Chapter 28: Money Is The Question And The Answer

On the other side of the Gate, we were met with security.

"Please refrain from using Skills in the station, as we have dedicated areas for Teleportation." A bored looking officer was speaking to Fraya.

The officer or guard wasn't a slime person like the other workers at the first station I've been to was. Which might be racist of me to think. Or speciesist? Some kind of word ending in -ist. Anyway, the alien wasn't as tall as Xyke or Fraya, whom I never asked their species name I don't think. I was starting to see that it was common for aliens to be bipedal, and at least somewhat humanoid. 2 legs, 2 arms, 1 head, and standing up straight. This guy looked like he was made of white plastic. Either he just looks like that or he might be an android.

None of us bothered to tell the guard who cast the skill, but they did give us a map on where it should be cast to and from. They gave us a warning and walked away. Fraya handed me the map and we started walking a random direction.

"So, what are we doing first?" Fraya asked as we passed the small crowd in front of a popular looking restaurant.

I looked around before answering Fraya, checking out the scenery. The station was more like a megastructure of a mall. A very high class mall. It made me feel like a country bumpkin with my space suit, but the feeling went away when I remembered that Jimmy was much cooler than just some clothing. He was Jimmy after all.

"Not sure. Are there any shops listed in the folder?" I asked despite being the one holding the folder and currently looking through it.

"I only glanced at it." Fraya responded and Xyke just shrugged.

Looking through it more thoroughly, there were a few places listed though the foot notes told me they were a 'maybe' and not a definite thing.

"There's not much. Troublesome. Oh well, I'll just throw money at the problem until it goes away. There's got to be a website for guides or freelance workers. This place is huge after all." I offered an idea.

"Maybe? Isn't that going to take too long to find?" Xyke said but I wagged my finger.

"Already found it. Sent out a VIP request along with our descriptions." I had found the site for the station on the front page of my browser built into my HUD.

My HUD was so cool. It made my life so much easier. The browser was similar to something you would find back on Earth, just covered in alien symbols and images. Looking through my HUD apps, I found a map application that automatically downloads the public version of a 3D map of a station or planet if it has one. This one did, so I attached our current location to the request as well. It had most paths laid out, though it didn't have the employee only segments on it or the otherwise private areas on the station.

The map was still massive of course, since the Dyson Swarm of stations wrapped around a sun.

We only had to wait a few minutes before someone showed up to be our guide. I did a double take when I saw them approaching. Think 'alien butler' and that was our guy.

Taller than me, shorter than my friends. Slim. A really fancy black suit with some gold accents that surprisingly wouldn't be too out of place on Earth. It would look weird, but you wouldn't think 'alien' upon seeing it. The motherfucker had a white haired mustache and a monocle. I may have paid too much. Oh well.

"Madam Fraya, Sir Xyke, and Master... Azurath. My name is Tyler." My god he spoke with a perfect British accent.

He probably didn't expect that his employer, no matter how temporary, would be level 6. I know for a fact I wasn't expecting a name like Tyler. I gave him a nod.

'Tyler. Tyler the alien butler. What the hell is happening in my life?' I thought, stunned for a moment and stuck on his weirdly normal and not butlery name.

"Greetings. We need some help to find some places for making large purchases tailored for city construction. Price does not matter." I offered and it was his turn to nod.

"Very well. I have a few suggestions in mind, though they are quite far. Shall we take the monorail?" Tyler asked while he patted off some invisible dust from his impeccable suit.

I nodded and we were off. The monorail was as it sounded. A sort of rail car or train that ran between the stations. I had read about it some in the folder. While it did run on a singular rail while in proximity to the stations, they actually flew through space like a normal ship once it was far enough. The rail itself didn't use wheels either. It was something like magnets or gravity magic. Which ever was cheaper, I didn't know.

It took around 10 minutes of walking to reach the monorail port. It looked like a typical subway station. With platforms and the like. Except it had floating rails above on another, giving enough space for the cars to pass under freely. There were stairs and elevators for each 'floor' with a different platform number. It had that organized chaos about it.

"Young Master Azurath, I suggest you purchase a VIP pass for the elevators and monorails. With it, we can skip the long lines and cramped cars." Tyler suggested, and I easily agreed.

It was only 30k Shop Points... Alright, my sense of money was getting thrown off but I didn't want to ride buddy buddy with a bunch of strangers either.

The monorail we got access to was really nice, with plush seats that almost matched my pillows. Taking one of those treasures out would be weird though, so I settled into the lesser cushion. Fraya and Xyke were looking around out the window, smiling as they pointed out different things. I just enjoyed the ride in silence. Observing the passing stars, and of course the giant wall of fire that was the star in the middle of the Dyson Swarm.

