Chapter 25

Sweat beaded on foreheads, the scent of exertion hanging heavy in the air, a stark contrast to the polished chrome of the training hall. The rhythmic *thwack* of sparring practice echoed into silence as Ronnan clapped his hands, the sound sharp enough to cut through the lingering tension. His rare smile, a flash of white teeth against tanned skin, didn’t quite reach his eyes, yet held a hint of something akin to pride. The team, a kaleidoscope of relieved exhaustion and barely contained excitement, shifted restlessly.

“Alright, listen up,” his voice boomed, each word resonating with the authority born of countless battles. He paused, letting the silence settle, before continuing. “Basic training. Done. You’ve bled for it, sweat for it, maybe even cried for it. I’ve seen the grit in your eyes, felt the raw power in your attacks.” He gestured, his arm sweeping across the faces of his team. Robert’s jaw was tight, a flicker of doubt in his usually unflinching gaze. Freddie, ever the optimist, bounced on the balls of his feet, a grin splitting his face wide enough to showcase a missing molar. Emma’s knuckles, white against the hilt of her training blade, spoke volumes. Even stoic, Luis shifted his weight.

Ronnan’s smile vanished. “But this,” he tapped a finger against his chest, “this is just the foundation. Being a Guardian? It’s not about surviving the course. It’s about surviving what comes next.” He activated the holographic display, the list of exercises shimmering into existence–a tailored gauntlet for each one of them. “Tailored to your weaknesses. Designed to break you. And rebuild you, stronger.”

A tense silence followed. Robert took a step forward, his posture ramrod straight, the confidence simmering beneath the surface, palpable. His voice was quiet, steady. “Thank you, Ronnan. For pushing us.”

Ronnan nodded, a brief softening in his gaze, a hint of something akin to respect. “Prove you deserve it. Prove you’re ready for anything.” He turned, his silhouette sharp against the bright training hall, then vanished.

The door hissed shut, leaving the team in stunned silence, the weight of Ronnan’s words hanging heavy in the air. Then Freddie let out a whoop, his celebratory yell breaking the spell. “We did it! ”

The relief was a tidal wave, a rush of exhilaration washing over them. Cheers erupted, a symphony of triumph and excitement that filled the training hall. Even Sophia, her usual quiet intensity momentarily forgotten, allowed a small, almost imperceptible smile to play on her lips. The room pulsed with the raw energy of their shared accomplishment, the kind of moment that made all the grueling training and sleepless night’s worth it.

Joel stepped forward, a smile plastered across his face. “Everyone. Me and Emma have a surprise for you.”

The team turned to him, their curiosity piqued. “A surprise?” Leo asked, his eyebrows shooting up. “What kind of surprise?” Emma crossed her arms, a sly smile tugging at her lips. “The good kind. If you could just follow us to the lab, we’ll show you.”

Freddie’s eyes lit up. “A surprise in the lab? This better not be another one of your ‘let’s test this experimental gadget on Freddie’ things.”

Joel smirked. “Relax, Freddie. You’ll like this one. Promise. Besides, that was one time. ”

The team exchanged curious glances but followed Joel and Emma out of the training hall and down the sleek, futuristic hallway. The walls were lined with glowing panels, and the faint hum of the base’s energy systems filled the air. They reached the elevator; the doors sliding open with a soft whoosh. As they stepped inside, Freddie leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. “Okay, seriously, what’s the surprise? You’re killing me here.”

Emma shook her head, her smile widening. “Patience, Freddie. You’ll see.”

The elevator descended, the numbers on the display ticking down until they reached the lab level. The doors opened, and the team stepped out into a brightly lit corridor. The lab doors hissed open as they approached, revealing a high-tech workspace filled with holographic displays, workbenches, and prototypes at various stages of completion.

Robert raised an eyebrow as they entered. “Alright, we’re here. What’s the big reveal?”

Joel and Emma exchanged a glance before walking over to a large white cover draped over something in the center of the room. Freddie’s eyes narrowed. “Is that what I think it is?” Joel’s grin widened. “You bet it is.”

With a dramatic flourish, Joel and Emma pulled the cover away, revealing a sleek, black-and-blue suit mounted on a mannequin. The suit was a masterpiece of design, its surface shimmering faintly under the lab lights. The team’s emblem — a stylized shield with a lightning bolt—was emblazoned across the chest.

