Courting death

I took my time, walking slowly towards the first restaurant I ever visited in this world, and also the place I met Amelia.

Rumors might travel faster than light, but they still needed time to get distributed to the right people.

Still, it didn't take an hour for my romantic dinner table to be joined by an apologetic restaurant owner, and a Divine cultivator, proudly wearing a golden glowing sword on his back.

"A thousand apologies, esteemed guests. But this famous Immortal wanted to meet you." the owner spoke while wringing his hands, to show he was unwilling to disturb us.

"King Ji, right? Take a seat." I allowed in a bored voice.

Amelia glanced at me with a suspicious glare, then nodded to our guest. "Martial King Ji honors us with his presence."

The Divine Realm cultivator sighed and sat in front of me, then tapped his finger on the table to place down a privacy array.

"You really don't care about a Martial King, Tower Saint?" he began in a confused tone.

I just shrugged, then sipped more tea. "A small king, of a random country, on a random world in a random galaxy. Why should my Tower care about that?" I wondered in a careless voice.

"..." his face fell, and nodded in silence. "I suspected as much. I have lived under the illusion of being a powerful man, only a step away from being invincible. Then the Immortal scroll came, conscripting me in the Libra Army." he revealed in a pitiful voice, while glancing up towards the ceiling and the starry sky above it.

Hmmm. That was different from what I expected. Instead of offering to recruit me, he was being recruited himself. By some higher level army in the local Starfield. "And thus you spent all your spirit stones on a good sword. Not a bad choice, King Ji. You might even become a corporal in the Libra army." I said in an approving tone.

"I asked the Wind Emperor, and he also fought in the Libra army, millions of years ago. He became a sergeant at the Libra gate, and returned with a higher cultivation realm. But everyone else in his platoon died. As did most of his company and regiment." the Divine cultivator said in a despondent voice.

Quite a sad story, but it matched what Grandpa said. Divine cultivators would be recruited as levy for gate battles, and died just as fast.

  "How long?" I asked instead.

Amelia frowned, while the man sighed. "In 31 days, the Libra transport ship will dock at the Heavenly Circle Station. Those who are not present for embarkation will be considered defectors. Which is quite bad."

I mused inward for a minute, comparing time speeds. In 30000 days, a lot of things could change. I might ascend to Divine Realm by then as well.

"Well, you came to the right person, at least. But, are you willing to bow your head to a little Saint?" I asked the powerful Martial King in a curious voice.

Tian Ji hesitated, while Amelia just shook her silver hair in amusement. "Don't bully the man, husband. He only wants to live, just like anyone else."

I sipped more tea, and began to consider the hidden implications of the timing of it. "If the Blue Wind Empire loses a dozen Divine cultivators in just a month, then the demonic invasion will have an easier way into this world. They have already began summoning rituals, even in this city." I whispered in thoughtful tone.

The auction Saint did tell me they needed a dozen more Divine swords. Which likely meant a dozen Divine recruits had been summoned away. No wonder that headless guy was so desperate to try and steal a sword from the auction.

Amelia nodded slowly, while our guest seemed confused. "What demonic invasion?" he asked in a wary tone.

"Long story, with a Buddhist monk and a Demon Prince as the instigators. I'll deal with it later." I waved my hand lazily, making Amelia snort. She kinda got used with my impossible claims by now.

"That...is already over my head." Tian Ji muttered to himself.

Well, jumping off Buddha's palm was also an option. You just needed a brave enough demon. I hoped Lin Fei would be up to the task.

"Come with me, if you want to live." I offered with an open hand.

The Martial King grit his teeth, then shook my hand and vanished. Amelia just sighed then glanced towards the restaurant's door, which blew open as an angry Saint entered, escorted by a dozen men with metal hooks instead of hands.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Rumors did travel fast in this world. The candy bandits found me again.

"I am not giving you my candy! I bought it fair and square. Shameless robbers!" I yelled and waved the poisoned hawthorns stick at them.

"Hey! I want that candy!" Amelia demanded after smelling the delicious poison.

"You ruined our plans, Tower Saint! And harmed by men too!" the enemy Saint answered in an aggravated voice.

Oh yeah? Face slapping time, again!

I gifted Amelia her candy, then stood up and faced the enemy Saint. "I just disarmed your men. Look, they are still alive and well. Even got upgrades now." I pointed out in a peaceful voice.

The hooked men stared at their hooks in confusion. They didn't seem to enjoy their upgrades that much.

"Our target got away because of you. Shameless meddler!" the other Saint yelled back.

"...And the poison was so expensive too. Even for a princess..." one of the robbers grumbled in a disgruntled voice.

Amelia crunched on the first haw, and nodded. "Indeed, this poison is very tasty. Stops the heart and locks the meridians. But you used too little..." she commented in a half-displeased voice.

"...How can you eat that?" the Saint murmured in confusion.

"I just said it was expensive, a single drop is worth 4000 spirit stones." the other robber added with a sad voice.

