Ellis woke up to the faint smell of antiseptic and the soft murmur of voices. He blinked against the harsh light streaming in through a small window, squinting as he tried to orient himself. The last thing he remembered was the intense cold, the feeling of air leaching from his body. He glanced around, noting the sparse but clean furnishings of the clinic: white walls adorned with minimalistic art, a sturdy metal-framed bed, and a small wooden nightstand with a glass of water and a digital clock ticking softly.
“Ah, you're awake,” came a familiar voice. Ellis turned to see the doc, a stern yet kind-faced man with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor. He approached his bedside, Hr expression a mix of concern and curiosity.
“How are you feeling?” He asked, checking his bandages with practiced hands.
Ellis winced as he moved, feeling the pull of stitches and the dull ache of bruises. “Like I got hit by a truck,” he admitted, his voice rough.
The doc chuckled softly, shaking his head. “More like a freight train, from the looks of you.” She adjusted his bandages and took a step back, crossing his arms. “You've got a lot of explaining to do, Ellis. What happened out there?”
Ellis took a deep breath, recounting the events of the night. He described the three men, their strange abilities, and the unexpected power that had surged through him. As he spoke, fragments of the encounter flickered in his mind: the eerie glow in their eyes, the sudden burst of energy that had exploded from his core, the surreal sensation of time slowing down. The doc listened intently, his expression growing more serious with each detail.
“That power... it's not something I've seen before,” He said slowly. “It seems to react to your physical state, amplifying your strength but also draining you in the process. That type of power is dangerous, Ellis. You need to be careful.”
Ellis nodded, understanding the gravity of his words. “I didn't mean for it to happen. It just... came out of nowhere.”
Before the doc could respond, the door to the clinic swung open, and Carmilla stepped in. Her eyes widened when she saw Ellis, and she hurried over, concern etched on her face. Carmilla, with her fiery red hair and fierce demeanor, had always been a force of nature within the Phoenix Nest.
“Ellis! What the hell happened to you?” she demanded, her tone a mix of worry and anger.
“Long story,” he muttered, wincing as he shifted to face her. “But I'm okay, really.”
Carmilla didn't look convinced, but she let it go for the moment. “Well, you had us all worried sick. You can't just disappear like that and come back looking like you went through a war zone.”
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Ellis sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I know, I'm sorry. It wasn't exactly planned.”
The doc cleared his throat, drawing their attention. “Ellis needs rest and time to heal. You can lecture him later, Carmilla.”
Carmilla nodded reluctantly, giving Ellis one last stern look before stepping back. “Fine. But don't think you're off the hook.”
Ellis managed a weak smile. “Wouldn't dream of it.”
The next few days passed in a blur of rest and recovery. Ellis spent most of his time in the clinic, his body slowly mending under the doc's watchful eye. The sterile environment, though monotonous, provided a sanctuary where he could recuperate. He took the opportunity to learn more about the Phoenix Nest, the underground community he had found himself a part of.
The Phoenix Nest was a haven for the damned and destitute. Ellis discovered that many of the residents had fascinating powers, much like his own newfound strength. Some had abilities that were subtle, while others were far more overt.
There was Sophia, who could manipulate light to create illusions, it was amazing, yet strange. The illusions could do things but make no sound or impact, but she didn’t need either. She was an entertainer and a teacher with it, every time Ellis spent time around her she was thanked by parents of children with little other options.
And Gregor, whose skin could turn to stone. He was truly heroic, the man was strong despite being smaller than Ellis, as well as younger. He was only fifteen but put himself in the middle of any fight he got the chance too, he was a frequent flier to the infirmary. Though always justified it as never getting worse than heavy bruises.
Leo visited frequently, regaling Ellis with stories and updates on the goings-on outside the clinic. Despite his chatty nature, Leo was a skilled mechanic and a valuable member of the community. He also introduced Ellis to a few of the other residents, each with their own opinions on Ellis's recent encounter.
“Man, you were badass out there,” one of the younger members said, small horns on the sides of their head poking out from their scruffy hair, eyes wide with admiration. “Taking on those guys like that? Impressive.”
Another, older member frowned, shaking his head. “It was reckless. You could have gotten yourself killed, and for what? A pointless fight?”
Ellis listened to both sides, understanding the concerns but also feeling a sense of pride in having defended himself and Leo. It was a delicate balance, one he would need to navigate carefully.
One afternoon, as Ellis wandered the Phoenix Nest, he encountered a group of animals with Vita assets, creatures that had unique abilities, though much rarer than in the human residents. A sleek black cat with two sets of glowing eyes prowled the corridors, while a bird with shimmering feathers that clanged together with the sound and color of copper perched on a high ledge, watching the activity below.
Ellis marveled at the sight, intrigued by the diverse array of those within the community. He approached a young woman who was tending to a fox with iridescent fur, its tail flicking back and forth lazily.
“Hey,” Ellis greeted, nodding towards the fox. “That's amazing. How did it get like that?”
The woman smiled, stroking the fox's fur. “It's a rare phenomenon. Some animals are born with these gifts, while others develop them through exposure to certain factors. We try and take care of them here, just like we do with our human members.”
Ellis knelt down, offering his hand to the fox. It sniffed his fingers before nuzzling against his palm, a warm feeling spreading through him. “It's incredible,” he murmured. “I didn't know animals could have powers like this.”
The woman nodded. “There's a lot you still have to learn about this world, Ellis. But you're in the right place to do it.”
As Ellis continued to explore the Phoenix Nest, he felt a growing sense of belonging. Despite the challenges and dangers he had faced, he was among people who understood and accepted him. He was part of something larger, a community where he could learn, grow, and discover the true extent of his ability.
And for the first time in a long while, Ellis felt a spark of hope for the future. The endless corridors of the Phoenix Nest, filled with echoes of whispered conversations and the hum of latent power, became a labyrinth of possibilities. Each day brought new discoveries, new connections, and a deeper understanding of the world he had stumbled into.
