Jason appeared on a dimly lit staircase. He was facing an archway that led out onto a narrow path with swinging axes. His eyes widened when he saw a gigantic wolf on the other side snarling at him. “No way I’m fighting that!”
“Kill it now.” Jason’s heart nearly skipped a beat when he heard the squirrel give him the orders. He didn’t have good balance, and that wolf was just waiting for him. Before he had a chance to do anything, his body jerked and turned in a different direction.
He saw a skeleton with a glowing ball of light stuck on its chest and a sword in each of its hands. A clang rang out as the skeleton slammed both its swords on the stone floor. The next moment, something small and dark was running at him.
He quickly realized it was the squirrel. It ran behind him as the skeleton noticed him.
“Well, it’s better than facing that wolf,” Jason said as he took a step towards his foe, mace held with both hands. He swung his mace at the skeleton, who blocked with one sword while swinging its second across Jason’s bare chest. Jason stumbled back, gasping in pain.
“Attack now!”
Gritting his teeth, his body jerked to obey. Jason didn’t fight this order and attacked. He got a good hit across its head, dropping its health bar by a good thirty percent.
However, the skeleton quickly righted its self and was swinging both its swords at his neck before he realized what had even happened.
Jason had expected to have his head cut off or at the very least fall to the floor, bleeding out. However, the next moment, his head was shoved to the side, the sword just barely missing him.
He thought he had felt claws on his face, but the squirrel was crawling around on the skeleton. He hadn’t even seen the squirrel move.
“Attack!”
Jason was worried about some sort of backlash if he hit his summoner, but it was an order after all, so he did so.
This time, the skeleton was knocked off balance and fell. Jason’s chest was throbbing with pain, but he didn’t hesitate and hit the skeleton three more times before it stayed down.
“Good job.” the squirrel said. “But you made me waste what I had left in my yellow bar.”
Jason had no idea what that meant exactly, but his chest burned so badly he didn’t pay it much mind.
Suddenly, Jason appeared back in his apartment, still holding his chest in pain. However, the pain was completely gone. Pulling his shirt up just to make sure he was fine.
He noticed a scar there, along with several others that he knew for certain weren’t there before.
Going to the mirror, he saw another scar running across his face. If he was being honest, it looked pretty bad ass. He didn’t remember getting that one, but it could have been when he was fighting the group of skeletons.
Jason shook His head. Was this his life now? Just get randomly teleported to another dimension to fight on the behalf of a squirrel.
How was he even meant to have a life? Though he supposed he didn’t have a life anyway, his girlfriend he had planned to marry just up and left him.
Well, if you call going to another dimension or world leaving him.
Jason reached up to his chest again. It was an odd sensation, like a phantom pain or something. It took him a moment to realize what he had even been doing before he was summoned. “Oh yeah, squirrel documentaries.”
Sighing, he turned the tv off. He just wasn’t in the mood. He still felt empty from Sarah just leaving and not saying anything.
Jason tried to muster up anger, but he just couldn’t, not at her. In the back of his mind, he hoped he might still find her. It had been the main reason he accepted the request to become a familiar after all.
Going to the fridge to get a drink, he noticed a picture of them. It was when they had visited the red woods. Closing his eyes for a moment, he opened them.
“Okay. I need a distraction.” Grabbing his keys, phone, and wallet. He headed out the door.
He could be summoned to fight skeletons at any moment, he might as well enjoy his time here. While riding the elevator down, he called for an Uber, then began looking for clubs nearby on his phone.
He had never been one for going out to bars or clubs. In his opinion, it was just a waste of money and there were always better things to do. But money really didn’t matter anymore, did it?

Besides, he had plenty saved back from his job. A job that he hadn’t gone back to since Sarah left. They likely thought he was also raptured.
It wasn’t long before he was at the nearest club, Midnight lounge. Although when he saw the line to get in, he quickly decided to find a bar instead.
He didn’t have the time to waste standing around. He was sure once that squirrel’s mana refilled, he would be summoned again.
Now that he was sitting at a bar, he was unsure what to do. He was hoping to pick up a girl to take his mind off Sarah. Even though he felt like he would be cheating. However, those worries started to dissipate after a few shots.
He was just fixing to get up when a cute blonde sat down next to him.
“Are you going to order me a drink or just undress me with your eyes?” The blonde said in a playful manner. The next several minutes was him buying over priced drinks for the blonde as she complained about her ex.
Then she started crying on his shoulder and Jason rolled his eyes. This was not what he wanted. He was already in an emotional state and he was sure his mind was being tampered with. How else was he able to be summoned to another world and not be having a complete meltdown? Or was he having the melt down right now?
“Hey Scum bag, what are you doing with my girl?” Jason turned to see a tall, muscular looking man with a dragon tattoo running up his neck.
