Chapter 49 – [Insect Ability Activation]

After ordering Shava to watch over the ant rvae while they ate the slime, System took the rva with a digestive ability to an empty chamber. He immediately wrapped it up with his tentacles and began performing an examination.

Perhaps because the rva wasn't at all mature, when System used his tentacles to inspect it, the special effects that had appeared when he'd examined Shava didn't repeat.

The ant rvae always felt like they were returning to their mother's body when they were with System, so it would be very strange if this rva had any weird emotional fluctuations.

A few minutes ter, System found out that the rva was level 4 and had an upper of limit was 14—the same as Shava's. It seemed like the level caps of these bck and brown ants should all be the same.

System also detected the gender of the ant, which was female.

As System continued to test and analyze, he once again sensed the [Insect Adaptability] in the rva's bloodline and the Special Talent the rva possessed that was simir to [Molting and Growth].

By comparing the information he'd learned from the female ant rva and Shava, he discovered that the ability ants possessed that was simir to [Molting and Growth] was actually the [Pupation] talent.

The [Pupation] talent was stronger than [Molting and Growth], and a creature's life level after pupating would also be higher.

Ant rvae, like caterpilrs, kept eating during their rval stage. When their bodies grew to a certain extent, they condensed into pupae. Eventually, they would break out of their pupae's shell and become new life forms.

System recalled that before his first metamorphosis, his forelegs had been torn off by an ant. However, during his metamorphosis, his forelegs had both been restored to their original state.

In the same way that his metamorphosis could regrow his missing limbs, the pupation of ants could repair damage to their bodies.

Since [Molting and Growth] allowed System to undergo a third metamorphosis, [Pupation] would definitely allow Shava to undergo at least a second pupation, and she'd have a new body when she broke out of her pupa.

Shava's level had already reached 10, and System estimated that she was very close to meeting the conditions for her second pupation.

Rather than letting Shava acquire the [Limb Regeneration] ability, perhaps it would be easier to use [Ability Enhancement] to improve her [Pupation] talent and allow her to pupate a second time as soon as possible.

Plus, after Shava pupated a second time, her strength would undoubtedly undergo a significant improvement, which would make her an even more capable assistant.

  ...

After thinking briefly, System returned to his attempts to investigate the female rva's strong digestion ability.

After more than ten minutes, he successfully detected the rva's ability, [Ultrafast Digestion] (4-7/11-15). He could still only measure the approximate level range of the ability, so it wasn't very accurate.

System specuted that this [Ultrafast Digestion] ability should be one that every female ant had.

When a female ant became a queen ant, it must ensure that it consumed and digested a rge amount of food in a short period of time. Otherwise, its body wouldn't be strong enough or have enough energy to y rge quantities of eggs, and it would be impossible for the queen to breed hundreds of thousands of ants.

By analyzing the female rva's skill and comparing it to the information in his own [Insect Adaptability], System found that a grasshopper's body wasn't very well suited for [Ultrafast Digestion]. However, his [Insect Adaptability] had reached level 13, and his bloodline had been further improved during his third metamorphosis, so he should be able to master this [Ultrafast Digestion] ability anyway.

In the end, all insects, whether grasshoppers, ants, butterflies, or dragonflies, shared the same ancestors.

While there appeared to be all sorts of strangeness in the world of insects, there really weren't that many differences in the essence of their bloodline. It's just that some characteristics were visible on the surface, while others were hidden deep within the bloodline and would only appear under very unusual circumstances.

Insects were weak, but they had still managed to survive to this day. Their bodies may not be strong, but there were thousands of different abilities hidden in their bloodline.

Back when System had gained his first levels, he'd relied on [Insect Adaptability] to successively obtain the abilities [Dark Vision] and [Acid Resistance]. In fact, these abilities had both been inherited from his grasshopper bloodline.

He sensed the unique details of his own body's [Insect Adaptability], then compared and explored his bloodline to find something simir to the ability that he'd detected inside the female rva. Once he found it, he used [Ability Enhancement] to consume his experience and began trying to activate the [Ultrafast Digestion]-like ability contained within his own bloodline.

By eating and digesting the slime, System's experience bar had increased from 3% to 5%, so he still had a little experience to work with. As his experience was consumed, System started to feel an itchiness in his blood.

This itchy feeling gradually spread to his stomach, which soon started wriggling. System could feel that his digestion of the slime in his stomach was getting faster.

His stomach grew itchier and itchier. When his experience bar dropped from 5% to 3%, the strong itchy feeling suddenly turned into a stinging pain, and his stomach began to wriggle even more violently.

This feeling was simir to the changes that had occurred previously when he'd eaten a lot of slime and his [Corrosive Mucus] had improved.

Ding! You acquired the Derived Skill [Ultrafast Digestion]!

Ding! Your [Data Compition] talent's level has upgraded!

Ding! You gained the Derived Skill [Insect Ability Activation]!

  ...

His experience bar's consumption continued. The moment System's experience finally bottomed out, the pain in his stomach reached its peak. At that moment, he finally successfully activated his body's digestive ability—[Ultrafast Digestion] (1/11).

On top of that, System, in a moment of enlightenment, found that his understanding of the talent [Data Compition] was deepening. His [Data Compition] (3/5) upgraded to [Data Compition] (4/5).

At the same time, he gained a new ability, [Insect Ability Activation] (3/5).

  ...

[Ultrafast Digestion] (1/11): A Derived Skill obtained from [Insect Adaptability] and [Insect Ability Activation]. The speed of food digestion is greatly increased.

[Insect Ability Activation] (3/5): A unique Derived Skill created by System using [Data Compition]. By consuming his experience, System can activate an ability contained within his or the target's [Insect Adaptability]. System's unique Derived Skill.

  ...

After obtaining [Ultrafast Digestion], System found that his digestion speed had improved by at least 50%, and this was only the first level! If the level of [Ultrafast Digestion] increased, his digestion speed would definitely be further accelerated.

The newly acquired [Insect Ability Activation] improved System's understanding of insect traits and gave him a deeper understanding of the various activatable abilities contained in [Insect Adaptability].

Each insect had several abilities that were most suitable for them, such as [Smelly Mucus] and [Limb Regeneration] for grasshoppers, [Formic Acid] and [Enhanced Sense of Smell] for ants, and [Insect Instinct] and [Camoufge] for mantises.

At the same time, each insect also had some abilities that weren't suitable for them. Even if such abilities were obtained, the upper limit of its level would be very low, rendering it useless.

For example, some species of caterpilrs had the [Underwater Breathing] ability, but they couldn't find food underwater. Unless they somehow fell into water, they would go their entire lives without ever using the ability.

And it wasn't just that. There were also deeper limitations hidden within [Insect Adaptability]—ability conflicts.

No insect could possibly possess every ability contained within [Insect Adaptability]. For example, if an insect had [Solid Carapace], it couldn't also have [Soft Skin], and if it had [Giant Body], it wouldn't have [Agile Physique].

Not only did the abilities in an insect's bloodline have these sorts of ability conflicts, there were also many unexpected limitations.

For example, there was a certain conflict between [Fire Resistance] and [Color Camoufge] in System's body. If one ability increased in level, it would be difficult to continue improving the other.

The degree of conflict between these two abilities wasn't very high, but some abilities were simply born on opposing sides. As long as one was obtained, the other couldn't be activated at all.

So, although System had the means to activate a tremendous variety of abilities, he must first consider carefully before making any decisions.
