51 - Klaw/Elyndris/Daggat: Soldiers and Dragon

[Feat achieved: Arsonist. Cause: Slay over twenty enemies with one flame. Reward: Skill gain, flame affinity. Feat: achieved: Massacre. Cause: Slay over one hundred enemies with a single attack. Reward: Curse: Aura of Murder]

“What? AWESOME!” Cried Klaw as the notifications came. He was still recovering while the flames below grew in intensity.

[Note: Feats contested. Arsonist and Massacre are temporarily removed. Please be patient while judgment is passed.]

Huh? The fuck did that mean? Did the system take AWAY his feats? Was that even a thing?

“HEY!” He yelled into the air. “What the hell? Give it back!” Nothing.

Then, the sound of clanging metal echoed down the hall. The demon was returning. Klaw growled. He wasn’t in a state to fight the thing. He looked around, just to make sure none of the rest of his party was nearby to see. Then, he played dead.

He was already covered in his own blood and had a nasty head wound. So, it wasn’t MUCH of a stretch to assume he died from his wounds.

Klaw lay there, motionless, with his eyes closed. He could feel the vibrations from the warm metal from every step the demon took. It felt like hail.

When the demon approached, Klaw slowed his heartbeat to just shy of a stop. He could feel the demon’s gaze. Then, it hissed in an inhuman tone and dashed towards the fire. Klaw opened one eye to peek.

It was panicking. Dashing back and forth. Then, it leaped from the platform. Was it jumping into the fire? It pierced its roots deep into the far wall. It was a flat brick wall, not the round cobblestone wall that made up the rest of the room.

Then it roared and ripped the wall down as easily as Klaw could tear through a wooden box. Bricks tumbled down like stacked barrels and stagnant, foul water spilled into the room. Steam hissed as the fire was snuffed out by the torrent of water.

Beyond the wall was another room, but it was too dark to see into. The demon was coming back, rushing in a rage. He looked like he was out for blood.

As it passed Klaw, one root nonchalantly wrapped him up and threw him into the pit.

It took every ounce of Klaw’s will to not scream insults at the demon as he fell. He crashed into the water and splintered bones and roots underneath him. A few pierced his skin. He gasped in pain and foul water filled his lungs.

That was when Klaw remembered he didn’t know how to swim.

He coughed and thrashed, panic overtaking any rational thinking. Then his hand hit something solid. Instinctively he drew his claws and dug into it. Stone.

Klaw coughed and vomited water as he pulled himself up the wall. Roots served as good handholds, but he still used his claws. A moment later, he caught his breath.

[System reward contest resolved. Feat achieved: Arsonist. Cause: Slay over one hundred enemies with fire. Reward: Skill gain, flame affinity.]

[Argument: The subject used multiple distinct actions to spread the fire, which was the cause of destruction. Therefore, they did not slay the required number of creatures in a single attack or with a single flame, nullifying both feats. Ruling: While the subject employed multiple actions to spread the fire, it was determined that they utilized only one source of flame. Arsonist rewarded; Massacre redacted.]

Klaw read the notification passively. He barely registered its meaning. He would have to ask Daggat about that later. He inspected his Flame Affinity skill. It was a passive effect that increased the heat of fire, flame, or lava-based attacks. That would come in handy if he could get more of the drakeheart potion from Daggat.

He took in his situation. He was at the bottom of a putrid pit being filled with water. Corpses were being funneled towards the other end. He could either follow the flow or climb up. He opted to climb. Specifically, he climbed towards the ax.

It was easy to scale. Dead roots clung to the wall and he had his claws. When he reached the axe, he saw it was buried nearly to the handle in the stone. So, he grabbed the handle, braced his legs, and pulled.

The ax didn’t budge. It was going to take a while to pull out.

  —

“Have we tried left yet?” Elyndris offered. She wasn’t paying full attention. She was still trying to puzzle out who had earned the party a level. Now, the party’s experience was equalized. Anath in particular had a strange reaction. Elyndris thought she knew why. She just earned regenisis. She had the option to change her very being. For a girl like Anath, that must be terrifying. But, she pushed on. They can work on that later, when there is time to talk.

“Yes! We went that way already.” Anath groaned. “This place is a maze. We might as well start digging.”

“We just have to wait, Daggat said he will fix the trick walls,” Hunter suggested.

Elyndris sat on his head. It was a convenient, and comfortable, perch. They had been rushing from hall to hall. Some paths went down, under the manor, only to return them to another part of the manor.

Twice they had found a secret door back into the manor. One in a room full of ancient taxidermy and another leading outside. But, neither of these paths led them to claw. Elyndris hoped they weren’t too late. She periodically checked the party members to make sure Klaw was alive. She would have blinked in surprise if she had the eyes to do it.

“Does anyone know an Alfred Varnsach?” She asked the group.

“Daggat mentioned him while we showered, I think. Some smart kid? I don’t know for sure, why?” Hunter said.

“Because he is in our party.”