Freddie’s jaw dropped. “No way. Is that… our team suit?” “Yes, it is,” Joel said, his voice brimming with pride. “Fully equipped with everything we might need. Built-in comms, reinforced armor, climate control—you name it, it’s got it.”

Luis let out a low whistle, stepping closer to inspect the suit. “This is insane. You guys designed this?”

Emma nodded, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “We’ve been working on it for weeks. Joel handled the tech specs, and I worked on the materials and functionality. It’s lightweight but durable, and it’s designed to enhance each of our abilities.”

Robert reached out, running a hand over the suit’s surface. “This is incredible. You two really outdid yourselves.”

Freddie was practically bouncing on his heels. “When do we get to try them on? Please tell me we get to try them on.”

Joel laughed. “Relax, Freddie. We’ve got one for each of you. They’re customized to fit your powers and style.”

Sophia, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up. “This is… impressive. But are they battle-tested? We can’t afford any malfunctions in the field.”

Emma nodded. “We’ve run every test imaginable. They’re ready.”

Leo clapped Joel on the back with a grin in place. “You guys are the best. Seriously. This is next-level.”

Joel shrugged, trying to play it cool, but his grin gave him away. “Yeah, well, someone’s gotta keep this team looking good.”

As the team gathered around the suit, their excitement was palpable. For the first time, they weren’t just a group of teenagers with powers—they were a team, united by a shared purpose and now a shared identity.

Robert looked around at his teammates, a sense of pride swelling in his chest. “This changes everything. We’re not just Guardians anymore. We’re a unit. And with these suits, we’re ready for whatever comes next.”

Freddie pumped his fist in the air. “Let’s go save the world!” “From what exactly?” asked Sophia

“Umm from Emma’s next failed experiment,” Freddie said teasing

  “Hey!” Emma responded

The others laughed, the sound echoing through the lab. For a moment, the weight of their responsibilities faded, replaced by the simple joy of being together. They were still kids, still learning, but they were also something more. They were a team. And they were ready.

With their basic training complete, they began taking on small missions around Imperial City. The city was a sprawling metropolis of gleaming skyscrapers, neon lights, and bustling streets. While most citizens used their powers for everyday tasks—lifting heavy objects, speeding up commutes, or enhancing communication—the Guardians were tasked with handling situations that required combat expertise and quick thinking.

Neon lights streaked across the chrome skyscrapers of Imperial City, painting the streets in vibrant hues of blue and pink. The air buzzed with the hum of hover cars and the chatter of late-night shoppers, but the Team wasn’t here to enjoy the view. They were here for their first actual mission, and the weight of it hung heavy in the air.

Robert stood at the front of the group, his hand resting on the hilt of his energy baton. His face was calm, but his heart raced beneath his chest plate. This is it, he thought. No more simulations. No more drills. This is real. He glanced over his shoulder at the team, their faces a mix of excitement and nerves. “Alright, listen up,” he said, his voice steady but firm. “Just like in training. Freddie, make sure they don’t escape. Leon and Luis, you’re on crowd control—make sure no civilians get hurt. Joel and Emma, Block them from the sides with Freddie. Sophia, keep an eye on their movements with your telepathy. I’ll take the one on the second floor. Let’s move.”

Freddie cracked his knuckles, a grin spreading across his face. “Finally, some action.”

Sophia rolled her eyes, her arms crossed. “Focus, Freddie. This isn’t a game.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Freddie said, waving her off. “I got this.”

The team moved into position, their movements fluid and precise. The target was a high-end tech store, its reinforced glass windows gleaming under the neon lights. Inside, shadowy figures darted between the displays, stuffing gadgets into bags. Robert signaled for the team to hold, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the situation.

“On my mark,” he whispered into his communicator. “Three… two… one… Go!”

Freddie raised his hands, his telekinesis creating shimmering barriers that sealed off the store’s exits. “I’ve blocked the escape routes,” he said, his voice tinged with pride. “No one’s getting out now.”

Joel and Emma moved in next. Joel’s sonic scream shattered the store’s front windows, sending a wave of glass cascading to the ground. Emma quickly manipulated the shards, forming them into a makeshift barrier to protect the civilians. “Every- one, stay back!” she called, her voice calm but commanding. “We’ve got this under control!”

Leo and Luis darted through the chaos, their super speed making them a blur. Evacuating shoppers out of the store safely, Sophia’s voice came through the team’s communicators, calm and steady. “Three thieves down, one trying to climb the fire escape. Freddie, he’s yours.”

