Everyone looked at Civ.
“Deeper?” Horm was confused and concerned.
Digging this dirt is not an easy task.
Aside from being hard, the tools they have right now are not enough to move a significant amount of dirt.
“Yes. I know you are concerned Horm. But with this. We have more ways to soften up this dirt.” Civ smiled as he tapped slightly on the basin using his foot, and there was a ripple.
“Water?” Horm and everyone around answered.
“Right! Let me show you.” Civ scoop up some water using a wide-open jar. He poured it into the dug dirt that they created last time with Horm.
Next, using a shoulder blade bone of a boar, he starts scooping the area. Every scoop he did, he was able to collect a large amount of dirt.
“Amazing!” Horm exclaimed.
“See. Now let’s start making these holes. Let’s dig deep until our head is the only thing showing in the hole.” Civ explained.
Everyone went silent to the goal Civ given to the group.
“I don’t think we can do it Civ,” Vel answered.
“Don’t worry. I can show you a method.” Civ showed them the ribs of boars, other shoulder blades, and the other two jars.
Every hole, there will be 3 people who will work. The first one will work on breaking the soil. The second person will work on scooping the dirt away from the hole. Then for the last person. He will be the one who will collect water and dispose of the soil that will be removed from the hole once it gets deeper.
For the current group, they are able to group up to 3 teams.
The team was led by Civ, Horm, and Vel, respectively.
When they started working. Horm and Vel were surprised by the method. The soil was easily removed from the hole. Making the digging process much faster.
“This is great Civ!” Vel shouted.
“Hehehehe, I’m glad it's effective,” Civ replied as they started working on the whole.
The system was so effective that after 1 and a half hours, they were able to dig 5 ft (1.5 m.) deep with a 6 ft (1.9 m.) wide. They were so entranced in digging that they did not notice that they dug that dip.
“I think that is deep enough.” Said by one of their tribesmen.
Hearing it, the one who was working on the pit stopped their digging. Only to notice that they will be having a hard time climbing back.
Horm was easily climbed back due to his height. At the same time, Civ and Vel were able to climb back by attempting multiple times.
As they tried to wipe off the dirt in their hands, they planned to go to the river afterward.
But before they can leave.
“Civ, why are we digging this deep?” This question was already in Vel’s mind from the start. He wants to quench this curiosity.
“In short, we can make it as a defensive tool.” Civ grabbed one of the pointy sticks that Vel brought. Since both sides are pointed, he dropped it vertically. Penetrating the soil while standing.
Civ looked at Vel. “What do you think will happen if the boar falls here?”
Vel imagined it to his mind, and he gasped. “So we can kill them by falling here!”
Horm and others also quietly listened. Some of their hands went sweaty.
“You are right Vel. You are worthy of being my apprentice!” Civ praises his student.
“Appren- what?” Vel wants to know what Civ did.
“Ignore what I said. Since you already understand its purpose. We will need to make more of this around the camp.” Civ set the group's goal for the day.
The group was excited to work on this and answered. “We understand, Oh Chosen One.”
Feeling the concern and expertise of Civ, they cannot help but acknowledge and praise him. Civ just let it slide. Since they are genuine.
But one of the people from the group has a question that he cannot understand.
“Oh Cho- Civ. What if the boar was able to jump to this hole?” The crowd nodded in concern for their tribesmen.
“Thank you for asking. For that, we will need to do something about the hole.” Civ dragged some dried whole palm leaves. The length of these palm leaves was longer than the hole opening. He crisscrossed the leaves and put some tree leaves.
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Now it looked like a pile of leaves. Then Civ stomped it. Making the leaves fall into the hole.
“Ohhhhh!!!” This time, everyone understands the demonstration.
“We need to make them run on this hole so they will fall into the spikes!” One of the crowd commented.
Killing by gravity. That is the main function of a pitfall trap. One of the common traps with high efficiency. Killing the prey without them realizing it.
Civ did not expect that adding water when digging would be this much faster. This idea came into his mind when he and Horm had a hard time digging the first batch of holes.
He was planning to make it initially, but since the soil was hard, he decided to use a different style of trap.
The group finalizes the pitfalls by installing the spikes. After that is leaves to serve as camouflage. They stabbed two visible sticks at the edge of the hole. Civ his Father first introduced the trap, then he let his Father explain it to the whole tribe.
When Kivrah saw it, he couldn’t help by cover his mouth from gasping.
‘Even humans will die in this hole if they accidentally fall here.’ A cold sweat ran from Kivrah's back. He shakes his head by looking at this trap.
“I admit my son. This is a cruel method. But since the purpose is to protect the tribe. I’ll inform the tribe how to avoid these holes.” Kivrah nodded with a commanding presence.
Civ also agrees with his Father’s sentiment. He did not want to do it. For him, this world wants to suppress and consume them. He will do all possible options and things to avoid it from happening.
