Vance slammed a fist on the ground. “Damn it, I’ve had enough of this!”
A colossal, segmented tail—belonging to a beast that looked like a scorpion made of granite—swung from the shadows. It connected with a sickening thwack. Vance’s eyes bulged, all air leaving his lungs in a bloody cough as he was launched across the cavern like a discarded toy.
“VANCE!” Theo yelled.
Before the beast could pounce, ice erupted from the ground at Frederick Hauser’s feet. Jagged spires shot upward, meeting and fusing overhead with a crystalline shriek to form a thick, translucent dome, sealing the students inside just as the tail slammed down again, shaking the barrier.
Frederick Hauser’s Signature: Cryokenisis is a Type III (Emission), Tier 1 ability. He projects and shapes supercooled moisture into defensive and offensive objects. The ice actively mends under his continuous focus, but the strain is immense.
Inside the dome, Frederick breathed out a plume of frost, his face taut with concentration. “I don’t know how long I can hold this.”
Theo sprinted to where Vance lay crumpled. “Are you okay?”
Vance pushed himself up on trembling arms, spitting a glob of blood onto the red dirt. “Of course I’m not, you idiot,” he rasped, a furious grin on his bloody lips. “I’ve never been hit like that. Not even by my own mother.”
“Can you still stand?”
Vance shoved Theo’s helping hand away. “Get away from me. I don’t need your help.”
Near the dome’s center, Emily Jones cradled Instructor Stan’s head in her lap, her hands glowing with a soft green light as she tried to stabilize his ragged breathing. “Hang in there, Mr. Stan…”
Outside, the man with dusty hair and clothes placed a palm against the frigid barrier. “One of those kids has a pretty amazing Signature,” he remarked, watching as a web of cracks began to seal itself. “The ice is mending itself.”
Beside him stood a woman in a sleek, provocative black dress that seemed to drink the light. In her hand, she coiled and uncoiled a barbed whip that was not held, but grown from her wrist.
Her Signature: Wild Card is a Type IV (Conceptual), Tier 2 ability. She imposes her will on the nervous systems of non-human creatures, bending them to her command. Her control inexplicably extends to the native Breach monsters, making her a devastating force multiplier. She is a 2nd Gen Augment.
She snapped her whip against the ground with a sound like a gunshot. “Hey, you with the turtle back,” she called, her voice a silken command. “Break through this ice.”
The four-legged, shelled monster that had incapacitated Stan immediately obeyed. It retracted its limbs and shot forward, a buzzing, brutal wheel of destruction.
CRASH-BOOM!
The dome didn’t just crack; a whole section exploded inward in a storm of diamond-hard shards. The shockwave blew students off their feet.
Only one stood in the path of the rolling behemoth. Leo planted his feet, his leonine muscles coiling, and roared—a sound of pure, defiant challenge. He caught the spinning horror in his arms.“YOU WILL NOT HARM MY COLLEAGUES!”
Leo’s Signature: Therianthropic Shift is a Type II (Alteration), Tier 1 ability. His physiology is permanently shifted, granting him the strength, senses, and traits of a great predator. He cannot turn it off.
The ground cratered beneath him. The sound of straining muscle and grinding shell filled the air. For three seconds, he held, the veins in his arms and neck threatening to burst, his chest and face getting brutally sanded by the spinning carapace.
Then, with a final, sickening grind, he was overpowered. The monster launched him through the air to land in a broken heap.
“LEO!” his classmates screamed.
The beast uncurled, its form shifting, standing on two legs. It wasn’t a mindless monster. Its eyes held cruel intelligence. It laughed, a wet, gurgling sound. “Did you really think you could overpower me, kid? You’re out of your league here.” This was an Augment. A human who had consumed monster flesh to warp and enhance their own Signature.
“Frederick, fix the hole!” Lily shouted.
Frederick strained, sweat freezing on his brow. New ice crawled over the breach. But he was too late. Four more figures slipped through the gap before it sealed.
Edgar stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. “Looks like we have to fight.”
Lily Cinclare walked calmly to the front, her eyes assessing the new threats. “All of you with offensive Signatures, form on me. We have to work together if we want to survive this.”
