Ch. 53 - To Shreds

A hush had settled over the apartment—thick with warmth and the lingering pulse of what they’d just shared. The only light was the soft gold of early evening, spilling in through the windows, painting everything in honeyed hues.

Ariel sat on the floor, legs sprawled and bare, the remains of her dress in a crumpled heap beside her. The seam Holly had ripped was torn wide open now, the fabric stretched past repair. Her hair was a wild, tangled mess, cheeks still flushed, her chest rising and falling in slow, deep breaths.

Holly sat at her side, also bare, knees tucked up, arms looped loosely around Ariel’s plush waist. She leaned into Ariel, resting her head on Ariel’s shoulder, a hand drifting in lazy circles over the fullness of her soft belly—so recently worshipped, so recently filled.

They sat there, pressed close, backs against the couch, hearts slowly coming down from the high.

For a while, neither spoke. They just listened to their breathing and the faint sound of the city below.

It was Ariel who broke the silence first, her voice hoarse but sweet, tinged with laughter and disbelief. “That was… I mean—wow. That was…” She trailed off, unable to find a word big enough for what they’d just done.

Holly’s laugh was breathless, almost giddy. “Yeah. That was. I’m gonna be thinking about that for… ever.”

Ariel tipped her head to look at Holly, catching the sparkle in her eyes. “You tore my dress to shreds,” she teased, grinning. “Totally ruined.”

Holly grinned, unrepentant. “That dress didn’t stand a chance. I’m not even sorry. God, Red… you looked so fucking hot bursting out of it. I’m tempted to buy you more, just to rip ‘em all over again.”

Ariel snorted, then winced, her hand instinctively cradling her stuffed belly. “Careful. I think if you fed me one more bite, I’d have burst, too.”

Holly’s hand slid over the curve of Ariel’s side, gentle now. “You took every bit I could give. You’re amazing.” She paused, then pressed a kiss to Ariel’s shoulder. “And so beautiful.”

Ariel let herself relax into the affection, eyes fluttering shut. “I never thought I’d love being ruined like that. Never thought I could want someone so much. Not just… like this, but everything. All of you.”

Holly pressed closer, her voice soft and raw. “All of me is yours. Forever, Red. I’m never letting go.”

Ariel smiled, pulling Holly tighter against her side. “Good. Because after tonight, you’re definitely stuck with me. And you’re definitely buying me a new dress.”

Holly laughed, bright and real, her head falling against Ariel’s chest as they both dissolved into giggles—exhausted, elated, and utterly content.

For a long, gentle moment, they just breathed together—bodies tangled, hearts quiet, the apartment holding them safe in the golden afterglow.

A little while later, the apartment was aglow with lamplight. The chaos of earlier—crumbs, frosting, and the ruined dress—had given way to a gentle calm. Both women were now in pajamas: Holly in an oversized retro magical girl t-shirt and fuzzy shorts, Ariel in soft, too-tight pajama pants and a blue cotton top that had clearly lost the fight with her still-round, stuffed belly. A generous swath of skin peeked out, but Ariel didn’t care—she just pressed close to Holly, head on Holly’s shoulder, their legs tangled, a cozy blanket draped over both of them.

The muted hum of the city was their only backdrop. Holly absently rubbed Ariel’s exposed belly with one hand, the other playing with Ariel’s hair.

After a few minutes of sweet silence, Holly nudged Ariel gently. “So, Director McIntyre—how are you really feeling about all this? The promotion, I mean. Not just the sexy dress destruction, but the big, scary, world-changing stuff.”

Ariel let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She traced a slow circle on Holly’s thigh with her finger, her brow furrowing. “Honestly? I’m feeling everything all at once. Excited, for sure—like, I keep waiting for someone to say it was a joke, or that I read the letter wrong. But also nervous. It’s so much more responsibility than I’ve ever had. And… I’m really going to miss Jim.”

Her voice softened, eyes growing distant for a moment. “He’s been there since my very first day. Even when I felt invisible. He always saw me. I don’t know if I’d have made it through the fire, through recovery, if he hadn’t been so… constant.” She paused, the weight of gratitude and change in her voice. “But I’m ready, Hol. I really am. I want this. I want to lead, not just keep things running but actually build something amazing. The team’s huge now—four times the size I was leading before. But I want to make them feel seen, the way Jim did for me. The way you do.”

Holly smiled, pride clear in her eyes. She reached over and pressed a kiss to Ariel’s hair, then fixed her with a playful, squinting look. “Ready to build more super secret projects you can’t tell your awesome girlfriend about?”

Ariel giggled, her green eyes sparkling. “That’s what I’m looking forward to the most. Torturing you with mystery. I’m going to start leaving even more cryptic sticky notes on my monitor, just to keep you guessing.”

Holly gasped, clutching her chest dramatically. “You monster. I’ll have to start hacking your email for clues. Or bribing Jordan for intel.”

Ariel snorted. “Jordan would totally crack under pressure. Or he’d make something up just to see you squirm.”

They laughed together, the playful energy soothing any lingering nerves.

Holly settled back into the cushions, gently massaging the side of Ariel’s exposed belly. “Hey… whatever comes next, I hope you know how proud I am of you. Not just for getting the title, but for coming through everything and still wanting to build, to lead, to love people. You’re… you’re kind of my hero, you know that?”

Ariel’s eyes glistened, the softest smile blooming. “I only ever wanted to be that for you. You’re my momentum, Hol. Every bit of courage I’ve ever had, you helped me find.”

Holly pulled her closer, nose buried in Ariel’s hair. “Then you’d better keep leading. And I’ll keep making sure your wardrobe can’t keep up.”

Ariel laughed, belly shaking gently. “Deal. But you’re responsible for all tailoring bills from now on.”

Holly grinned, her thumb tracing slow circles over Ariel’s bare skin. “Worth every penny.”

For a while longer, they simply breathed together, the future wide open before them, comfort and challenge alike. The world outside faded to a distant hush as they soaked in the golden moment—a new act beginning, together.
