(Yumi's Perspective)
Year 4995
The sun's rays were a burning white stab in her eyes.
After two years of eternal darkness, the light was painful, but it was a living pain, a pain that meant freedom.
Yumi crawled out of the tunnel, feeling the damp grass beneath her hands and the smell of clean earth filling her lungs, chasing out the stench of mold and despair that had clung to her soul. Beside her, Akira emerged, panting, his face covered in dirt and sweat, but his eyes shone with a wild victory.
"Come on! Hurry before they discover our escape!" Akira shouted, grabbing her hand and starting to run.
Running through the alleys of the "Swamp of Shadows" was a surreal experience.
The dilapidated houses, the filthy puddles of mud, the hopeless faces peering from broken windows... it was all ugly, but it was real. It was the world of the living, and she was no longer a ghost in a cell. She ran, her long-unused muscles burning, her heart pounding violently not just from fear, but from life itself.
Suddenly, she stopped.
In the middle of a side alley, a group of older children were kicking and shoving a small body on the ground. She heard the sound of muffled crying and saw tufts of fiery red hair stuck in the mud.
"Akira," she said in a faint voice. "Shouldn't we help him?"
Akira turned and looked at the scene coldly.
"Are you a fool?" he said, pulling her forcefully. "Look at his hair! He's a Prometheus! He deserves what's happening to him! Besides, we don't have time! Run!"
She let him pull her along, but she cast one last glance over her shoulder. She saw the little boy's face for a moment, hazel eyes filled with tears and helpless rage. She felt a pang of pity, a strange and familiar feeling, as if she were seeing a version of herself in a different kind of mud.
They finally reached a hut that looked even more dilapidated than the rest, its door hanging on a single hinge. Akira knocked on the door in a strange rhythm. "Tiger, lion, ant."
The door opened to reveal a tall, thin man, his face a map of scars, the most prominent being an old burn scar that ran from his temple to his neck.
"Come in," the man said in a calm, deep voice.
Inside, the hut was in stark contrast to its exterior. It was clean, organized, and the walls were covered with weapons and maps.
"Yumi, this is Kaito," Akira said, panting.
Kaito looked at Akira, then at Yumi.
"I can't believe it. You really escaped from that prison."
"I wouldn't have succeeded without this mischievous fox-girl," Akira said. "But we have to get out of the city quickly. Where are the others?"
Kaito fell silent. His face became a mask of stone.
"They're dead."
"What?" Akira said in shock. "All of them?"
"All of them," Kaito continued coolly. "They raided our headquarters After they caught you. I was the only survivor."
Akira sat down on a wooden chair and buried his face in his hands in silence.
He didn't cry, but Yumi saw his shoulders trembling.
"I can smuggle you two out," Kaito said, looking at Yumi. "But... your appearance draws attention. Those ears, and that tail."
"So what?" Akira shouted angrily.
"We must make a sacrifice," Kaito said, his eyes holding no emotion.
"We have to cut them off."
"Impossible!" Akira screamed, jumping to his feet. "I won't allow it!"
"Shut up, Akira!" Kaito said sharply. "Would you rather die? The world has forced cruelty upon us, and we must be crueler than it to survive. Don't hate me," he said, looking at Yumi.
"Hate the one you're running from."
Silence fell. Then, in a quiet, strong voice that surprised everyone, Yumi said, "I'll do it."
She looked at Akira, who was staring at her in shock. "I will cut off my tail and my ears."
The pain was searing, white, and absolute. Yumi bit down on the rough cloth Kaito had given her, tasting blood and wood in her mouth. She saw the short sword come down and felt a sharp, cold tearing, first at the base of her tail, then at her ears.
She did not scream. Silent tears streamed down her face, but she made no sound. In that moment, she didn't feel like she was losing a part of her body; she felt she was burning the last bridge connecting her to her past, to her old identity.
When he was finished, Kaito took what was left, put it in the stove, and burned it. The smell of burning fur filled the room, the scent of a silent funeral. He treated her wounds with some medicinal herbs and bandages, then closed his eyes for a moment.

"The guards have discovered your escape. We must hurry."
He led them through a secret passage behind the hut into old, dark tunnels. The tunnels were suffocating, the smell of ancient earth filling the air. After a long walk in the dark, they reached the end of the tunnel, at a rusty iron ladder leading up.
"From here, you are on your own," Kaito said. "These tunnels extend to the 'Iron and Cross Road'. There, look for a merchant named Rio. The password is the same."
"Come with us, Kaito," Akira said in a low voice.
Kaito shook his head. "This city is everything to me, Akira.
My soul belongs to it. I will not run. I will stay." He looked at them one last time. "Now go."
