Chapter Interlude-lore
So to make a few things clear, first is that while other classes cannot learn skills relevant to other classes unless they originally have overlaps like mage and magic swordsman. However there are skills that you don't need a class to obtain. Any class can learn magic to some fault. However, getting past this wall is extremely difficult.
Classes obtain XP in accordance to fulfilling their classes function, like a farmer tilling the land or an alchemist making potions. The main cast does get a small amount of XP by training any relevant combat skills, but fighting and defeating enemies gets way more. XP cannot be gained if you don't have a good enough understanding of your class, it would be like if Jean didn't progress to a point where he understood how to be a dark blade he would stop leveling around level 25 or so. The same goes for advancing skills, if Jean didn't understand how to further his Swordsmanship he wouldn't be able to advance this.

Skills are a buff in addition to acknowledging one's abilities. Now you might think that Xion kinda circumvents this, and you'd be right. However it would be like downloading information right to your brain, yes she is a better swordsman but she's not as good as someone who got the skill naturally so she kinda has to grow into the skill. The continent they're currently in is called “Gethis” however few know this as maps of the continent are deemed very valuable.
