Chapter 23

The room buzzed with energy as the team gathered for another session. Ronnan stood at the center, his arms crossed and his expression unreadable. Today’s focus was clear: mastering their powers for combat. The team had made progress, but two members still lagged behind—Freddie and Emma. Ronnan had decided it was time to address their struggles head-on.

“Alright,” Ronnan began, his voice cutting through the chatter. “Today, we’re focusing on precision and control. Powers are useless if you can’t use them effectively under pressure. Freddie, Emma—you’re up first.”

Freddie’s stomach dropped. He hated being singled out, especially for his telekinesis. He could feel the weight of the team’s eyes on him, their expectations pressing down like a physical force. Emma, standing beside him, looked equally uneasy, her fingers twitching nervously at her sides.

Ronnan activated a holographic simulation, the room trans- forming into a battlefield littered with debris and enemy drones. “Your objective is simple: clear the field and neutralize the targets. Freddie, you’ll use your telekinesis to create barriers and move obstacles. Emma, you’ll manipulate the environment to trap or disable the drones. The rest of you, observe and learn.”

Freddie stepped forward, his heart pounding. He raised his hands, focusing on a piece of rubble in front of him. It wobbled slightly before falling back to the ground. He tried again, his frustration mounting as the rubble refused to budge.

“Focus, Freddie,” Ronnan said, his tone firm but not unkind. “Your power comes from your mind, not your muscles. Stop overthinking it.”

Freddie took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment. He thought back to the times he’d been called weak, useless, a failure. The words had always held him back, but now he pushed them aside. When he opened his eyes, the rubble lifted smoothly into the air, hovering in place.

“Good,” Ronnan said, a hint of approval in his voice. “Now, use it.”

Freddie hurled the rubble at an incoming drone, smashing it to pieces. A small smile tugged at his lips, but it was short-lived. Another drone appeared, and this time, his focus wavered. The rubble slipped from his grasp, crashing to the ground.

“Again,” Ronnan said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Freddie gritted his teeth and tried again. This time, he took out two drones before losing control. It wasn’t perfect, but it was progress.

Next, it was Emma’s turn. She stepped forward, her hands trembling slightly as she faced the simulation. The drones were fast, their movements erratic. She focused on the ground beneath them, trying to manipulate the matter to create traps. But under pressure, her powers faltered. The ground shifted unevenly, and the drones easily avoided her attempts. “Emma,” Ronnan said, his voice calm but insistent. “You’re overcomplicating it. Start small.”

Emma nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration. She focused on a single drone, her hands moving in precise motions. The ground beneath it shifted, forming a pit that swallowed the drone whole. A minor victory, but it was enough to boost her confidence.

“Better,” Ronnan said. “Now, scale it up.”

Emma took a deep breath and expanded her focus. The ground rippled like water, creating a series of traps that disabled multiple drones at once. She was still shaky, but the improvement was undeniable.

The rest of the team watched intently, their expressions a mix of encouragement and curiosity. Robert stepped forward, his voice steady. “You’re getting there, both of you. Just keep at it.”

Freddie glanced at Robert, a flicker of gratitude in his eyes. “Thanks, man. I just… I don’t want to let everyone down.”

“You won’t,” Robert said firmly. “We’re a team, remember? We’ve got your back.”

Emma nodded, her expression determined. “We’re in this together. Let’s keep going.”

Ronnan allowed a small smile. “Good attitude. Now, let’s see how you handle a real challenge.”

He activated a more advanced simulation, the battlefield now teeming with enemies. Freddie and Emma worked together, their powers complementing each other. Freddie used his telekinesis to create barriers and hurl debris, while Emma manipulated the environment to trap and disable the drones. It wasn’t perfect—Freddie still struggled with control, and Emma’s powers wavered under stress—but they were improving.

The rest of the team joined in, their powers adding to the chaos. Robert replicated Freddie’s telekinesis, creating multiple barriers at once. Joel’s sonic scream shattered enemy lines, while Leo and Luis darted through the battlefield, their speed making them nearly untouchable. Sophia’s telepathy provided crucial intel, her calm voice guiding them through the toughest parts.

By the end of the session, the team felt exhausted but exhilarated. Freddie and Emma, though still far from perfect, had made significant strides. Ronnan called a halt, his expression one of quiet satisfaction.

“Not bad,” he said. “You’re getting it. But don’t get complacent—this is just the beginning.”

As the team gathered their things, Freddie turned to Emma, a grin spreading across his face. “We did it.”

Emma smiled back, her exhaustion overshadowed by a sense of accomplishment. “Yeah. We did.”

Robert clapped them both on the shoulder. “And you’ll keep getting better. We all will.”

Kara, who had been observing from the sidelines, stepped forward. “I’m proud of all of you,” she said, her voice filled with genuine warmth. “You’re not just learning to control your powers—you’re learning to trust each other. And that’s what will make you a great team. “

The team exchanged smiles, their bond stronger than ever. They still had a long way to go, but for the first time, they felt like they were truly on the right path.
