"The Adventurers Guild was founded three thousand years ago by some of the worlds best Demon hunters who were not particularly happy with how the Church of Light was conducting their holy war. They were aware of the Demons running rampant and destroying every day folks lives while the church was trying to hold the front lines. These Demon Hunters came up with a solution to their backyard problem, create a service that rewards the everyday man and woman for contributing towards defeating Demonic creatures near their own homes. The sense of loyalty to a community one was raised up in is always going to be greater then a loyalty to a war most never see. This Philosophy caused the Adventurers Guild to quickly become the largest non-church affiliated and impartial mercenary group ever created, with their reach spanning all three known continents. Some of the services they provide are missions or quests to their members in which they can better their community through resource gathering, protection details, and defeating known threats in the area. Because of the simplified structure of their ranking system, we now have an international standard for threat assessment or as the Guild likes to call it, a 'Difficulty Rating'." - History and Impressions of the Adventurers Guild by Scribe Oriel Janis
I decided to grab a few different books about the different guilds around the city and how they were formed, hoping to understand my choices a bit better. So far the Adventurers Guild is more or less what I thought it would be, a systemized way for mercenaries to take odd jobs here and there to pay the bills. Most members are also members of other guilds or run their own business as well. A member gets certain privilege's when moving up their tier of strength such as decreased taxes on monster part selling, waved inter-guild teleportation fees, and a guaranteed seat at certain Auction houses for starters. Either way because of how impartial the Adventurers Guild is in politics, almost anyone who can be a member is one. It would not hurt to become a member once I am done learning about the world some more. With my mind made up I continue my studies and grab my next book titled 'Skills, how hard can they be?' - By Skillmaster Derek.
"Skills are the backbone of our society, from farming to fighting skills play an important role in every facet of our lives. Why do we have skills however? Well the obvious answer is because the Great System was created in order for us to help fend off the Demonic hordes of the Dark Gods. But what do skills do for the common man? What applications can we see in our everyday life and how hard is it really to get some of the skills we need? In this book you will find comprehensive breakdowns of commonly listed skills and some exercises to potentially gain them..." This seems like a how to guide for dummies. A lot of the stuff is pretty self explanatory but it all boils down to three things in order to acquire a skill. A purpose, skills are only created when the person who is trying for a skill has a purpose for making one and wanting to improve that aspect. That is why I have yet to get a walking or breathing skill, just because I am doing it does not mean I am doing it with purpose. But if I start trying to improve how I walk or how I breathe, that can help trigger the system to give me the skill or create one if it does not exist yet. The second thing is persistence, in order for the system to reward you trying to improve yourself sometimes that requires you to be persistent with what you are trying to achieve. Here the system is looking for resolve. The third is of course talent. Some people will have an easier time getting a skill then others simply because of their talent. Talent can also cut back on the time it takes to train to get a skill so in essence a man who has no talent takes a month to get a sword skill while a man who has talent and all other factors are the same would get the sword skill in a week? Maybe less depending on the talent? So it seems like Heros might be special since while we do have talents, we also have blessings which might help lower our necessary talent needed. Or maybe we have high talent in everything? Oh well there are a few skills here that are easy enough to get and seem very practical that I should practice getting them when I leave here.
Standing up I go to put my books on the return cart when I come across an aisle labeled 'Professions'. Curiosity striking me I return my read books before perusing the aisles and looking for anything remotely interesting. Here they label any and all kind of profession someone could take as well as the skills to accompany them. It seems there are your standard ones, blacksmithing, tailoring, alchemy, enchanting but as I get farther back in the shelves I start to see some unusual ones such as Arborist, Accountant, and something called a Inscriptionist? Something felt like it was tugging at me when I went past the book so without thinking I grabbed it and went to sit down.
Opening the book led me to a synopsis of what an Inscriptionist is. "A user who inscribe ancient words of power onto objects." Curiosity peaked I continue to read.