The monorail did have a very nice tinted window, so I could actually see the surface of the sun and not be blinded by it's brightness. It was beautiful, and I found myself staring at it for the majority of the trip.

The monorail was fast, but the distance was great. The time it took was around 15 minutes of flight in the void, then another 2 minutes as the car moved into the station to find a platform. As we walked off of the car, there was a guard that checked that we actually had a VIP pass. There had been some hacking attempts for a free ride recently, but it wasn't any of our business.

Another 20 minutes of walking and we arrived at our first stop. I sighed. 'A whole hour of travel for one place? Damn it.' I thought as we walked in.

The name on the sign said this place was something something Consulting. I looked over at my friends.

"This next part is going to be pretty boring, probably. Are you sure you want to come in with me?" I asked Fraya and Xyke.

"I want to stick around for this at least once. Just to see what it's like." Xyke responded and Fraya nodded.

"It might be interesting!" Fraya added and I shrugged.

"Alright. Well, let's get this over with." I muttered and walked up to the front desk.

Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.

It took another couple of minutes getting an 'appointment' with someone. It was really just me bribing the employee until they let me speak to someone right away. The front desk employee had a name plate that said 'Laria' and she had tentacles on her head like hair. It reminded me of medusa, but more green and less scaly. Her eyes looked like they were built for water, not air. Though she didn't seem bothered.

A couple more minutes passed and we were finally speaking to someone, who had that customer service smile down pat. For their species anyway, it looked kind of creepy to me.

"I need a city planned then built by fully autonomous drones. The location is a bit too harsh for living beings, so we are limited to only machines and drones. Money is not an issue though, so I want only the best. Plans for the most luxurious city this side of the universe has ever seen." I got straight to the point.

"Well, I can certainly help with that! Though, having a budget would be best." Mr. Filgar said, his pink round head at odds with his weirdly sharp teeth and tiny body. He was shorter than me.

I thought about it for a bit. 'I have around 8 billion right now... so that's like 4 billion per Dungeon I can do in like an hour or less...'

"Let's go with... 25 trillion for now. Though it can increase if needed." I offered and Mr. Filgar didn't react to the number. My pals did though, I could sense the glances.

"Alright, now how many people will be living in this city?" He responded, and I didn't know.

"I don't have a number for that, but let's go with... 130 million people for now." I ran some calculations in my head.

The city would be where the mountain was, so it would be a rough circle about 30ish miles in diameter. I also accounted for the fact most aliens are taller than I am, along with how advanced the buildings could be. There was a chance that the skyscrapers could be much, much taller than what we have back at Earth.

"For a project like this, we will need a down payment before we begin planning. Since Tyler brought you to us, we'll give you a hefty discount but the price is still up there." Mr. Filgar said while sliding a paper across the table to me, his little arms not reaching far enough but my long arms could reach it just fine.

Reading it over, I checked the price. 2 billion and some odd change. Not bad compared to how expensive this project is going to be, but oh well.

"Now, we do have several payment pla-" I accidentally cut Mr. Filgar off when I sent him the total amount asked in one go.

"Sorry, you were saying?" I asked, feeling embarrassed that I cut him off.

"No, it's nothing. We'll get started right away~." He was smiling reeeally wide.

It felt genuine, but also really creepy. I smiled nervously, though he couldn't see it through my visor, and I nodded at him.

"Remember, I want only the best! I don't care what it costs, but I want this done quickly and properly. No cutting corners." I said as I stood, Mr. Filgar standing as well.

"Of course~! We should have some plans and contacts mocked up for you within the week! How should I contact you?" He asked, offering a tiny hand.

"Here's my ID, would you mind if I used your main room by the front desk as a teleportation point?" I sent a rather large and dense number that is my ID used on the universe spanning network, though he did give me an odd look at the mention of teleportation.

"I'm afraid I can't let you setup a teleportation array in my business. I wouldn't mind, but this is a rented space." He sounded apologetic but not really.

"It's fine, I have a Skill that let's me teleport. No array or whatever needed." I replied, opening 2 little Gates above the table. A black hole and white hole forming in the air.

"Oh then that's perfectly fine." Mr. Filgar's eyebrows went up but he agreed.

I nodded and disabled the Skill.

As we left, my friends started talking about the meeting.

"25 trillion? Isn't that too much?" Fraya asked.

"For 130 million people it almost tracks, and it certainly does for luxury living." I offered and Xyke chuckled.

"What, are you going to make the whole city luxurious?" Xyke asked and I nodded.

"Obviously. It's going to be awesome." I replied honestly.

"Well... it is certainly surprising." Tyler, who I had completely forgotten about said.

I definitely didn't jump slightly. Not at all.

"Do you really have 130 million people to settle Young Master?" Tyler continued.

