Chapter 26 - Unity and barricades

Everyone bowed with devotion. They were moved with the determination of the Chosen One. Now he is asking everyone for help. They want to contribute to their saviour.

Civ was surprised by the reaction and the question about the campfire. He was thinking of two reasons behind it. First, they are careful of handling fire as it was a blessing from the Sun Goddess, and they do not want to disrespect it. Second, they thought that they could only create one campfire. Since Civ said that they can do more campfires, this gives them the courage to face the darkness of the night.

Kivrah sighed, but it was relief. “Civ since you convinced everyone, please let us know what we need to do.”

He was not angry at Civ. But leading a tribe as big as theirs, he could not fathom what everyone would do if he commanded them. Their tribe might run in different directions. This will cause a wipeout when the Tuanir comes. It was a blessing to him that his Son was smart and willing to help and guide the tribe.

After their conversations, Civ did not waste time and let everyone know what to do. He divided them into three teams. First is the one who will dig the soil. The second is the one who will install the wood. The last team will manage the cutting of the pile of wood in half.

He also installed two campfires. One is on the west and the other is in the east. Seeing this delighted his tribesmen.

“The camp is brighter now in the night!”

“This is the blessing of the Sun Goddess! She gave us the light even though she is asleep!”

What Civ realized was that the crowd was happy that they could see at night. They were also able to walk around the camp using the campfires installed.

‘Hmmm, hopefully I can find the materials needed for that thing. If I can collect it. It will give more light around the camp at night.’ While thinking about it. He was already in the middle of the camp. The wood was currently being processed and cut into two pieces. Unnecessary branches were removed. Civ right now lets each team do their task while he oversees the project. While the rest are busy, Civ started collecting the branches. He removes smaller branches. What he has is a 4 - 6 inch. thick sticks. They are also quite long. Using his stone axe, he started cutting them to around 3 - 5 inches long. After that, he sharpens it like a pencil.

Then he gets a long branch with 3 inches thick, with a 4 - 5 ft length. He placed the pointy tip on this branch and tied it.

‘This will be my second line of defence. The barricade.’ Civ continued to work on it. After an hour was able to create 6 barricades.

“Oh Chosen one. What is that you are making?” Someone from the crowd that was gathering tasked him to bring the wood to the east side, asked him.

Beads of sweat were coming from Civ’s face. He was in a trance on making as many as he could.

“Oh Chosen one?” the kid tapped his shoulder.

Tapping his shoulder sent his consciousness back to reality.

“Oh My-! Sorry, I was focused on working on this. ” Civ wiped his face since sweat started running in his eyes. When he got a clearer view, the kid who was talking to him was Vel.

Seeing him face-to-face, the boy was around 4.9 ft. He has clear white skin.

“What was your question again kid?” Civ massages his waist as he starts feeling some strain from the things he is doing.

“Sorry, Oh Chosen one, if I disturb you. But can I know what you are making?” Vel wants to know, but he cannot look at Civ’s face. However, Civ saw that Vel's eyes were fixated on the barricades.

Civ smiled and revealed it to Vel. “Well, this is what I call a barricade!”

“Barricade! What does it do?” Vel's eyes were shining.

Civ was quite happy someone from their tribe was like this.

“Let me explain it to you. Since the boars are always running to attack their enemies, I decided to make this. Hoping they will -”

“Charge on the barricade and kill them! This is amazing!” Vel interrupted as he understood the purpose.

‘Oh boy. Looks like Arsh was right.’ Civ looked at Vel, who was looking at the barricade.

“Can you help me with this? I will teach you how to do it.” Civ offers Vel the chance to learn it first.

“Really! Please command me, Oh Chosen One. I will faithfully listen to your instructions.” Vel touched his heart and slightly bowed to Civ.

“Civ, please call me Civ. Now listen, as we need to make this quickly and as many as possible before the Sun Goddess wakes up.” Civ give Vel the details. The boy carefully listens and asks any questions he has not understood.

“For now, please make the pointy tips, and when you have enough, you can start working on making the barricades.” Civ handed Vel the stone axe.

Vel accepts it and tightens his grip on it. “I will Oh- Civ. I will not disappoint you!”

  Civ nodded and stood up.

Seeing how everyone helps in making this wall, he cannot help but be grateful. Grateful that he has a tribe that is willing to help him in times of danger. If the tribe did not agree with him earlier, he did not have a choice but to follow the idea of his father.

“The great thing is the wall is starting to form.” Civ was amazed by how quickly they are building it. The more hands that help, the faster it will be finished.

“Since I have someone willing to work on the barricade, I can move on to the next defense line.” Civ pickup 3 pointy sticks, a boar skull, and a stick with fire in it. Then he looked for Horm.

