Prologue

Many years ago, the summer of 1936….

It was a warm summer day with the sun beating down on the green pasture as the two young woman opened the gate and ran happily through the grass towards the hill, startling several grazing sheep as they ran by.

“Beat you to the top.” The taller woman shouted to her companion.

“That’s not fair, sister,” the other woman shouted back, “You have longer legs, you can run faster!”

Soon they both stood panting at the top of the hill.

“Look at this view,” the taller woman exclaimed, “We can see for a hundred miles!”

They admired the view for several minutes, then the shorter woman lay down on the grass. “I’m tired after that run up here,” she said, “Come and lie down with me sister.”

Soon they were both lying on the soft cushion of grass with a gentle warm breeze blowing over them, and soon they were asleep.

A booming sound from the sky woke them up. They looked up to see dark clouds rapidly approaching with lightning flickering from within.

They clambered to their feet as rain started falling.

“Come on, sister, we better get back home or we’ll be drenched,” the shorter woman said.

  Stolen story; please report.

She started making her way down the hill, but after going a short distance she turned around to see her sister was not behind her, but was still standing at the top of the hill.

“Sister, come on !” she shouted.

“I’m coming,” the girl called, but she had taken only three steps when there was a blinding flash of light and a huge crash.

The woman halfway down the hill was thrown off her feet. She lay on the ground dazed for several minutes before coming to her senses.

As she clambered to her feet the storm moved away and the sun came out creating a beautiful rainbow which arched over the hill.

“Sister, where are you?” the girl called.

  There was no answer.

She made her way back to the top of the hill, fearing the worst that her sister had been struck by lightning, but when she reached the top there was no sign of her sister, just some scorched grass where the bolt of lightning had hit.

“Sister, where are you?” she shouted over and over as she frantically ran around the top of the hill, but her sister was nowhere to be found.

She had to get help. She ran as fast as she could down the hill and through the pasture towards the house in the distance.
