20. What Grows Together

Chapter 20 — What Grows Together

Silverpeak did not drive them out. It led them in with a false promise of sanctuary.

  That was it’s first lesson.

After the forest’s initial resistance, the pressure did not vanish—but it shifted. Paths still bent when Adam wasn’t paying attention, and distances lied with casual cruelty, yet the outright hostility dulled into something closer to scrutiny.

They were no longer trespassers. No longer unwanted guest.

They were subjects awaiting it’s unknown purpose.

Adam moved slowly now, never more than a few dozen paces at a time. Alvin ranged ahead in short, careful bursts—never disappearing from sight, never crossing into terrain that made his quills rise without reason. The razorback chipmunk had changed since the first clash. His movements were sharper, his pauses more deliberate, as if he were listening to warnings whispered in the wind.

  Undead found them anyway.

  Not hordes. Not ambushes.

Small groups seemingly sent to test them.

The first came at midday—a trio of skeletons half-fused into the roots of a fallen silver tree. They didn’t rise until Adam stepped into the clearing, and even then they moved with restraint, weapons raised but not rushed. Slowed through their age and the roots binding them.

  Adam exhaled and stepped forward.

His fists moved without thought now. Boxing had become something deeper than his technique from his past—economy of motion, weight transfer, bone alignment. A punch shattered a skull. A follow-up elbow caved in a ribcage. Holy enhancement flared inside the blows, contained and precise, enough to disrupt necromantic binding without lighting the forest like a beacon.

Alvin struck the undead with him.

Not like a wild animal, but as an extension of him. Moving where he needed to be to help take out the targets.

He launched low, quills flaring as he slammed into a skeleton’s ankle, holy energy sparking along hardened spines. The impact wasn’t just physical anymore. The undead’s binding flickered, blue witchlight stuttering as if confused.

Adam felt it through the bond and nearly stumbled.

  “What…?” he breathed.

The skeleton collapsed, bones loosening as if the command holding it together had failed.

Alvin skittered back, chattering sharply—excited, confused, alive.

  The System chimed softly.

  Bonded Companion Growth Detected.

Affinity Transfer : Holy → Alvin.

  Adam stared.

The realization hit slowly, then all at once.

  His growth wasn’t isolated.

As his skills evolved—they were no longer confined to his own body. The bond wasn’t just emotional or tactical.

It was bonding them on a new level.

“As I grow stronger,” Adam murmured, watching Alvin flex his spines as faint silver-gold lines traced their edges, “you do too.”

The forest reacted to this change.

  Not violently.

But curiously as a cat that sees a mouse.

As the days passed, undead encounters became more frequent—and more varied. Some rose with rusted weapons and discipline drilled into dead muscle. Others crawled free incomplete, joints fused wrong, bindings sloppy and weak.

Silverpeak was showing him multiple layers.

Adam fought constantly, through fear and exhaustion.

Sometimes for minutes. Sometimes for hours. Days turned into weeks.

  Each engagement sharpened him.

Unarmed Combat (Boxing) increased → Lv.18

  Holy Enhancement increased → Lv.8

Lay on Hands increased → Lv.14

  Alvin adapted alongside him.

The chipmunk learned when to strike joints, when to rake bindings instead of bone. His holy-infused spines disrupted necromancy on contact now, leaving fractures in the magic itself rather than just the corpse it animated.

One undead knight—armor fused into a single rusted shell—fell not from Adam’s blows, but from Alvin launching straight into the chest cavity, holy energy surging as spines tore through binding sigils etched into bone.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

The body collapsed like a marionette with cut strings.

  Adam laughed once—short, startled.

“Alright,” he said. “Alvin the mighty chipmunk.”

  They harvested everything.

Adam stripped armor methodically, Extraction guiding his hands even when bone and rust fought back. Helms. Blades. Buckles. Coins stamped with long-dead regimes. Rings fused to skeletal fingers. Charms cracked but still humming with faint necromantic residue.

  The System chimed steadily.

  Extraction increased → Lv.8

His subspace filled again—but this time with intention.

  System Note

Items harvested within Silverpeak retain contextual memory. Refinement may produce unexpected results.

Adam cataloged everything, aware that every piece told a story—and that Silverpeak remembered those stories even if the world didn’t.

  At night, the forest watched.

Adam learned to rest without fire, without light. Alvin curled against his chest or shoulder, quills relaxed now, holy warmth faint but present. The bond between them felt… thicker. More resilient.

Undead attacked more frequently at night.

They challenged him through every moment and he couldn’t let his guard down.

Once, Adam woke to find half a dozen standing at the edge of a clearing, weapons lowered, heads tilted as if listening to a lecture only they could hear.

They did not move when he stood.

They did not pursue when he left.

  They just kept observing.

Silverpeak was learning what he could do.

So was the thing that ruled it.

Adam reached a point on the map where the forest subtly changed again. Trees stood straighter. Ruins peeked through root and vine—old stonework swallowed but not erased.

The outer approaches of the old hold.

He stopped there, breathing slow, inventory heavy, muscles aching in a way that promised growth rather than injury.

  His skills had climbed.

  His bond had deepened.

And Alvin—small, sharp, glowing faintly with holiness—was no longer just a companion.

  He was family and proof.

That growth was not meant to be solitary.

That what Adam became could change the world around him—starting with the smallest life willing to walk beside him.

  Silverpeak had not rejected them.

  It had begun to engage.

And Adam knew, with grim certainty, that the next lesson would not be taught through mindless undead or passive observation.

  It would demand intent.

  Purpose.

And a choice that could not be walked back.

He tightened the strap on his dagger, rested a hand over Alvin’s warm, spined back, and stepped deeper into the forest—carrying the weight of everything he’d taken, and everything that was still waiting to be claimed. He decided to check his stats as they prepared to move towards the hold and played around with the settings to see how he’s changed, though he took away the descriptions of the skills to limit what he had to read.
