Chapter 10

  James

He had only been leading his men around for an hour when he heard the bird. He stopped instantly and held his hand up for quiet.

“This way,” He whispered and left the path to follow the bird’s chirps. James was sure that when he found the bird he would find his brother, it was such a Peter thing to do, play a game of hide-n-seek to reunite with him.

“Captain? Where are we going, why did we leave the path?” Mart asked, “I thought you said it was dangerous to wander?” James nodded, it was dangerous, especially for adults.

Neverland didn’t particularly like grown-ups and if they managed to reach its shores the island would do its best to get rid of them. “Do you hear that bird? The one that sounds like a mocking laugh?”

Mart paused and listened along with the rest of the crew. “That’s the hide-n-seek bird it loves to find hiding people and make them un-hidden,” James explained.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

The ‘hide-n-seek’ bird was one that he had named as a child. Especially annoying while trying to play the game itself, the brothers had lost many a game to its cries. Peter had wanted to name it ‘Snitch’ as he hated the bird but James had won that particular game.

Mart looked a bit befuddled, but it was understandable the creatures here could be found nowhere else and followed the island’s rules and logic. Most adults couldn’t and wouldn’t understand, but that was okay. James had time to teach them, he was sure Peter would enjoy it as well.

“Almost there,” James whispered as the bird’s cries got louder. His heart beat with excitement and he readied himself to see his brother. Peter likely still looked young as the fairies had slowed his aging the moment they had arrived as children, James looked forward to teasing him.

10 years without his brother by his side had been hard. They had been together since birth and for a long time he had thought it unimaginable to ever live a second without him, but time was inescapable and he was now 26 years old.

No matter how different he and his twin now might be, they were still brothers and nothing could change that. So as James came around the last tree and laid his eyes on the familiar neon green bird body he couldn’t help but call out for his other half.

  “Peter?”
