorath forged their first Runeblade, a weapon of unparalleled craftsmanship, imbued with enchantments to channel elemental magic. It was the prototype of the long swords that would become the Spell Knights’ signature.

The weapons were crafted from a rare ore known as Aetherium, found only in the deepest mines of Mahakam. Aetherium could channel magic without cracking or degrading—a feat no other metal could replicate. These blades became both their weapon and their focus for casting devastating spells, binding the warrior and mage into one.

The Four Ranks of the Order

The Spell Knights were not a monolithic organization; they were divided into four distinct ranks, each representing both skill and responsibility:

The Bronze Steel Knights: The initiates and apprentices of the order. These knights were taught the basics of swordplay, runic magic, and alchemy. While not yet formidable on their own, they served as the backbone of the Order, providing support in battles and honing their skills.

The Silver Steel Knights: Fully fledged warriors and mages who formed the bulk of the fighting force. Silver Steel Knights specialized in hunting lesser monsters and assisting local communities. They often acted as the mediators between the Spell Knights and the rest of the Continent’s inhabitants.

The Golden Steel Knights: These were the paragons of the Order, masters of both combat and magic. A single Golden Steel Knight was said to have the strength and cunning to face entire armies, their Runeblades glowing with the power of imbued runes. They were responsible for leading campaigns against the greatest threats to the Continent, including monstrous abominations and even incursions of the Wild Hunt.

The Golden Ebony Knights: The rarest and most revered rank. These knights were both warriors and scholars, keepers of the Order’s most ancient knowledge. Their wisdom was unmatched, and they wielded spells that could reshape the very landscape. Legends say that the Golden Ebony Knights were the ones who first learned to seal portals to other realms, making them the greatest enemies of the Wild Hunt.

  Enemies of the Wild Hunt

The Spell Knights were the bane of the Wild Hunt, spectral raiders who sought to enslave mortals and wreak havoc across dimensions. A single Golden Steel Knight, wielding both martial skill and elemental fury, was said to be able to vanquish a thousand of the Hunt's wraithlike soldiers. The Spell Knights developed powerful runes specifically to counteract the magic of the Aen Elle, the elves who commanded the Wild Hunt.

Their greatest triumph came during the Battle of the Nine Veils, where Valorath himself led a host of Golden Ebony and Golden Steel Knights against a massive invasion. With spells that fractured the skies and blades that sang through the air, they forced the Wild Hunt to retreat. However, the victory came at a great cost, as many of the Order’s finest perished.

  The Fall of the Order

Despite their strength and virtue, the Spell Knights were not immune to the treachery of mortals. As they rose in power and renown, kings and nobles grew envious and afraid. Whispers spread that the knights’ alchemical practices were heretical, that their magic was dangerous, and that their power threatened the sovereignty of human rulers.

At the height of their strength, the Spell Knights faced betrayal. Entire chapters were massacred in their sleep by armies sent by fearful kings. Libraries of ancient knowledge were burned, and their sacred forges were dismantled. Those who survived went into hiding, scattering across the Continent.

Over time, their legacy faded into myth, their name spoken only in hushed tones or forgotten altogether. The Continent moved on, its new guardians—Witchers, sorcerers, and other adventurers—taking up the mantle of monster hunting, though none with the nobility and grandeur of the Spell Knights.

  The Lost Order

Though the Spell Knights are no more, their relics endure. Hidden caches of Runeblades, ancient tomes of alchemy, and forgotten strongholds remain scattered across the Continent, waiting to be discovered. Some say their descendants live on, unaware of their lineage, while others believe that the Order merely sleeps, waiting for a time when the world will need them again.

And in the whispers of the wind, through the ruins of ancient keeps, one might still hear the echoes of their creed:

"In steel, we stand. In wisdom, we guide. In magic, we triumph."