Vance tried to stand, stumbled. Theo moved to help.
“Let go of me!” Vance snarled, shoving him back. “Who do you think I am, some girl that needs protection?”
Every girl in earshot turned to glare at him.
Vance blanched. “I didn’t mean it like that.” Limping, he moved to stand beside Lily, flames flickering weakly but defiantly at his fists. “These wanna-be criminals think they can take us on. Let’s show them why we’re Signates.”
From the Augments, a man with brown skin and hair crackling with static electricity stepped forward. “I see you have some balls. Come on, then. Show us what you got.”
His Signature: Voltaic Surge is a Type III (Emission), Tier 1 ability, augmented by monster biomass to increase output and conductivity. He is a 3rd Gen Augment.
Another, whose skin was patterned with red scales, exhaled a plume of sulfurous smoke. “Let’s kill them all.”
His Signature: Dragon’s Breath is a Type III (Emission), Tier 1 ability, now producing hotter, more corrosive flames. He is a 3rd Gen Augment.
A third with moss-green skin chuckled, his body shimmering as his forearm elongated and flattened into a gleaming, razor-sharp blade of living metal. “I’m getting excited.”
His Signature: Iron Hardening is a Type II (Alteration), Tier 1 ability, allowing him to transform his body into weaponized ferrous material. He is a 3rd Gen Augment.
Then, from the back, the massive, purple-skinned Augment that had fought Stan shouldered its way forward. Its black eyes fixed on the students. Its right arm began to swell, distorting, muscles and tendons expanding grotesquely.
His Signature: Expand is a Type II (Alteration), Tier 2 ability. He can selectively inflate the mass and size of his body parts, trading agility for devastating power. He is a 2nd Gen Augment.
The cage of ice had become a killing jar. The Augments inside smiled. The students braced. The lesson was over. Merely a week into the school year, they had to take the final exam.
Benson Simeon’s eyes, wide behind his glasses, locked onto the Augment with electricity crackling around his form. In a flash of insight, Benson’s hands shot out, palms up. From the air itself, with soft pops of displaced matter, a dozen pairs of thick-soled, rubber-soled boots materialized at his feet.

Benson Simeon’s Signature: Materialized Blueprint is a Type IV (Conceptual), Tier 2 ability. He can create physical, functional objects through instant, telekinetic assembly. The creation is not magic; it requires him to know the object's exact molecular composition and mechanical function in perfect detail. The boots were a basic, well-understood design for him.
“Everyone, put these on! Quickly!” he yelled, his voice sharp with urgency.
The electric Augment smirked. “I don’t think this is the time you should be changing clothes, kid.”
The students scrambled, pulling on the boots just as the brown-skinned Augment—Voltaic Surge—spoke, his eyes scanning their ranks with predatory focus. “Before we begin,” he said, his voice a low hum, “there are some of you we have to take down first.”
He vanished. Not in a blur—in the crushing gravity, his movement was a discontinuity. One moment he was ten meters away; the next, he was behind Ethan Carter. A crackling fist buried itself in Ethan’s gut. The boy’s eyes bulged, all breath leaving him as he was launched upward, slamming into the ice ceiling with a dull thud before sliding down, unconscious before he hit the ground.
“ETHAN!” Sylvie screamed.
The Augment was already gone. A lightning-kicked foot connected with Blessing Johnson’s chest. She didn’t cry out; the impact was a silent, brutal expulsion of air. She shot backward, slammed into the ice wall, and slumped, motionless.
Edgar’s blood ran cold.
The purple-skinned Augment with the expanding arm—Expand—nodded in satisfaction. “Good thing we took that boy out first. If he’d used his Signature, we would have been done for.”
Lily’s mind raced, a cold fury cutting through her fear.
“DIEEEE!” Vance’s roar shattered the stunned silence. He didn’t aim at the speedster. He unleashed a torrent of searing flame from his fists directly at the Augment with the metal arm—Iron Hardening.
