Chapter 12 - The Eight O’clock Dinner

The Lost Vampire System Chapter 12 - The Eight O’clock Dinner

Jareth’s eyes fluttered open. What happened? This was the question that was going through his mind. He found himself sprawled out on the floor. He sat up placing his hand on the back of his head where he got hit. There didn’t appear to be a wound which was good. He looked around the room trying to remember what happened. A moment passed as he started to remember what happened before he went unconscious.

“The egg!” Jareth said with anxiety as he quickly got up and ran to the bed which caused his vision to briefly go blurry.

Once the blurriness disappeared, he saw that the egg was still on the bed. He breathed a sigh of relief. I don’t think anyone came into this room, Jareth thought as he grabbed his backpack from his suitcase. He placed a shirt on the bottom of the backpack. Next, he placed the white translucent egg into his backpack and placed some clothes on top of the egg, hiding it. He then zipped up his backpack sitting on the bed beside it.

“Dang,” Jareth muttered. “That would’ve been bad if I had woken up and it was gone. He reached into his pocket pulling out the small shiny rock. “At least your still here. I am supposed to smash you when I am in danger.”

“Bracelet of Dominion is 21% bonded with the system. The user is now awake. The system syncing has been returned to normal.”

I forgot about that, Jareth thought. I wonder what you are supposed to be. Am I granted dominion over something?

Just then, he heard the door unlocking. Jareth’s head snapped toward the door as it opened. Damion and Henry walked in. Damion entered first, a big smile on his face like he owned the place. Henry, on the other hand, came in more shyly, glancing around the room. Damion noticed that his things were on the middle bed and went over to what he presumed was his. Henry, seeing that his things were on the left bed, went over to his and began to unpack.

“This place is cool,” Damion said aloud. Everything is top of the line compared to where I live. I mean, where I live isn’t bad; it just needs to be updated. What about you Jareth?”

“I lived in a broken-down apartment on Earth. The tenth floor with no elevator.”

“Dang,” Damion’s smile went down softly. “What about you Henry?”

“I lived on a tier F planet owned by the Frostwood Faction in the Becifer solar system. I had to scrounge to survive. I just hope that while I am away for three years here, that they’re bellies will be fuller without my mouth to feed.”

Damion’s smile twitched as his mood dropped upon hearing the sad background of his two roommates.

“Eh,” Damion stuttered trying to change the subject. “Oh, look at that, It’s 7:50pm. We have ten minutes until dinner and I don’t think we want to miss this one.”

He jumped up ready to leave. Jareth put the rock in his right pocket and grabbed his backpack following Damion. He was told by his father to always keep the egg close to him, so that is what he is going to do. Damion briefly gave Jareth a side-eye when he noticed the backpack but chose to ignore it. Henry got up as well, but just like Damion, he took none of his things. The three of them walked out of the room closing the door behind them. They made a left and another left coming out in the elevator area. After pressing the button, they entered and the doors closed. The number on the elevator continued to decrease until it hit one.

  DING

The elevator chimed then opened revealing a huge crowd of people in the lobby area.

“Whoa!” Damion said with a shocked expression as he tried to exit the elevator. “A lot more people than I thought.”

“Well,” Henry chimed in raising his voice so they could here. “There is around 800 boys and 800 girls, plus the total of like 45 VIP kids. There is around 1,645 students in this building alone. Just be glad that the other nine buildings have their own dining hall.”

“Is there really 1,645 students in this building!” Damion practically yelled trying to speak louder than the other students.

“Yes!” Henry yelled back. “Just be glad you aren’t at military base 1. I heard that the base is the size of multiple large cities from before the war combined.”

  “Is it really?” Jareth asked.

“Yes!” Henry responded. “There is 17 billion humans and around 340 million of them are old enough for the first-year students of the draft. Times that by three because of the second- and third-year students. The first 5 military bases are the biggest with Military base 1 being insanely large. This is the first year that the remaining of the factions that weren’t in the draft joined, so five more mega military bases had to be built to accommodate the new students, getting us to 100 bases. Military base 6 which is where we are to military base 95 are all the same size. We can talk about it more later. I think I see your sister.”

Henry pointed through the crowd. Jareth looked to see his sister Mia glancing through the crowd like she was looking for someone. Jareth immediately made his way over to Mia. Damion and Henry followed since they didn’t know anybody else. Mia saw her brother pushing through the crowd towards her and she made her way towards him. They met up in the middle.

“Do you know what is supposed to happen?” Mia asked.

“I don’t know,” Jareth responded. “I took a nap so if they announced anything then I missed it.”

  “You took a nap?”

“Unfortunately,” he replied. “It wasn’t planned.”

Damion and Henry walked up behind him.

“Hey, Mia,” Damion said with a charming smile on his face. “She’s your sister, right Jareth?”

“Yes,” Jareth replied. “Almost a year apart but born in the right time to enter the school together.”

Just then the rest of Mia’s party walked up behind her. Axel, Hudson, Hunter, and Keira.

“What was your name again?” Mia asked Damion.

“Damion Youngblood,” He responded. “I take it our two groups will be working together because of this already established relationship between siblings.”

That’s when Axel shuttered. His mother had told him to stay away from the Youngbloods, but here he was, hearing that he would be working together with one.

“There you guys are!” A voice to the right of Jareth said.

He turned his head to see Madison, Emma, and Hannah squeezing past people to get to them. Emma and Hannah were wearing their same equipment that they wore for the tests. This included Hannah wearing her mask so they still don’t know what she looks like.

“Why are you wearing your equipment?” Mia asked them

“Because we will be fighting each other for the position in the dining hall,” Hannah replied in a snarky tone. “I’m going to make sure that at least one of us looks strong to deter the other groups.”

“Fight?” Mia said but just then the speaker system turned on making 3 consecutive beeps.

“Hello, everyone!” The voice said happily. “Welcome to the annual dining hall fight. This announcement is being broadcast to all ten first-year buildings on this base. The rules are simple. Whoever is the strongest deserves to be at the top, where all the best accommodations are. Humanity needs strong individuals to fight against the Lyracken. The best deserve the best to stand against our common enemy. If you believe that you are the best, then you have to earn it. Don’t worry, a week after this event, formal challenges will open. You can only challenge once per week, and you can only be challenged once per week. Try not to destroy the place too much; it can be a hassle for our repair crew to fix everything. After the event, your schedule will be sent to your Forwatch, and don’t worry; the people you tested with will be with you in your homeroom class. Now with that being said, Let the event…begin!”
