"I See..."

Ellis stood in the quiet corridor, his breath forming small puffs in the cool air. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The image of Kaya, Marcus, and Jun huddled together in secret haunted him, their tense expressions and hushed whispers fueling his growing unease. Determined to uncover the truth, he resolved to confront them, but first, he needed to understand his own powers to the tea.

The next morning, Ellis rose early and slipped out of the Nest before most of the residents were awake. He headed to the outskirts of the community, where the labyrinthine corridors gave way to open spaces and abandoned areas. Here, he could practice his abilities without fear of being disturbed.

Ellis focused on the cold in his chest, a familiar and unwelcome presence. Why was it that it only seemed to crop up when he used his power, it didn't seem to dissipate for a few days either.

With a deep breath, he opened his eyes and focused on a nearby metal barrel. The memory of the previous night’s encounter still fresh in his mind, he knew he had to master his abilities if he wanted to protect his newfound home.

Ellis reached out toward the barrel, trying to focus the power he knew he had toward it. Initially it didn't come, just leaving him standing there like an idiot reaching toward the barrel. But slowly, the warmth moved, slowly it seeped from his core.

Pulling itself along in his bones and blood into his arm, then into his forearm and through his wrist. It burned hottest in his fingertips and less so in his palm, but it felt like too much.

It wouldn't go back even when he tried to push it the same way he had pulled it, the power kept pushing, it wasn't being pulled from his chest anymore but only condensing in his fingers.

Now it was burning, Ellis had always been good with heat but this was something different. The tips of his fingers were glowing now, the air around them blurry from the rising heat.

“No no no no,” Now he was panicking, the heat wouldn't go back in, so what if he forced it out. He flicked his wrist down, hard. Warmth left but not in enough of an amount to help.

He swung with all the force he could muster, it almost worked, he could feel the heat wanting to leave but not being able too. It was like trying to exhale with your mouth and nose sealed shut,

The metal crumpled in the middle, the impact resonating through the empty space.

Satisfied, Ellis continued, pushing himself to the limit. He practiced drawing in heat from various sources, from the sunlight to the small fires he lit around the area. Each time, he felt the cold in his chest recede, replaced by a vibrant warmth that made him feel alive.

Days passed, and Ellis’s control over his powers grew stronger. He learned to balance the intake and output of energy, avoiding the dangerous cold that threatened to freeze his heart. He discovered that by focusing on his breathing and maintaining a steady rhythm, he could regulate the flow of power, ensuring he didn’t overextend himself.

One afternoon, as Ellis practiced in the secluded area, he was approached by Leo, one of the older residents of the Nest. Leo had been a mentor to Ellis, guiding him through his recovery and integration into the community.

"Ellis," Leo called out, his voice carrying a mix of concern and curiosity. "What are you doing out here?"

Ellis paused, wiping the sweat from his brow. "I needed to work on my abilities. There's something off about our new guests, Leo. I can't shake the feeling that they're hiding something."

Leo frowned, his eyes narrowing in thought. "What makes you say that?"

Ellis recounted the incident he had witnessed, describing the tense conversation and the unspoken worry that seemed to hang over Kaya, Marcus, and Jun. Leo listened carefully, his expression growing more serious with each word.

"I see," Leo said finally. "It's wise to be cautious, but remember, trust is the foundation of our community. We must approach this delicately."

Ellis nodded, understanding the weight of Leo's words. "I'll be careful. But I need to be ready for whatever comes."

Leo placed a reassuring hand on Ellis’s shoulder. "You’ve come a long way, You're kinda like a newborn panda on ice but I believe in you. “The hell is that supposed to mean?” Ellis said, confused. “Just go, you worm”. Leo said with a done with this shit tone.

That evening, Ellis returned to the Nest with a renewed sense of his own power. He joined Kaya, Marcus, and Jun in the communal area, where the residents had gathered for a meal. The atmosphere was warm and lively, the chatter and laughter a comforting backdrop to the evening.