“What?” Asked Anath, “Hey, he didn’t ask us!” She looked worried. Another person for her to meet. It was good she had opened up to the goblins, but Elyndris suspected that was because they were monsters. Easier to not see monsters as, well, people. A harsh reality, but still true. If this Alfred was a human, then it would take a lot more work to get her comfortable again.

Elyndris sighed. “I hope he’s there for a reason. Splitting the experience seven ways is a bit… much.”

They continued their search. By now, they were completely lost. Well, not LOST. But they didn’t know where they were exactly. At any time, Anath could tear through a wall and they could get out.

Just as Elyndris was about to lose her temper, they came across a door. It looked solid, with a thick iron ring and a lock.

“Think this might be it?” Hunter asked.

“Might as well try it,” Elyndris said. Hunter did. It was locked. Of course, it was.

“Break it down?” Anath asked, hesitantly.

“Yes. Let’s crack this puny door!” Elyndris cried.

Hunter took two lumbering steps forward and slammed his shoulder against it. The door groaned, or maybe that was Hunter, but it didn’t budge.

That was a sturdy door. This was either to a prison or a treasury. Nothing else would warrant such a fine door. But, all obstacles were easy to overcome when there was no opposition.

“I can try to pry it with a sword?” Anath asked.

“No, that would snap it. Try destroying the lock with the spider legs.” Elyndris suggested. Anath made a disgusted face.

“Maybe it’s not the right way?” She said.

“If I were to kidnap a crazy bugbear, I would make sure a big door would keep him out.” Elyndris pointed out.

“I can try again.” Hunter rubbed his shoulder.

“Won’t do any good,” Elyndris murmured. “Anath, you have the tools, use them.”

“I’ve relied on the spider too much. I can rage then kick it down, maybe.”

“That would be a waste of your rage!” Elyndris snapped.

Then the hall seemed to darken and the temperature dropped.

“Hunter, could you back away from the door?” Another voice said. Zuss. She had come out of nowhere, as she does. Elyndris would have seen her coming, but the world was muted through her ogre steed. It was worth the trade-off for extra defense. Things were starting to get dangerous for a worm.

Hunter stepped away from the door.

“Zuss?! Is Daggat with you?” Anath asked. “And who is Alfred? How did you find us? Do you know where Klaw is?” She was speaking quickly, clearly nervous.

“No. Zombie. Daggat. Basement.” Zuss answered. Anath blinked at her in confusion.

There was a click and the door slowly opened. Hunter gasped at it. Elyndris faced Zuss.

  “What was that?” She hissed.

“Daggat played games with some kid, then the kid joined the party. It all went over my head a bit. Boils down to the kid is haunting the place and wants the demon gone too.” Zuss walked over and pushed open the door. “Before they sent me to get you, he told me to get into here. There are things in there that might help us out.”

  The door opened easily.

It led to a treasury. Everyone oohed and awwed as they marveled at the things within.

Zuss went for a box at one end. Inside were piles and piles of gold coins. Anath looked through a stack of paintings, each worth more than anything else still in the manor. Another small box contained important paperwork.

Most important, however, was a glass display case in one corner of the room. Within were treasures.

A dagger resting on a pillow. A bottle glowing yellow. A scroll. And, last, a spoon.

These were magic items. Elyndris could tell just from the feel of them.

“Those items, do they have any notes or plaques?” Elyndris asked. Anath walked over and looked.

“They do. Little cards. Umm… the dagger says ‘Blade of a thousand screams’ This blade causes an extreme amount of pain.” The dagger in question was a wicked sort. It had a jagged, almost broken-looking edge that still held a sharp edge. The handle was a dark crimson. “Who would have something like this?”

“These must be the lords… unsavory spoils from quests or war. Some nobles or adventurers who end up with magic items that they do not think belong among the public lock them away. For safekeeping, or as a collection. Tell me, girl, is there a way to open the case?”

  “Not that I can see.”

“Yes, they are sealed away. Beware, these may be powerful, but they might also have… unintended consequences.”

  Zuss shattered the glass.

“What are you doing?” Anath practically screamed.

“I call dibs on the dagger.” She said, picking up the cruel instrument. Then, she pricked her finger. Zuss gasped and dropped the dagger. “Ouch, okay that wasn’t playing around. It was like… my whole hand was stabbed over and over.”

Elyndris pitied the poor fool who stood against Zuss.

“Well, might as well read the rest,” Hunter suggested. “At this point, I don’t think some icky magic items will make us look any better than other mortals.” He nudged Anath.

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

“I guess not. Teaming up with monsters.” She carefully moved some glass to the side. “Ichor of the beast. Drink to obtain the soul of a monster and feast upon your enemies.”

“Oh, Daggat is going to hate that.” Elyndris said, “He’s been wanting a way to get a mortal soul. It is a hundred times easier to obtain a monster soul if you are a mortal. Cannibalism, increasing the eating skill and gaining the monstrous apatite skill, eating the heart of a monster, you name it. Mortals are a bit more stingy. There is a similar ichor to this for mortal souls, but it is more rare.”

“Bottoms up, Hunter. That’s yours.” Zuss said.