Freddie’s grin widened. “On it.” He sprinted to the back of the store, his telekinesis propelling him up to the rooftop in one fluid motion. Below, the thief was scrambling up the fire escape, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Freddie perched on the edge of the roof, his eyes glowing faintly as he focused his power. “Well, hello there,” he said, his tone teasing.

The thief froze, his eyes wide with panic. Without warning, he thrust out his hand, and a jagged spear of ice shot toward Freddie. Freddie barely flinched, his telekinesis deflecting the ice with ease. “Nice try,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “But you’re gonna have to do better than that.”

With a flick of his wrist, Freddie sent a shockwave of energy rippling through the air. The thief lost his grip on the ladder, tumbling to the ground below. Emma rushed to his side, her hands glowing faintly as she checked for injuries. “He’s alive,” she said, her voice tight with relief. “Just winded.”

Freddie landed beside her, his grin fading as he looked down at the unconscious thief. “He’s… gonna be okay, right?”

Emma nodded, her expression softening. “Yeah, he’ll be fine. You did good, Freddie.”

The final thief surrendered without a fight, his face pale with defeat. The team regrouped outside the store, their breathing heavy but their spirits high. The crowd that had gathered erupted into applause, their cheers echoing through the streets.

Robert looked around at his team, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Nice work, everyone. That’s how you handle a mission.”

Freddie pumped his fist in the air. “Yeah! We’re officially awesome! but I got to sit down for a bit, that running is not for me. ”

Sophia rolled her eyes again, but there was a hint of a smile on her face. “Don’t let it go to your head, Freddie.”

Leo slung an arm around Luis’s shoulders. “I call dibs on the next mission. That was way too much fun.”

Luis shrugged him off, but there was a glint of amusement in his eyes. “Focus, Leo. We’ve still got a lot to learn.”

As the team was headed back to base, an alert came through on their communicators just as the team was finishing up at the scene. Robert’s bracelet buzzed, and a holographic message flashed in the air: “URGENT: Power Grid Sabotage at Energy Hub Delta-7. Immediate assistance required.”

Freddie groaned, slumping onto a bench. “Seriously? Can’t we get, like, five minutes to breathe?”

Robert shot him a look, already strapping on his gear. “You can breathe later. Right now, we’ve got a job to do.”

Sophia stood and adjusted her gloves. “Let’s move. The longer we wait, the worse it gets.”

The team quickly traveled and arrived at Energy Hub Delta-7 within minutes. The facility was a sprawling complex of towering generators, humming transformers, and glowing conduits. Smoke billowed from one of the control rooms, and the sound of alarms echoed through the air.

Robert scanned the area, using his X-ray vision, his eyes narrowing. “Alright, listen up. Freddie, you’re on barrier duty—seal off the exits so they can’t escape. Joel, Emma, you’re on system restoration. Get the power back online. Leo and Luis flank them and keep them distracted. Sophia, use your telepathy to track their movements. Let’s move.”

Freddie raised an eyebrow. “Barrier duty? Really? I was hoping for something a little more… exciting.”

Robert smirked. “Trust me, you’ll get your excitement.” The team split up, moving swiftly through the facility.

Freddie raised his hands, his telekinesis creating shimmering barriers that blocked the exits. “Alright, no one’s getting out now,” he muttered, a grin spreading across his face.

Inside the control room, Joel and Emma got to work on the damaged systems. Joel ripped open a jammed access panel with his super strength, while Emma’s fingers danced over the holographic interface, her sonic frequency manipulation recalibrating the damaged circuits.

Meanwhile, Leo and Luis darted through the facility, their super speed making them a blur. Leo’s voice echoed through the halls as he taunted the saboteurs. “Hey, over here! Bet you can’t catch me!”

Luis rolled his eyes but stayed focused, his serious demeanor a stark contrast to Leo’s playful antics. “Keep them distracted, but don’t get cocky,” he warned.

Sophia’s voice came through the team’s communicators, calm and steady. “Two saboteurs heading toward the east exit. Leo, Luis, intercept them.”

Robert, Freddie, and Sophia moved to confront the saboteurs directly. They found them in a narrow corridor, their powers already flaring. One of the saboteurs, a tall man with glowing hands, hurled bolts of energy at the team. The other, a woman with the ability to manipulate metal, tore pieces of the wall apart and sent them flying.