“Hey Horm, follow me to the north side of the camp.” Civ continued to walk towards the north part of the and Horm followed him.

They went outside the wall. Civ started a mini campfire. Enough to give them light outside.

“Hey Civ. What do we need to do?” Horm was a bit afraid. But since his friend was working on this big thing (the wall). He feels they need to do something important here.

“Please help me dig some holes here. About my arm's length.” Civ instructed Horm.

Horm wants to ask Civ about it, but looking at his friend, who started digging, he also started digging.

With the limited time that they have, Civ and Horm were able to make a few holes around 2 - 3 feet deep.

They tried to make as many holes as they could. Within an hour, they made four holes. These are placed 3 feet away from the wall.

“This is enough for now. Hopefully, we can make more tomorrow.” Civ and Horm go back inside the walls.

While walking, Civ, due to his habit, looks up at the dark sky. The night is dark, but it makes the night sky beautiful. Stars are twinkling. Some of the stars are bigger, some of them are smaller.

‘These stars. I hope to study them one day.’ Civ aside for future use of these constellations. He hopes to learn about them and appreciate these stars.

‘The night sky has its own beauty.’ Civ was hoping to see the night sky every night starting the next day.

But when he ran his eyes to the sky, he saw the moons of this planet. One of the moons was blue, the other was green. They overlap with each other, and the third moon is showing its shape.

‘Tuanir. This is also a question we need to answer.’ Civ put his hands on his back while looking for some answers. They might need to make more sacrifices if they need to survive.

When he and Horm went back inside the wall. The team was almost done. Kivrah saw his son and Horm. He called Civ while Horm left to help the east side finish the wall.

“Civ, where were you earlier?” Kivrah was not worried but curious.

“We went to the north side of the wall. I want to check if we can make additional structures to defend our camp.” Civ honestly answered his Father.

“Alright. We have an issue right now. Even though we can gather as much wood, it looks like this is still not enough to cover the whole camp.” Kivrah helplessly informs Civ.

Civ estimations were not quite as accurate as he expected. But in general, they were able to cover the north, east, and west sides of the camp. In his mind, this should be enough.

He looked at the remaining wood and pondered.

“I think we can make a different type of wall on that side.” The south side of the camp had already been explored by them. Civ is sure that there are no boars in that area. They can put on a lesser defence on that side. It is still better to put something there than to let his confidence deceive him.

Civ picks up some sticks and demonstrates to Kivrah what needs to be made. Vel was also there since he was busy working on the barricades.

After Civ finished the demonstrations. Both Vel and Kivrah nodded.

“I get it Civ. I’ll let the team work on it.” Kivrah left. On his left side, Vel was staring at Civ.

“Civ, can I know how you think of these things?” Vel did not hesitate to ask.

When Vel initially saw the stone knives, it piqued his interest in what was possible. From the stone knife to the stone spearheads, he tried his best to make sure he could improve these items. But these things never materialized if the Chosen One did not think of it. Not only is he their saviour, but he is creates things they did not think or dream of.

Civ looked at Vel. He sees this kid in a different light. Not only is this kid smart, but also full of curiosity. Vel asks the right questions to him, teaching him more easily.

Civ smiled, “I ask myself how I can help our people and make sure their lives will be easier. From that, I can come up with solutions.”

“Help and an easier life. Thank you Oh Chosen one. I will keep that in mind always.” Vel respectfully bowed to Civ.

Civ accepts the respectful bow from the kid. He has many things to do in the future, and if he can have someone help him do the other simpler things. He hopes he can accelerate the quality of life for their tribesmen.

Everyone finished their assigned tasks by almost midnight. They are all exhausted and rest by the campfires near them.

Civ also tidied up the pointed wood they created, and it was many.

‘Hopefully, this is enough to cover all sides.’

He looked around, and everyone was asleep already. He stoked some firewood on each campsite so there would be enough warmth for their people. Seeing that everyone is rested, he walks back to the cave to rest.

“Oh Chosen one, you are not yet asleep?”

“Ahhh!!! $&@(#$@” Civ cannot help but spit Earthly foul words as he was startled. He looked at his back, and it was Shaman Mashu.

“I am sorry Shaman, I did not see you.” Civ feels his chest and his heart are still racing.

“I am sorry also, Oh Chosen One. I should have called you first when you were stoking the fires.” The Shaman admits also since it was also her fault.

“Since you are going to rest, I will make it short.” The Shaman's joyous tone was replaced by a serious and divine tone.

“Oh Chosen One. The Sun Goddess was also awake earlier.” Hearing this sentence, Civ focused his attention on the Shaman.

“What happened after Shaman?” Civ asked while he straightened his body.

“While I was sleeping earlier, she whispered to me and said this.” The Shaman looks Civ in the eyes.

  “Be careful on all sides.”