“I… uh, don’t know if I should.” He took the bottle and inspected it. It had a golden sheen to it. “That seems… not a good idea.”

“Don’t do it. It's nothing but trouble.” Said Anath, then turned to Zuss “No offense.”

“When you get to level five, you can evolve past ogre. Then you won’t have to worry about the curse.” Elyndris said.

“You should do it! To get rid of the curse.” Cried Anath. That was a quick change of heart. “What do ogres think about monsters, anyway? My… the town I am from hates them.”

“Well, never really thought about it. To us, a monster was just another person, you know? We work with goblins and wargs, but also humans and dwarves. A lot of ogres end up with the monstrous apatite skill. Hog and Minnow both had it.”

“We don’t have all day. Klaw is probably fighting for his life.” Zuss added.

Hunter shrugged, then drank the potion. He shuddered and swayed for a moment. Then he took a step back and slammed to the floor. Elyndris tumbled off of his head. He should have warned her.

“Hunter!” Anath screamed as she and Zuss ran to him. He was unconscious. Anath fussed over him when Zuss seemed to notice a light from behind his eyes. She pushed one open and her eyes went wide.

  “What is it?” Elyndris asked.

“There’s… symbols? Flashing through his eyes.”

“Leave him be. That is common in these situations. He should recover.” Elyndris flew to Anath's shoulder. “Next.”

Anath hesitated before returning to the treasures.

“Inkbeast scroll. Summons a serpent. What is that?”

“I don’t know. Never heard of it before.” Elyndris added.

“You don’t know something? That’s rare.” Zuss commented.

“Seems I don’t know everything. Good to know.” Elyndris should have felt uneasy, but instead, she felt a weight lift off her spirit. Not knowing meant she could still learn from the world and twist it to her will. “Well, hold onto it. Open it when the demon shows up, maybe it will summon something to help fight it? Now for the… spoon?”

“Assassins Ladle. Any food served by this ladle will be poisoned.” It appeared to be an ordinary ladle.

“Well, they can’t all be winners,” Zuss said.

  Hunter groaned and sat up.

“Are you okay?” Anath asked. “How do you feel?”

“That was weird. Saw a bunch of letters and numbers and things. Feel fine, just groggy. Level one monster, though.”

A coin clattered to the floor, drawing everyone's attention. Then it rolled away.

“I think that’s Alfred telling us it is time to go,” Zuss said. “He can move things like that. Daggat believes he's going to help us, so I guess he will.”

“Where is it taking us? Klaw, the demon?” Elyndris asked.

“We’re getting Klaw, then we need to chop down a tree. Turns out, we don’t even have to fight the demon at all. If you haven't spent your points, do it on the way.”

  —

Daggat moved the tiny walls. They had a strange resistance to them. As if he was actually reaching down and lifting massive stone walls, but with the strength of a god. It was exhilarating.

“They following the coin?” He asked. Alfred was sitting on his chair, eyes closed. He had explained to Daggat that he was using a vision spell along with his poltergeist abilities to move things around.

Because of his corrupt mana ability, he could more freely control where the mana in the manor flows. He was essentially a god while in this place.

Since he hadn’t simply killed them in their sleep, Daggat was inclined to believe he did hate the demon more than intruders. That was a relief, at least.

“Yes, and the ogre drank the ichor. As you requested.”

Good, now he had a proper party of monsters. And an undead. Well, he would have to see how long Alfred lasted. He didn’t see Alfred being willing to go out and search for power and treasure, even if Daggat wanted him in the crew. Daggat wasn’t sure he did.

Daggat focused on his task. The demon was moving around the labyrinth, searching for them. With the speed he moved, something had infuriated it.

That made it easier to toy with. He sent it down loops and through endless mazes. Blocking off exits and entrances. It moved into the manor a few times, but it had always returned to the tunnels.

A claw hesitantly reached out and swiped at the moving piece.

“Hey, bad cat!” Daggat yelled. Birdy had smacked the piece that represented the demon off the board.

He scurried to the floor and picked it up. Birdy had run off. Idiot cat, Daggat should have made Zuss give it back. Taking Calion’s wine was one thing. Zuss was a whole other level of twisted for stealing his pet.

Eh, it was theirs now. No use dwelling on it. He placed the piece back onto the board.

  It didn’t move.

“Ugh, hey, Al. The piece ain’t connected.”

“Did you remove it from the board?” He floated toward him.

“The fucking cat knocked it off.”

“Well, I can’t reconnect it right now. That spell isn’t ready. Where was it?”

  “I don’t know!”

“Where was it when it fell off?”

“That hall, I think? Maybe that one?”

“I shouldn’t have trusted this to you. Hold on, I will look.”

Just then, there was a clanging from the stairs. They shook and swayed.

  “Shit. I don’t think that’s necessary.”

“Hide! NOW!” Alfred yelled at him. He did so.

Just in time for the demon to enter the library. Daggat knew he was forgetting something. He forgot a backup plan for if the demon showed up here, instead of where he predicted.

This was not going to end well.
