"And now... the Chainfather’s champion."
The chains around Alistair’s cage pulsed, low, resonant.
Then it came.
From the air itself, a hulking form took shape.
Chains unwound, links glowing with runes. Armor forged of layered black iron locked into place, each plate massive, etched in patterns of binding and punishment.
At the center of its chest, a literal cage of metal, hollow where its heart should be.
And within that cage, a single flickering core of light, trapped, pulsing.
Its head was a smooth helm, faceless.
Chains floated around its limbs, coiling and snapping with an eerie will.
[Enemy Identified: Chainbound Juggernaut]
Class: Chainforged Sentinel
Level: 23
Role: Heavy Tank / Battlefield Control
Core Abilities:
- Chain Lash: Mid-range pull and disruption attack.
- Binding Field: Creates a slow zone; movement penalties within radius.
- Juggernaut Stride: Temporary immunity to minor CC and movement impairments.
- Iron Bastion: Short-duration extreme defense boost.
Strengths: Extreme durability, zone control, suppression tactics.
Weaknesses: Low mobility outside of Juggernaut Stride. Vulnerable to sustained burst and positional plays.
Warning: High resistance to elemental effects and physical damage mitigation exceeds 45% in Iron Bastion state.
"Forty-five percent mitigation? Great. Why not give him a shield that blocks sarcasm while you’re at it."
The gods stirred, voices murmuring with interest.
Alistair’s stomach dropped.
"Yep. This is going to suck," Alistair thought grimly.
The Sentinel stepped forward, each footfall like a hammer on stone.
Chains writhed around it, lashed outward in slow arcs.
The Herald’s voice echoed:
"AND NOW... THE DANCE BEGINS!"
"One CHAINBOUND JUGGERNAUT, the Chainfather’s iron will given form!"
"One FANGED SHADOW, our slippery little blood-stained underdog!"
"ONE STAGE, ONE CHANCE, ONE CLOCK THAT CARES NOTHING FOR YOUR PAIN!"
He turned, smile sharp.
"And now... BEGIN."
The chains around Alistair’s cage flared once, then dropped away.
The arena remained frozen, every champion still locked mid-strike.
But here, within this space, the duel began.
Alistair exhaled.
"Right. No pressure. Just fighting a walking fortress while the gods take notes. Great."
The Sentinel moved, surprisingly fast for its size.
A chain lashed out, straight toward Alistair’s leg.
[Chain Lash Activated]
"Shit!"
He dove sideways, barely avoiding the snapping pull.
The chain smashed into the bone behind him, sending shards flying.
Alistair rolled, came up low, daggers gleaming.
[Kindle Spark Activated]
The spark flared, hit square on the Sentinel’s left arm.
No visible effect.
"Oh come on. You’re not even going to smolder? Rude."
[Bleeding Precision] triggered.
He grinned.
"OH? BLOOD ON THE CHAINS ALREADY?" The Herald exclaimed, putting a hand theatrically to his heart.
"LOOK AT THAT FANGS-AND-FIREWORKS STYLE! The Bloodmistress taught her pet some nasty new tricks!"
"But beware, little dagger, the Chainfather plays the LONG GAME. And CHAINS are patient!"
The Sentinel advanced, chains swirling.
It planted its feet, [Binding Field] flared out, a circle of heavy air.
[Binding Field Activated]
Movement Speed -30% within zone.
Alistair’s limbs dragged, like fighting through tar.
"Of course. A slow field. Because gods forbid I have fun."
He gritted his teeth, blinked out of the edge of the zone with a hard lunge.
"Buddy STAY OUT!" he shouted. The hellhound skidded to a halt at the cage’s invisible edge, growling, eyes burning.
"This one’s mine."
The Sentinel pressed forward, [Juggernaut Stride] engaged.
Chains flared, its steps grew heavier, faster, ignoring his stuns and slows.
Alistair ducked under a sweeping chain, blades slashing across the Sentinel’s right flank.
Sparks flew.
Minimal damage.
"Great. He’s got skin like a gods-damned vault door."
