Interlude-A Whisper Between Two Heartbeats

  **Interlude

  A Whisper Between Two Heartbeats

It came when the building blinked.

When the ward lights dimmed a fraction too long. When the air thickened in the space between breath and silence. When the tether between Trixie and Nolan pulled tight like a string tuning itself.

  A soundless sound.

  A pressure behind their sternums.

  A paleness behind their thoughts.

  And then—

  <>

Not a command. An invitation to stillness.

  <>

Trixie stiffened, nails digging into her palms.

Nolan felt it too — not in his ears, but in the back of his skull, like a cold hand closing over a candle flame.

  <>

  Trixie’s pulse jumped.

  Nolan’s breath hitched.

  The stairwell air grew brittle.

  <>

Dixie arched, growling at a shadow that wasn’t a shadow at all.

Trixie whispered, “Stop—stop—don’t talk to me—”

But the whisper slipped between her ribs anyway.

  <> <>

Trixie shook so hard she could barely stand.

“No,” Nolan growled. “Stay out of her.”

The Hollow King’s attention slid to him like a knife sliding into a sheath.

  <> <> <>

Nolan’s heart thundered. The tether blazed hot.

“Get out,” he snarled, voice cracking.

A soft, cold amusement stirred the air.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

  <> <>

  Trixie bit back a sob.

Dixie leapt to her shoulder, claws anchoring her to the world. “Back off, hollow parasite!”

The whisper ignored the cat entirely.

  <> <>

“I’m not going,” she whispered. “I’m not—”

  <> <>

Nolan stepped between her and the empty air. “She doesn’t have to do anything you want.”

  Silence.

  Sharp. Perfect. Dead.

  Then—

  <>

Nolan’s jaw clenched. “I own every part of it.”

<> A low rumble of amused hunger: <>

  Trixie made a choked noise.

Dixie froze, tail lashing. “Do not let him divide you. Do not let him name what isn’t his.”

The Hollow King’s interest flicked toward the familiar.

  <>

  Dixie hissed louder, fur bristling.

Trixie clutched Nolan’s sleeve. “Please—stop talking to us—stop trying to—”

  <> <>

  The floor shuddered.

  Far below, something vast inhaled.

  <> <>

  “We’re not going,” Nolan repeated.

The whisper curved like a hand brushing their shadows.

  <> <> <>

  Trixie flinched.

“Don’t listen,” Nolan whispered urgently. “Trixie—look at me—stay with me—”

  <>

The tether spasmed so sharply that Trixie nearly collapsed.

Dixie pressed herself to Trixie’s jaw, purring a grounding note that sounded like claws and prayer. “He doesn’t get to decide that. Only we do.”

A silence deeper than silence fell.

The Hollow King’s attention narrowed to a pinprick.

  <> <> <> The voice slid into a soft, awful tenderness— <>

  The lights flickered.

  The tether burned.

The whisper ended with one last brush:

  <>

  The world snapped back.

The stairwell reassembled. The air warmed. Dixie let out a strangled hiss and shook her entire body like she was expelling poison.

  Trixie fell to her knees.

Nolan caught her before she hit the floor. “I’m here. Hey. I’m here.”

Dixie pressed her forehead to Trixie’s cheek. “We are not letting him define the word ‘soon.’ Understood?”

  Trixie nodded shakily.

Nolan whispered into her hair, voice cracking, “We go down there together. But we go on our terms.”

  And somewhere deep below Salem—

  something smiled.
