Chapter 6

"Good morning! Is the Division still hiring?" - She asks with a warm smile on her face. A smile, bright and friendly. Looking in the direction of the TV.

Vaska sits up on the couch, looking at the newcomer. "Clara!" - She says happily, waving with a smile.

"Yes, we are still hiring. Vaska will help you with the paperwork." - Yunyan mumbles as she focuses at the game as the 'You died' text appears for the tenth time today.

"Vaska, you know her?" - Diff asks as he carefully washes away a sharp knife. Barely even looking up from the dishes.

"Yes! Clara is a surgeon from the local hospital." - Vaska answers as she gets up from the couch and makes her way to Clara.

"Former surgeon. I got fired for operating on a patient who did not have insurance." - Clara points out. Vaska slowly leads her up the stairs as they both start to chat about something.

Hours pass by, the sun is in the middle of the sky, casting small shadows on everything. Erica, and her two self proclaimed helpers Johnny and Paul are sitting on the floor. Looking at the open Garage door. All three are oily till the elbow.

"We did it..." - Paul mutters.

"We fucking did it." - Johnny agrees.

"We fucking need a new, proper car." - Erica murmurs.

At this point Vaska walks in, holding a big grey duffel bag in worn shape. She stops as soon as she spots them.

"Geez, the car was in this bad condition?" - She asks, walking to the car and opening the trunk, plopping the grey bag into it.

"Oh, you have no idea." - Erica answers. "I will surely see this car in my nightmares now."

"What's with the bag?" - Johnny asks, pointing to the old, worn out grey duffel bag. A single drop of oil hits the floor as it drops down from his finger.

"Weapons." - Vaska says. "Your sword, Paul's brass knuckles, Diff's hammer, Yunyan's sword, which is more likely a katana if you ask me and Erica's wrench."

"Don't speak ill of Damian!" - Erica cuts in.

"Another one of your exes name? Really?" - Vaska smirks, putting her hands on her hips.

"Diff's hammer? That isn't just a random hammer he found in the armory?" - Johnny asks.

"No. When Yunyan found you two in that mall, the hammer was next to him. That's why we expected it was his." - Vaska answers, taking a seat in the trunk. "Well, anyway. Have a wash. It's almost time to go."

"Lucky bastard. He got a free hammer." - Johnny murmurs. As he stands up with shaky legs. Walking away, careful not to touch anything with his oily hands.

With that the other two oily car saver retreated into their rooms to wash off the oil and put on clean clothes. Soon everyone gathered in the garage, next to the car.

Vaska still sitting in the trunk, wiping a gold-yellow lighter with a cloth. Erica sitting in a plastic chair, holding her googles in her hand. Paul sitting on top of a big create, one hand over another. Johnny stands idly, leaned against the wall, adjusting his cowboy hat.

Diff sits on a small crate, scrolling on his phone. Clara stands idly, hands in her jacket pockets. Lastly Yunyan arrives. She walks to a place where everyone can see her. She takes a breath before starting to talk.

"Thank you all for gathering here. I needed all of you here to discuss the commission in hand. A commission on a black paper are difficult ones. People can die in completing them."

She looks around the room, looking at everyone, straight in the eye before continuing.

"The original commission was to defend a miner team. From monsters as they bring up minecarts filled with resources."

"But due to an incredibly sensitive crystal, with a long and unpronounceable name. An explosion happened and two minecarts fallen down into the pit with a few miners and division workers."

"The pit is in fact a monster's pit. Ten total deaths so far. Three in the explosion, one worker and two miner. Seven in the falling, two miner and four worker."

Yunyan talks as everyone pays attention to her speech. She takes another breath to calm herself down.

"Of course. We would be rewarded handsomely for helping out."

"But, I do not require all of you to get up and fight. Who is coming?"

The question hangs in the air. Just spoken, but instantly made everyone silent. Not a single sound, just birds chirping. This silence stood for a full minute for the first person to say something.

"I'm coming." - Vaska announces proudly, putting away the now shiny lighter into her pocket.

"Well, they did ask for help. Count me in." - Paul smirks, cracking his fingers.

"Add me too. None of you could even start the car. Without me." - Erica says, putting her googles on her head with a confident smile.

This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

With that the three newbies remained. Clara, Johnny and Diff. Diff looks at Johnny, then at Clara. He only completed two commissions, yet he almost died on one. Diff was about to say something when Clara starts.

"There are people injured there. So I want to be there, to treat their injuries."

"I'm coming too. Every help should be useful." - Johnny says, adjusting his cowboy hat.

"Me too." - Diff starts, trying to came up for a reason.

"Everyone get in the car." - Yunyan orders, not letting Diff embarrass himself by not having a reason for why he wants to go as well.

With that, everyone took a seat. Erica behind the wheel, next to her Paul. In the row behind them, Johnny, Vaska, Yunyan. In the very last row Clara and Diff.

The car is slow to start. But what would you expect from a car which was mass produced years ago, but stopped producing it a year later. A cheap car, with more problems as the years go by then a toxic marriage after the purple mist faded.

Erica steers the wheel like she done it a thousand times. Paul turns on the radio. The radio. The best feature of the car, what hasn't been broken, once. Even though it's just static, it helps a lot to ease the tension.

"I'm starting the GPS." - Yunyan speaks as she types on her phone.

Soon everyone starts to do his own thing. Whatever if is vibing to the music that the radio managed to catch on. Or simply looking through the window.