The angry Saint slashed his hand and bisected the stupid robber. "Don't reveal everything in public, idiot!"

I mean, it was kinda late for that. These guys weren't very good at their jobs. Then again, half the people are stupid everywhere in the universe. Only the other half are above average. It was a mathematical constant, after all. 50% of people had to be below the average.

"So how you want to do this? Do you confess everything now, or do I have to beat you up first? I'm fine either way." I proposed in a casual voice.

"Courting death!" the angry Saint yelled and ran towards me, now holding a sword in hand.

I parried elegantly, and kicked his shin. "I'm not interested in your romantic life! Although, I admit you are a brave man to court Death herself." I answered in a wry voice, and sliced his wrists to disarm the silly Saint. Could be a death cultist, in love with Death or such. I've heard worse.

"Hah! I don't think he actually meant what you said. It's a common expression..." Amelia injected with a confused voice.

"You're not a death cultist, worshiping Death?" I asked to make sure.

"...I am. How did you know?" the disarmed Saint asked me back, sounding surprised.

"See! He loves Death! Thus, courting death. I knew I was smart!" I exclaimed in a victorious voice.

"...It's also a common expression. It means to punish someone and kill them." another robber observed in a wise voice.

Ahh. Only half a victory then. "I grew up in a cave, so I might miss some things." I explained patiently.

"Just confess, and we'll send you away. Who did you want to assassinate with this poison?" Amelia demanded in a friendly voice.

The Saint sighed and held out his bleeding stumps. "The Emperor's daughter, of course. Now send me to my sweet Death already. This hurts too much." he pleaded with a pained voice.

I sighed and stored all the candy robbers in my spatial ring. The Wind Emperor might not be so nice when he finds out about this plot.

Amelia frowned, then looked around at a hundred horrified restaurant customers, all witnesses to this show. "Should I silence them?" she asked with a sad voice.

I just sighed inward, and flicked her forehead. There were several Divine Elders in this city right now, and they heard everything.

"These fine people are all citizens of the Blue Wind Empire. Their Emperor will decide their fate." I spoke in a disproving voice, then walked outside, to meet six Divine Elders standing shoulder to shoulder.

Amelia ran after me, then skidded to a halt. "Ah. Forgot about them. Divine Senses are so wide." she said in a sheeply tone.

"...Tower Saint. I heard you can sell Divine Swords?" a braver Elder asked in a hopeful voice.

"I don't have any right now, but I can get 6 more Divine Swords in 30 days. Bring 10 billions each." I allowed in a polite voice, then held Amelia's hand to start flying towards the Governor Palace.

"...I am Martial King Shuang. Can I ask what happened to King Ji?" the first Elder asked while flying at my side.

Uhhh. This guy was Caihong's father, and thus my father-in-law. Would a free sword be enough as a bride price?

"I sent him to train in a secret realm. Want to know more?" I answered just as Amelia elbowed me hard.

Martial King Shuang fell silent as he flew at my side. "Would 5 billions be enough?" he asked after a long minute. Wow, he was quite poor for a king.

I stopped, right above the palace. "You would have to join my Tower for that. Just like King Ji." I offered in a generous voice.

"You gave me a free Divine Sword when I joined the Tower." Amelia spoke out of turn.

"I'll join your Tower, for a free Divine Sword." King Shuang decided at once.

Hmmm. It wasn't a bad trade. 'And you give me your daughter as a wife.' I answered mentally, then patted his shoulder and sent him into the Tower for a family reunion with his daughter.

"What? You gave everyone else a free sword." Amelia grumbled as we began to descend.

That was true, but she missed the point. "Grandpa is not a slave, my dear. You have to respect his work." I explained as we landed on the front lawn, and the Governor flew out ready for war.

"Who! ...I remember you! The little Saint from the Tower." he exclaimed after examining me for a minute.

I just dropped the disarmed criminals on his lawn. "These guys wanted to harm the Emperor. I'll leave them to you." I said in a careless voice, then flew away from the surprised Governor.

There wasn't much law in any cultivation world, but a wise cultivator did manage a network of disciples and followers to protect himself and his family. As a Governor in the Blue Wind Empire, this guy should have the means to contact his Emperor and warn him.

We landed in the market to stock up on goods, buying in bulk and nearly empting all the open stores and stands. Clothes, furniture, food, tools and even farm animals or seeds.

I spent almost a million spirit stones grabbing anything of use, and leaving the market a bit empty.

A herd of 1000 cows only costs 1000 spirit stones, and sheep were half that price. Chickens were much cheaper than that.

Of course, mortal animals didn't produce spirit essence like a Spirit Beast, nor did the mortal crops, but I had a plan for that.

With Qi arrays and special care, I should be able to evolve new Spirit Beasts and Spiritual Herbs, given enough time.

And I could also make more time, by speeding it up. Plus, with my Eternal Tear I was now eternal as well. I had all the time in world.
