Chapter 5 - Silent Architecture Of Lies

The corridor outside the infirmary felt colder than usual, the lunar-stone lamps flickering as if the air itself was unstable. Jude and Xylas stood in the shadows, their voices tight with a fear they couldn't name.

"Did you see the blade, Xylas?" Jude whispered, his hands tucked into his sleeves to hide their trembling. "After he fell... I picked it up. It didn't look like a weapon anymore. It looked... exhausted. The gold had drained out of it, and the edge was dull, like a piece of lead. It felt like holding something that was crying. Like the sword itself had lost the will to exist."

Xylas nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on the grain of the wooden door. "It reminded me of the 'Old Text' legends. The villain they called The Silver Scourge. The history books say he was a high-functioning lunatic—a mental patient with the power of a god. He found 'symmetry' in destruction and laughed while he tore his own clan apart. He wasn't a hero; he was a tragedy that refused to die."

"When Kaelo stood before that beast..." Jude’s voice dropped to a terrified crawl. "I felt that same cold vibe. That joy. If he’s falling into that same madness, we can’t tell him the truth. We tell him he lost. We tell him he’s a 'Zero.' If he believes he’s a failure, maybe that... that thing inside him will stay asleep."

Behind the door, Kaelo’s eyes snapped open. The white ceiling was a blur of static, and the air smelled of sterile herbs and something metallic. His memory was a fractured mirror—he remembered the sun, the sand, and then a sudden, terrifying surge of pleasure.

"What happened?" Kaelo whispered, his voice sounding like dry parchment. "The trial... the match..."

[ CURRENT STATUS: RANK ZERO. ]

The indigo text shimmered in his vision, pulsing rhythmically. Kaelo winced, clutching his head.

"You," Kaelo hissed. "You’ve been in my head since I woke up. Who are you? Do you even have a name, or am I just talking to a glitch?"

[ NAMES ARE CONSTRUCTS FOR THE FINITE, ] the text flickered, the static smoothing out into a deep, elegant violet. [ BUT IN THE CYCLES WHERE WE WERE CLOSEST, YOU CALLED ME 'SOLA'. ]

"Sola," Kaelo repeated, the name feeling strangely heavy on his tongue. "Fine, Sola. Tell me the truth. My friends... I can hear them whispering. They say I’m in bed because I failed. But I remember a laugh. I remember the feeling of something dying in a single second. Did I win?"

[ ACCESS TO MATCH LOGS: ENCRYPTED. ]

"Again with the encryption!" Kaelo hit the mattress, his frustration boiling over. "If I’ve lived 999 times, you must know everything. Tell me! What did I do in those lives? Was I really this 'Silver Scourge' they talk about? Did I really massacre my own people?"

[ I CANNOT PROVIDE DATA THAT WOULD CAUSE VESSEL COLLAPSE, ] Sola replied. [ YOUR CURRENT SOUL IS FRAGILE. THE MEMORIES OF 999 DEATHS WOULD SHATTER YOU BEFORE THE SUN SETS. ]

Kaelo froze, his breath hitching. "999 deaths... Sola, have you been with me through all of them? Every single life? Every single goodbye?"

The text paused for a long time. The indigo glow dimmed, almost as if the system itself was hesitating.

[ I HAVE BEEN THE WITNESS SINCE THE FIRST TEAR IN THE SKY, KAELO. I HAVE WATCHED YOU FALL 999 TIMES, AND I HAVE CARRIED YOUR SILENCE INTO EVERY NEW SUNRISE. ]

"Then why won't you help me now?" Kaelo’s voice broke. "If you’ve seen me suffer for centuries, why let me wake up in a world where my friends lie to me and my own sword is crying?"

[ BECAUSE THIS IS THE 1,000TH CYCLE, ] Sola’s text grew large, turning a sharp, warning crimson. [ AND IN THIS LIFE, THE PAINTER HAS JOINED THE CANVAS. I AM NOT HERE TO GIVE YOU THE PAST, KAELO. I AM HERE TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A FUTURE. ]

Kaelo looked at the wall, where a fresh streak of indigo paint was slowly appearing. It was the only thing that felt real.

"So I stay a 'Zero'?" Kaelo whispered.

[ FOR NOW. LIES ARE A FORM OF ARMOR. WEAR THEM UNTIL YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO WIELD THE TRUTH. ]
