Chapter 77: Country of origin

Jack flinched as the Gods seemed to try and pull down the very sky. Power exploded from them in great waves, buffeting his senses. He covered his head reflexively and closed his eyes, waiting for some kind of dramatic impact. Nothing happened. When he opened his eyes and looked at the Gods, they had returned to their normal, upright positions.

The human God examined Jack, "Are you alright? Why did you cower like that?"

"I...thought you were pulling Drowl all the way here or something." as he said it, Jack felt ridiculous. They had implied something like that, but surely he was mistaken. However, the Gods managed to surprise him again.

"We did. The world you came from is on its way here right now." The human God smiled lightly, their tone easygoing despite the insanity of the words.

Jack stood there, stunned. "But- I don't- that's not-" His brain started and stopped several times as he tried to comprehend what was happening.

The human God just smiled lightly. "We decided that this was the best course of action. By bringing your world to Earth, not only can we regain the lost power and souls stolen from us, but we can continue to monitor the world in case a lack of Deific intervention brings about any other issues."

The other three Gods disappeared, leaving Jack alone with the human God. "As a representative from your world, I believe we will need to prepare the Earth for the arrival of a new planet. I will bring you to various world governments, and you will convince them not to fire nuclear missiles at the giant rock now hurtling through space toward Earth."

Jack stared in horror at the shifting being before him. Nuclear devastation? World leaders? It was...well it was actually a bit similar to his experiences on Drowl now that he considered it. Meeting with monarchs and organized attempts at the destruction of him and his companions was something he actually had experience with. There was a part of him, surprisingly small in his mind now, that still thought of Earth leaders as powerful, dangerous people. But when compared to the proactive, magic-wielding assassins that made up some of the royalty he had met on Drowl, he found that he wasn't that afraid.

Jack found it rather easy to gather his resolve. "Okay. Let's do this. How long do we have?"

"Around a month." Jack stared at the human God, unbelieving. "Though we only have a few weeks before they likely notice the approaching planet. The timing will be rather tight, and they will feel a lot of pressure to act quickly, which could cause a rash decision."

Jack found himself growing frustrated with the answer. "Why did you make it happen so fast? We could've had more time to deal with this?"

The human God looked at him, an eyebrow that changed shape, size, and color with each moment raised in amusement. "Well, it doesn't really matter to me. As long as the planet gets close enough we can recover the power and souls. We can also fix your reincarnation problem before the planet gets destroyed outright. The fact that we are giving you an opportunity at all seems more than generous to me."

Jack felt sick. He should have known. These Gods were like Deis after all, arrogant bullies who did whatever they wanted. But if they were giving him a chance, he would take it. "Fine, we've got no time to waste. Let's get started."

It became readily apparent that having a God's full might applied to a problem made that problem go away very quickly. The human God could apparently travel to the location of any human on the planet instantaneously, appearing there as someone everyone recognized and allowed to be there. It was a cheat-like power that made Jack wonder what the other Gods could do.

Discussions with various world leaders were...varied in result. Some seemed ready to accept his statement, that the approaching hunk of space rock was actually an inhabited world, and that it would soon be placed into orbit. His own seemingly magical appearance behind locked doors and in secure spaces, along with his robotic body that was impossible by modern technological standards seemed to be enough to convince various powers of alien influence.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Other world leaders tried to kidnap or experiment on him, which Jack was able to escape from with surprising skill thanks to the system's influence. He was forced to make repeated visits to these people with the help of the human God, though it proved to be ineffectual. Even soliciting the world leaders Jack had already convinced did very little to persuade the nations that thought of his appearance as a trick or a trap.

After two weeks of steady work, nearly 70% of the nations of the world were at the very least, vocally in support of Jack and the world of Drowl. Lacking other options, Jack decided to take drastic action...appearing on international television. The human God helped Jack appear on dozens of live global news networks in rapid succession, a feat that would normally be impossible for a single person to commit. On these programs he demonstrated his systemancy, using the [Point Defense] skill or having Alpha float around him. He explained the situation to the people of the world, citing himself as irrefutable proof that people from other worlds existed.

He followed this up with appearances at scientific conventions, robotics labs, and large social gatherings to appeal to people directly. The human God seemed very amused to inform him that he had been trending on social media nonstop and that many memes, conspiracy theories, and religious groups had been formed around him. However, all of that work served as the final push to tip most of the other nations over the edge into begrudging trust. All except one...his home country of the United States of America. No matter what he tried or what he did, he was met with promises of nuclear attack if the planet got close enough to the planet.

Other nations threatened violence against the United States, which only led to more political shouting and chaos. There was even an assassination attempt on the president, prevented in part by Jack himself after being warned by the human God. This only led to speculation that Jack was setting the whole thing up and trying to garner favor. It made Jack laugh to consider that saving a person's life actually made the person in question trust him less.

The discovery that Drowl was indeed approaching Earth at a rapid pace took the world by storm. Jack had already the people of Earth as best as he could, but even still it was another thing entirely to see irrefutable proof that a rock the size of a small planet was hurtling toward Earth. Jack had to revisit multiple world leaders as they grew more and more nervous, doing everything he could to reassure them. He badgered the human God until he was finally given details of what signs to look for to confirm Drowl slowing to a stop. Jack provided those details as quickly as he could, but it seemed like he wouldn't be able to convince the U.S. not to interfere.

On the second to last day, when Drowl was well within the solar system and still approaching Earth rapidly, nuclear missiles were fired at the inverse planet. Jack was informed of the very moment the decision was carried out, and he begged the human God to intervene. The deity just shook their head, claiming unwillingness to interfere in humans' decisions. Jack no longer wielded godly powers, which meant there was very little he could do to interfere with the situation. Alpha had different ideas.

The system bug stayed with Jack while he was trying to convince the world to act peacefully. Occasionally, the beast God and the dead God would appear and observe Alpha, or talk to it. Jack was often too distracted to really absorb what was happening there, but it seemed as though Alpha was doing what it could to help Jack by integrating itself with the other Gods. So when the missiles were launched, Alpha quickly demanded that Jack use his now level ten [System Buff] skill on Alpha. After Jack compiled, Alpha called for the beast God, who appeared, then took Alpha into its jaws and bounded away faster than Jack could blink.

Jack could only stand there, confused and nervous until the human God gave an update. Alpha had been taken into space by the beast God after pledging himself and his kin to the beast God's service. Then the system bug had used a heavily buffed defense screen to block the offending missiles and blow them up prematurely. Nuclear explosions resounded high above the Earth, hitting nothing but empty space. The other nations of the world acted swiftly, proving to be deadly serious about threats of embargo, restrictions, and declarations of a potential war on the United States for committing such an action. However, it was the citizens that made the largest difference, storming the capital and inciting a civil rebellion, protesting the actions of their own government. Within a day, foreign peacekeepers had arrived and disarmed the United States' ability to use nuclear weapons.

Jack felt himself collapse to the floor in relief at the news. The threat of a second attack had been very real, and Alpha had gone missing since the blast. The human God believed the butterfly to be alive, but its whereabouts were unknown.

At long last, with only a day to spare, he had done it. Dorwl would soon arrive safely, and the work could finally begin again.
