Ranni: “I gotta say, that was the first time learning about magic theory that I wasn’t put to sleep” she said with appreciation

  Sarah: “I understand what you mean, although I don’t think I’ve ever been that bored” she said, concerned with her lack of focus

  Ranni: “Well sure, but I mean that was actually fun!”

  Sarah: “hahah yeah that's true” she said with a smile “Mr Silva was really good and explained everything thoroughly so I understood it well, and I was genuinely impressed by Xarus’s knowledge of magic”

  Ranni scoffed in annoyance “it was alright I guess…I didn’t expect him to be smart, he doesn’t look the type”

  Sarah: “it was certainly a better answer than that first guy, Axel? I think?”

  Ranni: “Hey! His answer was great!” she said insulted

  Sarah: Why are you getting mad?” she asked confused by her outburst, but then she realised a possible situation

  Sarah: “Oh? Does someone have a crush on the dashing Axel?” she teased

  Ranni blushed a deep red and snapped her gaze to the floor “what!? No! Of course not!” she yelled, still staring at the floor.

  ???: “Ranni!”

  Before Sarah could tease her any further someone approached them, it was the blonde boy Ranni was talking to before the Magic theory class started.

  Relieved at the interruption Ranni urgently answered the boy

  Ranni: “Hayden! Hi!” she said quickly, her face still tinged red

  Hayden: “On your way to the cafeteria?” he asked

  Ranni: “yea me and Sa- oh yea this is Sarah by the way, Sarah this is Hayden”

  Ranni introduced the two of them

  Hayden: “Hi” he said

  Sarah: “hello” she replied, somewhat awkwardly

  Ranni: “What’s up?” she asked

  Hayden: “oh yea, I was wondering if you wanted to eat together” he said before turning to Sarah “You can come too if you want” he added

  Ranni: “Well I don’t mind, but what about your friends?”

  Hayden: “their doing other stuff right now and I don’t want to look like a loser who eats alone”

  Ranni: “eating with people won’t change that” she said, which earned her a “hey!” from Hayden, switching her gaze to Sarah “you ok with eating with this creep?”

  His expression changed from annoyed to confused “huh? Why am I a creep?”

  Casually Ignoring him, Ranni patiently waited for Sarah's answer

  Sarah: “I’m fine with that, it’s not like I have any friends to eat with”

  Ranni: “hey what about me!” she said, slightly angry

  Hayden: “we can be friends” he awkwardly threw in

  Ranni: “Creep, don't be so assuming” she said in disgust

  Hayden: “hey! I'm trying to be nice!” he yelled

  Ranni: “whatever nerd” she said with a sneer

  Hayden “you’re one to talk you Emerald Queen fangirl”

  Sarah: “Hey! What’s wrong with the Emerald Queen?” she asked defensively

  Hayden: “Huh?! Uh nothing? I’m just say-”

  Ranni: “yea, what is wrong with her? do tell in great detail” she said with a sinister smirk

  Hayden: “er… Nothing, forget I said anything” he chose the smart choice and retracted what he said.

  Ranni smiled with satisfaction before turning to Sarah excitedly with stars in her eyes

  Ranni: “So… you like The Emerald Queen as well? She asked expectantly

  Sarah: “Yea! Of course she’s amazing!” she said with admiration

  Ranni: “I know! she’s pretty much my Idol” she said her excitement growing

  They continued to fangirl over the emerald queen the entire trip to the cafeteria, ignoring Hayden whenever he tried to join the conversation which understandably left him in a sour mood.

  Ranni: “Crap!” she yelled out in annoyance, she had thought arriving later would be a good idea as she hoped that most students would have already gotten their food, leaving the line nice and short for their arrival, which was correct, but she had failed to consider the fact there would be no tables available big enough for their group, so they were currently standing at the front of the cafeteria, holding their food with nowhere to eat it.

  Ranni: "all the tables are taken" she said, hanging her head in despair

  Sarah: “What about with Xarus?” Sarah offered, pointing to where the boy was sitting.

  Ranni: “the annoying dude with the weird white and black hair?”

  Sarah: “wow, nice observation skills”

  Ranni: “it’s a gift” she shrugged “we aren’t really friends with him so It might be awkward”

  Hayden: “He’s the new kid right? Well besides you Sarah”

  Sarah: “Huh? Oh yea you did mention he was new” she said, turning to Ranni.

  Ranni: “well I just assumed since I had never seen him before, although I am surprised that our class got 2 new students”

  Hayden: “True, although the other classes might of gotten new students as well, not all schools teach grades 11 to 13, in fact the only other school that teaches 11 to 13 in Solair is Trearis academy" he finished his explanation and switched the discussion back towards Xarus “but yea it’s probably better we don’t sit with him, people are already spreading rumors about him”

  Sarah: “Huh? Why?” she asked

  Hayden pointed towards his eyes “it’s mainly because of his eyes from what I heard”

  Ranni: “Ugh, really? People can be so ridiculous" she said in disgust

  Sarah: “What's wrong with his eyes?”

  Ranni: “It’s a stupid superstition” she scoffed, looking towards Hayden to explain it.

  Noticing her gaze he sighed and explained “Those dark blue eyes of his are considered a taboo”

  Sarah: “What? Why?”

  Hayden: “well the superstition is that people with those type of eyes are actually Omens, and well it’s not exactly a secret that Omens are dangerous”

  Ranni looked over to where the boy in question was sitting, he was currently chomping on a muffin, he looked more cute than dangerous from her perspective.

  Sarah: “So what? People are saying he’s an Omen, just because of his eyes? That’s ridiculous!"

