Chapter 44 - Bow and arrows are not effective?

The boar was rushing mad! It's a mohawk boar, and its mouth is frothing.

The boar charged at one of the barricades. The boar was not injured in the barricade. But its foot was stuck in the gaps.

  REEEEE

As the opportunity came, Civ shouted. “Arrows! Shoot it with arrows!”

Kivrah, Kes, and Civ, who had the bow and arrow, shot the boar.

The boar starts screaming as it's getting shot.

  REEEEEE

Their ear starts ringing. But they did not stop shooting the boar. Until -

The boar tried to scream again -

  RRREEEEE—

  It stopped.

One of the arrows they shot hit the right eyeball. Killing it after it got hit.

They did not react first. When they were sure it was not moving, Kivrah and the rest went out to harvest their hunt.

Checking the damage up close, Civ was a bit disappointed. The arrows hit the ground instead of the boar. If they were able to aim it properly. They will be able to kill it much faster. Or else, the boar might rampage and reach the wall.

Even his shot was not accurate either. The scream from the boar stunned them, and they lost their focus to aim properly.

‘We need to practice both weapons next time.’ Civ planned to add this to their exercise routine in the morning.

After the attack, they fixed the barricade that was damaged. Then have the rest of the tribe butcher the meat.

Civ rest at the hut. Kivrah followed him also.

Kivrah heaved a deep sigh. “Civ, you saw it right.”

Civ looked at his Father. “What is it Father?”

“The arrows, we were unable to aim them at the boar earlier.”

Hearing his Father is disappointed also, feels bad. But this is a part of learning.

“It is fine Father, we just created that weapon. What we need to do is to improve from now on.” Civ gave words of encouragement. He knows that his father was not disappointed in the weapon, but in the skills he showed earlier.

Kivrah smiled. “You are right. We need to improve it.”

As they are talking, Kivrah looks at the rest of the strings on the roof.

“Son, we can still make more bows right?” Kivrah asked.

“Yes Father. With that tendon stings, we can make more bows for all of the hunting group and you.” Civ explained.

Kivrah enthusiastically nodded and asked. “Then the next bow you make, please make it for me.”

Civ smiled and was more than willing to do it. “Leave it to me Father. I will make a separate bow and arrow for you.”

Their discussion ended there. The camp was starting to cook the boar meat. They started the feast at the command of the tribe leader.

The night went by fast, and the morning came.

In the morning, the first Civ to wake up was Vel. “He Vel, wake up! We need to join the hunting group.”

“Sun Goddess is not yet awake. Please let me sleep more.” Vel comfortably curled next to the campfire.

“Oh! I think all of the tendon strings were already dry. I guess I’ll make it myself.” Civ starts walking to the hut.

“Wait Civ! Hehehe lead me the way. Show me where the hunting group is.” Vel quickly stood up and ran towards Civ.

The duo went to the back of the cave, and the hunting group was already there. As a part of morning exercise, they stretch.

“Luk! Come here!” Civ called Luk, who was just finished stretching.

“Yes!” Luk jogged towards the duo.

“Help Vel understand the stretching,” Civ commanded. Luk nodded, but Vel was dumbfounded.

“Hey hey hey Civ. I thought you needed me here because you want someone to work on the bow and arrows. Why am I going to do the same thing as them?” Vel walked back.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Civ grabbed his shoulders and teased him with a smile. “You want to use bow and arrow right?!”

  “Yes.”

“Then follow what the hunting group will do.” Civ firmly replied.

Vel was on the verge of crying, replied.“I guess I don’t have a choice. But Civ, who will make the other bows?”

Civ looked at Arsh, who was still stretching. Vel followed Civ’s gaze.

  “Arsh?”

“Yes, she knows what you all knew.” Civ confidently replied.

Vel also acknowledges Arsh. She was his mentor before. But she did not expect that Arsh still had time to learn everything that he was doing under Civ.

Vel slumped his shoulder and replied. “Alright.”

Before he let Luk train Vel, answered Vel. “Vel. Trust me, this is for you. Once you're able to train your body, you can use weapons much more easily.”

Vel looked at the gentle smile coming from Civ, and he just nodded in reply.

When Vel tried the bow yesterday, Civ noticed that the boy was having a hard time pulling the string. He might have a never-ending curiosity. But being strong and capable of using weapons is also needed. When the worst-case scenario happens. Civ wants everyone to have the capacity to escape and defend themselves. He can only accomplish it by starting with the hunting team. Depending on the hunting group's result, he can adjust it to fit the rest of the tribe.

The group finished their stretching. Preparing to jog around, Civ called their attention.

“Everyone! I want you to drink water first.” Civ placed a big jar and two bowls he placed above the flat stone.

The group was already thirsty since last night. So they have a mouthful of water. Then start their day with the exercise. Civ did not join in today’s jogging. Instead, he focuses on making arrowheads. He was able to make 50 right before their exercise ended by using stone flakes.

‘I’ll let Vel teach the rest of the crafting team for this.’. Civ wants to make the arrows, but he still needs to do some research on other things.

