61. Healers!

I look back to see a golden-haired human-ish woman with matching golden eyes and dressed in a full set of knights armor, complete with a symbol of a sword and shield etched onto the side. I say human-ish because what separates her from a normal human is her features that are too beautiful and perfect to be human. It’s really almost creepy how flawless she is, unsettling even.

I put my sword in front of me in a standard guard expecting some sort of attack. Luckily for me though, she just stands there and looks at me confused.

“Haha! No need to worry friend, I intend you no harm! Should I be lying, may the Order’s hand rain down hell upon me.” She says while holding her hand to her heart.

I stare at her for a few moments before reluctantly deciding to trust her, for now that is.

“You’re an ally of the Order?” I ask just to make sure as I slowly lower my guard.

“Indeed. I come from the town of Meddleburrow just thirty minutes east of here.” She says reassuringly.

I narrow my eyes, eventually deciding to put my full trust in her and sheath my sword.

“I see, would you be willing to take me there? As you can see, I’m in need of medical treatment. These damn bolts in my leg and shoulder don’t exactly feel the greatest.” I ask her.

She nods before focusing intently on something. In the coming moments, a golden circle appears in the middle of the clearing. It forms slowly at first, before growing ever larger with each passing second, until it’s about the size of myself.

Then, the circle begins to slowly change, until the inside of the circle is what seems to be some sort of medical bay.

She gestures me to go through, which I oblige, though somewhat hesitantly. The feeling of passing through is strange, almost like I just spun myself in circles for five minutes and tried to stand up. The feeling passes quickly though, and eventually I’m able to stand on my own.

I find myself, as I expected, in a medical wind inside a fort or a castle of some kind, with large brick walls and soldiers similar to the lady who brought me here, similar in that they are all unnaturally perfect looking.

Soon, the blonde lady, also passes through, though she seems to be more used to that mode of transportation as she remains unbothered by the crippling vertigo that I felt.

The portal closes quickly behind her, and as soon as it does, she whistles loudly. In the next few seconds, a comparatively normal looking man dressed in a type of lab coat sporting dull brown hair appears in front of us.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“What’s up Selaria- woah! Damn Chaos scout got you good eh? What color was he?” The man says as he begins to dig through his bag for a few moments.

“What… color? Uhm, red?” I answer confused.

“Oh good, then you should be fine after a day of rest. Come over here and sit down real quick.” He says while gesturing towards a bed on the side of the room.

“Okay? What would the color of him have to do with anything? And what’s a Chaos scout anyway? Matter of fact, what the hell is the Order?” I say to the woman who brought me here, who I’ve learned is named Selaria.

  She looks at me confused.

“I thought you already knew? Where have you been these last few years? Don’t you know about the Endless War?” She replies.

“Nope, I’m somewhat of a hermit, so I haven’t been around much. You mind explaining?”

She thinks about it for a second before nodding.

“Woah, hold on there. This is all going to have to wait. First I got to take this bolt out of you. Or bolts, I should say. This is gonna hurt a bit so try not to scream to loud.” He says before ripping the bolt stuck in my shoulder and my thigh out at once, before quickly removing the two less deep ones also stuck in my leg.

I manage to stifle my scream, but only barely. This shit really hurts, unsurprisingly. As soon as all the bolts are gone from my body, he lathers some sort of cream on all of my wounds and then begin to close his eyes with both of his hands pointed towards me.

In a few seconds, a gentle cooling sensation pervades throughout my body. I watch in wonder as the wounds rapidly begin to close, similar to that potion that Bretta had given me before. What makes this different is that fact that there was almost no alchemy involved I this process, beside the salve that he placed on my wounds.

Healers are incredibly rare in the multiverse for various reasons, the main one being that simply no one wants to be one.

Healers are the number one target of any warring superpowers, the idea being that the more healers you can take out, the more soldiers you can take down without the risk of them surviving.

Also, healers are almost always made to work to the bone, with most active healers being lucky to receive any sleep at all most nights. It’s such a common issue that a lot of healer classes even have skills and traits to help stay awake for as long as possible.

It doesn’t help that ninety percent of healers are almost instantly sent to active battlefields as soon as possible. While you may think that a healer could just not sign up with a superpower, most if not all superpowers in the modern day have some sort of law that requires it.

That’s why when most people receive a healer class as an option, they are usually inclined to not take them.

The reason that some still do though, with all those downsides in mind, is that the incentives are sometimes just too good to pass up, with superpowers paying quite literally in planets to some healers.

One may wonder why not just use potions instead, and indeed a lot of places do try and do that, but it’s not sustainable at all. Potions are a huge investment and while for short term battles or skirmishes are good, for the long-term, it’s almost always better to get a healer.

Think about it, one potion can heal one person, but one healer can heal hundreds of thousands of people, sometimes even millions in their lifetime. So overtime a healer pays itself off tenfold.

All that to say I’m amazed at the work of an actual healer.

I’m broken from my thinking by Selaria.

“Uhm, is he okay? He’s been staring at nothing for a whole minute…” She asks the healer.

“What? Oh, yeah I’m fine, just thinking about something. Anyway, you gonna answer my questions now?” I ask.

  She sighs before replying,

  “Ask away.”