As they ate, Ellis observed his new friends closely. Kaya’s confident demeanor, Marcus’s infectious laughter, and Jun’s quiet intensity all seemed genuine, but he couldn’t ignore the lingering tension.

After the meal, as the residents began to disperse, Ellis approached the trio. "Can we speak over here for a bit?" he asked, his tone serious but friendly.

Kaya glanced at Marcus and Jun before nodding. "What's on your mind?"

Ellis led them to a quiet corner of the Nest, away from prying eyes. He took a deep breath, steadying himself. "I saw you three the other night, in the storage room. You looked worried. Is there something I should know?"

Kaya exchanged a look with Marcus and Jun, her expression softening. "Ellis, we didn’t mean to cause any concern. We’re just... adjusting to everything. It's a lot to take in."

Marcus nodded, his jovial demeanor tempered with a hint of seriousness. "We've been through a lot, Ellis. Old habits die hard."

Jun remained silent, his eyes locked on Ellis’s, conveying a depth of emotion that words couldn’t capture.

Ellis took a step closer, his voice gentle but firm. "We're all in this together. If there's anything you need, or if there's something you're not telling us, please, let us help."

For a moment, the tension hung thick in the air. Then, Kaya sighed, her shoulders relaxing. "Thank you, Ellis. Your trust means a lot to us. We'll do our best to be open with you all."

The following days saw a renewed sense of camaraderie among the residents. Ellis continued to hone his abilities, often training with Kaya, Marcus, and Jun. They shared stories of their pasts, their struggles, and their hopes for the future, forging bonds that grew stronger with each passing day.

One afternoon, while practicing in the training grounds, Ellis found himself facing off against Jun. They had decided to spar, testing their abilities in a controlled environment. The other residents watched with interest, eager to see how the newcomers fared.

Ellis felt the familiar warmth coursing through him as he prepared for the match. Jun stood opposite him, his expression focused and calm.

"Ready?" Ellis asked, his voice steady.

Jun nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Ready."

The sparring match began with a burst of energy. Ellis launched himself forward, his fist glowing with a soft orange light. Jun moved with fluid grace, his body blending into the shadows. Ellis’s punch struck the ground where Jun had been standing, the impact sending a shockwave through the training area.

Jun reappeared behind Ellis, his movements swift and precise. He lashed out with a shadowy tendril, aiming for Ellis’s side. Ellis twisted, narrowly avoiding the attack, and countered with a blast of energy that forced Jun to retreat.

The match continued, each of them pushing their limits. Ellis felt the cold in his chest start to creep in, a reminder of his own limits. He focused on drawing in the ambient heat, keeping his movements controlled and precise.

As they were spared, Ellis noticed something changed in Jun’s demeanor. The young man’s eyes burned with determination, his attacks becoming more aggressive. Ellis responded in kind, their clash of powers creating a dazzling display of light and shadow.

Finally, with a final burst of energy, Ellis managed to land a decisive blow. Jun was sent sprawling, his shadows dissipating as he hit the ground. Ellis stood over him, his breathing heavy but triumphant.

Jun looked up at him, a mixture of surprise and respect in his eyes. "You’ve gotten stronger, Ellis."

Ellis extended a hand, helping Jun to his feet. "And so have you. We all have."

The residents erupted in applause, cheering for both fighters. Ellis felt a sense of accomplishment and belonging, knowing that he had earned the respect of his friends and peers.

As the sun set over the Phoenix Nest, casting long shadows across the courtyard, Ellis stood with his friends, watching the horizon. The feeling of unease that had plagued him was gone, replaced by a sense of hope and determination.

"We’ve all come a long way," Ellis said, his voice filled with gratitude. "But this is just the beginning. We’ll face whatever comes together, as a family."

Kaya, Marcus, and Jun nodded, their expressions reflecting the same sense of resolve. They knew that challenges lay ahead, but they also knew that they had each other.

And with that, the Phoenix Nest stood ready to face whatever the future held, united in their shared strength and unwavering in their commitment to one another.
