Chapter 1: Who Am I?

  ♂?,,

  Light...

  White light...

One after another, white light beams flashed in front of me like lightning, hitting a black and gloomy curtain wall. The light beams seemed to be tangible, and when they hit the curtain wall, they made a loud "rumbling" sound, then turned into tiny fragments and dissipated into nothingness.

That black curtain wall was made of unknown material, although the white light came with great momentum, but the curtain wall did not move at all, standing still as before.

Although the white light was repeatedly defeated, it did not give up. It persistently struck the black curtain, and after an unknown amount of time and billions of collisions, it finally pierced a tiny hole in the center of the curtain, allowing a small bundle of extremely weak white light to pass through.

  "Ah..."

  He woke up.

Opened her eyes to look around, this was a quiet little forest, leaves fell all over the ground, as if covered with a thick layer of carpet, occasionally golden sunset glow seeped through the leaves, printing patchy light spots on the carpet.

He sat on the soft dry leaves, his back leaning against a giant tree with a trunk as thick as a bowl, and he didn't know how long he had been in this position. His head and body were already covered with many leaves, almost burying him.

A caterpillar fell from the leaves covering his head and landed on the exposed skin of his hand, the cool and slippery feeling made him suddenly startled, completely waking up.

He was a young man, perhaps it would be more appropriate to say that he was a boy, around sixteen or seventeen years old, with slender and spirited eyes, high nose bridge, red lips and white teeth, and a clear and handsome appearance, only his figure was too thin and pale, with a somewhat malnourished look.

His eyes were very bright, like two black gems inlaid on his face, as if there was a special magic that made people fall deeply into them at first sight.

He brushed off the fallen leaves from his body with both hands and got up from the ground, his deep blue sportswear was worn out and full of holes everywhere, and his sports shoes were almost worn to the soles, apparently he had walked a lot.

"Who am I? Where... is this?" A pleasant male voice came out of a parched throat, it was hard to imagine that such a good-sounding voice came from the mouth of this frail boy, only the tone of the voice was slightly stiff and not fluent, as if he hadn't spoken for a long time.

These two questions are obviously not something a normal person can ask, the boy's eyebrows slightly furrowed, he patted his head with his hand and shook it again, the boy's eyebrows furrowed even tighter, without a doubt, all memories before he woke up had been lost.

"Warning! Warning! Hunger level has reached 99.9%! In ten minutes, life will decrease by 1% every minute!" A pleasant female voice echoed in his mind, and at the same time, a wave of hunger pangs swept over him like a tidal wave.

The boy couldn't afford to think about other problems, and immediately took action. Every minute his life value decreased by 1%, which means that if he didn't find food within 110 minutes, he would starve to death.

The boy's eyes searched around, looking for food, but there was really too little to fill his hunger in this small forest. He easily found a few things like mushrooms under the roots of a big tree, and just as he was about to put them in his mouth, he was informed by that pleasant female voice that they were poisonous and could not be eaten.

Ten minutes passed quickly, the boy gained nothing, his life value began to decrease, which made the boy more anxious and started running involuntarily, but the more he did so, the slimmer the chance of finding food became.

An hour later, the boy unknowingly ran out of the small woods and onto an asphalt road. The sun had already set at this point, but it was not yet dark. There were occasional vehicles passing by on the road, possibly because this place was in the suburbs, and most of the passing vehicles were tractors or small trucks used for farming.

After checking his health, he only had 35% left. The boy suddenly felt dizzy and lightheaded, his feet floating, and all his strength was slowly draining from his body. He couldn't even walk, let alone run. He stumbled a few steps, tripped over a brick, and fell headfirst, rolling twice before landing sprawled out in the middle of the road.

A truck came from a distance, the screeching sound of brakes rose, and the truck stopped barely one centimeter in front of the boy's body.

"You don't want to live anymore?! Don't come looking for me if you're seeking death!" A rough, loud voice came from the driver's cabin, and the door opened. A middle-aged man with a dark complexion, wearing a tank top and shorts, jumped out of the car.

At the same time, on the other side of the co-pilot's seat, a 16- or 17-year-old girl jumped out. The girl had a melon-seed-shaped face with slightly dark skin. Judging from her appearance, there was some resemblance to the middle-aged man between her eyebrows and eyes, but the lines on her face were much softer and more beautiful.

It was early summer, the girl's dress was very cool, wearing a white short-sleeved T-shirt on top and a light green shorts on the bottom, a pair of Nike travel shoes, her plump and sturdy thighs were exposed outside, full of youthful vitality.

"Dad! Go and see if anyone is crushed!" The girl's face was full of anxiety, with a layer of fine sweat beads faintly visible on her high forehead, apparently frightened.

A middle-aged man cursed as he walked, but he had already arrived at the boy's side. He bent down and helped the boy up, letting him lean against his own chest while checking on the boy's condition.

"Eat... eat..." The boy hadn't been run over by the car, but after being pinched several times on the philtrum by a middle-aged man, he slowly came to, muttering "eat" repeatedly.