  Hayden: “Well I doubt it’s just because of his eyes, he does look shady and menacing regardless, I mean his hair is weird for one, he has that scar on his face” he placed his finger underneath his right eye, roughly where Xarus’s scar was “and the dark bags under his eyes don’t help him look friendly” noticing Sarah’s irritated gaze on him he quickly clarified “Not that I believe any of that!” he finished, laughing nervously.

  Judging people based on their appearance wasn’t exactly an uncommon concept, people had been doing it from the very beginning of history after all, like many others Ranni believed that concept was disgusting and was disappointed that it was still prevalent within the world.

  Sarah: “That’s stupid” she muttered

  Ranni: “Yea it is” she agreed

  Hayden: “Sorry” he apologised “I probably should have kept quiet, I didn't realise you knew him”

  Sarah: “It’s fine” she sighed “I probably would of heard about it eventually anyway”

  The atmosphere was awkward and tense and no one really knew what to say. Noticing a group leaving a table, Ranni broke the silence “Hey, there’s a free table over there, or there will be in a moment anyway” she said awkwardly, pointing towards the table she had spotted.

  Hayden: ‘Ah! Cool, let’s go” he said energetically, and started walking towards the table, it was clear he wanted to leave the awkward situation.

  Sarah soon followed with a conflicted expression, Ranni glanced over at Xarus one last time, he was still eating his muffin -is he a slow eater or that just a big muffin?" she thought before following Sarah and Hayden.

  Xarus was finishing his muffin when Axel appeared out of nowhere with an enthusiastic “Hey!” and sat down opposite to him, startled by his sudden arrival he unintelligibly blurted out a “Hergh” and choked on his last mouthful of blueberry muffin, coughing violently into his hand.

  Axel, witnessing the sight, panicked and offered him his water bottle, he accepted the water bottle and quickly drank from it, when he finally stopped choking he handed it back to Axel.

  Xarus: “Tha- *cough* thanks”

  Axel: “no worries, that was kinda my fault for surprising you suddenly” he awkwardly laughed.

  Xarus: “Nah, I’m just not used to people approaching me”

  Axel: “Hah, right ok”

  Xarus “...” a few moments of silence passed “did you need something”

  Axel: “ah! No, I just needed a place to sit, this place is packed today”

  Xarus: “This isn’t normal?” he asked

  Axel: “Nah” he paused, thinking for a brief moment “actually maybe?, I don’t usually come here for the morning break”

  Xarus: “Oh? Then why are you here today?” he asked

  The green haired boy stared at him for a few moments before answering “I guess I was just curious”

  Xarus: “about what?”

  Axel: “you” he casually said

  He blinked “Huh?” he gave Axel a blank stare “I’m not into dudes”

  “What?” Axel pondered his reaction for a moment before realising and quickly hurried to explain.

  Axel: “Not like that! Sorry I just meant you’re the new kid and I wanted to see what kind of person you were” he said blushing a deep red from embarrassment.

  he responded with a “Ah, okay good”, not knowing what else to say in this situation.

  After a few moments of awkward silence Xarus began the conversation again.

  Xarus: “There are other new people besides me aren’t there?”

  Axel: “well that is true but you seem different to them”

  Xarus: “Is that good or bad?” he cautiously asked

  Axel laughed and cheerily responded with “That's a good thing!”

  He did his best to hide the blush that had appeared when he praised him -wait… does that count as praise?- he thought.

  While Xarus debated whether or not that was praise, Axel continued the conversation, asking “what kinda things are you into?”

  Xarus: “what? Oh um… I play a lot of video games…”

  Axel, his eyes lighting up, energetically responded “Oh really!? What games? I play a lot of “Disc” It's my favorite" he proudly proclaimed.

  Xarus: -He talks fast- he thought, struggling to keep up with him “I’ve played “Disc” but mainly for the story, I haven’t played much of it’s multiplayer”

  Axel nodded his head “Fair Fair, it does have an awesome campaign, but the multiplayer is really fun as well, we should play sometime!” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pen “Uh… you got any paper?” he asked.

  Xarus: “Oh um, I should” he said, reaching into his bag and pulling out his notebook, opening to an empty page he ripped out a piece of paper almost flawlessly and handed it to Axel.

  Accepting the paper Axel started scribbling down something, once he confirmed that there were no errors he returned the paper back to Xarus.

  Axel: “those are some weird scars” he muttered under his breath, noticing the many scars of various shapes and sizes that covered Xarus’s hand.

  Xarus: “Yea” he shrugged “I’ve been told that before”

  Surprised that Xarus had heard him he quickly apologised “Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to blurt that out” he laughed awkwardly

  Xarus: “It’s fine, it’s fine” he reassured him while inspecting the words that were written on the paper ‘Oh! Is this your username?”

  Axel: “yea it is, friend me on Engine, alright?”

  Xarus: “oh.. Sure, but we could of done this through the app” he said, raising his phone and pointing at the engine app “you didn’t need to write it down on paper”

  Axel: “ah well whatever it’s not a big deal”

  “Briinggg!” a loud ringing sound filled the room, signifying the end of morning break.

  Xarus: “Oh! We should go”

  Axel: “ah! Yes, uh… what subject is next?

  Xarus: “Maths”

  Axel: “Ugh, ok cya later then” Axel hurriedly got up from the table and began rushing off towards the exit of the cafeteria.

  Xarus: “You know we’re in the same class right?” he called out to the boy

  Axel stopped dead in his tracks and turned to face Xarus “Oh yea! We can walk together then” he said, quickly walking back over to Xarus.