"An Inscriptionist utilizes what are known as words of power which essentially is just the ancient language of the Ancestors or the ones who are to be believed as the ancient race that all non-reptilian enlightened races come from. It is said that this race developed highly advanced technology that even some of our best scholars of today are just now really beginning to understand how they function. An Inscriptionist takes what little bit of language we have deciphered and applies their meaning of the word onto objects to imbue them with the concepts of power the word holds. This profession is highly sought after not only because of the difficulty of learning a word is but also the amount of different professions one has to learn prior to being offered the coveted Inscriptionist skill. For example say a budding Inscriptionist named Zern has learned their first symbol which stands for 'fire'. Now the concepts a 'fire' symbol can mean in the ancient language is vast and it is the Inscriptionists' job to focus on what application of that symbol they want to use. For now Zern is focusing on building a sword that can use the word 'fire' so first Zern needs a sword. Well, he can either buy an already made sword and apply his inscription there but there might be some interference from the forging methods or the materials used that will cause a drop in efficiency. Instead Zern designs and makes a sword from scratch, allowing his inscription to be its most effective. Zern then needs to..." The explanation continues on and on about how different choices in crafting can change the end result of the blade and how part of an Insriptionists job is knowing enough about that process to infer what the end result of their product will be when they apply the ancient symbol. It seems being an Inscriptionist has a lot more work to do then a blacksmith. But conversely the returns are just as high. If I am reading this right, ancient symbols are just a forgotten language that operate on more of a hieroglyphic nature in that the same symbol can mean multiple things not only based on surrounding symbols, but also on the writers intent at the time of creation. Caught in my musings I could not help but stifle a short gasp as I quickly realized something. If the symbols used are part of a dead language, am I able to use my trait as a sort of shortcut? Can I derive all meaning of a symbol instead of having to continuously contemplate over it? This is exactly the kind of thing I can potentially exploit to gain a huge advantage in this game. Looking through the back of the book is a symbol that the writer describes as the simplest to learn that's labelled 'enhance'. Looking at the symbol it seems as if someone carved into the very back of the book itself. The book also labels that it is 'Complete'. I study the symbol for a bit before wondering if I was wrong about my trait. Suddenly it feels as if something inside myself pulsed and suddenly I had to tear my eyes away from the book as a flood of concepts invaded my mind at once.

Images flashed and emotions reinforced themselves as I tried to pick apart what just flashed through my head. A crystalline structure tightening, coiling around itself until its just a fractal ever expanding in scope. A gaseous blob of something refines itself around the edge of a sword until it becomes razor thin. A shield seems to be bathed in a glowing white light as energy projects itself from the shield to form a dome around a man. On and on images of magical and physical feats impress themselves in my mind, feelings of becoming stronger, better, more are thrown out at me until they all boil down to just one word. Enhance. As I am coming out of my trance I notice a warm liquid trickling down my nose and just as a drop of it is about to hit the open page in front of me Erid appears out of nowhere with a hankerchief, expertly catching the drop of blood before shoving the cloth in my face.
"Here, use this Mr.MoonBright. We simply cannot have you bleeding on my books. Do you know how hard it is to get some of these? Especially the inscriptionist. Symbols aren't cheap you know." Erid says before opening the book back up and looking at the symbol. "You know most people do not have this kind to trying to understand the Ancient language. What exactly happened here?" Her curiosity unrestrained in her voice.
Steadying myself from the images that all but few have died down by now I manage to steadily reply "Ah yes I am sorry about that. I don't know what happened really. One minute I was reading this book the next I had this terrible headache. Although it does seem like my understanding of the symbol is greater then it previously was." I was then interrupted with a prompt.
A sudden feeling of knowing how to imbue an object with the power of enhance entered my mind. It seems you do not need to have the Inscriptionist skill to know how to add the symbol to something so there has to be more about the skill itself. Perhaps since it merges all of those other job skills it just lets me do all of those as well as Inscribing? This Continent does give a crafting bonus so maybe I should lean more on that then pure magic. hmm.
"It appears you have a greater Talent for Ancient Symbols then most Mr.MoonBright. Please try to no over exert yourself however. Now if you must excuse me a certain someone thinks they can nap and get away with it. I will be at the front when you are done be sure to return that hankerchief" Erid finishes speaking before leaving the room.
Excited to finally find something my trait could exploit, I quickly pack up my things, return the hankerchief, before finally leaving the library for now. I have a lot of things to study but for now It's time I made a plan.
