Information Sheet 5: The Umbral Abyss

  What Is The Umbral Abyss:

The Umbral Abyss is a vast crater hidden deep within the mountains of the Mist Continent. Its existence is veiled from the outside world by a permanent shroud of dense black mist, a manifestation of the Domain of Lord Noctem, the crater's ruler and a Lesser Legendary. No outsider can see through this fog, and very few who enter the Umbral Abyss ever return. Despite its name, the Umbral Abyss is not lifeless. It is a world within a world, home to lush underground forests, silent rivers, crystalline caverns, and ancient ruins of unknown origin. The mist softens sunlight into a constant twilight glow, giving the place its haunting, dreamlike quality. Myths claim that the Abyss is both a sanctuary and a prison. A place where many powerful Pokemon dwell unseen by the outside world, protected by the mist’s unyielding secrecy.

  History:

The Umbral Abyss, once known as Jaws of the Abyss, was born 331 years ago, carved into existence by the Greater Legendary Giratina, who gifted it to his faithful servant, Lord Noctem, upon his ascension from Mythical to Lesser Legendary. The event reshaped the mountain range entirely, a single cataclysmic burst of shadow energy hollowed the earth, leaving behind a crater so deep its bottom vanished beneath darkness. From the moment of its creation, the Umbral Abyss was sealed from outside eyes, the black mist rising like a living curtain. Lord Noctem took dominion over it, shaping its ecosystem to reflect his power and will. Other Mythical Pokemon, drawn by the concentrated energy within the crater, began to settle there in the centuries that followed, forming territories and alliances that now define its hidden order. Roughly a century and a half ago, Lord Noctem fell into a deep slumber at the crater’s heart, supposedly to regenerate from his battle with another Lesser Legendary, the Zeraora known as the 'Storm Menace' Zuko. In his absence, his daughter Sia took stewardship of his domain, ensuring stability among the Mythicals and the balance of life within the Umbral Abyss. She did not, however, appreciate the petty politics and shunned them.

The Mythicals And Territories Of The Umbral Abyss:

Though the Umbral Abyss is united beneath the long shadow of Lord Noctem’s dominion, its depths are anything but uniform. Over the centuries, its energy has fractured and settled into distinct territories, each shaped by the Mythical or Legendary who calls it home. Together, they form a fragile balance of power.

At the center and stretching far into the south lies Lord Noctem’s own domain, a vast expanse where the mist thickens into a living shroud. It is said that the very air there hums with his power, the fog pulsing faintly to the rhythm of his breath as he slumbers deep below. Since his descent into deep slumber more than a century ago, stewardship of these lands has fallen to his daughter, Sia, the Princess of the Umbral Abyss. Once ruler only of the southeastern reaches, she is now holding nearly half of the crater. Though young by Mythical standards, Sia’s restraint and quiet vigilance have kept the peace in her father’s absence, her authority as his heir respected even by those older and far more willful than herself who still fear the wratch of Lord Noctem once he awakes again.

North of Sia’s borders, where the shadows meet water, lies the tranquil dominion of Nayru, a Phione whose territory encompasses the great central lake of the crater.

To the west, the terrain shifts into a labyrinth of broken cliffs and mirrored pools, Miu’s territory. True to her nature, its boundaries are never fixed. Paths twist differently each day, landmarks vanish and reappear, and illusions dance across the surface of the stone. Miu herself moves between the western reaches and a smaller enclave she maintains in the east. Dungeons run rapant in her territory, barely kept in check.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

The eastern stretches of the Umbral Abyss belong to Vian, whose warmth brings rare clarity to the perpetual dusk. Here, the mist thins just enough for sunlight to filter through in faint gold beams, and it is under Vian’s protection that Newleaf Village stands. His energy gives the settlement its flicker of peace and safety, a balance of light that the Abyss itself seems to respect.

Sharing his border is Shae, the Shaymin, whose gentle influence keeps the central-east alive with moss, flowers, and the scent of earth, a rare hint of color in an otherwise muted world. Vian and Shae work in harmony, their territories overlapping in a partnership that sustains both the land and its inhabitants.

Far to the north, the stone hardens into gleaming crystal where Queen Velari, the Diancie, reigns. Her kingdom sparkles with the light of countless Carbink, each gem-lined corridor leading toward her citadel, the only stable gateway in and out of the Abyss. From there, she oversees trade and movement, her word law to any who would cross through her Domain. Twice each year, she allows passage to and from the outside world, honoring an agreement made long ago with Newleaf Village. Though a Lesser Legendary in her own right, Velari’s rule remains separate, her fortress a glittering reminder that even within Noctem’s realm, power takes many forms.

The only region left untamed lies in the northwest, a jagged wilderness scarred by endless destruction and overflowing with wild uncontrollable, untamed, and most of all powerful, Dungeons. Long ago, it was ruled by Zuko, the Zeraora known as the Storm Menace. His lightning tore through the skies until Lord Noctem himself rose to strike him down, banishing him. No one knows where Zuko vanished to, but his claim on the territory remains. None of the Mythicals dare take it.

  Newleaf Village:

Nestled within the eastern inner wall of the Umbral Abyss, Newleaf Village is the only true settlement of Pokemon within the crater. A total of 411 Pokemon call it their home. It was founded 116 years ago by two now-forgotten Lesser Legendaries as a refuge for their friends, Newleaf Village has long since become home to ordinary Pokemon seeking peace within the crtaer’s borders. The founders departed soon after establishing it, leaving behind a sanctuary that has endured through quiet cooperation and Vian’s protection. Few remember who the founders truly were, only the Mythicals and a handful of elders still whisper their names. For most villagers, Newleaf is simply home.

What Other Characters Say About the Umbral Abyss:

  Yuki (Torchic):

"I’ve lived here all my life and to me it's simply home! I know every path around the village, most Dungeons in the immediate surroundings as well. But sometimes I look toward the crater's rim and wonder what’s out there. How the wider world is compared to this small and isolated village. That we're blocked from ever finding out is sad. Everyone says the Umbral Abyss keeps us safe, that no one who leaves ever came back and that goodbyes would be final. But that just makes me want to see it even more! I love this place, I really do! But loving something doesn’t mean you never want to look past it. Maybe one day, when Lord Noctem wakes, the mist will open just a little… and I’ll see the outside for myself."

  Miu:

"The Umbral Abyss… oh, it’s beautiful, I’ll give it that! Giratina’s perfect little gift, an isolated prison just like Lord Noctem wanted it to be. You can’t leave, of course, not unless you're a lesser Legendary and use your own Domain against his. Honestly, I hate it! The moment Lord Noctem awakens and drops his Domain a little, I'm out of here! But before that, I have a few things to get done, things that unfortunately require me to stay here still a little longer."

  Sia:

"The Abyss is my father’s creation, his Domain, his proof of power. I inherited it, though unlike others, I’ve never truly felt like that had to be my responsibility. I never wanted to rule. The politics, the endless rivalries, they drain the energy out of you faster than you could ever replenish it. So yeah, I mostly let the Mythicals do whatever they want, as long as they don't bother me. Still, the Umbral Abyss... it's my home. And I will defend it or try to reign the other Mythicals in, should it prove necessary. I really just hopes father wakes up soon to take over again..."
