Chapter 15: The Upgrade of Di Ting

Deep in the Underworld, in front of the Palace of Green Clouds (Cuiyun Palace).

A giant beast resembling a cross between a lion and a dog, with a single horn and long ears, lay on the ground, its two front paws pressing tightly over its large ears, its body twitching uncontrollably.

  It was Di Ting.

Usually, it was majestic and awe-inspiring. As long as its ear touched the ground, it could hear secrets from any corner of the Three Realms and Six Paths.

But now, it was going crazy.

Because ever since that green man arrived, the "background noise" of the entire Underworld had turned into:

Thud thud thud heavy metal drum beats.

The roar of a Gatling gun.

The popping sound of exploding demons.

And the occasional "Hmph" from that man.

For Di Ting, whose hearing was extremely sensitive, these sounds were simply sonic weapons.

"Woof... whimper..." Di Ting let out a wronged low whine, its ears bleeding (leaking spiritual power).

Daoist Singularity walked over carrying a toolbox.

"Oh dear, poor little Di Ting." Singularity squatted down and patted the mythical beast's head. "I know, I know. That decibel level of heavy metal is indeed a bit hard on the ears. Come, Uncle will fix you up."

Di Ting looked up, teary-eyed, at Singularity. It thought Singularity was going to feed it some immortal pill.

Instead, Singularity pulled out a... massive, black, fully enclosed headset with two antennas from the box.

This was the [Active Noise Cancelling Tactical Headset · Mythical Beast Edition], made by Singularity using Abyssal Demon Iron (excellent sound insulation) and high-grade soundproofing runes.

  "Don't move, this is high-tech."

Singularity forcibly placed the huge headset over Di Ting's two large ears.

  Click. The buckles locked.

Singularity pressed the switch on the side of the headset.

  Hum—

A pale blue silence barrier instantly wrapped around Di Ting's head.

In an instant, Di Ting's world went quiet.

That annoying heavy metal noise vanished, and the chaotic screams of demons were gone.

It could even hear the sound of its own blood flowing.

Di Ting's eyes widened in shock, and it tentatively shook its head.

"Don't rush, this isn't just an earplug." Singularity adjusted the remote control in his hand. "I also installed a 'Sonar Radar System' and a 'Universal Translator' inside."

"Before, you relied on biological ears, easy to get interfered with. Now, I've connected you to the Heavenly Dao Cloud."

  Singularity tapped on the screen.

The antennas on Di Ting's headset instantly lit up red.

  [System Startup: Full-Frequency Monitoring Mode.]

[Filter Noise: Heavy metal music, explosions, Singularity's nagging.]

[Priority Monitoring: Demon whispers, invisible unit movement, enemy communication channels.]

  Di Ting suddenly stood up.

Its gaze became incredibly sharp. It wasn't listening with ears anymore; it was receiving a 3D sonar image directly in its brain.

It turned its head, looking toward a patch of void to the front left.

"Woof!" (There are three invisible Succubi sneaking around over there!)

The headset immediately translated its bark into standard human language and displayed it on Singularity's tablet.

"Good boy!" Singularity snapped his fingers excitedly. "Precise positioning!"

  This wasn't over.

Slayer happened to pass by (he had just finished clearing the neighboring block and was looking for leftover mobs).

Seeing this mythical beast wearing a tactical headset with antennas wobbling on its head, Slayer stopped.

He seemed very interested in this "Cyber-Mythical Beast."

Slayer walked over, reached out, and scratched Di Ting's chin.

The originally proud mythical beast, sensing the aura on this man that could make ten thousand ghosts submit, actually lay down obediently and even actively rubbed its headset-wearing head against Slayer's iron gauntlet.

"Woof?" (The noise cancellation on this headset is really good; I can't hear your BGM at all.)

Although Slayer didn't understand dog language, he understood Di Ting's expression.

He pulled a huge demon leg bone (still fresh, torn off just now) from his dimensional pocket and threw it to Di Ting.

Di Ting excitedly caught the bone, its tail wagging like a propeller.

Singularity watched this scene and recorded in his notebook:

"Project: Di Ting Modification. Status: Successful."

"Effect: Not only cured hyperacusis but upgraded to an 'Anti-Stealth Radar Vehicle'."

"Side Effect: Now it only listens to that green-skinned man..."

  "Biological vs Mechanical."

When the Underworld's mythical beast put on noise-canceling headphones, it was no longer a dog lying on the ground eavesdropping.

It became the most efficient reconnaissance radar in the Underworld's defense system.

"Next chapter, it's the turn of that pair of good buddies—Black and White Impermanence." Singularity looked at the two unlucky guys in the distance still hitting mobs one by one with mourning sticks, and shook his head. "Too inefficient, need to swap gear."
