Interlude 2

  Narrator's POV

  Mato's Office

After Kibishi, Taoreta, and Kujira left on their mission, Mato went back to work on his side project.

What was the side project? It was research about Kibishi and his powers. It was also research on how in the world Taoreta had survived a gaping hole that was once her stomach.

Mato was there, sitting in his chair at his desktop.

With a side crack of his neck, he went on to crack his fingers, letting out the air that was between them. That was how they were able to creak in the first pce.

Putting that aside for now, Mato swiped the air, and the table near his desktop made coffee appear in thin air. No, more like it came up from inside the table itself. All nice and warm, the steam from the coffee was visible to the naked eye. Mato grabbed the cup of coffee and took a sip. He pced it down and turned serious as he typed away on his computer.

"Taoreta's survival is a miracle. A good one at that, too. I'm not angry that she survived, but still, the hole that was there healed like it was nothing. Sure, there's a scar there to show that the hole was once there, but still. No type of healing magic or regeneration could be that fast."

  What Mato mentioned was true.

By default, the supernatural had regeneration in their genes. The thing was, the regeneration wasn't that fast. It would take at least a whole night to fully heal that type of wound.

"Taoreta being able to move at least is something else as well," Mato muttered.

Mato took another sip of his coffee and pced it back down on the table.

"Maybe looking at The Grim Reaper's powers could help here..." Mato whispered as his typing started to speed up.

There was a reason why Mato was trying this suggestion.

Simply put, since Kibishi and Taoreta were close, maybe something that happened in the past might have happened once more. Another reason for this suspicion from Mato was the information that David and Riley had given to Akuma, and she had reported to The Founder and the rest of the adults.

"Akuma mentioned something about fmes, right? They surrounded Taoreta while she was on the ground. They came from Kibishi's body, so maybe these fmes could be the key to all of this." Mato clicked on the image of the reaper with many weapons behind its back.

Paragraphs of information about the reaper and its powers then appeared. And unfortunately, Mato had been reading this day in and day out. Nothing new about this information would change anything.

  ....Or so he thought.

"Huh?" Mato widened his eyes and highlighted a sentence.

"'The Grim Reaper is a concept of death. Meaning that whatever is 'Death' to the Reaper is the 'death' to outsiders. Furthermore, the 'death' itself comes in many shapes and forms. It can be obvious or it can be blind to the naked eye. Whatever this 'concept' is to the reaper will be the result of the power.' Wait a second... let's say the concept depends on the person who wields that power. Does that mean those fmes aren't really fmes?"

Mato paused and then looked at the roof.

"But wait... how could David and Riley see the fmes? I mean, I saw the fmes, too, but that's for another reason. Did Akuma see the fmes as well?" Mato narrowed his eyes and pced his index finger under his chin. "Wait... maybe. Oh!" Mato brought himself closer to the desktop and highlighted the word "blind".

"It can be obvious or it can be blind to the naked eye! What if Kibishi is LETTING us see those fmes? Wait! What if only a selected few can see the fmes?! Does Taoreta see them? Can the monsters?! Can the creatures?! At the end of the day, it's up to HIM!" Mato smiled and hopped off his chair. "Of course! The prisoners must have felt the fmes while Akuma, Riley, and David could SEE them!"

Mato shouted and raised his fist into the air. But that moment died down when he lowered his brows and sat back down slowly. "But wait... Kibishi didn't know Akuma at that point in time. So how in the world did she see it? Did she... see it?"

Mato hung his head in disappointment.

"Argh!!! This is getting me nowhere! Forget that right now!" Mato scratched his head like crazy as he shook it back and forth a couple of times. Once he calmed down, Mato sighed deeply and turned serious. "Well, I can say for certain that somehow, back then, Kibishi used those fmes and used one of his abilities as the concept of death. The fmes are part of the concept of his 'death', that much I can be certain of."

  Mato frowned.

"But then... why is he letting people see what the image of the concept of 'death' is to him? That's a huge disadvantage if the enemy can see it. Hmm... I'd say maybe those who aren't 'bad' can see it. Hmm... no, that's stupid. If you're strong enough then maybe you can see it. Mm... I don't know, man..." Mato shook his head and went back to work. He closed the windows that had information about the concept of 'death' and started to do his normal thing.

Well, he wanted to do that.

But Mato ended up opening back up the page with the concept of 'death' with a straight face.

"I can't stop now. If I can at least compare what the concept of 'death' is meant to be, then maybe I can help him hide it better..." Mato muttered.

Could it be done? It was possible.

Would it be done? Who knew.

The mystery of Kibishi and his powers grew as time went on. But at the very least, Mato now knew that it was Kibishi's powers that had saved Taoreta's life. How it had saved her life was another mystery in itself. But Mato knew that it was Kibishi's powers. He just didn't know how or when it had happened.

Either way, it was satisfying enough to have a clear head. Somewhat.

At any rate, Mato knew that this was only the beginning of the research. The question was, would that research be done?

  Yes? No? Maybe so?

There was no definite answer at that very moment...
