Chapter 4 - The Unexpected

The ghostly sage hovered before Null, still glowing faintly from the pendant’s awakening. His outline drifted like faint moonlight reflected on still water—fragile, shimmering, but undeniably real. Dust motes swirled lazily in the cold air of the plaza, disturbed only by the subtle pulse of spirit light radiating from the old man.

“I am Barcus,” the apparition said, voice resonating directly inside Null’s mind rather than through his ears. “Last High Scholar of the Agora… and the final witness to the day knowledge died.”

Null took a cautious step backward, hand drifting to the obsidian dagger at his hip. He still felt the ache of Altitude Sickness in his lungs. His logical instincts—Ethan’s instincts—told him this could not be happening. Ghosts. Magic. Telepathic voices. None of it belonged in a world he understood.

And yet… here he stood, staring into translucent eyes older than the mountain.

“This place,” Barcus continued, sweeping a faint hand across the ruined plaza, “wasn’t always a grave. It was the Agora—heart of the world. A sanctuary atop its highest peak, where Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Oni, Beastkin… all races gathered freely. Not for war or profit, but for wisdom. A great library, a university—its purpose was unity through knowledge.”

A flicker of grief rippled through his form, dimming the light of his outline.

“Until Aton named our pursuit of truth a heresy.”

 Null’s breath hitched.

“Aton feared unity,” Barcus said, voice carrying ancient bitterness. “He feared minds unshackled by His narrative. And so He sent His legions up this mountain… and burned everything we built.”

His shimmering eyes closed briefly, the weight of memory bending his form like wind bending willow branches.

“When the slaughter began, my disciples and I sealed the teleportation gates to prevent them from spreading their destruction across the world. It saved cities… but not us.”

Barcus slowly opened his eyes again. “My body perished here, but my soul clung to this pendant. Waiting. Hoping.”

He floated closer, studying Null’s face with growing intensity—like a scholar examining a newly discovered artifact.

“I sensed others over the centuries. But their souls were… too simple. Too loud.”

 His eyes narrowed.

“But you… your soul is a quiet, fractured harmony. One that should not exist. A paradox—one and many. A vessel of impossible potential.”

Null swallowed, throat dry. “What do you want from me?”

Barcus’s expression softened into weary resolve. “I no longer have the strength to restore what was lost. But you… you are new. Untethered. Capable. Become my candidate. Walk the path I cannot. Learn my teachings. And one day, perhaps… become my successor.”

The words hung between them like a fragile thread, woven of hope and desperation.

 “Why me?” Null asked.

“Because you search for truth—even when it frightens you,” Barcus said gently. “And because the world does not have the luxury to wait for someone else.”

The idea of a sanctuary for truth—of rebuilding an entire civilization’s heart—should have felt absurd. Impossible.

Yet something about it resonated in Null’s fractured soul, echoing the unanswered questions of his lost week and the instincts that moved his hands like someone else’s.

 “I accept.”

A faint but genuine smile touched Barcus’s spectral face. He floated forward and placed a cold, weightless hand upon Null’s forehead. The sensation was like dipping into a deep river—chilling yet surprisingly steadying.

Null followed, noticing how faint light from the ghost illuminated carvings he hadn’t seen before.

The plaza’s stonework formed a vast circular pattern—eight sectors arranged like petals around a central hub. Each sector held two rune circles: one broken, one intact.

“This was the Agora’s heart,” Barcus said. “Eight pairs of teleportation formations—one pair for each of the great regions. To awaken one requires a catalyst. A sufficient mana source.”

“The mana crystal,” Null said, realizing.

Barcus nodded. “It will ignite the circuit. But the formation also requires spiritual energy to stabilize it. I must supply that energy. Doing so will force me into dormancy.”

Null frowned. “You’ll disappear?”

“I will sleep,” Barcus corrected. “For a time. Sacrifice is the cost of hope. Create a sanctuary where truth may grow unshackled by Aton’s lies. This is the charge I give you.”

Null felt the weight of the words settle into his chest.

“I… I’ll try.”

Barcus’s smile trembled with pride and sorrow. “That is all I ask.”

Null opened his mouth to say more—

—and Barcus suddenly convulsed.

The ghost’s form cracked like glass struck by a hammer, jagged lines of light ripping through him. Runes around the plaza flickered erratically.

“No—NO!” Barcus shouted, voice suddenly raw and jagged. “This cannot be happening!”

Null staggered back. “What’s wrong?!”

“My… my network—my children—are screaming!”

Four phantom weapons materialized above the plaza, blazing with symbolic energy:

A titanic warhammer of molten red fire.

A silver bow with arrows made of wind.

A blood-red staff pulsing like a beating heart.

A spear wrapped in swirling stone.

Barcus’s voice trembled with terror.

“The Ego Weapons! The Forgeheart of the South… Whisperwind of the Southwest… Bloodvial of the Northwest… Earthpact of the East… all resetting to infancy!”

The spectral weapons flickered violently before bursting apart into motes of fading light.

“And their wielders—Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier—heroes of their age—have regressed! Their memories of mastery… erased! Without death. Without corruption! It is impossible!”

His gaze snapped to Null, wide and horrified.

“You arrived… and the impossible followed. You are the epicenter of this anomaly!”

Null shook his head. “I—I don’t understand! I didn’t do anything!”

“I do not know if you are the cure… or the beginning of a new calamity,” Barcus said, voice thinning like smoke in wind. “But you are the only lead we have left!”

His form collapsed inward, unraveling into shards of light.

“No more time!”

He thrust a trembling hand toward the teleportation circle engraved with a mountain and anvil.

“Place the mana stone!”

Null didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the [Low-Grade Mana Crystal] from his inventory and fit it into the runic socket. The crystal flared violet. Circles of dormant runes ignited in response.

“Not enough…” Barcus gasped. “I must… give… the rest…”

His entire form condensed into a blinding silver star.

With a sound like a snapping thread, the star shot downward into the formation.

Light roared across the plaza, runes exploding into brilliance.

“I send you South!” Barcus’s voice echoed, now stretched and fading.

“Seek Eins—master engineer, keeper of the Forgeheart!