When his Father left, the group finished 4 more holes. They were stopped by breaking the tools they had. The group rests for the day 2 hours before sunset. They refresh themselves by washing at the river. Vel, on the other hand, collected the dirt they were able to dig and brought it to the side of the cave. Then he followed the group to wash himself.
When the night came, Kivrah, Civ, and some of their tribesmen were sitting at the campfire near the cave. Earlier, Civ asked his Father to sleep outside. The tools, weapons, and produced materials are starting to take up a large space inside. Aside from that, Civ already stored a lye solution to dehair that boar’s skin. It will be dangerous for them to stay inside the cave for a long time and breathe in. Kivrah understood and preferred to sleep outside of the cave since there was a campfire here.
As the crackling sound of burning wood was heard. Horm and his tribesmen started talking about the adventures outside of the camp. Looking at the smiles and laughs, Civ starts feeling that he is at home.
‘Home?’ Civ pondered. It was fortunate that rain is not that frequent in this location. But what if it rains? Thinking about it. He decided to discuss it with the firewood team to gather some thicker timber tomorrow. He is also expecting that they can finish making the pitfall traps early morning. So he can move on to another project.
Since they are outside, as a habit, Civ looked up to the night sky. Even though he did not understand the constellations in this part of the universe. He tried to remember some stars that were shining brighter than the others.
‘If that star still shines in a couple of days. I can start there and use it for the future.’ Stars in the night sky, for him, were one of the best tools he could use. Especially when traveling.
Kivrah noticed his son looking up at the sky. He asked. “What are you looking at the sky son?”
“Oh Father, nothing much. I just appreciate the night sky.” Civ honestly answered with a smile. Still looking at the sky.
“Did our ancestors travel at night?” Civ curiously asked.
“No son. Even now, most of our tribesmen are afraid to do anything at night. It always reminds them of the giants.” Kivrah sadly answered as he stoked the flame.
Kivrah pauses a moment.
“But you know son, our tribe has gone happier right now. Even at night, they are willing to work. Do some things to learn. They are more motivated than ever. The fear of the night for them is slowly fading.” Kivrah looked at his son, smiling.
“It's all thanks to your effort.”
Civ smiled back. “It's not only me, Father. Everyone contributed to all of these improvements.”
Kivrah did not reply, and both he and Civ looked at the night sky again. As they scan it, the smile turned serious. The three moons in the night sky are starting to form. A symbol of ultimate destruction. A reminder of their constant struggle.
Civ felt his body tremble. It's not him, but a memory sunk deep in his thoughts.
‘Living in this moment felt like an insect with an invisible lid.’ It's sad. But with the opportunity to change this cycle, they need to deal a heavy blow to these monsters.
Kivrah also noticed the change in the mood of his son. He wanted to talk about it. But he stopped himself.
‘It is not time yet.’ Kivrah whispered in his mind.
Civ and Kivrah did not talk about night-related history. They conversed with their tribesmen. They retire for the night, sleeping next to the campfire.
The next day, they woke up feeling refreshed. The first thing they saw was Ras and Pil already walking full of energy.
“Hello Civ, Tribe leader.” Both of them bowed.
“Hi. How are you feeling now?” Kivrah inspects both of them. There are still spots of injury that are visible on their body. But it was not that dangerous.
“We are feeling better, Tribe leader. The Shaman advised us to rest for today. She will check on us tomorrow.” Pil answered.
“Great. You both are precious to the tribe. Please take care of your body seriously right now.” Kivrah's forehead wrinkled.
Pil and Ras blushed. For them, getting the tribe leader worried makes them feel concern. Because for them. The tribe leader’s life is the top priority. Everyone in the tribe should sacrifice themselves in exchange for leader's safety. But their tribe leader is giving them attention like this. They can’t help but appreciate the concerns.
“Thank you tribe leader. We will follow your command.” Both of them replied.
Kivrah also thinks the same way. But with the attitude his son is showing toward the tribe, he realized that everyone’s life is important. More important than ever.
He remembered, as a kid, in one instance. The tribe leader of one of the tribes that they came across sacrificed most of his men, and even women and children. He ran away with full of injury as the leader witnessed the giants feasting on his people one by one. The person died after telling the story.
As a leader, he did not want it to happen to their tribe. Let alone leave them at the mercy of these monsters.
Right now, Kivrah decided to discuss the plans with the group leader for today. Sitting around with him were Arsh, Civ, Horm, and Vel. Vel was promoted as a leader of the crafting team yesterday at Civ’s request. Which Kivrah approved with full trust.
The discussion was brief. Same as yesterday. Build the pitfalls and produce the items needed to make it. Also, Civ mentioned to Horm the materials he needed. Everyone did not question it since Civ will only show it to them once finished.
The morning went by, Civ and some of the hunting group worked on the pitfalls. They were able to finish 4 more pitfalls that were placed on the south and east side of the wall next to it.
But as they were walking back to the entrance of the camp, Safi stood straight.
“I hear steps from the north!”