Robert dodged an energy bolt, his voice sharp. “Freddie, shield! Now!”

Freddie raised his hands, his telekinesis creating a shimmering shield that deflected the metal projectiles. “Got it! But I can’t hold this forever!”

Sophia stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the saboteurs. “Let me handle this.” Her telepathy reached out, probing their minds. “You don’t want to do this,” she said, her voice calm but firm. “Stand down.”

The male saboteur hesitated, his glowing hands flickering. But the woman snarled, her eyes blazing. “Nice try, kid. But you’re not getting in my head.”

She hurled another piece of metal, forcing Freddie to rein- force his barrier. “Uh, guys? A little help here?”

Robert stepped forward, his expression determined. “Don’t worry, I got your back” copying Freddie’s telekinesis. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the metal projectiles flying back at the saboteurs.

The woman dodged, but the man wasn’t so lucky. A piece of metal clipped his shoulder, and he stumbled, his energy bolts fizzling out.

Sophia seized the opportunity, her telepathy pressing harder, inflicting pain in his brain.

The man groaned, clutching his head. “Fine, fine! We give up!”

The woman glared at him, but before she could react, Fred- die’s telekinesis wrapped around her, pinning her arms to her sides. “Not so tough now, huh?” he said, grinning.

Robert stepped forward, his voice firm. “You’re both coming with us. Let’s go.”

As they escorted the saboteurs out of the facility, Joel’s voice came through the communicator. “Power’s back online. We’re good to go.”

Freddie let out a relieved sigh. “Finally. Can we go home now?”

Robert chuckled, clapping him on the shoulder. “Nice work, Freddie. You held your own out there.”

Freddie grinned, his earlier complaints forgotten. “I Know!, did you see what I did there? If only the kids from Professor Kael’s class could see this, They be jealous.”

Sophia shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. “I told you to not let it get to your head. Let’s just get these guys to the authorities before they try anything else.”

As the team regrouped and handed the saboteurs over to the city’s security forces, they couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride.

The team arrived back at their base, the adrenaline from their mission slowly fading as they stepped into the common room. Freddie flopped onto the sofa with an exaggerated groan, his arms sprawled out like a starfish. “I need to take a breather,” he said, his voice muffled by the cushion. “All that running and holding up that shield totally wiped me out.”

Luis smirked, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. “Weakling,” he said, his tone dripping with teasing.

Freddie’s head snapped up, his eyes narrowing. “Say that one more time. I dare you.”

“Weakling,” Luis repeated, his smirk widening.

“Oh, that’s it! Come here!” Freddie launched himself off the sofa, and the two of them tumbled to the floor in a mess of limbs, wrestling and laughing. Robert, Joel, and Emma watched from the sidelines, chuckling at the spectacle.

Leo shook his head, a grin tugging at his lips. “Kids,” he said, rolling his eyes.

Sophia sighed, her arms crossed. “Honestly, you’d think they’d have more energy after a mission.”

The soft hum of the holo-screen filled the room as Emma flicked it on, bathing the space in a pale blue glow. The local news channel flashed to life, displaying footage of their recent mission at the energy grid—smoke rising from the plant, their blurred figures darting through the chaos.

“Today, a group of new Junior Guardians successfully thwarted a sabotage attempt at the city’s central power plant,” the anchor announced, her voice crisp and polished. The camera cut to slow-motion shots of their team in action, though their faces were partially obscured by tactical gear. “Among them, reports confirm the presence of a Power Replicator—a rarity in the Guardian Program.”

The screen shifted to a man in a sleek, official-looking suit—Bryan, his name tag read, “Specialist in Guardian Program Oversight.” He adjusted his cuffs, his expression carefully neutral.

“Thank you for having me,” Bryan said smoothly.

“Tell us,” the anchor leaned in, her tone dripping with faux concern, “is it wise to allow a Power Replicator into the Guardians? Given… their history?”

Bryan hesitated—just enough to make it seem like he was choosing his words carefully. “I reviewed this team’s entry into the program weeks ago. And if I’m being honest?” A pause. “No. It wasn’t wise. The High Council seems to have forgotten the Replicators’ rebellion against the Dominion. This feels like a disaster waiting to happen.”

Sophia’s hand shot out, slamming the console. The screen blinked off, plunging the room into abrupt silence.

No one spoke for a beat too long.

  Then—

“Don’t listen to that garbage,” Leo growled, cracking his knuckles like he wanted to punch the now-dark screen.