"No." I said, trying to slip back into a regal and noble young master.

"How many do you have then? 100? 70?" Tyler probed and I sighed.

"Zero. Maybe 8. Well, at least 2." I said flatly and Tyler just stared at me for a moment.

"...Surprising indeed." Tyler muttered as we continued walking.

  "Sooo what now?" Xyke asked.

"No idea. I hadn't expected to find the place I needed immediately." That was probably thanks to my busted ass luck.

"Maybe we just explore? You know, be tourists?" Fraya offered and I thought about it.

"We might as well." I nodded and Fraya grinned, clearly excited about continuing the trip for pleasure rather than business.

Fraya immediately began asking Tyler questions about the best places for tourists to visit on station, and Xyke leaned down to whisper to me.

"How much did you pay for Tyler? Just curious." Xyke asked, sensing something.

"200k an hour." I replied, not whispering but certainly not hiding the response.

Xyke jolted like I had just slapped him. He looked like he was going to say something about how dumb I am then just sighed instead.

"Well, Fraya will make sure you get your moneys worth..." He straightened up and looked over at Fraya as she kept asking questions.

Tyler didn't seem to mind, his smooth formal British accent hinting at not even a little bit of discomfort.

I smiled. Today might be fun.

  ...

  --------- Mr. Filgar ---------

  Holy moly.

  HOLY MOLY.

I thought I was dealing with some rich kid with too much free time on his hands, coming to my business as a joke or some poor attempt at entertainment.

When the bra- Young Master, had said the budget to be around 25 trillion I thought he was fucking with me.

So I played along, offered some insane price that is not at all standard to scare him off, then he just pays it in FULL.

'Kid, you don't know it but you just saved my business.' I sent a silent thanks to the weird kid.

No... He was my best client now.

I wasn't going to squander this opportunity.

This job would have been completely impossible, if the Young Master hadn't paid upfront.

I could pay the ridiculous rent for my business now! I wasn't going to have to go bankrupt! YIPPEE!

I was dancing in my office, and had been as soon as my precious clients left. There was no music, just the sounds of me busting it down in sheer joy.

It was a habit my people had. A primal instinct to dance when we felt strong emotions. We hide it because it's embarrassing when other species see our "uncivilized" actions.

Lord Azurath wanted the best city this side of the universe had ever seen? I would give it to him.

Hell, I'll give him the best city this universe has ever seen period.

I chuckled as I did a perfect split, rose to my feet and spun gracefully.

  ...

  --------- Laria ---------

I work for a very weird man.

Mr. Filgar was dancing in his office again.

Except this time it wasn't the sad slow shuffle it usually was. He was really moving, with a wide grin and even chuckling to himself.

He's either lost it, or something really good has happened. The latter was more likely.

That Lord Azurath kid did not want to wait for a proper appointment so he kept sending me bribes.

It was a little wrong of me to swindle some money out of him, but things had been tight lately.

Mr. Filgar hadn't said anything, but I could tell the business was dying.

Delays on my paychecks hinted to that, since my boss always paid on time.

Thankfully the little weirdo had clearly made some sort of deal with my boss, another weirdo.

I didn't need direct line of sight to know what my boss was doing. My species could sense emotions and thoughts in others, like a shadow of a color super imposed over reality.

So I was currently watching a vibrant swirl of blue and red, the colors of happiness and joy, in the shape of my boss do a split and spin.

  It was rather impressive.

My species could tell if someone was good or bad from simply observing someone, which is why we're so hard to hire.

If the place gives us bad vibes, we don't even apply.

It's why I'm still here, in this once dying business. Because I like it.

The boss is kind, I can take long lunch breaks, and I can actually use my vacation days. Unlike most places where they claim some bogus reasons like "You've used too many sick days blah blah blah."

The Azurath kid was really weird in that I couldn't see anything clearly, like he was two beings at once. One emotion I could feel was a slight hunger, and another was bored nervousness?

  Odd.

I huffed at the thought, then hurried back to my spot at the front desk as my boss practically skipped to his door then calmly walked out.

"Laria! We have a lot of work to do. Close up for the day and come help me in the back. We're going to be busy for a good long while~." My boss couldn't keep all of his joy hidden.

I nodded and 'closed up' by locking the door and turning off the open sign.

Once I was done I headed to the back. A small office with a table in the middle of the room with a couple of chairs and some snacks spread out.

'Oh, this is one of those jobs...' Aka, a week of long nights. At least I got good overtime pay for these.

"Alright, look over this contract while I fill you in." Mr. Filgar started explaining what the new client wanted, still smiling wide.

As he spoke and as I read, I got more and more surprised.

By the time we were both done, my brow was practically one with my tentacles.

'Seems like our jobs are saved.' I thought happily, my boss's mood spreading to me.
