The Divine

The Void—a cold, unrelenting place. A sea of nothing, a plane where no living thing dares to call home. Yet, there are beings that claim the Void as their domain. Beings of unimaginable power, beyond mortal comprehension. Beings that have ascended from the mortal coil to the divine plane. Old god's, born of the divine plane, hold supreme power there. Yet mortals have discovered ways to grasp fragments of the divine.

For a time, the divine planes existed in balance. But over time, a sunder formed between the natural-born god's and the ascended god's.

War is no stranger to the god's. It has been waged over almost everything. Physical objects and material wealth hold little importance to most god's. However, some ascended god's, corrupted by greed, fight over such possessions. Most god's, however, seek power—a claim to a sliver of the divine plane where they may reign supreme. Others fight for sport, to hone their skills and create rivals that challenge their strength.

After the sunder, their conflicts turned toward the mortal plane. But they quickly realized they could not directly influence the mortal realm. After countless years, they discovered an alternative: they could enlist mortals to fight their battles.

The god's found a way to interact with the mortal plane. A few deities worked together to pierce the aether, the barrier between planes. Through this breach, they could bestow their blessings upon mortals. When the god's discovered this method, chaos erupted. They scrambled to grant divine blessings to chosen mortals, igniting the Divine Revolution.

Mortals, intoxicated by the prospect of divine favor, began worshiping god's in hopes of receiving their blessings. Churches and religions rose and fell across the ages. Those who received blessings were bound to fight for the god's that had empowered them. Crusades and mortal wars were waged in the god's' names.

These blessed individuals soon earned a new title: Divine Champions, or simply champions. The more they fought for their god's, the stronger they became. Yet, this system came at a cost. Bestowing blessings required the god's to relinquish fragments of their divinity. When a champion fell in battle, the blessing would attempt to return to its source—but often, the divine energy became lost in the aether, never to return.

Many god's perished, ignorant of the consequences of their actions. As god's fell like mortals, the most powerful among them realized a grim truth: to maintain their power over the divine plane, they needed their champions to eliminate all others. And so, the sunder deepened.

Dana, an ascended god and the Goddess of Consumption, feeds on the life force of other beings—mortals and god's alike. At the height of her power, mortals revered her. They lived for her, sacrificed for her, and built their lives around her worship.

But as time marched on, Dana's name was forgotten—erased from history books and mortal memory. Even among the god's, her existence faded into obscurity.

Yet, her one and only champion still remains.