The gods leaned in, watching intently.
The veiled goddess of moons smiled faintly.
The stone giant rumbled low.
Even the Bloodmistress stood poised, eyes gleaming red.
Veydran remained still, chains drifting lazily around him.
"Judging every move. Fantastic."
The Sentinel lashed out again, double chains snapping from each arm.
Alistair darted left, barely slipped under on, caught the second on his blade.
CLANG.
His arms rattled from the impact.
[HP: 96 → 83]
[Iron Bastion] Activated.
The Sentinel’s armor gleamed, temporary defense surged.
"Shit. He’s bunkering. No point trying to hack through that."
Alistair backed off, eyes flicking toward the Bone Tribute countdown.
[Progress: 674 / 5,000]
[Arena Reset Countdown: 00:14:11]
"Clock’s still ticking. Gods, I need to finish this fast."
He grit his teeth, flared [Searing Vein].
[Searing Vein Activated]
Black-red fire burst from his hand burning the juggernut.
[Vesselbreaker triggered]
"Let’s see if you feel this."
The Sentinel staggered slightly, first sign of impact.
Alistair grinned wider.
"Not so stoic now, are we, Tin Man?"
And the fight continued, blades against chains, speed against raw force.
The gods watched.
The Bloodmistress whispered unseen.
The Bone Tribute counted down.
And Alistair fought.
One chain wrapped low, caught his ankle mid-turn.
[Chain Lash Success]
He was yanked forward, slammed into the Sentinel’s plated chest.
Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.
Pain flared through his ribs.
[HP: 83 → 67]
The Juggernaut raised both arms,
[Iron Bastion Activated]
Armor gleamed, runes burning brighter.
Alistair backed off fast, [Stonecoil Grasp] primed.
[Stonecoil Grasp Activated]
A thin root lashed out, caught the Sentinel’s left foot. 2 seconds root.
Not long, but enough.
"Your turn to stay put."
He surged forward, [Firebite] toggled active.
[Firebite Activated]
Daggers flared, +5 fire damage, Warmth stacking.
He drove a twin-strike into the Sentinel’s hip joint.
Bleeding Precision stacking.
Warmth +1.
"Not so invincible now, are we?" he hissed.
But the Sentinel didn’t flinch.
The root broke...
[Juggernaut Stride] reactivated.
It surged forward, chains lashing again.
Alistair grinned through the ache.
Outside the cage, the bloodbath resumed.
Alistair caught glimpses, Thessaly hammering a champion’s skull flat. Brimma’s spider form tearing through another line.
[Arena Reset Countdown: 00:13:39.]
[Blood Tribute Progress: 835 / 5,000.]
No time to lose.
The Sentinel staggered, black-violet veins pulsing beneath its armored arm where Vesselbreaker had landed.
Alistair didn’t give it a second.
He pressed in, dagger flaring with [Firebite], driving three rapid strikes across the Sentinel’s hip and ribs.
Warmth +2.
Bleeding Precision stacked.
A subtle flick in his vision caught his eye.
[Sentinel HP: 91%]
"Finally. Let’s peel the paint off this bastard."
But the Juggernaut was done testing.
Chains lashed wide, two from either side.
Alistair dove low, rolled right, caught a glancing blow across his shoulder.
Pain flared.
[HP: 67 → 54]
The ground shimmered again, [Binding Field] snapped into place.
"Of course. Round two of the tar pit."
Alistair triggered [Ethereal Phase], slipping out in a blur of smoke, barely clearing the zone.
"Try harder," he muttered. "I’m not dancing in your puddle."
"OOOH! A slippery one! The SHADOW VANISHES!"
"CHAINFATHER, your sentinel will need sharp eyes or sharper chains!"
"And the crowd LOVES a clever dodge dance on, little bloodblade!"
A chain hissed toward his face, fast.
He ducked, [Sword Bind] primed.
[Sword Bind Activated]
Blade caught the chain mid-strike, locked it for three seconds.
The Sentinel pulled, chain locked.
"Got you."
