Chapter 2: [Awakening]
50 Years Later
In a large grazing field miles away from the nearest village a young lamb only starting to close in on a year old woke up alongside many other members of his herd. After a slight stretch he nibbled on the nearest grass to fill his empty stomach. His eyes had the slightest look at the other sheep on the corners of them.
The young lamb had a completely empty look on his face upon completion, his stomach was filled, yet he was filled with dissatisfaction. Yet he had no idea why. He had as much of an idea as his memories of most previous days, which was nothing. Like all the other lambs in the pasture his brain was incapable of true complexity.
He gazed on watching the other lambs play without any mirth, not even considering going out to play with them. Which is how it had always been, as soon as he no longer needed it to survive he separated himself from his parents and tried to be a loner. Himself not even knowing why he was determined to do that. All it took was the slightest sense he could be independent.
The rest of that day predictably went as any other day would go for a sheep, grazing, pooping, eating and more sleeping until night fell. The lamb heard the human talking a few times, but couldn’t understand a word said, or even the concept of words. It blended with the barking he sometimes heard the dog do.
During the night time he initially intended to go to sleep yet something compelled him to stay awake this time, sometime during that night he heard some other footsteps heading away. Half asleep he found himself wandering away a few sluggish steps at a time following the sound. Being alone for the first time brought him a sense of ease he hadn’t felt before. It wasn’t long until he found the nearby woods.
He got the sense he shouldn’t enter this place, he’d seen the dog drag back sheep several times who got near it, or wandered away in general. It was a miracle him himself had wandered this far without being noticed. But that was only a faded memory he could barely recall, he proceeded to take some more wobbly steps into the woods in pursuit of the noise he heard.
When he got these he saw plants he had never smelt or felt before, he got the slightest sense of excitement from all the new things. He took a moment to frolic around in the shaded grass before any joy felt fell to a lower level. It was then his short neck turned a corner around a tree, a stench catching his nose.
When he looked at the source a blood trail caught his attention, a tiny smile started to creep up the lambs mouth unconsciously. He then followed it, to see a purple deer being mauled by a wolf. Clearly already dead.

The lamb's brain told him to baa or run away, yet he couldn’t look away. It wasn’t out of fear, but instead admiration. He was viewing someone far stronger then he was, at the moment in the back of his slightly developed mind he felt he’d rather be a completely different species.
His curiosity had now been sated and he was going to leave back to the herd, everything he saw here likely to become just another foggy memory he’d forget. He had enough self preservation to not be seen. It was then something sharp scraped his hoof.
He tried to keep his voice out, but a small baa came out, the wolf nearby quickly turned to the lamb. The lamb might have cursed if he knew what that was, for now he stood still in mild fear. He may have been scared of dying, but it’s not like he had anything to live for or achieve anyways.
At the last second he decided to try to headbutt the wolf to do at least something in his final moments, he dealt 1 HP of damage and bounced off. As the grey bloodied wolf the lamb stared forward bravely accepting his fate
It was then a loud “bark!” came from a distance. The herd dog had come over here! The dog quickly stood between the lamb. The lamb himself quickly regained composure and walked behind a bush as the two candids had a standoff.
The herd dog loudly barked to get the wolf away, the wolf looked onwards intently. It was clear to the lamb there was going to be a fight, he hoped there was going to be a fight. But as the seconds went on nothing happened, the herd dog and wolf seemed to be at equal level with each other. That was until the wolf lunged.
The lamb watched in excitement as the dog skillfully sidestepped and bit until the wolf’s leg, swatting at the snout with his paw causing the wolf to howl. The wolf attempted to return the bite only for a quick motion from the dog hide to swat them into a tree before biting for the neck.
The wolf managed to kick the dog away before speedily scurrying off injured badly, the wounds looked like they might cause a lot of blood loss.
The dog came over to the lamb with a stern look of annoyance, the lamb didn’t care that much as he was dragged off to where he was supposed to be this night.
In his mind the lamb was having thoughts and feelings surface that he had never had before. This was the most he had ever thought before. He felt like he didn’t belong here, that his previous feelings were of complete boredom and he wanted to know what meat tasted like. He wished he could be more like the herd dog who had just saved his life. All of those thoughts were incoherent and messy in a barely developed brain, yet they were becoming stronger.
When he arrived back at the pasture everyone else was sleeping and the lamb tried to fall asleep again now with a lot on his mind.
It was then an image flashed before the corner of his eyes, he felt like he had seen this image many times before but this was the first time he was fully conscious of it. It was fading fast, the lamb did not want to lose sight of whatever it was he focused as hard as he could on the image in his head until it finally became clear.