Sensing trouble, the bartender spoke up. “There will be no fighting in here. Take it out back.”
“Alright then!” The tall man said, presumably the blondes ex.
“Marcus, stop! He was just buying me a drink.”
“So he could take advantage of you.”
Jason wasn’t sure why or how, but he found himself outside next to a dumpster.
The blonde was screaming for them to stop. Jason oddly felt excitement for the fight to come.
Unconsciously, Jason went to raise his trusty mace. He looked down at his empty hands in confusion. At the same time, the large man charged Jason, tackling him to the ground as he began to beat him senseless.
The blonde ran over and began trying to stop him, which was just enough of a distraction for Jason to knee the man between the legs and move away.
As the man bent over, Jason ran over and kicked him in the face as hard as he could. The man fell over on his back and Jason jumped on top of him. Then proceeded to punch the man’s face as hard and as fast as he could. Flashes of skeletons stabbing him to death ran through his mind.
He heard someone screaming to stop, but he had orders. He had to follow his summoner’s orders. Jason didn’t stop till he was dragged off the guy by two men. Jason recognized one. “Officer Brown.” Jason asked words slurring.
“No, but you do fit the description of the man he has been looking for.” The cop said. The next thing Jason realized, he was in cuffs in the back seat of a cop car.
A flash of green light and Jason was staring at a skeleton, mace in hand and chest burning.
He didn’t have time to reflect on the man he was sure he had killed.
“Kill the skeleton.” The squirrel said.
A golden light surrounded him and he felt stronger and faster. The burning sensation in his chest also subsided, though it still felt sore.
The skeleton wasn’t waiting and charged at him. Jason moved to the side as the skeleton tried to stab him with its spear. With a swing of his mace, he hit the skeleton’s shield, causing it to stumble back and nearly drop its shield. Another swing knocked the shield from the skeleton’s hand. Jason then swung his mace at the skeleton over and over till nothing remained of its head but bone shards.
He just stood there breathing hard. His stamina bar only had a sliver remaining.
“Good job Jason.”
He wasn’t sure why, but he liked it when the squirrel praised him. It surely had something to do with the squirrel being his summoner, or that he just wanted, no, needed, to have a purpose.
“Ben, could you heal him? His health bar isn’t full.”
Jason glanced at the rabbit as a gold light engulfed him, causing his chest to stop throbbing.
“It looks as we only have two more paths to go across before we reach the top.” The squirrel said, “I’m sure there will be a boss monster up there.”
Jason’s eyes widened. “Boss monster? I really don’t think I’m ready for that.”
“Ugh, I’m starving.” The squirrel said. “We need to finish this quickly.”
The dark furred squirrel turned to Jason. “I need to level you up. Let’s see here. You need to be stronger. I’m not worried about you using magic. Hmm, giving you more health would be good. But strength is where I want to focus your stats.”
“Wait, did you say magic? I want magic.”
The squirrel paid him no mind as it continued to talk to its self. “Alright, that looks good. Can you see it?”
“See what?” Jason asked. No sooner than he spoke, pain shot through his entire body and his muscles began to tear apart and repair themselves at an insane speed.
It felt like every vein in his body exploded, then re-knit back together over and over again. Then suddenly it stopped. Jason was on all fours panting.
“Oops. Sorry, I guess that makes sense. Your strength went from ten to fifteen. I should have done it one point at a time. I won’t do that again to you.” The squirrel said. “Makes sense why I can only place mine one at a time. Again I’m sorry buddy.”
Jason stood up and looked at himself. His arms looked much bigger. And he now had abs. He looked like some sort of professional athlete. He wished he had something to test his mace out on.
“Only two measly essences to get you to the next level. You best not die next time I summon you.” The green glow engulfed Jason.
“Wait, no, I don’t want to go back yet.”
Jason fell onto his backside in the street, handcuffs still on. They felt much tighter now. He looked around in confusion. He had been in a cop car before he was summoned. But the car was no longer here. He must just appear where he was last.
Getting to his feet was tricky, while being handcuffed and hands behind his back. A horn blared, making him realize he needed to get out of the road.
His shirt had blood all over it and his hands hurt. He then realized he had likely killed someone. The cops would be looking for him.
Jason was unsure if he should turn himself in. He had to get these cuffs off. The sun was just rising, and he was exhausted. He was also much more buff than he was before, so maybe they wouldn’t recognize him. It seemed as the squirrel leveled him up than it would affect him here too. This made sense why the cuffs felt so tight.
If he had gone from ten to fifteen, did that mean he was twice as strong now?
Walking down the street in handcuffs and blood all over his clothes would likely have someone call the cops on him.
“I should have stayed in and watched squirrel documentaries.” Jason said as he started down the sidewalk, mind racing.
It was too bad the effects of alcohol vanished when he was summoned. Only the taste of alcohol and blood remained from his night out.