"Hey, looks like this kid has fainted from hunger. Little Lin, go see if there's anything to eat around here?" The middle-aged man let out a big sigh of relief, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders since he hadn't trampled anyone.

The girl immediately ran back to the driver's room, turned out half a bag of bread left over from lunch, took a look, and there were still seven or eight pieces left. She grabbed the plastic bag containing the bread and hurriedly ran back.

The girl sat down beside a middle-aged man and took out a piece of bread, tore it in half and handed it to the boy's mouth.

"Bread, edible. Each serving of 100g reduces hunger by 10%, and continuously restores 5% health within five minutes." The female voice in my head spoke again.

The boy seemed to have smelled the food, opened his eyes, opened his mouth and took a big bite of bread, swallowing it down without chewing in his mouth for a few times.

The girl was almost bitten by the boy's hand, and she was startled. At the same time, she saw the boy's awkward eating posture and burst out laughing, saying softly, "Eat slowly, there is plenty of bread, no one will fight with you for it."

With the girl's hand, after eating half a loaf of bread, the boy seemed to have improved a lot, sat up from the middle-aged man's arms, and the girl surnamed him to put the plastic bag containing bread into his hands, letting him take it himself.

The boy was starving, and the bread was wolfed down in big chunks. In less than two minutes, the plastic bag of bread had been emptied by him.

The girl and middle-aged man stared blankly, how many days hadn't this person eaten? Could it be that he was a starving refugee who had run out of the mountains?

"Nothing... nothing left." The boy held an empty plastic bag and looked at the father-daughter pair in front of him with embarrassment.

The girl took the plastic bag and only then noticed the boy's appearance, her heart skipped a beat for no reason, thinking to herself that although this boy was a bit thin, he looked quite good-looking, at least better than the boys in her own class.

The melancholy eyes of the boy, again made the girl's heart ache. Where did he come from? Where is he going? Why did he faint on the road? The girl had too many questions in her mind, but couldn't ask them.

Her eyes moved from the boy's face to his body, and the girl felt a pang in her heart. What era is this now? Even beggars dress better than him, right? Looking at him, he seemed to have walked a lot of roads and eaten a lot of bitterness, all for what?

The boy ate the bread and then drank nearly half a vat of cool tea from the middle-aged man's large teapot. After resting for a while, his body finally recovered, his complexion improved greatly, and the prompt tone in his mind made him even more delighted. Not only did his hunger and thirst drop to 0, but his health also recovered to 65%, and was still rising continuously.

His body regained its vitality and he got his strength back, the boy sprang up from the ground with a sudden burst of energy.

Seeing the boy recover so quickly, both the middle-aged man and the girl were extremely surprised. Generally, people who have starved for a long time don't have such a good appetite, and they need to take good care of their intestines and stomachs. But this boy was just like nothing had happened, without any trace of his previous weakness, which was simply unbelievable.

"Hey kid, what's your name? Where do you live?" The middle-aged man asked the boy in front of him.

The girl stood beside him, her two big eyes also full of curiosity. This big boy seemed to have fallen from the sky, exuding an air of mystery all over his body.

"Who am I? Where is my home?" The boy's eyes were filled with confusion and puzzlement, he kept repeating the question, asking himself, but the more he thought about it, the less answers he had, until finally, he even started pulling his own hair out and pounding his head with his fists.

The middle-aged man and the girl quickly stepped forward to hold down the boy, exchanging a glance with each other, understanding the meaning in each other's eyes. Without a doubt, this boy had lost his memory.

Although I have never encountered such amnesia in real life, it is often performed on TV! Haven't eaten pork and haven't seen a pig run?

"Dad, what should we do?" After the boy's emotions stabilized, the girl pulled the middle-aged man aside and whispered to discuss.

"Xiao Lin, what do you want Dad to do? Once this matter gets sticky, it's like wet hands touching dry flour, can't shake it off. I think we'd better not get involved in other people's business and just drive away." The middle-aged man took out a crumpled pack of 'Red Double Happiness' from his pocket, pulled out a cigarette, lit it up and started smoking.

"Ah, Dad!" The girl looked at the middle-aged man with a scolding gaze and said, "It's almost dark now. Leaving him alone here is so dangerous! There are no streetlights around, and he's in this state... what if he really gets hit by a car?"

"This, Xiao Lin, I understand what you mean, but we are not related to him, if we bring him back home, he doesn't even know where his own home is. Are we supposed to let him stay at our place forever? I'm always out running errands, and there's only your mom at home, this isn't convenient either!" The middle-aged man took a deep drag on his cigarette, looking troubled.

The girl looked at the boy squatting on the ground with his head in his hands, and her heart was filled with pity. She pulled on the middle-aged man's shirt and said, "Dad, let's take him home first, we have plenty of rooms, let him stay for a few days. If we really can't find out where he lives, then we'll send him to the police station and let them help. It's better than leaving him here!"

Unable to withstand his daughter's persistent requests, the middle-aged man thought for a moment before finally agreeing.