Alistair lunged, [Blade Tempo] triggered.
His offhand dagger struck clean across the Sentinel’s side.
Sparks. Bleed. Warmth +3.
[Sentinel HP: 84%]
"Not so indestructible, are we?"
The Juggernaut roared, a sound like iron grinding stone.
Juggernaut Stride pulsed again, chains broke free, movement surged.
"Time to move."
Alistair flipped back, eyes straining towards the moving numbers.
[Blood Tribute Progress: 961 / 5,000]
[Arena Reset Countdown: 00:12:44]
"Faster, Alistair. Or you’re going to be fighting this tin can when the dragon vanishes."
Another chain lashed, two, tight pattern.
No time.
[Darken Sight Activated]
Bands of blackness surged from his hand, coiling and smothering his enemy. The sentinel’s eyes flashed for a moment, a brief second before they clouded and a thin film of darkness overtook them.
"Let’s see you fight blind."
Alistair slipped inside the sentinel's guard, danced around the chains.
He cut low, dagger driving deep beneath the Sentinel’s arm joint.
Bleed triggered. Warmth +4.
[Sentinel HP: 78%]
But then the armor flared again.
Iron Bastion activated.
"Shit. He’s turtling."
Alistair backed off, not wasting hits on armor glistening with fresh wards.
"Patience. Let him burn it."
Outside the cage, the bloodbath surged.
Through the dark field he caught flashes, Brimma’s spider form tearing through a line of scaled warriors, Thessaly hammering a hulking troll into the ground.
Blood Tribute ticking. Pressure rising.
"You need to finish this. Now."
The Sentinel emerged from the dark, armor gleaming.
Chains lashed.
Alistair sidestepped left.
[Stonecoil Grasp Activated]
A root lashed from the bone beneath them, snared the Sentinel’s left foot.
One second window.
[Searing Vein Activated]
Blade plunged deep, veins pulsing black-violet again.
[Vesselbreaker] triggered.
[Sentinel HP: 71%]
"Bleed, you bastard. Bleed."
But the Juggernaut wasn’t done.
One chain smashed the root, another caught Alistair’s shoulder hard.
[HP: 54 → 41]
Vision blurred.
"Ow. Okay. Time to be clever."
Alistair ducked low.
[Summon Chittering Bats Activated.]
A swarm of bats exploded into the Sentinel’s face, wings clawing at its helm.
Alistair grinned.
"Enjoy your new friends."
He slipped left again, [Kindle Spark] off cooldown.
[Kindle Spark Activated.]
Bleed + Burn stacking.
Flare of fire ignited open wounds across the Sentinel’s arm.
[Sentinel HP: 66%]
He wasn’t sure who looked worse at this point. Probably him. But bleeding was a good start.
But the Juggernaut advanced, slower now. Bleeds ticking.
Chains swirling tighter, one mistake now could end it.
Alistair licked dry lips.
The Sentinel advanced again, slower, but chains swirling tighter, faster.
High above, the Herald’s voice rang out, amplified to be heard over the din of battle outside the cage.
"AND LOOK AT THEM MOVE!"
"The Bloodmistress’s darling dagger, swift as a lie, sharp as betrayal, dancing through LAW itself!"
"And the Chainfather’s sentinel, THE IRON-CLAD FIST OF ORDER, THE UNFLINCHING, THE UNBENDING, but can the immovable object catch the slippery little nightmare?"
"BET WELL, GODLINGS! THE WAGER BOARD IS ALREADY IN FLAMES!"
"Oh, what a lovely pairing this is, a predator and a prison warden, dancing on a floor of bones!"
"I wonder... which one will crack first?"
A ripple of amused murmurs passed through the observing gods.
"Oh great. Commentary. Because being judged by fifty gods wasn’t enough pressure already."
Alistair twirled his Dagger of Illumination in his right hand, Redcrystal Sword gleaming faintly in his left.
Chains lashed again, this time a crisscrossed pattern, aiming to box him in.
Alistair dove low.
[Ethereal Phase Activated.]