“Yeah, dude,” Luis added, throwing an arm around Robert’s shoulders. “They’re just pissed ‘cause you actually did something while they sit around talking crap.”

Robert hadn’t moved. His back was to them, shoulders tense under his suit. Then, slowly, he turned—and flashed a smirk that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“I’m fine. Thanks.” He shrugged, rolling his neck. “Takes more than some talking head to bring me down.”

Freddie whooped, punching the air. “That’s what I’m talking about! Screw ‘em!”

But beneath the bravado, the words lingered like a stain. Disaster waiting to happen.

The main console suddenly beeped, cutting through the noise. “Incoming call from High Counselor Avery Patel,” the automated voice announced.

Robert straightened his posture and answered the call. “Hello, High Counselor,” he said politely, his voice calm and composed.

The holographic image of High Counselor Patel appeared, her sharp features and piercing gaze instantly commanding the room. “Good day,” she said, her tone formal but not unkind. “I’m just calling to congratulate you all on your first missions. You’ve done well.”

The team exchanged relieved smiles, the tension in the room easing slightly. “Thank you, High Counselor,” Robert said, speaking for the group.

Patel’s eyes flicked over the team, and a small smile appeared on her lips. “And I see you’ve already got your team suits. Impressive.”

Freddie couldn’t help himself. He stepped closer to the screen, a big grin on his face. “Aren’t they cool? Joel and Emma made them!” He struck a dramatic pose, showing off the sleek black-and-blue suit. “We’re basically superheroes now.”

Patel’s smile faltered as her eyes landed on Freddie’s wrist. Her expression shifted, her brow furrowing. “What is that you’re wearing?” she asked, her tone sharp.

Freddie blinked, confused. “Uh… my suit?” he said, glancing down at himself.

“No,” Patel said, her voice firm. “On your wrist. What is that?”

Freddie looked down at the Aetheric band, his heart skipping a beat. “Oh, umm, it’s ah—” he stammered, his mind racing. Robert stepped in smoothly, his voice calm and confident. “It’s a little present that Emma made for us. A form of team pact, right, Emma?” He glanced at her, his eyes silently urging her to play along.

Emma, catching on immediately, nodded with a bright smile. “Yes, I thought it would be a nice gesture. A symbol of our unity.”

Patel’s gaze lingered on the band for a moment longer, her expression unreadable. Then she nodded slowly. “I see. Carry on, then.” The call ended abruptly, her hologram flickering out.

The room was silent for a moment before Freddie let out a long breath. “That was close,” he said, slumping back onto the sofa.

“Good job coming up with that lie, Robert,” Joel said, clap- ping him on the shoulder. “Quick thinking.”

Sophia, ever the serious one, crossed her arms. “We need to be more discreet about the bands. If the High Counsel finds out what they really are…” She trailed off, her expression grim. “Yeah, it would be a lot easier if we could just take them off,”

  Luis muttered, rubbing his wrist.

Freddie groaned, running a hand through his hair. “Did you see the look on her face? She was not buying it.”

Robert shook his head, trying to lighten the mood. “Let’s not think about that right now. How about we go up to the roof and relax? Clear our heads.”

Leo perked up at the suggestion. “That sounds good. I could use some fresh air.”

The team nodded in agreement, the tension slowly easing as they made their way to the roof. The night air was cool, the city lights stretching out before them like a sea of stars. For a moment, they could forget about the Aetheric bands, the High Counsel, and the weight of their responsibilities. They were just a group of teenagers, laughing and joking under the open sky.

Freddie leaned against the railing, a grin spreading across his face. “You know, for a bunch of ‘weaklings,’ we’re not doing too bad.”

Luis rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his smile. “Don’t push it, Freddie.” overlooking the glittering skyline of Imperial City, Robert broke the silence. “He is right. We’ve come a long way,” he said, his voice filled with quiet pride. “And to think all of this happens because I wanted to help a shy kid at school.”

Freddie grinned, leaning back in his hands. “Yeah, still can’t believe we stalked him” He Looked at his Aetheric band on his wrist. “I wonder when this thing will work?” He asked with curiosity on his face.

“Who knows” said Leo said. The others nodded, their expressions a mix of determination and hope.

Through it all, they learned to rely on each other, their bond growing stronger with every day that passed. They still had a long way to go, more to learn, but for now, they were together. And that was enough.