They climbed the ladder and found themselves in a dark warehouse that smelled of spices. A man in his forties was waiting. "Kaito contacted me," he said quietly. "I am Rio. Follow me, quickly."
He led them to a cargo wagon. He gave them two simple metal rings.
"These will hide your energy signatures. Hide in here." He pointed to a small secret compartment under the wagon's floor. They entered the tight darkness and felt the wagon begin to move.
It was a tense journey. They reached a checkpoint. They heard the guard's voice speaking with Rio. "I remember you came a week ago. Why do you want to leave so soon?"
"I finished my work early, sir," Rio replied calmly.
"Open the wagon. Inspection.
"
Yumi held her breath. She heard the sound of the guards' footsteps above her, and their voices as they moved the goods. Then, after an eternity, the guard said, "Alright. Go."
When they were clear of the gate, Rio opened the compartment. "We are in the safe zone now."
Long days passed inside the rough wagon. The initial fear of being pursued faded, replaced by the monotonous rhythm of travel and a fragile safety.
Through a small crack in the wood, Yumi watched the vast green plains replace the barren lands surrounding Chang'an, and for the first time in years, she felt herself breathing air that did not smell of fear. One quiet evening, while Akira was asleep beside her, she gathered her courage and turned to the merchant who was driving in silence.
"Sir Rio..." she said in a low voice, "where exactly are we going?"
Rio looked at her over his shoulder, a kind smile on his tired face. "We are going somewhere safe, girl. A place the shadows of the Gu clan can never reach.
" He paused for a moment, as if savoring the words he was about to speak, then added with a note of quiet pride, "We are on our way to the city of Heli, a city the Gu clan could never match... it is the city of the Yu clan."
The journey to "Heli" took weeks. Weeks of traveling across vast plains, where the landscape transformed from the barren lands around Chang'an to rich green meadows. In these weeks, Yumi's wounds began to heal, not just the physical ones, but the psychological ones as well. She spoke with Akira, sharing stories and simple dreams.
They were two broken souls, finding healing in each other's company.
When they finally arrived in the city of "Heli," it looked like a world from a fairy tale. It was bustling, colorful, and teeming with life. There were no inspections at the gates, only smiling patrols. It was a free city.
"I apologize," Rio said. "But this is where my path ends. I have a family to take care of." He gave them a small pouch of money. "This will help you. Farewell."
"Finally!" Akira shouted, looking around in amazement. "I can't believe it! We escaped the tiger's den! You and I, Yumi, are the first to ever escape from a Gu clan prison!" He looked at her with a wide smile. "It seems we're stuck with each other.
It seems so.
I'm starving! I want to eat!"
In the restaurant, Yumi ate with a voracity she had never known. Every bite was a celebration of life. At the inn, she entered her room and tried to sleep. But she couldn't. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Ling Gu's face. After an hour of tossing and turning, she stood up and knocked on Akira's door.
He opened it, rubbing his eyes. "Yumi?"
"I'm sorry..." she said in a faint voice.
He looked at her and understood everything. "Come in. Sleep on the bed. I'll sleep on the floor."
The next morning, he woke her by shaking her gently. "Wake up, you cute fox. Time for work."
"What work?"
"Do you think a roof and food grow on trees? Come on, we're going to look for jobs."
As they walked through the bustling streets of "Heli," she asked him, "I remember you said your father had the blueprints for the palace. Where are they now?"
"In the grave."
"Oh, right... I want to go back for my mother and father.
Surely they are waiting for me."
Akira stopped and looked at her sadly. "Yumi... does Ling Gu know where they are?"
She fell silent. And she understood.
"I will take you back to them one day," he said quietly. "But not now. I'm sorry.
They entered a noisy tavern. Akira went to the bartender. "Tiger, lion, ant. Here. In the back," the bartender said.
"The big one."
"Upstairs."
They went up to an office on the second floor. A young man sat there, busy with papers. "We're here from Kaito. Looking for work.
The man looked at them and sighed. "Fine. You," he said to Akira. "What's your talent?"
"Blacksmith, skilled, and a planner."
"Good. Go to this address." He threw him a piece of paper. "And this child?"
"Good at observing."
"Now I'm hiring children too," the man sighed.
Do you know how to read and write?"
"Yes, sir."
"Go to this address."
They left the tavern, each holding a piece of paper that would determine the course of their new lives.
Akira suddenly hugged her. "You are a strong girl. But you must become stronger. Okay? Okay Now, we each go our own way.
I hope we meet again."
He turned and started to walk away. "Akira!" she called out.
He turned back.
"After I finish work... where do I go?"
Akira burst out laughing. "Ah, right! I was so focused on the dramatic exit, I forgot! We'll meet at this inn every evening!"
Yumi smiled a real smile for the first time in a long, long time. Her new life had begun.