The scaled Augment—Dragon’s Breath—stepped in, his chest expanding. A jet of orange, corrosive flame roared from his mouth. The two fire streams met in mid-air with a deafening WHOOSH, clashing in a violent vortex of heat that scorched the ice and sent a blistering gust of wind through the dome.
“It’s so hot!” Sylvie cried, shielding her face.
Dykes Tucker used the distraction. He became a blur of motion, delivering a rapid flurry of Booster-enhanced punches to the metal Augment’s torso. The sound was like hitting an anvil. Dykes grunted in pain, his knuckles splitting open against the unyielding surface. The metal man barely flinched, swinging his bladed arm in a wide arc. Dykes barely twisted away in time.
Elizabeth Kallon saw an opening. She cupped her hands, compressing the thick air between them with a visible strain. A shimmering, unstable orb of super-pressurized gas formed.
Elizabeth Kallon’s Signature: Aero-Compression is a Type III (Emission), Tier 1 ability. She can compress large volumes of air into dense, volatile spheres.
She hurled it at the giant-handed Augment. He dodged with surprising agility. The orb struck the ice wall behind him and detonated, not with fire, but with a concussive BANG of released pressure that shook the entire dome and sent cracks racing through the ice.
Chloe Spencer didn’t wait. A series of small, controlled Kinetic Detonations erupted beneath her feet—bam-bam-bam—propelling her into the air like a human rocket.
Chloe Spencer’s Signature: Kinetic Detonation is a Type III (Emission), Tier 1-2 ability. She projects concussive explosions of pure kinetic force.
She soared toward the turtle-shelled Augment, unleashing blast after blast at his carapace. The impacts echoed like cannon fire.
The Augment groaned but stood firm, his shell smoking. “It’ll take more than that to get through my shell, girl!”
A crystalline flash cut through the air. Mara Kova had lunged, a long, razor-sharp sword of flawless diamond grown from her own hand.
Mara Kova’s Signature: Crystalline Growth is a Type II (Alteration), Tier 1 ability. She can project and shape super-hard crystal from her body.
The diamond edge sheared through a segment of the Augment’s toughened shell. He roared in surprise and pain, dark ichor welling from the cut.
“Now!” Edgar yelled. He slapped the air with both palms.
Edgar’s Signature: Repulsion is a Type III (Emission) / Type IV (Conceptual) Borderline, Tier 1 ability. He generates a field of pure repulsive force.
An invisible wave of force slammed into the wounded Augment, hurling him back across the cavern. Edgar didn’t stop. He leapt, and with another dual-palmed blast downward, shot himself through the air like a bullet, aiming a devastating flying kick.
The Augment recovered, tucking into his wheel form and launching forward to meet him.
They collided.
Not physically. Edgar’s repulsion field met the spinning carapace with a screech of tortured energy. A visible shockwave rippled out, cracking the ground beneath them. They hung in a violent stalemate, Edgar suspended in mid-air, arms outstretched, blood beginning to drip from his nose from the strain. “AAAAAH!” he screamed, pushing with everything he had.
Theo was stunned.
Chloe landed behind the struggling Augment. She planted her feet wide, brought her hands together, palms facing each other. The air between them warped, glowing with pent-up energy as she charged a massive, focused blast.
BOM.
A single, concentrated beam of kinetic force, thicker than her torso, lanced out and struck the Augment point-blank in the back. The sound was a deafening CRUMP of pure violence. The Augment’s shell visibly fractured. Chloe was thrown backward by the recoil, a sickening pop-pop echoing as both her shoulders dislocated. She hit the ground with a cry of agony.
The Augment shrieked, not in pain, but in rage. “I’M DONE PLAYING WITH YOU!”
With a final, grinding heave, he overcame Edgar’s repulsion. A giant, clawed foot snapped out.
The impact was brutal. Edgar lost three teeth in a spray of blood and was catapulted across the dome. He slammed into the ice wall beside the unconscious Blessing and slid down, leaving a crimson streak, out cold.
In the sudden, ringing silence, the Augments stood victorious over the broken forms of Ethan, Blessing, Edgar, and Chloe. The Dust-Man watched from outside the dome, a faint smile on his lips. The cage was holding. And the specimens were breaking.