Diff does the same. He stares at the passing buildings. The car passes by the hospital, now with a clear sign on the front door. 'WE ARE HIRING SURGEONS' In full capital letters. Clara smiles at the sight.

  Sudden turn.

Diff falls from his seat sideways. Once he opened his eyes again he sees Clara looking back at him.

"Found something interesting?" - Clara smirks quietly as she traces her finger through Diff's curly hair.

Diff's brain cuts short as he realizes that his head is on Clara's lap.

"Blushing already?" - Clara whispers, as she teases. Diff quietly sits up, trying to compose himself. "Sorry..." - Diff stutters as he acknowledges that the rest of the road will be embarrassingly quiet.

The car hums quietly as the car rolls onto the highway. Erica keeps her eyes on the road like it’s her final exam to be a mechanic. Even though she showed up drunk to her final she still managed to pass.

Paul in the seat next to her, pretending not to supervise her driving while very obviously supervising it.

“You’re riding the clutch again,” he mutters.

“You can ride the silence, too,” Erica answers flatly, turning up the radio just enough to drown him out.

Diff crunches into a chip in the back seat. “So... how far is this Division again?”

“Three hours if you don’t open another snack,” Yunyan murmurs from behind her tablet. With that Diff tries to eat quietly.

Divisions. Special organizations that complete commissions. The commission could come from the government, other Divisions, or just simply random people.

Commissions are given a number by the Central Work Safety. A commission with low number considered safe, but not the best paying jobs.

Commissions printed on a white paper are considered relatively safe.

Commissions printed on blue paper are from other Divisions. Asking for reinforcements. Can have high number assigned to it. But due to high difficulty it pays well.

Commissions printed on black paper with white letters are from other Divisions. Asking for reinforcements. But is urgently needing help. And tragically someone already lost their life. Usually don't have a number assigned to it but pays handsomely due to high difficulty and possible death.

Three hours of road later the Division finally arrives to the sight. A big rising of the ground, covered with grass, moss and pine trees. Mine tracks, leading deep into the rising through a big tunnel. Lanterns lighting up the way.

Three men sitting on the ground, two of them appears to be wearing some kind of uniform. The uniform looks stylish. A black jacket with bright orange strikes. On the sleeve at the end. And around the neck, leading down through the buttons.

A logo on the right side of the jacket, near the jacket. A brown circle with a crow, holding a shiny ring in it's mouth.

A visibly worn car parks like ten meters away from the entrance of the mine. Seven people gets out. One of the man who sits on the ground stands up and walks torwasd them.

"Are you... The backup?" - He asks, his voice trembles, just like his legs.

"We are." - Yunyan answers, holding out her arm for a handshake.

  The man shakes Yunyan's hand.

"Oh, finally. Someone arrived to save us." - The man murmurs.

  "Where are the injured?"

"In the tent. But the rest is deep in the mine." - The man points to a nearby tent.

Clara without hesitation starts walking in the direction of the camp.

"Why haven't they walked out yet?" - Yunyan asks.

"The only way back up collapsed." - The man answers.

"Could you tell me a bit more about what happened?" - Yunyan asks. A basket suddenly appears in Yunyan's hand. She tosses it to Diff and nods to the other two who still sits on the ground with her head.

Diff makes his way over them. The basket is in his hand. Halfway through he opens it to peek inside. Sandwiches, in a triangle shape wrapped into small, clear plastic bags. And bottle of waters, stacked on one another.

Diff squats down in front of them.

"It's not much... But it could help a little." - He puts down the basket in front of them.

"Thank you." - One of them says while reaching for one of the sandwiches. He wears the same uniform as the one who talks to Yunyan. His head is low, not looking at Diff.

"What happened in the mine?" - Diff asks.

"The ground suddenly collapsed, from under us. I am alive because I crouched down to tie my boots." - The other man speaks. Wide shoulders. Work clothes. And a thick grey beard. His hands on a orange hat with a flashlight built in.

"The others are still in the mine, trapped with no way out." - He murmurs.

"Don't worry sir. We are here to help out." - Diff tries to reassure the miner. That everything will be fine. But deep down, Diff knew. That probably the only thing that they will bring up are dead bodies.

Suddenly a clap collets everyone's attention. Yunyan stands near the entrance of the mine. Her hand is in the air, clearly wanting to gather everyone into one spot.

Just minutes later the entire 1111th Division with one miner and one worker from the other Division makes their down the mine.

The report did not lied. There is a massive hole, leading downwards. Its so deep that bottom cannot be seen, as it is enveloped in darkness. There are two other holes in the side of the massive hole, conveniently in the same height.

In these two holes people faces can be seen. They instantly start to wave at rescue team.

Without saying a word Yunyan looks at the ceiling. Ground with roots here and there hanging. It slowly starts to shake but with not much noise.

A big hole appears in the ceiling, letting sunlight in.

Deep down the hole, the pit, or whatever you like to call it. The bottom is filled with yellow coins. Books, swords, and other goodies. And a minecart, filled to the top with various crystals. Blue, red, yellow, green.

Seven. Seven bodies. Three of them with a patch of blood underneath them, with a face not so recognizable. One unfortunate fallen down right on a sword. The sword is still pointing up. But now it has someone pierced through.

And the final two. Curled up close to the wall. Holding eachother. One of them looks up and starts waving. Still being silent.

And the source of the danger. Right in the middle of the pile of treasures. A four legged monster. With two wide wings. A long tail. It's body covered by dark blue scales. A creature, known for being able to breathe fire.

  Sleeping there.

  A dragon.