The group started walking back, sweating and exhausted.

“Anyone needs to pee, especially males. Come here.” Civ told the team.

Curious, Horm, and the rest went to Civ.

Horm asked. “I need to pee now, Civ, what do you need?”

Before everyone replied, Civ placed an empty jar in front of them.

“I need to collect your pee.” Civ confidently looked at them dead in the eye.

“HUUUUUHHH” everyone, including the females, replied in unison.

“What do you mean you need our pee?!” Pil replied in confusion.

Civ knows this will be their reaction, so he confidently replied.

“I need it for my next item that I will be making.”

Vel quickly grabs the jar and relieves himself in the corner away from the crowd. The rest of the boys followed.

“Thank you everyone. Once it is ready, I will explain it to you all.” Civ tried to seal it with palm leaves. Then placed it in a shady tree where sunlight can’t pass through.

After everyone left to do their daily task, Civ moved to his next project. Now that they have an area where they need to gather smaller resources in large quantities. They need containers.

Bringing a palm leaf. He split it in half. Next is he lay the half of the leaf flat in the ground. Then break each leaflet into one left and one right. Alternating each leaflet. The leaflets are in crisscross positions, intersecting each other. Then he starts weaving it. One up, one down, until all of the leaflets were woven.

Civ was busy working. Vel, who is working on making the bows, saw Civ on the other side.

When Vel saw Civ dragging a leaf, he thought that he was working on the cordages in his free time. But when he started breaking the leaflets, he abandoned what he was doing and ran to Civ.

“Oh Chosen One. What is it you are doing?” Vel excitedly smiled in front of Civ. He looked at the shape and color of the palm leaf. It was a new idea for Vel.

Arsh also noticed it and went to the back of the cave.

“Hey Civ. What is this?” Arsh picked the first woven leaf he made.

The reason why both of them are acting this way is because they want to know its purpose and process of making. Even though Civ was able to teach them how to do it. I the past few days, the group was so busy that they did not have enough time to ask Civ for improvements. Knowing what Civ is doing ahead will help them understand the process much faster.

“Give me a moment to explain.” Civ rolled the spine of the leaf, and then he secured the bottom by tying it like a messy bun.

Since Kivrah will still ask him what the name will be, he will name it right away.

“This is a basket!” Civ revealed.

“Basket? What does it do?” Arsh asked.

“Simple.” Civ put some stones and carried them.

  “Like this!”

Vel's eyes widened. While Arsh tilted her head.

“Right. If we gather the berries or the garlic yesterday, we can have someone pick them.” Vel was excited about this item.

“You are right Vel. I noticed yesterday that we are all carrying small items. If we can place it like this basket, we can hold everything in one place. Just like a jar.” Civ further explained.

Getting the idea of water, Arsh went silent, but she responded with a nod.

Vel quickly asked Civ to teach him how to make it. Arsh just observes since Vel is already doing what she wants to ask. Within thirty minutes, the two of them were able to learn how to make the basket.

After making it, they let it dry in the sun. The two students happily left while Civ checked the inventory.

Inside the cave, he starts checking the number of tools and crafted materials. So far, the stone knives and spearheads are too many right now he needs to halt the production. Cordages were also plentiful. But Civ needs a bigger diameter for future use. What they need right now is materials for arrow making and more sinews. That weapon needs to be mass-produced. They will need more than enough to make sure that they can practice and also spare in case of shortage. Compared to a spear and an atlatl, which they can assemble as fast as possible. Once the bow is broken, they need time to make it. Hence, making enough spare bows is needed.

Civ head is tigngling for all of the thinking needed for this camp to be protected. But it is worth the pain. Their tribe is starting to be lively, and that is proof that he is progressing positively.

‘Enjoy the small improvements also.’ Civ felt happier and looked for his Father.

His Father was assisting the tribe in the middle of the camp. When they talked, he discussed with his Father what materials were needed to produce in the next few days. Kivrah agreed as he was already thinking about it last night.

“So Son, are we going back to the South later?” Kivrah casually asked Civ, who was caught off guard.

“To the South? Why?” Civ does not have plans to leave now, as he wants to help Vel make the bows.

“Gathering the onyons and the white ones. What was that called?” Kivrah tried to recall it.

  “Garlic.” Civ replied.

“Right. Garlic.” Kivrah remembered the name.

“We can, but why do we need to return. Do you want to make the soup again?” Civ curiously asked.

“Yes! I want to taste the warm water again!” Kivrah explained.

Civ tried to hold himself to laugh at his Father’s expression. Kivrah was like a puppy that wanted to be petted.

“Alright. Let’s go later. I know Arsh will be fine with that.” Civ can’t help but feel defeated. The Tribe leader was already asking. They can’t do anything about it.

Before noon, some from the hunting group and the firewood group joined the journey. They bring two bows. The arrows were placed in the basket. As they came near where the spices were growing, they heard a squeaking. Multiple squeaking.

Someone from the firewood team shouted. “Green rabbits!”

When everyone noticed, it was too late.

  They were surrounded!
