The first few days back were a whirlwind of disbelief and readjustment. Josh's return caused a sensation at school. The teachers were dumbfounded, along with the students who all held a mix of awe and morbid curiosity. Rumors flew about on how he had "come back from the dead" and his newfound physique.
"Dude, you're ripped!" Mark, one of the football players, exclaimed, flexing his own (considerably smaller) biceps. "What happened to you? Did you get bitten by a radioactive bodybuilder or something?"
The girls, on the other hand, were less subtle. As Josh quickly caught several of them staring, their eyes lingering on his... enhanced form, whispering and giggling amongst themselves, and making looking away uncomfortable, and it only worsened when even some of the teachers looked a bit flustered. Sasha, he noticed, was definitely on edge; her cheeks flushed whenever anyone commented on his appearance.
However, amidst all the attention, he briefly caught the eye of the spiky-haired kid from his chemistry class; he just glared at Josh with a subtle look of surprise and intrigue before storming off.
The biggest shock, however, came from his decision to retire from his prankster persona. Mr. Thompson nearly fainted when Josh apologized for his past behavior and expressed his desire to focus on his studies. His classmates were equally bewildered. The class clown was now… a mature, responsible student? The world had gone mad.
One day after school, Sasha and Josh walked through the park, the setting sun casting long shadows across the green fields. She was quieter than usual, a thoughtful frown creasing her forehead.
"You're acting kind of werid" Josh said, breaking the comfortable silence. "Something on your mind?”
Sasha hesitated for a moment, then blurted out, "It's just… you're so different now, Josh. You're… mature, basically acting like an adult even, and even have actual powers to boo,t so why…why are you so willing to just… give up being a hero?”
Josh stopped walking and turned to face her, his expression serious. "Sash, just becases I have powers now doesn't mean they were just handed to me... in fact, I pretty much had to build myself up from scratch, just to even begin to perform a flicker of what I am capable of now, and that is not getting into all the other crap I had to face off and deal with on a near daily basis." He then let out a deep sigh. "Honestly, Sasha, I had more than my fair share of the hero life, and just want to focus on being a regular teenager, finish school, maybe go to college, and like... You know, finally live a normal life."
Sasha sighed, but Josh could see the understanding in her eyes. "I guess… I kind of get it. But still… It's hard to believe." She paused, then asked.
Josh then let out a low chuckle. “Believe Sasha, while here on earth people can offer being powerless, being ordinary, but back in Alleran…that kind of thinking could get you killed.” his green eyes then dimmed. “You had to have power just to survive the day…let alone save the world.”
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Sasha then held her chin in concern. “But surely it wasn’t all bad, and right, I mean…Is there anything you miss about Alleran?"
A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. An idea sparked in his mind. "Actually, there is one thing." He reached into the pocket dimension he could now access—a handy trick he'd picked up from his stern elven teacher—and pulled out a simple wooden flute.
"Follow me," he said, gesturing towards a small hill overlooking the park.
They climbed to the top of the hill, the city lights twinkling in the distance. Josh sat down beneath a large oak tree and raised the flute to his lips. He closed his eyes, remembering the melodies he had heard in the Elven forests of the fantasy world, and began to play.
The music was soft and lilting, a melancholic yet beautiful tune that seemed to weave itself into the fabric of the evening. As he played, a faint glow began to emanate from the nearby bushes. To Sasha's utter astonishment, small, blue-winged creatures emerged, their delicate forms dancing to the music. Fairies.
And then, from the trunk of the ancient oak, a figure emerged. She was tall and slender, with skin the color of emeralds and hair like woven vines. Her eyes glowed with ancient wisdom, and her presence filled the air with a sense of serene power. A Dryad.
Sasha gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Fairies… and a Dryad? They're real?"
Josh chuckled, lowering the flute. "Yeah. Turns out, they are. I was surprised, too, when I first saw them in Alleran." He turned to Sasha, his voice filled with a cheerful wonder. "It's amazing that they exist here, too."
He explained, "Fairies are often protector deities who watch over trees and forests. Guarding them from disease, natural disasters, and like... well, us humans." His eyes then lowered sadly. "But their power is extremely limited, especially on Earth, where magic itself is far more limited." He then raised his finger, and one of the fairies gently sat on it. "Which makes one realize just how important it is to protect nature as a whole."
Sasha then looked over to the fairies and the dryad, who smiled at her, and she returned it. "Well, you surely made me realize that," she muttered gently.
The moment of wonder was shattered when a voice, laced with a familiar malice, broke the peaceful atmosphere.
"Well, well, well. Look what we have here.”
The spiky-haired teenager from school—the same one who had glared at Josh earlier—stood at the edge of the hill, his eyes fixed on Josh with a predatory gleam. Then, his form began to twist and contort, his skin hardening into familiar orange scales, his features elongating into a reptilian snout, and when the transformation in all its grotesque and horrific glory was complete, the two other teens immediately recognized who the monster was.
"Lizard Commando," Sasha whispered, her voice trembling with fear.
The villain grinned, his forked tongue flicking in anticipation. "I still can't believe it. Are you still alive? After I ripped your fucking guts out? Should have devoured your body whole so there was nothing left for you to come back from!’ He snickered deviously. “But don’t worry, not only will I make you this evening's course…” He then raised out his right arm andrazor-sharpp claws protruded from his fingers. “But your girlfriend will be joining along with you!”
He lunged towards them, his claws extended even further, his red eyes burning with murderous intent.
"Sasha, stay behind me!" Josh ordered, his voice hard and commanding. He stepped in front of her, and to the fairies, and he spoke in their ancient tongue, a language of leaves and starlight, urging them to cast a glamour to conceal Sasha.
