Chapter 40: An Oath on a Soul

[Start of Audio and Visual Recording]

The old man on the ground opened his hazel eyes. They were weak, but they held the same spirit as "Hong Min."

"...404...?" he said, his voice hoarse and barely audible. "Is... is that you?"

He looked around at the dead garden and the fake blue sky. He smiled a quiet, weary smile. "So... this is the real world after all. This is what it looks like."

He looked at me again, a glint of regret shining in his eyes. "Ah, 404... you don't know what happened to me, and I don't have time to explain. But I'll tell you one word... you are my friend. In my dreams, in this twisted reality, everywhere. You are my only friend."

He coughed, and droplets of blood came with it. "I'm happy. I achieved everything I wanted. I saw a part of the world, and I felt alive... even if it was an illusion. I don't care. But you... you are what I regret leaving most."

He raised his trembling hand in the air. "And for that... I will do this."

He took a deep breath, and his voice, though weak, carried a strange power.

"O, Prometheus! Demon of the 43rd Rank! Your son by a human woman, who has the right to summon you, requests the fulfillment of his only wish!"

Reality tore apart. The fake blue sky shattered like a pane of glass, revealing a black void where distant stars danced. From this void, a majestic entity descended.

He did not walk. He floated, seated upon an invisible throne. His body looked as if it were sculpted from living bronze, his muscles taut as if resisting eternal chains. His eyes were burning embers, and his long black hair floated slowly as if it were ash.

He looked at Hong Min, and a wide, manic smile, filled with joy and hunger, exploded across his face.

"My son! My own flesh and blood!" Prometheus said, and his voice was not like the grinding of continents, but a booming laugh that shook the world. "You have finally answered my call! Come! What do you ask? What treasure do you desire? What enemy do you want me to erase from existence?"

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

"I want..." Hong Min said, panting. "I want you to give 404 feelings. Make him feel."

Prometheus looked at me for a moment, then let out another, louder, more manic laugh. "Feelings? You want to grant them to this filthy entity? How generous of you! And what a fool!" His laughter suddenly subsided, turning into a theatrical seriousness. "I cannot, my son. With the deepest regret. Creating things from nothing is a divine ability, and you will not find an entity in this vast world who possesses it."

"But..." his head tilted, and his hungry smile returned. "I can give him the tool to learn them for himself."

In his hand, a necklace of light and smoke appeared, dancing and changing shape. "I will grant him the ability to enter the memories of the dead, and to experience every feeling they felt in their lives. There are two ways. The first is 'Consent,' for a living being to grant you permission to enter their soul before their death. This method reveals everything. The second way is 'The Trace,' to find an object that was very important to a dead person. But it will always remain fragmented." And if you find more than one linked trace, perhaps the memories will become complete.

Prometheus leaned forward, his eyes devouring Hong Min with their gaze. "But there is a price, my son... a beautiful price!" he said with ecstasy. "Every time he uses this ability, he will lose all his previous memories. His memory will be completely wiped, and he will live as if he were the person whose soul he entered, from birth until death. He will become them. And when the journey ends, he will return to himself, but he will have changed. His understanding of feelings will increase according to the strength of the memories he lived, but he will lose a part of 'himself' each time."

Prometheus looked at Hong Min, who was breathing his last. "Now decide quickly, my son! For my hunger is merciless, and I long for a taste of you."

Hong Min looked at me one last time and smiled a genuine, pure smile. "Yes," he said to Prometheus.

Then he directed his words to me: "My friend... I know you don't understand this word now. But I believe... that one day, you will."

He reached out his trembling hand and touched the glowing necklace.

In that moment, his entire body turned into a dust of light, was drawn toward the necklace, and then vanished.

Hong Min was dead. This time, 100%.

The necklace floated in the air before me for a moment, then faded.

And a new data screen appeared before me, one I had never seen before.

[Demonic Pact activated. New ability granted: 'Echo of the Soul'.] [Warning: Use of the ability will result in complete deletion of current self-data.] [Full permission has been received from the organic unit 'Hong Min'.]