He vanished, five meters backward, reappearing in a swirl of smoke.
"Nice try. I’m not gift-wrapping myself for you."
The Sentinel shifted tactics, chains now arcing to strike the ground itself, sending shards and bone flying.
Alistair grimaced.
"Adaptive. Cute. But I can play too."
He darted left, [Thornspike] primed.
[Thornspike Activated.]
Spore Cloud triggered.
A poisoned thorn shot toward the Sentinel’s left leg, impacting just behind the knee joint.
A flicker of green spread,
The Sentinel staggered briefly, enough for Alistair to surge in.
He toggled Firebite active again, dagger gleaming red-hot.
Two quick strikes, one across the Sentinel’s side, one angled up beneath the cage at its core.
Bleed triggered. Warmth +5.
A faint pulse:
[Sentinel HP: 61%]
From above, the Herald laughed.
"OH, HE IS RELENTLESS! Alistair of the Bloodmistress fights with teeth and flame, a worthy hound for his mistress!"
Alistair snorted. "Hound? I’m offended."
He parried another chain strike, grunted as one clipped his ribs.
[HP: 41 → 33]
"Shit. Getting too low."
A faint pulse of heat at his shoulder, the Heartshard Pauldrons flared, runes igniting.
[Heartshard Pauldrons: Shield active → 15% damage reduction, 6 seconds.]
"Thank you, armor. About time you earned your keep."
Chains came again, fast, three in sequence.
Alistair danced left, rolled, parried one, caught the second on his sword.
The third grazed his side, pain spiked.
[HP: 33 → 21]
"Not good. Not good at all."
He gritted his teeth, triggered the ring.
[Ring of Minor Healing Activated.]
+30 HP.
[HP: 21 → 51.]
"Ahhh. Much better."
The Sentinel pressed harder now, chains moving in perfect synchronicity.
Alistair narrowed his eyes.
He cast [Bloodcall], a spectral tether snapped toward the Sentinel, latching onto its core.
[Bloodcall Activated]
A thin stream of blood shimmered along the tether, leeching life into Alistair’s veins.
Another [Kindle Spark] flared, shot into the open wounds.
Sentinel HP: 54%.
Blood Tribute ticked:
[Blood Tribute Progress: 1,313 / 5,000.]
Arena Reset Countdown: 00:11:32.
The Herald’s voice rang again:
"BEHOLD! Balance teeters on a knife’s edge! Will the Chainfather’s sentinel endure or will the Bloodmistress’s fanged shadow claim this prize?"
Alistair grinned through gritted teeth.
"Fanged shadow? Now you’re just flattering me."
Chains lashed again, Alistair ducked, rolled, flicked his dagger across a joint seam.
Bleed pulsed.
Alistair pivoted hard, blades flashing, just barely ducking beneath another chain sweep.
The Sentinel pressed forward, unyielding, tireless.
Its armor was battered now, bleeding black light, but still it came.
Alistair’s own breath burned in his throat. His limbs ached.
Blood Tribute ticking. Timer ticking.
He darted back, another roll, another parry, barely creating space.
"I’m not going to finish this in time. Not alone."
A grim smile twisted his mouth. "Damn it. I hate this part."
He shifted sideways, chains lashing past his shoulder, missing by inches.
Momentum bought. Just enough.
With a snarl, he shoved his hand into his dimensional pouch, fingers closing around cold, ancient metal.
"You better be worth the price."
He yanked it free, a tarnished token etched with the shape of a shadowed duelist.
A faint pulse of power thrummed through his palm.
[Item Activated: Token – Shade of the Forgotten Duelist]

Durability: 2/3
Effect: Summons a legendary Arena champion of the past to fight by your side for 60 seconds.
Warning: Token shatters after 3 uses.

Alistair exhaled hard, eyes gleaming.
He flicked the token upward, mana surging through his veins.
"Time to dance."
He grinned wide, "If this doesn’t work, I’m really out of ideas," he thought, baring his fangs.
And the token pulsed bright, summoning the forgotten shade.
